Viola Joy Beverage

ROCKLAND - Viola Joy Beverage, 90, of Rockland died peacefully on Oct. 10, 2005, surrounded by her family, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport. She will be dearly missed by many friends and loved ones.

She was born in Southwest Harbor in the village of Manset on Dec. 25, 1914 and was the daughter of Clarence F. and Florence Parker Joy.

A 1932 graduate of Rockland High School, she subsequently attended Nasson College in Springvale. She was employed by New England Telephone Company in Rockland, and Pacific Telephone Company in Los Angeles during her husband's wartime service. She also worked for years in the offices of the Clarence F. Joy Insurance Agency in Rockland, owned by her parents.

Viola and her husband Gerald resided with their family in Augusta for more than 30 years before retiring in 1988 to their earlier home of Rockland. They were active members of South Parish Congregational Church in Augusta and more recently the Rockland Congregational Church, where Viola was a member of the Ladies Guild.

She was a devoted and beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Her biggest passion was her family, with whom she loved to spend time traveling, dining out and getting together for family events. She also enjoyed playing bridge and was an excellent cook.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Gerald G. Beverage, originally of North Haven; her son, Parker Joy Beverage and his wife Ann G. of Waterville; her daughter, Clare Beverage Warner and her husband Timothy R. of Menlo Park, Calif.; four grandchildren, Clare Beverage, Emily Beverage, Anne Warner and Daniel Warner; her sister, Maizie Joy Newcomb of Rockland; her niece, Florence Verrill of Southport, Conn., and her nephew, Frederick Newcomb of Owls Head.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, Oct. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home at 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. A celebration of Viola's life will be held Friday, Oct. 14 at 1:30 p.m. at the Rockland Congregational Church at 180 Limerock St. with the Rev. Elizabeth Mauro officiating. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Abiding Memorial Fund, Rockland Congregational Church, P.O. Box 554, Rockland, ME 04841.

Sherman R. Sullivan, Ph.D.

CAMDEN - Sherman Russell Sullivan, Ph.D., 67, died Oct. 10, 2005 at Windward Gardens in Camden after battling Parkinson's disease since 1978.

He was born on Nov. 17, 1937 in Cripple Creek, Colo. and was the son of Charles E. and Julia H. (Field) Sullivan.

A child prodigy who started studying piano at the age of 4, he placed first in the Central City Piano competition in Colorado. In 1954 he graduated from Colorado College in Colorado Springs with a degree in music. A brilliant pianist, he studied in Colorado with noted pianists and composers including Roy and Johanna Harris, Joseph Block, John White, and Max Lanner. He also played with the Bel Canto opera.

He was employed as a security analyst/economist in New York at several stock brokerage firms including Dominick & Dominick, Fahnestock, Harris Upham and McCarthy, and Crisanti & Maffei.

He was a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honorary Business Society, and a former member of the New York Society of Security Analysts, the New York Athletic Club and St. John Baptiste Catholic Church.

In 1983, his doctoral thesis was published in the American Economist. He earned his doctor of philosophy in economics from New York University in New York City.

In 1998 Dr. and Mrs. Sullivan moved from New York City to Camden, having spent summers there since 1956. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary Atkins Sullivan of Camden; two brothers, Marvin Sullivan of Idaho Falls, Idaho and Gerald Sullivan of Visalia, Calif.; two sisters, Shirley Snare of Craig, Colo. and Evalyn Bowers of Denver, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Carol Atkins Savage and her husband Frank of Litchfield, N.H.; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved feline companion Stacy.

A funeral mass will be held Thursday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church with the Rev. Arthur Pechillo officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery in Camden.

Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church; or Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice, 22 White St., Rockland, ME 04841.

Arrangements are with the Laite Funeral Home at 9 Mountain St. in Camden.

Willis E. Howe

TROY - Willis E. Howe, 93, of Troy, passed away Nov. 15, 2005, at the Dexter Healthcare Facility in Dexter, surrounded by his family. He will be sadly missed and always remembered by all those he touched. He was born Sept. 7, 1912, in Aroostook County, the son of the late John and Alice (Bowden) Howe.

Willis met and married the former Bernice Seaver on Dec. 31, 1934. She died Oct. 12, 1989. Willis was a retired self-employed carpenter by trade. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, having been a Certified Maine Guide to out-of-state hunters; he dearly loved snowmobiling and helped to establish trails throughout the area. He was a selectman and forest trustee for the town of Troy many years. He was a member of the Troy Union Church; Troy Volunteer Fire Department; Order of the Eastern Star; Star in the West Lodge No. 85; Seven Star Grange and Troy Snow Beaters Club.

He is survived by a loving daughter, Leona and her husband, Bob Ohlert, of Panama City, Fla.; a devoted daughter-in-law, Ann Howe, of Palmyra; a devoted grandson, Richard Howe and his wife, Nancy, who have overseen his care for several years; grandson, David Howe; granddaughter, Kathi and her husband, Tony Collins, all of Palmyra and Holly and her husband, Darrell Cornelius, of Panama City, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Sunnie, Amanda, Samantha, Nicholas, Nichole, Nathan, Chris, Corey, Erica and Megan; three great-great-grandchildren, Nick, Kayla and Zachri; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Bernice of 55 years; a son, Edward and several brothers and sisters.

Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, at Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A funeral service with a Masonic service was at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at the funeral home. Interment service followed at Rogers cemetery in Troy. The family stayed at the home of Richard and Nancy Howe, at 571 Detroit Rd., Troy. After the graveside service Monday, the family invited all to 571 Detroit Rd., Troy, for a time of fellowship. Donations may be made in Willis's memory to the organizations mentioned above.

Mary F. Egan

ROCKLAND - Mary F. Egan, 83, died Oct. 9, 2005 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 13, 1922 and was the daughter of Edward E. and Clara Brown Egan. She was educated in local schools and graduated from Rockland High School in 1939.

In earlier years she worked at Coastal Cleaners and the Courier-Gazette. She was also employed for more than 20 years with Van Baalens.

She was a longtime member of the Rockland Congregational Church. She enjoyed social gatherings with her many friends.

She was predeceased by her mother Clara Couhig; and three sisters, Margaret Tripp of Farmington, Lucille McLaughlin of Bath and Virginia Ogilvie of Newburyport, Mass.

She is survived by one nephew, Francis E. McLaughlin Jr. of Romana, Calif.; two nieces, Mary Boucher and her husband Edward of West Bath, and Virginia McLaughlin of Florida and Maine; and many friends.

A celebration of her life will be held Monday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. at the Rockland Congregational Church at 180 Limerock St. The Rev. Dr. D. Elizabeth Mauro will officiate. Interment will be in Sea View cemetery in Rockland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Abiding Memorial Fund, 180 Limerock St., Rockland, ME 04841; or the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are with the Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home at 110 Limerock St. in Rockland.

Charles E. Ross Sr.

OWLS HEAD - Charles E. Ross Sr., 74, died Oct. 12, 2005 at his home after an extended period of declining health.

He was born in Rockland on Dec. 3, 1930 and was the son of Walter E. and Amanda V. Hoyt Ross. He grew up in Owls Head and attended the Timber Hill School and then seventh and eighth grade at the Owls Head Grange. For his first two years of high school, he attended Gould Academy in Bethel; he was then a 1948 graduate of Rockland High School. Following high school he served in the U.S. Navy.

Returning home, Mr. Ross worked as a commercial fisherman with his father for seven years. He also worked for two years as a coastal warden on Mt. Desert Island.

On Sept. 21, 1949 he married Joyce E. Wotton at the First Baptist Church in Rockland.

In 1967 he opened Ross's Body Shop, which was the first home-operated body shop in the area. He operated that shop with his son Chipper until retiring in 1991.

Mr. Ross was an avid hunter and enjoyed many fishing trips with his good friend Louis Matheson. In 1958 he began tenting with his family, and in 1968 purchased his first of seven pickup mounted campers. In 1976 he purchased his first motor home, in which he traveled more than 200,000 miles. He owned two other motor homes after that and took his last trip just two weeks before his death.

He was a charter member of the Good Sam Club, an organization he and his wife helped bring to Maine. In 1972 they formed the Down Easters Good Sam Club, and later the Mid-Coast Good Sam Club. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Rockland.

A hobbyist woodworker, he found pleasure making Christmas gifts for friends and family. He was a consummate Harley Davidson enthusiast, owning several over the years. Although he was slowing down due to illness in 2002, he was thrilled when he purchased a new Harley Ultra Classic.

Other than his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Peter B. Ross in 1998.

He is survived by his wife Joyce E. Ross of Owls Head; three sons, Chipper Ross of South Thomaston and his companion Carla-Jo Kaler of Glen Cove, Jay Ross and his wife Kristen of Owls Head, and Brett Ross and his wife Dianna of Rockland; one daughter, Vicky Ross of Owls Head; three brothers, Clifton W. Ross, Jon H. Ross and Edward F. Ross of Owls Head; one brother-in-law, Lee Wotton and his companion Lily Beckett of Thomaston; one sister-in-law, Ruth Ross of Owls Head; six grandchildren, Chuck "C.J." Stockford, Bethany Kurr and her husband Aaron, Kendall Ross, Bryan Ross, Dustin Ross, and Brittany Ross; one great-grandchild, Grace Kurr; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. at Ingraham cemetery in Owls Head. The Revs. Gabriel Rogers and Robert E. Bell will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101; or First Baptist Church, 213 Limerock St., Rockland, ME 04841.

David Downes Perkins

SEARSMONT - David Downes Perkins, 67, of Searsmont, died Oct. 11, 2005, at a local health-care facility.

He was born in Bangor on March 17, 1938, the son of Lewis and Alice (Downes) Perkins. He graduated from John Bapst High School.

He moved to Boston and then back to Maine in the early 1980s. David was an art sculptor and had shows in the Midcoast and enjoyed welding and machinery.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Mark Perkins.

