Eleanor Thurston

KENNEBUNK - Eleanor Agnes Thurston, 85, formerly of Portland, died Sunday at Kennebunk Nursing Home.

She was born March 2, 1912, in Portland, a daughter of James W. and Arline Perrin Robertson, attended South Portland schools, graduated in 1936 from South Portland High School and in 1938 from St. Barnabas Hospital School with a nursing degree.

In 1940 she married George Thurston.

In the late 1930s and early 1940s Mrs. Thurston was a private duty nurse in several area nursing homes and also worked at the Osteopathic Hospital. From 1969 to 1980 she was employed in the Deering High School cafeteria.

She was a member of the Stevens Avenue Congregational Church, Cumberland-York Senior Citizen Council, St. Barnabas Hospital Alumni, and was active in the Girls Scouts, Rebekahs and the Salvation Army.

She enjoyed camping, and knitting sweaters and mittens for the church.

She was a loving and caring person who enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, according to family members.

She was predeceased by her husband, in 1984, and a daughter, Patricia Locke, in 1981.

Survivors include a son, Philip Sr. of Belfast; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Hazel Pillsbury

LIMINGTON - Hazel A. Selby Pillsbury, 80, of Limington, died Sunday at Chestnut Hill Benevolent Association, Brookline, Mass.

She was born June 6, 1917, in Port Norfolk, Va., a daughter of Oliver and Natalie Wyckoff Selby, and grew up in the Stamford, Conn., area where she met and married James C. Pillsbury.

According to family members, her life was filled with happiness and love, and she will be remembered for her selfless dedication to her family and community.

After many years in Brewer, where she was the personal secretary to two Bangor city managers, Mrs. Pillsbury retired to Limington in 1977.

She was an active member of the Limington Historical Society and the Thursday Club and served on the Limington Library Board.

She was also active in the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Portland and Boston, serving in many capacities, most recently on the lecture committee, in the Christian Science Reading Room and ushering for church services. She was a former first reader and board member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Bangor.

She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. David (Nancy) Whitney of Rye, N.H., and Mrs. Robert (Janet) Wilks of Brewer; a brother, Oliver R. Selby of Stoughton, Mass.; four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mildred Pierce

ACTON - Mildred A. Pierce, 88, of Willow Street and formerly of Pawtucket, R.I., and Seekonk, Mass., died Sunday at H.D. Goodall Hospital.

She was born Oct. 11, 1909, in Pawtucket, a daughter of Walter J. and Julia Sheldon Conary, and was a descendant of John Sheldon, who settled in the Providence area around 1650. She graduated in 1928 from Pawtucket High School.

For 12 years Mrs. Pierce was employed as a clerk by New England Telephone Co. in Providence, where she was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church. She was active in World Wide Guild, an assistant in the Sunday school, an assistant teacher in the Infant Department and the children's organist.

In Seekonk she belonged to Memorial Baptist Church and its Women's Fellowship and in Maine she was a member of the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church in Springvale.

She enjoyed sewing and crocheting.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Albert Prosser

SPRINGVALE - Albert L. Prosser, 101, a retired Navy captain and Springvale resident, died Saturday at H.D. Goodall Hospital.

He was born Nov. 29, 1896, in Fitchburg, Mass., the son of Albert West and Jeanette Kearny Prosser, graduated in 1914 from Lisbon Falls High School and in 1918 from Bowdoin College, Brunswick.

Mr. Prosser enlisted in the Navy and graduated in 1919 from Officers Materiel School at Harvard University. He served with the Navy in the Adriatic during World War I and in the Pacific Theater during World War II. In 1943 he was promoted to captain. He retired from the Navy in 1947.

In 1925 he married his wife of 73 years, Marion Williams, after a two-year submarine tour in the Philippines.

Since retiring to Springvale he was active in numerous civic affairs including as a charter trustee of the Sanford Sewerage District, as the first chairman of the Sanford Planning Board in 1953, as an associate member of the Zoning Board of Appeals from 1954 to 1965 and since 1956 as a member and former chairman of the Sanford Historical Committee.

Since 1947 Mr. Prosser had been a member of the North Parish Congregational Church, where he served as clerk, moderator, historian and chairman of several building committees. He compiled and published a church history in 1961.

He was a former trustee of Acton Congregational Church, former director of the Sanford Library Association, former member and past president of the Sanford-Springvale Rotary Club, former member and director of the Sanford-Alfred Historical Society and a former president of the Wakefield-Brookfield HistoricalSociety in New Hampshire.

From 1948 to 1956 he was a trustee at Nasson College and wrote a history of the school. He helped organize the Bowdoin Club of York County, served as president of the Portland Society of Natural History from 1960 to 1965, as president of the Maine Audubon Society from 1961 to 1965 and co-authored the book "Enjoying Maine Birds."

An ardent stamp collector, Mr. Prosser was an honorary member of the Maine Philatelic Society.

According to survivors he endeared himself to many of Sanford and Springvale's children and was fondly known as Grampa by them. His neighbor of 40 years, Mrs. Hanson, said, "As a friend and neighbor, he was always ready to give of himself and his love."

Survivors include his wife; a sister, Virginia Prosser Clark of Stafford Springs, Conn.; a nephew and two nieces.

Neal Pitts

LIMINGTON - Neal W. Pitts, 82, of Route 25, died Saturday at Springbrook Nursing Care Facility, Westbrook.

