Shirley F. Jones

JEFFERSON - Shirley F. Jones, 86, of Jefferson died March 12, 2006 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

She was born Feb. 5, 1920 in Malden, Mass. and was the daughter of Frederic and Irene McLain Francis. She grew up in Malden and graduated from Malden High School. She and her family summered in Pemaquid when she was young.

Her first husband, Theodore Swift, died in 1945. In 1947 she married Harold W. "Tom" Jones and the couple ran Jone's Antique Shop and Auction Hall in Jefferson for many years until retiring in 2000.

She loved playing beano, watching stock-car racing and going to lawn sales. She was a member of the Ladies Auxilliary in Washington. She and her family were very appreciative of the special care she got from Fred and Diane Smith during the last four months and the help of Robert and Valerie Jones throughout the years.

She was predeceased by her sister Eleanor Schoppee in 1991.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Tom Jones of Jefferson; her daughter, Marcia Prock and her husband Maynard of Waldoboro; her grandchildren, Theodore "Todd" Prock of Waldoboro and Darcy Prock of Cape Elizabeth; her great-grandchildren, Brittany Prock and Cameron Prock of Waldoboro and Chelsea and Shelby Cogan of Cape Elizabeth; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday, March 15 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home at 949 Main St. in Waldoboro. A graveside service will be held Thursday, March 16 at 11 a.m. at the Fairview cemetery in Jefferson. The Rev. Robert Dorr will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate, 343 Gorham Road, South Portland, ME 04106; or Maine Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, P.O. Box 8730, Portland, ME 04104.

Arrangements are with the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service at 949 Main St. in Waldoboro.

Clement Lakeman Kimball

SEARSPORT - Clement Lakeman Kimball, 74, of Searsport, passed away after a long illness at the home of his daughter surrounded by his family. born in Glenwood Landing, N.Y. on Sept. 14, 1931, to Wallace and Gertrude (Lartourette) Kimball.

In his earlier years, he worked at Richardson's Dairy Farm in Middleton, Mass., and was a member of the Middleton Fire Department. After moving to Maine, he drove a truck for many years for Merrill Transport Co., formerly of Searsport. He worked at the tannery in Camden for several years. He enjoyed cooking, hunting, fishing, gardening and sports; and he was deeply loved by his family and friends. He was a devoted, caring and supportive husband and father.

Mr. Kimball was predeceased by his loving wife of nearly 54 years, Shirley Jean (Eaton) Kimball, in May 2004; a brother, George, of Middleton, Mass.; a brother, Wallace, of Belfast; and a sister, Jean, of Middleboro, Mass.

Survivors include son Kenneth and his wife, Kathy, of Jackson; son Leroy and his wife, Penny, of Cape Elizabeth; daughter Karen Agana and her husband, Alfredo, of Stockton Springs; daughter Jackie Howard and her husband, Ricky, of Searsport; daughter Cindy Gibbs and her husband, Gene, of Searsport; son Sam and his wife, Cathy, of Augusta; son Christian and his wife, Lynn, of Orange Park, Fla.; daughter Nancy and her companion, John, of Brooklyn, N.Y. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, sisters Esther Dudley and Eileen Bragdon of Searsport, and several nephews and nieces.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 12, 2006, at Young Funeral Home, 31 West Main St., Searsport, with Rev. David Abbott officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Waldo County Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 287, Belfast, ME 04915.

Norman Martin

SEARSPORT - Norman P. Martin, 82, died March 11, 2006, at a Belfast hospital. He was born Feb. 16, 1924, in Hamlin, son of Peter R. and Edna M. (Cormier) Martin.

Norman worked at Maplewood Poultry Plant and retired from Penobscot Poultry, Belfast, after many years of service. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Belfast, enjoyed antique cars and trucks, going to the Owls Head Transportation Museum and taking photographs.

He is survived by his children, Armand R. Martin and his wife, Ella, of Searsmont, Gloria Oldenburg and her husband, William, Richard Martin and his wife, Georgia, of Jay, James Martin and his wife, Gilde, of Italy; 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Irene Thibodeau of Caribou, Carmen Thibodeau and her husband, Alden, of Caribou, Conrad Martin of Van Buren, Pauline Ouellette of Van Buren, Gerald Martin and his wife, Mary, of Lisbon Falls; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Lena M. Martin in 2001; sisters, Alfreda Doucette, Gertrude Ouellete.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, March 18, at Young Funeral Home 31 West Main St., Searsport. Spring Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Searsport.

Helen T. Cartaglia

ROCKLAND - Helen T. Cartaglia, 89, died March 4, 2006 at Shore Village Nursing Center following a short illness.

She was born in Troy, N.Y. on Sept. 18, 1916 and was the daughter of Urban and Laura Fitzgerald Weingartner. She was a graduate of Troy High School.

On May 22, 1935 she married Francis C. Cartaglia who was an officer in the U.S. Army. Together they traveled around the world, fulfilling a childhood dream of hers.

Following Col. Francis Cartaglia's retirement, the couple resided in Colorado where they made their home for many years.

After the death of her husband, Helen continued to travel with her daughter to many interesting places. She was always ready to see a new place and excited to try new things.

