Doris Gorrie

SANFORD - Doris B. Gorrie, 86, of Sanford died Friday at Newton Center.

She was born Sept. 12, 1912 in Portland, a daughter of William and Hazel Church Baker.

She married Earle K. Gorrie July 1, 1939 and the family moved to Sanford from Westbrook in 1945.

Mrs. Gorrie began her long teaching career that year at the former Longfellow School and retired from Emerson School in 1975.

She was a member of North Parish Congregational Chburch, the church library committee and the Searchlight Club. As well, she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Her husband died previously.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy C. Coutts of Sanford; a sister, Viola Walker of Wolfeboro, N.H.; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a niece and a nephew.

Walter Johnson

KENNEBUNK - Former resident Walter L. Johnson, 73, of Leach Hill Road, Casco, died Friday at Maine Medical Center, Portland.

He was born June 20, 1925 in North Kennebunkport, a son of Walter L. and Evelyn Going Johnson Sr., and attended Kennebunk schools.

Mr. Johnson was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Following the war, he was a self-employed truck driver, delivering lumber throughout New England. He worked for Pepperell Mfg. Co. in Biddeford for several years and in 1968, along with his family, moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where he worked with Bell Hellicopter Co. He was a foreman with MESCO Building Products Co., fabricating metal structures and products in Grapevine, Texas for more than 17 years.

In 1995, after retirement, he moved back to Maine. A keen outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Johnson was a member of the American Legion and the VFW of Kennebunk.

He was predeceased by a brother, Gilbert F. Johnson.

Survivors iunclude his wife of 49 years, June Bunnell Johnson of Casco; two sons, Eric Walter of Port Aransas, Texas and Gilbert Fred of The Woodlands, Texas; a daughter, Taloma B. Nickerson of Arundel; a sister, Katherine Condon of Kennebunk; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Christine Kane

SANFORD - Christine H. Kane, 65, of Adams Street, died Friday at Maine Medical Center, Portland.

She was born Jan. 25, 1933 in Millinocket, a daughter of Frank and Evelyn Leaman Hopper, graduated from Caribou High School and the former Farmington State Teacher’s College.

Mrs. Kane taught home economics and evening school classes at Schenk High School in East Millinocket and moved to Sanford in 1967, where she taught evening classes and driver’s training at Sanford High School.

Mrs. Kane was a member of Unity Baptist Church, Caribou and a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, East Millinocket. She was employed by SAGA Food Services, was a member of the College Club and was active in the former Community Health Association. Mrs. Kane volunteered for the American Red Cross and Goodall Hospital.

A craftswoman, she particualrly enjoyed working with stained glass.

An athlete in hugh school and college, she was an avid bowler.

Mrs. Kane was predeceased by a brother, Lewis Hopper.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Thomas J. Kane; a son, Joseph A. of Biddeford; a daughter, Ellen (Mrs. Craig) Stevens of Baton Rouge, La.; three sisters, Constance Duncan of Fort Fairfield, Mary Etta Richards of Presque Isle and Catherine Moore of Massena, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

Robert Morrison

WELLS - Robert W. Morrison, 89, of Forest Lane and formerly of Union, N.J., died Friday at Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Kennebunk.

He was born July 19, 1909 in Dublin, Ireland, a son of Alexander and Jane Armstrong Morrison and was a graduate of Mountjoy School, Dublin. He came to America as a young man and was a mechanical engineering graduate of New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Mr. Morrison was employed by the Oscar Vogelbach Company of Newark, N.J., where he was active in the construction of Bayonne Naval Air Base.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Merchant Marine and served aboard the Frelinghyson and the Chester Valley, running war materials into Murmansk, Russia, for which he was awarded a bronze medal by the former Soviet Union in 1991.

Following his wartime service, he was a founding partner of Morrison, Zimmer, Borton and O’Connor of Union, N.J, a consulting and engineering firm, working primarily throughout New Jersey and New York.

Mr. Morrison was a licensed professional engineer in Maine, N.Y., N.J. and Vermont, and was president of the Union County Chapter of the Professional Engineering Society and an active member of ASHRAE.

He was secretary and president of the Robert Burns Society of the City of New York; a member of the St. Andrews Societies of Maine and New York, and a member of the America Merchant Marines veterans organization, New England Chapter.

After retirement, he moved to Wells, where he served as a director of the Wells Public Library, member of the Wells Planning Board and was a charter member of the Ogunquit Rotary Club.

Mr. Morrison was a member of the South Congregational Church, Kennebunkport, and served on a number of its committees. He was a member of Arundel Lodge, AF and AM, Kennebunkport.

Survivors include his wife, Anita Kampe Morrison of Wells; and a daughter, Jean M. Wagner of Englewood, Colo.

Larry Gress

KENNEBUNK - Larry A. Gress, 59, of Constitution Road, died of cancer Friday at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born Jan. 1, 1940 in Portsmouth, Ohio, a son of Paul and Freda Holschuh Gress, and was a graduate of West High School in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from Ohio State University, where he was active in the ROTC, and earned his M.B.A. from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. During that time he met and married his wife of 34 years, Victoria Roberts.

Mr. Gress was employed as a salesman for the Xerox Corporation in Columbus and Newark, Ohio and Washington, D.C. before being transferred to Maine. The Gress family has been residents of Kennebunk for 26 years.

