Reginald Vayo
2004-02-26

Reginald Vayo, 94, passed away peacefully at St. Andrews Hospital on Thursday, February 19, 2004.

Born in South Portland on November 3, 1909, he was the son of Frank P. and Marie A. Vayo.

After graduating from South Portland High School, he worked for the Brown Company in Portland.

During World War II he moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for the War Production Board in charge of paper and craft production for the United States and was very involved with Lend-Lease, which was so important to the survival of Europe during the '30s and '40s.

In 1945 he joined St. Regis Paper Company. He remained there for the rest of his working career, rising to the position of Executive Vice-President of the International Division. He traveled extensively during these times and enjoyed those travels, and all his friends were so important to him.

During the 1960s he was involved in the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization as well as many other humanitarian efforts.

In 1981, Mr. and Mrs. Vayo returned to Maine and lived on Sawyer's Island where they gardened together and made their house a home.

Mr. Vayo was predeceased by his brothers, a sister, and his beloved granddaughter, Bridget Sorkin.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Christine Anderson Vayo; three daughters, Marie Wood and husband, Don Jean Hamilton, Carol Barr and husband, Cameron; grandchildren, Brian Wood, Amy Whitley, John Hamilton, David Hamilton and Matthew Barr; great-grandchildren, Andrew Sorkin, Graham Sorkin, Blake Wood, Dillon Wood, Taylor Wood, Christine Whitley and Allison Whitley; and one sister, Geraldine Hutchins, of Gray.

A memorial service was held Saturday, February 21 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Leah Vegvary
2004-03-04

Leah Vegvary, 51, of Laveen, Arizona, died Friday, February 27 at a hospice facility in Phoenix after a 10-year battle with breast cancer.

She was born Leah Tauber on January 20, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, to Max and Mary Edith (Smith) Tauber. She was educated in Brooklyn, N.Y. schools.

She worked for many years as a waitress in New Jersey and Houston, Texas, before becoming a shift manager at a McDonald's in Colorado Springs, Colorado, before having to stop working because of her disease.

Leah loved animals and rescued many cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, etc. that would have ended up in dire circumstances otherwise. For several years while living in Peyton, Colorado, she was involved in showing and rescuing rabbits.

She had a wonderful sense of humor and a wonderful sense of joy. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her mother, Edith Tauber of East Boothbay; her husband, Bela (Bill) Vegvary of Laveen, Arizona; three sons, Philemont Ponzi of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Michael Vegvary of Phoenix, Ariz., and Christopher Vegvary of Laveen, Ariz.; one daughter, Jennifer Malloy of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two grandsons and one granddaughter; one sister, Carole Tauber Raizman of East Boothbay; and two brothers, Philip Tauber of East Boothbay and Richard Tauber of Staten Island, N.Y.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 11 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

John C. Virden Jr.
2005-03-03

John C. Virden, Jr., 82 of Boothbay Harbor, died Tuesday, February 22 in the Gregory Wing at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor.

Born on January 4, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio, he was a son of John C. Virden, Sr. and Euphemia Patterson Virden. He grew up in Cleveland and later attended Hotchkiss School and Yale University.

Mr. Virden entered the Marine Corps and began active duty on June 4, 1943. He served during World War II and during his service he received permanent citations, the Distinguished Flying Cross with two Gold Stars and Air medal with nine Gold Stars. After the war, he was president of the John C. Virden Company in Cleveland until he and his family moved to California in 1961. As an entrepreneur, he founded several businesses including Medes Inc., in the healthcare industry. In California, he was active in Yale Admissions and also served as an elected member of the Planning Board and the Palos Verdes Estates City Council.

Mr. and Mrs. Virden retired to Linekin Bay in East Boothbay in 1984. He was active in the community as treasurer of the Boothbay Region Chamber of Commerce, as well as on the Board of Trustees for St. Andrews Hospital for many years. While on the board he and Lou Brown spearheaded the original concept of St. Andrews Village Retirement Community.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Tommy Virden of Boothbay Harbor; two sons, John C. Virden III and his wife Martha of Lakesville, Conn., and Davd A. Virden and his wife Chris of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.; a daughter, Patricia Mitchell and her husband James of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.; a sister, Mrs. Robert Hall of Bolton Landing, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in the spring, to be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Andrews Hospital, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538 or to the Boothbay Region YMCA, P.O. Box 500, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral and Cremation Service, Boothbay, Maine.