She moved to Rockland four years ago and made her home at Bartlett Woods where she had many friends. She was a communicant at St. Bernard's Catholic Church.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1975 and her son Paul A. Cartaglia in 2001.

She is survived by her daughter, Marion Grant and her husband Harry of Rockland; two sons, Francis C. Cartaglia Jr. and his wife Mia of Chelmsford, Mass., and David U. Cartaglia and his wife Joanne of Lake Havesu, Ariz.; a sister, Katherine Nichols of Troy, N.Y.; a daughter-in-law, Neenah Cartaglia of Darby, Mont.; two grandsons, Duane Cartaglia and his wife Kerri, and Francis C. Cartaglia III and his wife Debbie; three granddaughters, Dede Veale and her husband Tim of Berwyn, Pa., and Tamera and Kieonna Cartaglia of Darby, Mont.; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Helen's life on Sunday, March 19 at 2:30 p.m. at Bartlett Woods at 20 Bartlett Drive in Rockland.

Helen will be laid to rest next to her husband at Fort Logan National cemetery in Denver, Colo.

Arrangements are with the Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchison Funeral Home at 110 Limerock St. in Rockland.

Virginia G. Salisbury

NORTHPORT - Virginia G. Salisbury, of Northport, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006. She was born Jan. 26, 1923, in Andover, Maine, the daughter of Jesse and Winnefred (Learned) Glover.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald B. Salisbury; a brother, Harold Glover; and a sister, Editha Aldrich.

Virginia is survived by her three sons, Gerald R. Salisbury and wife, Veronica of Miami, Fla., Darrell J. Salisbury of Northport and David M. Salisbury and wife, Donna of Searsmont; her three siblings, Christine Ladd, Natalie Littlehale and Sylvanis Glover, all of Andover; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend and sister-in-law, Molly Glover of Andover.

She enjoyed restoring old trunks, knitting and sewing old items of clothing. She also loved to make rugs and afghans.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday March 16, 2006, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, ME.

Richard C. Smyth

DAMARISCOTTA - Richard C. Smyth, 92, of Damariscotta died March 13, 2006.

He was an international authority on management and salesmen compensation, and founder and president of the management consulting firm Smyth & Murphy Associates in New York City. He was author of "Financial Incentives for Management" (McGraw-Hill, 1960), and co-author of "Job Evaluation and Employee Rating" (McGraw Hill, 1943), "Bargaining with Organized Labor" (Funk & Wagnalls, 1946), and "Compensating and Motivating a Field Sales Force" (American Management Association, 1970).

He was a loving and devoted husband and father and an avid traveler and sailor, having visited more than 50 countries around the world.

His devotion to his family and wonderful sense of humor will be missed.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Amelia; their three children, Christopher, Donald and Wendy; his daughters-in-law, Sylvia and Diana; four grandchildren, David and Andrew Smyth, Grant Smyth and his wife Melanie, and Donna Roccaforte and her husband Joseph; three great-grandchildren, Jessica and Joseph Roccaforte and Jesse Smyth; and a sister, Patricia Guild.

A memorial service is planned for later in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are with the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center at 612 Main St. in Damariscotta.

Eleanor Jean Saxe Glassman

CAMDEN - Eleanor Jean Saxe Glassman, 90, died peacefully on March 13, 2006 at The Courtyard at Quarry Hill. She was also known as "Elly" and "Mrs. G."

She was born in Brookline, Mass. on Aug. 12, 1915 and was the daughter of Samuel and Goldie Rappaport Saxe. She was a graduate of Brookline High School and Boston University. She also attended Columbia Graduate School.

During her marriage of 68 years to Joel Glassman, she lived first in Brookline, Mass. where she was active in the League of Women Voters and other civic affairs. The couple then moved to Nashville, Tenn. where she helped create the Peabody Language Development Kit, which became a teaching model for public schools. Later she and Joel moved to Florence, Italy where they lived for 18 years. During this time, Elly assisted her husband with his shoe design consulting service. In 1999 they returned from Italy, settling in Rockport.

Elly is survived by her husband of Camden; four children, Judith Daniels and her husband Lee Webb of Union, Linda Beaty of Sarasota, Fla., Thomas Glassman and his wife Linda of Medford, Ore., and Stacey Glassman of Lincolnville; her sister Doris Mermelstein of Deal, N.J; a niece with whom she enjoyed a special friendship, Nancy Glassman of Searsmont; and many special friends.

A celebration of Elly's life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Family Planning Association, P.O. Box 866, Rockland, ME 04841; or Coastal Mountains Land Trust, 101 Mount Battie St., Camden, ME 04843.

Duane L. Pease

APPLETON - Duane L. Pease, 48, died unexpectedly on March 12, 2006 at his home from complications of heart disease.

He was born in Rockland on July 2, 1957 and was the son of A. Lawrence and Janet Weymouth Pease. He was a 1975 graduate of Rockland District High School. An accomplished athlete, he played baseball, basketball and football while in high school and was named baseball most valuable player in 1973-1974, rookie of the year for basketball in 1973-1974 and an all star in 1974-1975.

