Marc Michael Griggs

DAMARISCOTTA - Marc Michael Griggs, 84, died March 5, 2006 at Coves Edge Nursing Home after a long illness.

He was born in New Preston, Conn. on Aug. 15, 1921 and was the son of Robert and Margaret Griggs.

He was a vice president of the Batten, Barton, Durstine and Osborn Advertising Agency in New York. He graduated from the Hotchkiss School and was secretary of the Hotchkiss Alumni Association. He graduate in 1944 from Williams College, where he was president of the class, a member of the executive council, class secretary and secretary of IFC. He was a member of Gargoyle, an honorary society, and Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was also on the squash team and college champion his senior year, and commodore of the yacht club. He was later president of the Williams Alumni Association.

From 1944 to 1946 he was with the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain, USMCR.

He was on the board of governors of the Williams Club in New York City, and secretary and treasurer of the Williams Association of Fairfield County and the Red Cross Campaign Committee in Greenwich, Conn.

He is survived by his wife Kathleen of Pemaquid; four children, Marc M. Griggs Jr. of North Andover, Mass., Timothy W. Griggs of Denver, Colo., Amanda G. Miles of Coral Springs, Fla. and Kathleen W. Gesten of Boulder, Colo.; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in the spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the Williams College Scholarship Fund.

Arrangements are with the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center at 612 Main St. in Damariscotta.

Lucien Ferland

WARREN - Lucien Ferland, 65, died March 6, 2006 at his residence in Warren after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born March 12, 1940 in Sanford and was the son of Joseph and Pauline Charrette Ferland. He grew up in Sanford and attended local schools.

Lucien joined the U.S. Navy when he was 17 and served for 21 years until retiring in 1976 as a master machinist first class. He and his family lived in Westbrook while he was in the service. In 1983 he moved to Warren to be closer to his son and grandchildren. He worked the last nine years as maintenance manager for Cedarworks in Rockport.

He was a fabulous woodworker and enjoyed working with his hands, puttering around the house and spending time with his family. His family was very important to him.

He is survived by his wife Lillian Ferland of Warren; his son, Michael Ferland Sr. and his wife Kay of Union; his grandchildren, Angela Davis and her husband Kevin of Cushing, Michael Ferland Jr. and his wife Becky of Cushing, and Erika Ferland and her fiance Mike Frank of Union; his great-grandchildren, Kaleb Davis of Cushing and Myla Ferland of Union; and three brothers and three sisters.

A celebration of Lucien's life will be held Friday, March 10 at 11 a.m. at the Hall Funeral Home at 949 Main St. in Waldoboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, NE Division, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.

Arrangements are with the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waldoboro.

Dale F. Flint

PALERMO - Dale F. Flint, 65, of Palermo, died March 5, 2006, in Tulsa, Okla. She was born in North Newport on Oct. 26, 1940, the daughter of Burnes and Maude (Pomroy) Adams.

In 1961, she began her employment at Massachusetts General Hospital. She then moved to Maine and worked as head nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at the Mid-Maine Medical Center, now called Maine General Medical Center, in Waterville. After retiring, she was actively involved working in the Palermo Christian Church. She volunteered with Child Evangelism Fellowship of Central Maine. She was also volunteer director of the health-care program at Living Waters Bible Camp in Danforth. During her retirement years, she took two missionary trips to Moscow, Russia, and to Trelew, Argentina.

She was predeceased by her parents and a brother, Ralph Metievier. Dale is survived by her husband of 43 years, Herb Flint of Palermo; daughter, Deb Flint of Bakersfield, Calif., and son, Mark Flint of Decatur, Ill.; brothers and sisters, Zelda Pierce, Dennis Metievier, Gilbert Adams and Geraldine Richardson; sister-in-law, Jewell Stewart; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call 3-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 10, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 12, at Palermo Christian Church, with Pastor Ed Hatch officiating.

Those who wish may make donations in Dale's memory to Child Evangelism Fellowship of Central Maine, or Neighborhood House, 174 Congress St., Belfast, ME 04915.

Raymond Clark Ward Jr.

ROCKLAND - Raymond Clark Ward Jr., 80, died March 7, 2006 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born in Rockland on Nov. 24, 1925 and was the son of Raymond C. Ward Sr. and Anna Nystrom Ward.

He attended local schools. He began employment with Forty Fathoms in the maintenance department and continued there when it became National Sea Products. During his 40 years of employment, he only missed one day of work.

Upon retiring from National Sea Products, he went to work for a short time with Paul Benjamin Security. At the end of his career he enjoyed taking care of the keys and locks at the Trade Winds Motor Inn.

During World War II, he assisted the war effort by serving in the U.S. Navy. He served for three years as a naval aircraft mechanic and was stationed in Newport, R.I., Chicago, Ill., and Barber's Point, Hawaii.