Cheryl Vickerson dies at 56
2005-04-29

Cheryl Vickerson, 56, formerly of New Gloucester, passed away April 19 at Central Maine Medical Center.

She was born on January 2, 1949, in Gray, the daughter of Leslie, Sr., and Mavis Jordan, of New Gloucester. She attended Memorial School in New Gloucester, and graduated from Gray-New Gloucester High School in 1967.

Cheryl worked for many years for Cole Farms Restaurant as a waitress and for Unum Insurance for several years. She moved to Greenville, SC, to attend Bob Jones University and worked for 16 years in various offices for the University, most recently in the purchasing department.

Cheryl knew everyone and had many friends; they all loved her.

She loved all people, little children, all animals, her flower garden, and had a great love for cooking and collecting cookbooks. She loved coming home at Christmas just sto see the snow.

She was predeceased by her father, Leslie Peaco, Sr., and a sister, Donna Peaco.

She is survived by her mother, Mavis Peaco; a sister, Diane Peaco; three brothers, Lawrence Peaco and Wesley Peaco, both of New Gloucester, and Leslie Peaco, Jr., of Poland; and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation and funeral were held last weekend at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray. Committal services will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.

Lillian M. Vaupel
2005-11-03

Lillian M. Vaupel, 90, of East Boothbay died Oct. 29, 2005 at Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro.

Born Oct. 12, 1915 in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of John and Louise Bosse Fisher. She attended schools in Brooklyn, N.Y.

In 1938, she married Edwin Vaupel and made their home in Queens, N.Y. They later moved to Shelbourne, Vermont and spent many years there, owning and operating the Oak Ridge Bed and Breakfast from 1956 to the mid-sixties. In 1966 they moved to Blauvelt, N.Y. where she returned to school to finish her nursing career.

After the death of her husband, she moved to Franklin, N.J. where she worked at various nursing homes. In 1983 she moved to Ocean Point Road, East Boothbay and continued to work in the healthcare field.

Mrs. Vaupel was a member of St. Columba’s Episcopal Church in Boothbay Harbor.

She enjoyed reading, her cats and visiting with her daughter and grandchildren in Colorado. Her family was the center of her life.

She was predeceased by her husband.

Survivors include her daughter, Vilma Southwick of Loveland, Colo.; grandchildren, Glenn Southwick of Wellington, Colo., and Christian Southwick and Deborah Bachli, both of Loveland, Colo.; a niece, Doris Dombrowski of Boothbay; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held on Wednesday, November 2. Interment is in Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

Donations may be sent to the Human Society of Lincoln County.

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home.

Madelyn L. Vincent
2005-04-28

Madelyn. L. Pal Vincent, 88, of Boothbay Harbor and Clearwater, Fla., died Saturday April 23 at her home in Boothbay Harbor.

Born in Harwich, Ma. on February 4, 1917, she was the daughter of Roger L. and Madeline (Beaupre) Bassett.

In 1934, she graduated valedictorian of her class from Harwich High School and attended Lowell Technical School and Clark University.

On September 23, 1937, she married Parker H. Vincent. For some years she was a radio commentator in Massachusetts and was active in the PTA and Girl Scouts when her children were young. She was an Episcopalian, an avid collector of antiques, and a talented handicrafter who for many years produced the Christmas fairs at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lewiston.

In 1960 she founded the Palabra Shop in Poland Spring, and in 1965 opened another Palabra Shop in Boothbay Harbor, which is now managed by daughter Valerie S. Vincent.

Mrs. Vincent was an avid traveler and theatre buff, spending much time in London and continental Europe during the 1970s and 1980s until her health failed. She was the author of several books and monographs, among which were The Moses Bottle and The Vincent Family Cookbook.

She was predeceased by her husband, Parker H. Vincent who died in 1999 and a son, Lee Vincent who died in 1977.

