Howard A. Bryant

BRISTOL - Howard A. Bryant, 77, a lifelong resident of Bristol, died Oct. 16, 2005 at his home.

He was born June 23, 1928 in Bristol and was the son of Ralph and Mildred (Ward) Bryant. He attended Bristol schools and graduated from Bristol High School in 1946. He married L. Annette Lewis on July 1, 1950.

At the age of 11, following the death of his dad, Howard began working weekends and summers for the state of Maine highway crew, a job that continued after graduation for nearly 20 years. He later began working as a machinist for Masters Machine Shop, where he remained for 18 years. From 1968 to 1983 he and his wife operated the Busy B's Restaurant.

A member of the Bristol Lodge of Masons for 55 years, Howard also served on the Bristol Fire Department for many years. He loved the outdoors, including boating, traveling, cooking, camping and tending his gardens, but his most cherished hobby was spending time in his workshop, which he continued to do until very recently.

Last November he lost his home in a fire. It was the home he was born in and shared with his wife for 55 years. The community (including family, friends and strangers) built a new home on the same site for him and Annette in six weeks. Many brought stories with them about why they were there helping build this home. Many said Howard had been there for them during their hard times and this was the least they could do for him now. His family said he was a caring, loving, forgiving and noble man and was fortunate to see firsthand the respect and love the community had for him.

The family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Golts, Dr. Soucy, Dr. Polkinghorn and hospice for their warm care and concern not only for Howard but also for his family during his illness.

He was predeceased by his son Scott in 1964.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Annette; his four children, Pamela S.B. Libby and her husband Randolph of South Portland, Tim Bryant and his wife Kath of South Portland, Debbie Elwell and her companion Richard Chapman of Bristol, and Jalaine Bryant and her fiancé Lawrence Lakeman; a sister, Madolyn Elliott of Portland; an aunt, Ann Ward of Westbrook; several extra special nieces and nephews; and 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to be with the family Thursday, Oct. 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. (with a Masonic ceremony at 6:30 p.m.) at the Strong Funeral Home at 612 Main St. in Damariscotta. A service to honor his memory will be held Friday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ernest Farrar officiating. Howard will be laid to rest at the Bristol Mills Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Bristol Fire Department, c/o Jeri Pendleton, New Harbor, ME 04554.