As a young man, he met the love of his life, Lucille M. Holbrook, at the Rockland Roller Skating Rink, which was housed at the original E.L. Spear building. The two were married on June 21, 1947 and made their home in Rockland. Together they enjoyed riding Harley Davidson motorcycles and took many trips to Laconia, N.H. to participate in Bike Week. Passionate about riding, Mr. Ward dreamed he would be able to purchase a new Harley and someday ride again.

He enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips, especially with his good friend Clyde Miller. In his younger years he hunted off Beachwood Street in Thomaston and fished for mackerel off the Rockland pier. He was also very fond of tending to his rose bushes.

Always active, he was a member of the Owls Head Transportation Museum. He attended many air shows at Owls Head and Brunswick Naval Air Station. He also enjoyed the annual Rockland Lobster Festival and attended more than 50 parades. More recently he enjoyed them on the local television station.

His family remembers his willingness to help with their construction projects. He assisted his brother in building a garage and helped his son put an addition on his home. He was an accomplished woodworker, building model ships and lobsterboats to scale.

An animal lover, he had a special bond with his shizu Gizmo. He could always be found with dog treats in his truck and shared them with all the dogs he encountered. Even after his recent move to Windward Gardens, he enjoyed visits from his son's active German shepherd puppy. He also cared for the three resident fish tanks there. He soon came to call Windward Gardens home and appreciated greatly the caring staff. He often delivered the newspapers, and assisted the staff with coffee and tea time and the other residents during power outages. His family remembers that he always "made the best of it."

Mr. Ward was predeceased by his wife Lucille in 1994 and his brother Maynard Ward.

He is survived by his son, Wayne Ward and his wife Christine of Warren; his daughter, Elaine Myers and her husband George of Rockport; three brothers, John Ward and his wife Audrey of Marlboro, Mass., Charles Ward and his wife Elaine of Rockland, and Richard Ward and his wife Deborah of Camden; six grandchildren, Sonya Myers of Rockland, Kala Myers French and her husband Jeff of Rockport, Whitney Myers of Rockland, Ryan Ward of Los Angeles, Calif., Wade Ward and his wife Beth of Camden, and Peter Ward of Warren; five great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Monday, March 13 at 1 p.m. at Achorn cemetery near the Lake Avenue entrance. The Rev. Wayne Sawyer will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.

Arrangements are with the Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home in Rockland.

Mildred E. Pottle

MONTVILLE - Mildred E. Pottle, 90, of Montville, passed away peacefully March 6, 2006, at a Belfast hospital surrounded by family members. She was born March 21, 1915, the daughter of Loren and Gertrude (Whitcomb) Howard.

She was raised as an only child on Hogback Mountain and was educated at Freedom Academy. She married Adrie Giggey on April 30, 1932, and they bought a home, where she lived for 74 years except for the time they were in South Portland, where Adrie worked at the shipyard during World War II.

After the war, they returned to the homestead and became pioneers of the poultry industry, starting their business of raising poultry in 1949. Adrie died at a young age in 1957 but Mildred continued the business assisted by her son, Clayton.

Mildred enjoyed needlework and playing the piano. She was known for being a great cook. In her later years, she enjoyed spending time with family members. She was a member of Union Harvest Grange in Montville and Josiah H. Drummond Chapter OES in Thorndike, and was the oldest native in the town of Montville. She was blessed with meeting Maurice Pottle, whom she married July 20, 1967. They continued operating the farm until their retirement in the early 1980s.

Maurice predeceased her in August 1996. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Margaret (Giggey) Blood, who died March 16, 2005.

Mildred is survived by one son, Clayton Giggey and his wife, Mildred (Punkey) Giggey, of Montville; stepson, Malcolm Pottle of Scarborough; son-in-law, Leroy Blood of Winslow; grandchildren, Clayton Giggey Jr. of Damariscotta, Michael Giggey and friend, Jan, of Montville, Paul Giggey and wife, Nancy, of Brunswick, Steven Blood and fiancée, Toni, of Benton, and Elaine and husband, Scott Knowlen, of Winslow; great grandchildren, Kara Giggey of Wiscasset, Brian Giggey of Damariscotta-Falmouth, Christina (Giggey) and husband, Ronald Cook, of Montville, Jennifer Giggey and friend, Will, of Randolph, Katie Knowlen of Winslow, Matt and Brian Ingals of Brunswick; and great-great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Victoria Cook of Montville.

Visiting hours were held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 9, with a service at 7 p.m. at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast. Spring burial will take place at the Halldale Cemetery, Montville. Those wishing to make memorial donations may do so to the Waldo County General Hospital, Hospice Unit, 116 Northport Ave., Belfast, ME 04915.

Daniel M. Pushor

UNITY - Daniel M. Pushor, 85, of Unity, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at TallPines in Belfast. He was born in Unity on Aug. 2, 1920, the son of Lewis and Jennie (Stevens) Pushor.

Mr. Pushor was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Marguerite Bragg Pushor, and an infant son.

