Erwin E. Piper spring burial

PITTSFIELD - Erwin E. Piper died January 17, 2006. A graveside committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday June 3, 2006 at Village Cemetery, Peltoma Ave, Pittsfield.

Robert A. Edwards, Sr.

ROCKLAND - Robert A. Edwards Sr., 49, died unexpectedly Sunday, May 28, 2006 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Born in Rockland on June 18, 1956, he was the son of Lewis J. and Flora A. Lewis Edwards. Educated in local schools he was a 1974 graduate of Rockland District High School.

Early in his career, he worked at the Camden Tannery until it closed and for the next several years worked with Bumblebee Construction Co. Most recently, he was employed as a well-driller apprentice with Knowlton Well Drilling of St. George.

He married Debra L. Flaherty in Rockland on June 18, 1985. The couple has resided here since that time.

He enjoyed playing guitar with his son and grandson, working on cars and spending time with his grandchildren. He was looking forward to the birth of his fifth grandchild later this year.

Bob had a special relationship with his sister-in-law, affectionately referring to one another as "Darling".

He is survived by his wife; his son, Robert A. Jr. and his wife Valarie of Rockland, his brother, Lewis Edwards and his wife Shelia of Rockland; his two sisters, Lugene Jackson and her husband Larry of Florida and Kathlene Flaherty and her husband Roland of Florida; his brother-in-law Ben Bixby of Jefferson; his uncle, Everette Carter and his wife Norma of Turner; his aunt Betty Gray of Connecticut; his four grandchildren, Chloe Edwards, David, Anaya and Megan Miller; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, June 5th, at Achorn Cemetery, Old County Road, Rockland. The Reverend Mark Holden will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Portland Office, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101.

Arrangements are with the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home in Rockland.

Roscoe Leroy Lindsey

THOMASTON - Roscoe Leroy Lindsey, 82, died on Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at The Knox Rehabilitation Center in Rockland after a short illness.

He was born in Rockland on Sept. 12, 1923, the son of Florence Larrabee Lindsey and Rodney Lindsey. He attended Rockland schools.

He married Ida Watts on April 4, 1948 and they made their home in Thomaston. They had one daughter Rose Anne Lindsey.

During World War II he served with the U.S. Marines in the 8th Amtrac Battalian at the rank of corporal. He was an amphibious trac crewman and rifle sharpshooter. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater from July 1944 to February 1946. He saw action in the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa.

He worked for Knowlton Bros. Moving Service and at the Shell Service Station on Park Street in Rockland in his early years. In later years, he worked for Arthur Henry's Crane Service as a backhoe and crane operator. He also worked for the Newburt & Wallace Boat Yard for a short time.

He was a long time National Rifle Association member and an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed going to his hunting camp in Bowerbank on hunting and fishing trips. He also enjoyed saltwater fishing for striped bass and bluefish.

He was a member of the New County Flying Club and learned to fly from instructor Arthur Harjula at the Knox County Airport on Route 1 in Thomaston.

He was predeceased by his wife; parents; his two brothers, Charles and Maurice Lindsey of Rockland; and two sisters, Emma Clark and Marion Beebe of Rockland.

He is survived by his daughter, Rose Armstrong and her husband Peter of Warren; his brother, Robert Lindsey of Waldoboro; his two grandchildren Clayburn Thayer and his wife Susan of Washington and Melissa Thayer of Searsmont; his three great-grandchildren David Thayer and Dustin Phillips of Searsmont and Brady Thayer of Washington; his step great-grandchildren, Zech and Logan Miabaum of Washington and Larry Thayer of Rockland; many nieces and nephews; his two brothers-in-law, Robert Watts and his wife Edna and Bentley Watts of Thomaston; and his two sisters-in-law Willimenna Watts and Annie Thorndike and her husband Donald of Thomaston.

A graveside service will be held at Friday, June 2 at 3 p.m. at the Village cemetery in Thomaston with the Reverend Wayne Sawyer Officiating.

Arrangements are with the Hall & Bibber Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Thomaston.

Louise Evelyn Black

SOUTH THOMASTON - Louise Evelyn Black, 72, died May 31, 2006 at the Chapel Road home of her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Tom Mackie.

Born in Rockland on July 12, 1933, she was the daughter of Peter J. and Evelyn F. Peters Eagan. Educated in local schools, she left high school to marry Frank Kulikowski and moved to his hometown, Pittsburgh, Penn.

While living in Pennsylvania, four of her children -- Cynthia, Frank Jr., Bonnie and Robert -- where born.

In 1962, she moved back to Rockland with her children and lived with her mother and younger sister, Maurine.

Before long she met Howard Anderson of Camden and the couple married in the fall of 1963. After living in an apartment in Rockland, they bought a house in Camden and added two more children to the family, Howard Jr. and Michelle. Their marriage lasted six years before Howard passed away in July of 1969.

On April 11, 1980 she married Harold Black of Tenants Harbor and moved into his house with Howard Jr. and Michelle. Harold was diagnosed with cancer and died on Nov. 13, 1996.

Louise then moved to Warren, living downstairs from her childhood friend, Carol Robinson. She took great comfort in attending the Second Congregational Church, becoming fond of Pastor Robin Honaker and the church members she met there.

A great cook and homemaker and a wonderful mother, Mrs. Black never let a birthday go by without a gift. She set a wonderful example of loving care and doing the right thing by everyone.

Besides her husbands, she was predeceased by her four brothers, Peter Eagan, Billy Eagan, Tommy Eagan and Bobby Eagan and her granddaughter, Melissa Kulikowski.