He worked in various jobs in Maine and Florida before beginning studies at the University of Maine at Orono. He graduated in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in accounting.

On Nov. 17, 1984 he married Lisa E. Ford at Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church in Rockland.

The couple moved to Florida and lived at Riviera Beach before returning to Maine. They lived briefly in Bangor and for more than six years in Ellsworth.

While living in Ellsworth, Duane worked as an office assistant and in sales. He was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and as treasurer, taught AWANA and was active in the nursing home ministry.

In 1994 he moved with his wife and children to Appleton, where the family has since resided.

He worked briefly as a salesman at Rockland Ford and in July 1995 began employment at E.L. Spear in Rockland. One of that company's principals, Everett L. Spear III, said of Duane, "He worked his way through the company, becoming a valued and trusted employee." Although his most recent position of bookkeeper often confined him to an office, Duane still enjoyed getting out on the sales floor to interact with and help customers.

He was an active member of the South Hope Community Church where he served as a deacon, on various boards and for the past three years as assistant coach of South Hope Christian School's Royals Basketball Team.

From the summer of 1995 through August 2000, he served as interim pastor at the Finish Congregational Church in South Thomaston and he continued in fellowship with many of that congregation.

A loving and devoted husband, father and friend, Duane loved to play baseball and basketball with his children and often sang in area churches with his daughter Amelia. An avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan, he rarely missed a game and enjoyed the games with his father and children. His wife said he was her "rock" and also always concerned about the welfare of others.

Besides his wife Lisa of Appleton and parents of Hope, Duane is survived by his children, Nicholas A., Samuel E., Caleb M., Amelia L. and Rachel V. Pease of Appleton; his sisters, Kris Smith of Fitchburg, Mass., and Iris Stout and her husband Walter of Huntingdon Valley, Pa.; his nieces and nephews, Eric Fleming and his wife Amy of Pennsylvania, Lara Fleming of Hope, Selena Berlied and her husband Brad of Massachusetts, and Jeffrey Smith of Massachusetts; his parents-in-law, Alton and Barbara Ford of Rockport; his brother-in-law, Travis Ford and his wife Michelle of Appleton; his wife's grandmother, Oleitta MacKinnon of Florida and Rockland; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit Wednesday, March 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home at 110 Limerock St. in Rockland.

A celebration of Duane's life will be held Thursday, March 16 at 3 p.m. at Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church at 1 Waldo Ave. in Rockland. Pastor Norman Finnemore will officiate. Interment will be at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the South Hope Christian School, 142 Main St., Hope, ME 04847.

Fanny Gaillet-Guerlain

ROCKPORT - Fanny Gaillet-Guerlain, 74, beloved wife of Bernard Guerlain, died peacefully on March 15, 2006 at the Anderson Inn at Quarry Hill surrounded by her husband and eight children.

She was born on Feb. 19, 1932 in Turcoing, France and was the daughter of Emile B. and Elisabeth (Avot) Gaillet. She lived in France until her family moved to New York in 1946.

On July 2, 1949 she married Bernard Guerlain in Larchmont, N.Y.

Mr. and Mrs. Guerlain lived for 30 years in Redding, Conn. where they raised their family of eight children.

Mrs. Guerlain worked for many years as an accountant for Special Papers, a paper import company in Redding. She was an active volunteer, especially with the League of Women Voters.

In 1988, she and her husband moved to Rockport and enjoyed spending the winter months in Nokomis, Fla.

She was an active communicant at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Osprey, Fla. and Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church in Camden. She was a founding member and former treasurer of the Hospitality House in Rockport, and a volunteer at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland and the Rockport Public Library.

Her family said she was a skilled quilter and bridge player. She was an avid reader and studied French literature. She took painting classes and studied religion and philosophy. She brought beauty wherever she went and to her home, art and gardens. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her eight children, Jean-Nicholas Guerlain of Denver, Colo., Thierry Guerlain and his wife Julie Hendrickson of Montpelier, Vt., Elisabeth Talbot and her husband Paul Fischer of Avon, Conn., Claude Guerlain and her husband Scott Karpuk of Northboro, Mass., Peter Guerlain and his wife Kimberly of Boonton, N.J., Natalie Guerlain and her husband Eric Denoyer of Fairfield, Conn., Charoline Feroleto and her husband Thomas of Easton, Conn., and Stephanie Guerlain and her husband Robert Haschart of Charlottesville, Va.; one brother, Bernard Gailleto and his wife Diane of Sarasota, Fla.; four sisters, Charlotte Stancioff and her husband Dimitri of Camden, Elizabeth Delavigne of Nokomis, Fla., Helen DeNeergaard and her husband William of Naples, Fla., and Edith Hadik of Water Mill, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be held Saturday, March 18 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church in Camden with the Rev. Arthur Pechillo officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the mass at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, 7 Union St., Camden, ME 04843; the Rockport Public Library, P.O. Box 8, Rockport, ME 04856; or Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Music Fund, 838 S. Tamiami Trail, Osprey, FL 34229.

Arrangements are with the Laite Funeral Home at 9 Mountain St. in Camden.