Survivors include daughters, Madelyn L. Huffmire of Ocean Point, Anne Durand of Arlington, Va., and adopted daughter, Valerie S. Vincent of Boothbay Harbor; four sisters, Gloria Straughn of W. Brewster, Mass., Anne Davis of Concord, N.H., Jeanette Dennis of Harwichport, Mass., and Claudette Clement of Yarmouthport, Mass.; two brothers: Roland W. Bassett of Brewster, Mass., and Royce A. Bassett of Orleans, Mass.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren

Visiting hours were held Tuesday April 26th at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. The funeral service was held Wednesday, April 27 at St. Columbas Episcopal Church in Boothbay Harbor with Rev. Margaret Greta Russell officiating. A committal service was held in Mt. Auburn cemetery in Auburn.

Martha C.M. Vaughan
2005-12-15

Martha Cartwright Morris Vaughan, 100, died peacefully at home in Damariscotta on Sunday, December 4.

Born September 14, 1905 in New Haven, Conn., she was the daughter of Charles Gould Morris and Elisabeth (Woodbridge) Morris.

In 1928 she graduated from Radcliffe College.

On January 6, 1930 she married George Batchelor Vaughan of Cambridge, Mass. Before their marriage, she toured Europe by bicycle, taught at the Grenfell Mission in Labrador, and at Elm Lea in Putney, Vt. She was a counselor at Camp Arden in Brattleboro, Vt. off and on from 1920 through 1940.

After time spent in California, Connecticut, Rockport and Dresden, she and Mr. Vaughan moved to Boothbay in 1947 where she became an active member of the community, serving on the school board and as the executive secretary for the Lincoln County chapter of the American Red Cross. She was a founder of the Boothbay Region Little Theater Group, serving as its president and acting, directing, and handling make-up.

She enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Boothbay Region Garden Club Mrs. Vaughan was one of the founding members of the Lincoln County Cultural and Historical Association. She was an active member of its research committee and chairman of the Pownalborough Court House committee. She was instrumental in getting the Court House listed on the National Register of Historic Houses. She was the author of the book "Sallie and Captain Sam,' published in 1992, which was based on the diary and correspondence of courthouse residents in the 19th century.

She enjoyed singing and remembered an amazing number of songs. In September she celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends old and new, and her wonderful caregivers.

She was predeceased by her husband George in 1999, after 65 years of marriage.

Survivors include two daughters, Zibette Dean of Edgecomb and Nancy Holmes of Newcastle; a son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Harriet Vaughan of Richmond; ten grandchildren, eight great-grand-children; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held in the spring.

Henry W. Gross

Robert E. Laite Funeral Home, Camden

VINALHAVEN - Henry Webber Gross, 78, a lifelong resident of Vinalhaven, died Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at his home. born in Vinalhaven on December 10, 1925, he was the only child of Henry and Beatrice (Murch) Gross.

On February 4, 1943, he married Geneva Gray-Stinson. Henry had worked as a self-employed commercial fisherman for many years scalloping during the winter months and lobstering the rest of the year. Henry also worked rebuilding lobsterboats and was well known for his mechanical ability in repairing gasoline and diesel boat engines for the local fisherman. In addition, Henry worked as a caretaker for several island families including Chris Gates, Peggy Ives, Ed Hoyt and the late David Pixley. His family said he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Surviving is his wife of 48 years, Geneva Gross; three children, George Gross and his wife, Lisa; Bonnie Davis and her husband, Eric; Carl Gross and his wife, Lynn, all of Vinalhaven; three stepchildren, Alvin Oxton and his wife, Linda of Vinalhaven; Frances Philbrook and her husband, Carl of Boston; Hazel Philbrook of Vinalhaven; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a stepson, Arthur Oxton.

A graveside service will be held 10:30AM, Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at Ames cemetery with the Rev. Michelle Wiley Arey and Elder Robert Candage co-officiating. The family requests memorial donations be made towards funeral expenses and sent to the Laite Funeral Home, P.O. Box 366, Camden, ME 04843.

Mary Esther Treat Clark

BELFAST - Mary Esther Treat Clark, 81, of Belfast and formerly of Green Valley and Tucson, Ariz., passed away Monday, July 4, 2005, at a local health-care facility.

Mary Esther is survived by a daughter, Anne and her husband, Joshua, of Searsport; a son, Donald "Chip" Clark also of Searsport; two brothers, William W. Treat of Stratham, New Hampshire, and his wife, Vivian, and Joshua Treat III of Belfast and his wife, Virginia. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Casey Clark, Joshua Treat V, and Alex Treat; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Boathouse.

Arrangements are under the care of Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