He was born Dec. 27, 1915, in Limington, a son of Henry W. and Ethna Moody Pitts. He attended Limington schools and graduated in 1933 from Limington Academy, where he was an outstanding basketball player according to his family.

After high school Mr. Pitts was a truck driver with Pulsifer Brothers, and alsodrove for Meserves Express and Sanborn Express, retiring in 1977.

After retiring from Sanborn he was employed by Churchill Motors in Kezar Falls and Cumberland Cold Storage Co. in Cornish.

He was a member of the truck drivers' Teamsters Union.

As a young man his interests included hunting and motorcycle riding, and he owned Harley and Indian motorcycles. He enjoyed the outdoors, snowshoeing, gardening, playing the guitar and harmonica, and traveling with his wife, ArleneWhitehouse Pitts, particularly to Bar Harbor and Vermont. His wife died in 1994.

Survivors include two sons, Allan N. and Marvin W., both of Limington; a sister, Elinor Weeman of Gorham; two foster children, Pattie J. Dixon of Casco and Michael Strout of Salinas, Calif.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Betty Pelkey

SANFORD - Betty Anne Pelkey, 44, of School Street, died Friday.

She was born June 8, 1954 in Gardiner, a daughter of Richard and Phyllis Fabrizi Stonier, and attended Beekmantown Central School, Plattsburg, N.Y. and nursing school in Tucson, Ariz.

She was employed as a nurse for several years until she decided to pursue her love of music, survivors say.

Mrs. Pelkey was employed as a disc jockey for a while, and began selling music.

She sang at various resorts, doing selections by her favorite artist, Patsy Cline, family members say.

Jeffrey Adams of Sanford was her longtime companion.

Survivors include her mother of Plattsburg; three sons, Lawrence of Maryland, Robert of Sanford and Erik of Chicopee, Mass; a daughter, Brandy of Mass.; three brothers, Richard of Fla., Harold of Montclair, N.J. and Michael of Plattsburg; four sisters, Mary Jane Scott of Montgomery Village, Md., Melissa Woodbury of Peachtree City, Ga., Andrea Ozsvath of Santa Rosa, Calif. and Evelyn McGrady of Glen Allen, Va.; two grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

George Simpson

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - George Simpson, 79, of Imerpial Street, died at home Saturday.

He was born May 15, 1919 in Saco, a son of David and Ethel Mattress Simpson and attended Thornton Academy.

Mr. Simpson was employed with the Public Works Department of Old Orchard Beach for 25 years and as a special police officer for the seaside community.

A U.S. Army veteran, he was a lifetime member of the American Legion, and an avid sports fan.

He was a communicant of St. Margaret’s Church, Old Orchard Beach.

Survivors include his wife, Ramona Morales Gonzales Simpson of Old Orchard Beach; seven daughters, Caroline Sheets of Fort Wayne, Ind., Sonia Gardner, Denise Bentgen, Tamara Kiernan and Susan of Old Orchard Beach; Carmen Dorsey of Chesapeake, Va. and Petra Sosa of Anaheim, Calif; son sons, George H. Jr. of Biddeford, David of Portland, Michael of Saco, Robert of S.C., George of Pensacola, Fla., and Joaquin Sosa of Pawtucket, R.I.; a brother, Leo of Patterson, N.J.; 28 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Boutet

SACO - Ruth Boutet, 87, of Wakefield Avenue, died Saturday at Evergreen Manor.

She was born Dec. 1, 1910 in Saco, a daughter of Walter and Amanda Morin Goodhale, and was a 1929 graduate of Thornton Academy.

Mrs. Boutet was a secretary, employed at United Auto Parts of Biddeford for 13 years. As well, she was a meal site coordinator for the Southern Maine Agency on Aging for 10 years and worked in food preparation at the Wardwell Home.

She was past president of the Open Door of Saco, a member of Old Orchard Beach Senior Citizens and the Ross Center and was a member of the Saco Democratic Committee.

Mrs. Boutet was a communicant of Most Holy Trinity Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond, in October, 1975.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Mrs. James A.) Black and Donna (Mrs. Eugene R.) Lacroix of Saco; a son, Robert W. of Saco; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Jeannine Frost

SANFORD - Former resident Jeannine (Richard) Frost, 74, of Gillette Street, Laconia, N.H., died at home Friday.

She was born in St. Claude, P.Q., Canada, a daughter of Willie and Melina (Fortier) Richard and was a 1944 graduate of Sanford High School. A graduate of Banford Academy of Hair Design in Malden, Mass., she had lived in Laconia since 1955.

Mrs. Frost was a communicant of Laconia’s St. Joseph Church, where she served as a eucharistic minister for many years and was a member of Catholic Daughters of America and St. Joseph’s Ladies Guild.

She was a secretary at Laconia’s Memorial Middle/Junior School for 17 years and also been a real estate agent.

Mrs. Frost was a teddy bear artist and collector and appeared on a local television station demonstrating her artistry. Her bears were juried through the New Hampshire League of Craftsmen and her bears sold throughout the U.S., survivors say. Examples of her work are in the Teddy Bear Museum in Naples, Fla. She was a charter member of Teddy Bear Makers of America.

As well, she volunteered hundreds of hours at St. Vincent dePaul Society Thrift Store and Food Pantry.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Richard C. Frost; three daughters, Helene of Newington, Conn., Marsha Holliston of White Salmon, Wash., and Denise Heath of Franklin, N.H.; a son, Timothy of Derry, N.H.; two sisters, Alliette Canning of Laconia and Helene Greenfield of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