He coached Little League softball, led the Christ Church youth group for eight years, was president of the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport Athletic Boosters and was a member of the Kennebunk Rotary Club. He also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, was chairman of the Board of Trustees for South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport, was president of the York County Board of Realtors and was active in the Maine Association of Realtors.

Mr. Gress workd as a real estate broker with Coldwell Banker, Harnden Beecher in Lower Village and a regional director for Excel Communications Corp. In 1998, he joined Coldwell Banker’s Diamond Society and survivors say he was regarded as a trustworthy and well-respected member of southern Maine’s real estate community.

His interests included friends, travel and outdoor activities, but his family came first, and survivors say he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of Kennebunk; three daughters, Traca Gress Marshall of South Portland, Lorie Allyn of Portland and Kristen Irene Martin of Kennebunk; and two grandchildren, Logan and Jackson Gress Marshall of South Portland.

Claire Grimaldi

BIDDEFORD - Former resident Claire Edmond Grimaldi, 73, died Saturday at a Mercy Hospital in Portland.

She was born Sept. 7, 1925 in Biddeford, a daughter of Frank X. and M. Louise Fournier Emond, attended Presentation of Mary School in Hudson, N.H. and was a 1942 graduate of St. Andre’s High School in Biddeford.

Mrs. Grimaldi was a receptionist at WPOR in the 1940s and a clerk at Beneficial Loan in Portland in the early 1950s. She was employed by First National Stores for 20 years, retiring in 1981 as head bookkeeper at the Washington Avenue store.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Alexander M. Grimaldi of Portland; a daughter, Margo (Mrs. Mark) Hirtle of Saco; a stepson, John M. of Portland; six sisters, Theresa (Mrs. Ralph) Tully of Portland, Gertrude (Mrs. John P.) Conroy of Biddeford, Cecile (Mrs. Gerard) Fecteau of Bay View, Saco, Bernadette (Mrs. Bernard) Des Roberts of Augusta and Florida, Florence R. Emond of Hills Beach and Frances (Mrs. Conrad) Boilard of Biddeford; two grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.

Helena Marsh

KENNEBUNK - Helena Haskell Marsh, 76, of Huntington Common, died Friday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born June 20, 1922 in Lewiston, a daughter of Weston B. and Pauline Derby Haskell, and attended Dana Hall Academy in Wellesley, Mass. and the Connecticut College for Women in New Haven, Conn.

She married Robert P. Marsh, a Boston food brokerage executive, and the family lived in Newton and Dover, Mass. until they became permanent residents of Kennenbunkport in 1982.

An avid gardener and golfer, she was a longtime member of Brae Burn Country Club in Newton and the Webhannet Golf Course in Kennebunk Beach.

She was predeceased by her husband and by brothers Weston B. Haskell and Richard Haskell.

Survivors include two daughters, Paula Marsh Rines of Kittery Point and Cynthia Marsh Fink of Clarksville, Tenn., and three grandsons, William B. Rines and Wesley R. and Haskell H. Fink.

Leonard Surran

BIDDEFORD - Leonard C. Surran, 87, formerly of Hull, Mass., died Saturday at Southridge Living Center.

He was born Jan. 14, 1912 in Millville, N.J., a son of David and Arabella Cassaboon Surran, and was educated in Millville schools.

Mr. Surran enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July 1929 and served on submarines during World War II and the Kirean Conflict. He served as instructor in Philadelphia, Pa.; Hampson Roads, Va.; the Naval Shipyard in Boston; submarine school in New London, Conn.; Engineman School in Great Lakes, Ill. and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He served on the USS Detroit, Omaha, Henderson, Pope, Paul Jones, Canopus, Lea, McLeish, Herring, Threadfin, Grampus, Sea Lion, Seal and Cutlass.

Mr. Surran retired from the Navy after 29 years and was employed by Electric Boat/General Dynamics for 12 years, where he was a member of the team that built the first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus.

Mr. Surran retired in 1970 and lived in Hull, moving to Biddeford in 1996.

He was a member of the Elks, Oddfellows and V.F.W.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Constance Walker Surran, in 1962 and his second wife, Melvina V. Langlois Surran, in 1995.

Survivors include two sons, John D. of Saco and Michael R. of Kennebunk; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Dora Rochon

SACO - Former resident Dora Rochon, 97, died Saturday at Pine Point Nursing Care Center in Scarborough.

She was born May 19, 1901 in Windsor Mills, Quebec, Canada, a daughter of Johnnie and Elise Bergeron Pothier, moved to Sanford at a young age and was educated there.

In 1933 she married Oscar Rochon in Montreal, Quebec.

Mrs. Rochon was employed at local textile mills for many years, retiring in the early 1970s. She was a member of the Ross Center Senior Citizens Club and had been a volunteer for its lunch program.

She enjoyed baseball and had followed Red Sox games for many years. Among her interests were playing cards, dining out and entertaining.

She was predeceased by her husband on June 12, 1980.

Survivors include two daughters, Madeleine (Mrs. Norman) Morrison and Lorraine Ketchum, both of Saco; a sister, Lucianna Lemay of Windsor, Conn.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
