Laura S. Saunders

CAMDEN - Laura S. Saunders, 91, died April 23, 2006, at her cottage at Quarry Hill.

Born in Watertown, Mass. on Jan. 3, 1915, she was the daughter of Harry Albert and Ethel Murch Smith. Her father owned a dairy company in Newton, Mass., where she grew up as an only child.

In 1935, Laura graduated from Simmons College with a degree in library science. She worked as a full-time librarian in the public library in Newton from 1936 until 1948 and from 1952 to 1959 worked part time in the Springfield, Mass. city library. She completed her career at the Minnechaug Regional High School, retiring in 1963.

On Sept. 10, 1948, Laura married John A. Saunders, a banker whom she met on Block Island. The couple loved boats, hiking, the outdoors and regularly visited Evans Notch -- their favorite place for mountain climbing in the White Mountains. They were also avid downhill skiers.

They first lived in Springfield, Mass. and then moved to Wilbraham, Mass. where they lived for many years. Laura and John purchased property in Friendship and slowly and lovingly built a house to which they retired. John and Laura loved their home in Friendship, planting many types of flowers, bushes and trees and cultivating many friends.

John died in October 1996, and Laura sold the Friendship house. She moved first to Penobscot Shores in Belfast and then to her cottage at Quarry Hill in Camden. There she pursued another great love, maritime history, which she acquired while studying the history of the shipbuilding industry in Saunderstown, R.I., where her husband's family originated. This resulted in the development of a very strong and enduring relationship with Mystic Seaport.

Upon moving to Maine, among their many projects, John and Laura recorded oral histories of people related to sailing ferries on Penobscot Bay. After John's death, Laura compiled this information into a booklet, which was published in 2005 for the benefit of the Penobscot Marine Museum.

Laura published a number of articles, including some in Maine Boats and Harbors magazine, sometimes under the pseudonym of "Les Saunders". In 2004 at the Penobscot Marine Museum's annual Penobscot Bay Regional History Conference, Laura gave a stunning paper on Capt. Hollis Higgins of Trenton and his wife, Belle Wooster Higgins, who sailed with her husband his entire career. She also wrote a number of articles for the Penobscot Marine Museum's newsletter, Bay Chronicle.

Laura was an active member of the art history group of the American Association of University Women and traveled to college libraries around the state to research topics for its monthly meetings. She was also a dedicated and beloved volunteer at the Penobscot Marine Museum's Stephen Phillips Memorial Library for 10 years, helping researchers and organizing manuscript collections, most notably the Swann and Son shipping papers. This work resulted in many of the articles she published.

Laura's greatest gift was her ability to connect and make friends with people of all ages. She lived life to the fullest; her interests were many and varied. Laura's was a life well lived. Her example guides all who knew her.

Laura is survived by two godchildren, Sarah M. Gaines and Hannan R. Gaines; numerous friends; and admirers of all ages.

A celebration of Laura's life will be held Saturday, April 29 at 11 a.m. in the Mayflower Room of the First Congregational Church of Camden.

Memorial donations may be made to the Penobscot Marine Museum, P.O. Box 498, Searsport, ME 04974.

An avid consumer of politics, history, biographies, CNN and C-SPAN, she freely shared her opinions. She was a lifelong Democrat and active for many years in the Democratic Party. Eileen was also involved in the Maine State Employees Association and served as its secretary.

Eileen's interests included gardening, crocheting and cooking. Her other keen passion was finding a good deal at Goodwill Industries, Reny's Department Store and local flea markets.