He is survived by his daughter, Gladys Murray, and her husband, Lou, of Benton; two sons, Wallace Moran of Bangor and Daniel L. Pushor of Unity; five grandchildren, Jean Salley and her husband, Clifford, Linda Humphrey, James Hubbard Jr., Daniel L. Pushor II and his wife, Heather, and Katrina M. Littlefield and her husband, Jeffrey; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no services at this time. Condolences may be expressed at lawrybrothers.com. Arrangements are with Lawry Brothers Memorial and Remembrance Centre, 42 Depot St., Unity.

Robert M. Maxcy

WALDOBORO - Robert M. Maxcy, fire chief, 76, of Waldoboro, died March 9, 2006 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta with his family by his side after a long illness.

He was born Nov. 17, 1929 in Thomaston and was the son of the late Earl T. and Ruth (Lermond) Maxcy.

Bob was a graduate of Thomaston High School and served honorably with the U.S. Air Force from 1947 to 1950, attaining the rank of gunnery sergeant. On Nov. 10, 1950 he married Muriel "Mickey" A. Parlin.

In 1964 he was appointed chief of the Waldoboro Fire Department, a position he held for nearly 42 years until the time of his death. Over the years he worked at Bath Iron Works, as a patrol officer for the Waldoboro Police Department, in excavation with his brother Earle "Doc" Maxcy, as custodian for the Lincoln County Courthouse for 11 years, and as manager of the Waldoboro, Friendship and Cushing Transfer Station until his retirement. He was a member of the Waldoboro Firemens Association, Knox County Firemens Association, Maine State Federation of Firefighters and Lincoln County Fire Chiefs.

He enjoyed hunting -- he was thankful to receive a moose permit -- and fishing and camping, especially in Shirley. He will be remembered by his family and friends as an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and he loved the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of more than 53 years on March 21, 2004; and his brother Earle "Doc" Maxcy in 2005.

He is survived by five children, Deborah McLaughlin and her husband Regginald of Richmond, Marcia A. Maxcy and her husband John Lamoureux of Wilton, Marc A. Maxcy and Beverly Michaud of Dover-Foxcroft, Dee Maxcy and her partner K. Bryan Parker of Tremont, and Darryl Maxcy and his wife Teresa of Richmond; a brother, Harlan Maxcy and his wife Myra of Friendship; a sister, Marilyn Levansaler and her husband Cedric of Yarmouth; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on the family on Monday, March 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Orff's Corner Community Church on Route 32 North in Waldoboro. A funeral will be held on Tueday, March 14 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Waldoboro on Grace Avenue (next to Moody's Diner) off Route 1 in Waldoboro. Pastor Thomas Rawley will officiate. Interment will follow in the Orff's Corner cemetery on Route 32 North in Waldoboro.

Memorial donations may be made to the Robert M. Maxcy Fire Displacement Fund for residents of the town of Waldoboro, P.O. Box J, Waldoboro, ME 04572.

Arrangements are with the Coast of Maine Cremation and Funeral Service in Waldoboro.

Gail L. Prescott

ROCKLAND - Gail L. Prescott, 66, of Rockland died March 9, 2006 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

She was born, July 10, 1939 in Rockland. She attended Rockland area schools. For many years she worked at National Sea Products and other fish processing plants, and as a housekeeper. For the past four years she was a security guard at the Farnsworth Art Museum.

She is survived by two sons, Russell Prescott and his wife Heidi of Winslow, and Adam Prescott of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Linda Willey and her husband Lanny Jr. of Warren; five grandchildren, Cortney, Lanny III, Dustin, Lindsay and R.J.; several sisters; and many nieces, nephews and good friends.

She was predeceased by her Aunt Bea who raised her from childhood; and two brothers.

Gail will be remembered by her family and friends as a special mom and Nana with a caring heart.

Services will be at the convenience of her family.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330-5689.

Michael Elijah Jones

WARREN - Michael Elijah Jones, 25, formerly of Vinalhaven, died unexpectedly on March 9, 2006 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born in Vinalhaven on Feb. 9, 1981 and was the son of Anthony V. and Doreen Woodcock Jones.

A resident of the Arboretum at Beacon Family Living, Michael was known for his happy, loving and all-encompassing smile. He loved hanging out with good friends he considered family, which included his housemates John and Billy, his caregiver Jo Fales, and his agency director Joe Kuhn. He enjoyed a special bond with his one-on-one caregiver Kathy Dixon.

He always looked forward to his Wednesday messages from his friend Sue Cole.

He particularly enjoyed being outdoors, flying kites, playing in the water at the beach and having his "special parties," which always included good food, talking toys, friends and family.

Michael also enjoyed watching "Sesame Street" and "Wheel of Fortune" and his favorite movies were "Bambi" and "The Sound of Music."

He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother Emily Woodcock in 2002.

He is survived by his parents Anthony and Doreen of Vinalhaven; his brother Brandon Vincent Jones of Topsham; two great-aunts, Marion Woodcock and Mary Ewell of Vinalhaven; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit on Thursday, March 16 from noon to 7 p.m. at the Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home at 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 6 at 11 a.m. at Pleasant River Chapel in Vinalhaven. Elder Robert Candage will officiate. Interment will follow in Browns Head Cemetery.