David is survived by two children, Kris Perkins and his wife, Tamela of Searsmont, and Erik Perkins of Rockland; and a brother, Frank Perkins of Quincy, Mass.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.

David Allen Harvey

BANGOR - David Allen Harvey, 42, of Bangor, died unexpectedly Oct. 13, 2005, at his residence. He was born in Belfast on Sept. 6, 1963, the son of Edward and Lucille (Seekins) Harvey.

David worked as a laborer for many years. He loved repairing bicycles, and his dream was to own and operate his own bicycle repair shop. David also enjoyed bowling and fishing.

He was predeceased by his father and one brother, Timothy Harvey. David is survived by his mother; two children, René and Derek Harvey; brothers and sisters and their families, Barbara Hayden and fiancé, Tom Thompson, Sallie Harvey and boyfriend, Herbie Bryant, Nancy Harvey and fiancé, John Galloway, Wade Harvey and wife, Tonya; and special nephews, Devin Hayden and Aaron and Jesse Harvey.

He will be greatly missed by all of his friends.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Greenlawn Cemetery, Swanville, with Bishop Hall officiating. Arrangements are under the care of Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, at 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.

Beverly A. Woodbury

THORNDIKE - Beverly A. Woodbury, 76, of Thorndike, died Oct. 15, 2005, at a local health-care facility. born June 17, 1929, in Unity, she was the daughter of Albert and Mava (Blanchard) Maxim.

Beverly graduated from Unity High School. She married Royal Woodbury on Dec. 10, 1955, and they owned and operated the Hilltop Store in Knox for 21 years. She enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing, feeding the birds, and loved spending time with her great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Royal, in 1983, both her parents, and one brother, Mahlon.

She is survived by one daughter, Donna Littlefield and her husband Earl of Thorndike; one brother, Donald Maxim and his wife Bertha of Thorndike; her twin sister, Barbara Quimby of Zephyrhills, Fla.; two granddaughters, Jennifer Thompson and her husband Michael of Thorndike and Heidi Littlefield of Thorndike; two great-grandchildren, Darren and Ashley Thompson, both of Thorndike; two sisters-in-law, Lytle Wood of Morrill and Eleanor Maxim of Unity; many nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Bill.

Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, and graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Morrill Village Cemetery.

Arrangements are with Rackliffe Funeral Home, 54 Church St., Belfast.

Brandon Robert James Fielding

THOMASTON - Brandon Robert James Fielding, 21, of Thomaston died Oct. 15, 2005 at the Knox Center for Long-Term Care in Rockland after a brief illness.

He was born Feb. 23, 1984 in Vancouver, Wash. He began his elementary education there and later attended junior high and high school in Camden.

He enjoyed working on computers and was a fan of music. He loved playing his guitar.

He is survived by his mother, Patricia Lee (Rector) Shaw and her husband Bernard of Thomaston; his father, Robert Fielding and his wife Jeannine of Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Ammie Hague of Seattle, Wash.; four brothers, Ryan Hague of Las Vegas, Nev., Adam Fielding of Grand Junction, Colo., and Shawn Fielding and Robby Fielding of Vancouver, Wash.; his maternal grandmother, Frankie Rector of Vancouver, Wash.; two uncles, Jim Rector of Vancouver, Wash. and Chris Rector of Portland, Ore.; an aunt, Sue Jordan of Vancouver, Wash.; and many cousins.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine, 87 Elm St., Suite 203, Camden, ME 04843; or Maine Children's Cancer Program, c/o Maine Medical Center Development Office, 22 Bramhall St., Portland, ME 04102.

Arrangements are with the Coast of Maine Cremation and Funeral Service in Waldoboro.

Edward James Scott Jr.

NORTHPORT - Edward James Scott Jr., 55, of Northport, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, friends and wife, Dawn Scott, who was his soul mate and loving friend for 14 precious years.

He worked at Penobscot Frozen Foods for 19 years and held various positions in the company. Maintenance was his passion.

Besides all of the friends he held so dear at PFF, he is survived by his wife, Dawn M. Scott; daughters, Kimberly Ann and Nancy Sue and her companion, Bill Peaslee; a son, Edward J. Scott III, and a daughter, Carrie Carmichael Klein, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

He was the grandfather of two precious grandchildren, Ciya Ann Freeman and Logan Daniel Peaslee, and another little Peaslee on his way who he will watch grow from heaven.

He is survived by sisters, Velma Scott, Genny Wheeler and husband, Louis, and Linda Scott; brothers, David Scott, Steven Scott and Richard Scott; mother-in-law, Patricia H. Richardson and father-in-law, Donald J. Richardson, whom he considered his very special mother and father; sister-in-law, Julie Bonin and husband, Mike Bonin; a brother-in-law, Michael Richardson and wife, Joan; many nieces and nephews; a very special brother who he held close to his heart, Winston York.

He was predeceased by his mother, Pearl Butler; his father, Edward James Scott; a sister, Daisy Leathers; a brother, Larry Scott; and a brother, Michael Scott.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