Mrs. Black is survived by her three daughters, Bonnie Mackie and her husband Thomas of South Thomaston, Cynthia Feener and her husband Bud of Warren, Michelle Ellis and her husband Francis of Thomaston; her three sons, Frank Kulikowski of Placida, Fla., Robert Kulikowski and his wife Martha of Swanville and Howard Anderson Jr. of Tenants Harbor; her two sisters, Katy Callahan and her husband Wess of Warren and Maurine Richardson and her husband Steve of South Thomaston; her brother, Eugene Eagan of Hawaii; her eight grandchildren, April Feener of Rockland, Ashley Ellis of Thomaston, Kyle Kulikowski of Placida, Fla., Scott Kulikowski of Swanville, Sam Kulikowski of Swanville, Billy Feener of South Thomaston, Chris Feener both of South Thomaston and Buddy Feener and his wife Heather of Warren; her four great-grandchildren, Deakon Stone of Rockland, Austin Stone of Rockland, William Feener of Belmont and Mason Feener of Belmont; her great-great-grandchild, Tristan Feener of Belmont; her two sisters-in-law, Pat Jordan of Camden and Charlene Black of Tenants Harbor; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

An hour of visiting will be held from 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 1st at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A celebration of Mrs. Black's life will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, at the Second Congregational Church, Main Street, Warren, with Reverend Robin Honaker officiating. Interment will follow at Ridge Cemetery, Martinsville.

Edward Roy Ray

FAIRFIELD, CT - Edward Roy Ray, 84, of Fairfield, Conn., died May 26, 2006 following an extended illness.

A journalist and writer for more than 40 years, Ray, a graduate of Yale University, began his career as a copy boy for the Hartford Courant in Hartford, Conn. at the age 15. He moved up to stories and reporting, leaving the Courant because of World War II, when he served in the Army Air Corps.

After his return, he went back to the Courant where he remained, working his way up to night city editor, until joining the staff of the New York Times Week in Review section in the mid-1960s. Ray was involved with New York journalism for more than 25 years, going from the Times to Business Week Magazine, where he became an associate editor.

He will be remembered for his great mind and wonderful sense of humor by his family, friends and associates.

Ray was predeceased by his brother, James MacLeod Ray of Hartford, Conn.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Davis Ray of Fairfield, Conn.; his two daughters, Susan Ray Jackson of Waldoboro and Elizabeth "Betsy" MacLeod Anderson of Union; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are with the Spears and Miller Funeral Home of Bridgeport, Conn.

Robert I. Heald Sr.

GARDINER - Robert I. Heald Sr., 67, of 163 Pleasant St., Gardner, Mass., died Friday, May 26, 2006, at home.

He leaves a son, Robert Heald Jr. of Gardner; a daughter, Robin Smith and her husband, Craig, of Gardner; three sisters, Stella Hemingway, Ella Nickerson and Evelyn Francis, all of Maine; five grandchildren, Bobby Heald III, Jake Heald, Trey Heald, Henry Vallincourt and Brandon Smith; two great grandchildren, Haley Vallincourt and Braeden Vallincourt; and his best friend, Esther Heald of Gardner.

Robert was an avid fisherman.

Funeral services will be private and there are no calling hours.

Poliks Funeral Home, 431 Pleasant St., Gardner, Mass, is directing arrangements.

Paul Giroux

ROCKPORT - Paul Giroux, 90, of Rockport and formerly of Winchester, Mass., died May 30, 2006.

He was a graduate of Boston College and worked many years at Giroux Brothers Milk Co. in Somerville, Mass. and later worked at Met Life in Cambridge. After his retirement, he spent summers in Rockport and wintered in Naples, Fla.

Paul, a man of refinement and integrity who loved baseball and history, will be sadly missed.

Paul is survived by his children, Andrea G. Saulnier of Rockport, Norman Giroux of Rockland, Diane G. Wonson of Islesboro and Laurence Giroux of Boxford, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be held Friday, June 2 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church in Camden. He will be buried in Winchester, Mass. beside his wife, Phyllis, and daughter, Paula.

Arrangements are with the Laite Funeral Home in Camden.

William S. Miller

SEARSPORT - William S. Miller, 79, died May 30, 2006, at Maine Veterans' Home, Bangor. He was born Nov. 9, 1926, in Bedford, N.H., son of the late William and Ora (Hamel) Miller.

A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army. William spent his life primarily in New Hampshire, where he worked in the heating field for many years, and he was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 8214, Manchester, N.H. He moved to Searsport in the early 1990s.

William is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Murray) Miller of Searsport; five children, Maureen Gamble and her husband, Harland, of Searsport, Carla Orestis of Searsport, Roxy Chasse and her husband, Michael, of Epsom, N.H., Daren Miller and his wife, Laurie, of Antrim, N.H., Stuart Miller and his wife, Lori, of Deering, N.H.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews.

He will be interred at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Services will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to the Maine Veterans' Home, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401.

Arrangements are by Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 31 West Main St., Searsport.

Richard A. Berry Sr.

SWANVILLE - Richard A. Berry Sr., 72, of Swanville, passed away at home Friday, June 2, 2006. He was born in Searsport on Feb. 15, 1934, the son of George and Pearle (Reynolds) Berry.

Richard was a brakeman on the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad, a truck driver for Maplewood Poultry and a mechanic. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Frank Berry and Robert Nickels. Richard is survived by his wife of 23 years, Lucretia (Littlefield) Berry of Swanville; his children, Richard A. Berry Jr. of Belfast, Randolph Berry of Belfast, Linda Drinkwater of Belfast, Daniel Berry of Belfast, David Berry of Belfast and Eric Berry of Swanville; a brother, George Berry of Searsport; two sisters, Charlene Cook of Belfast and Catherine Watson of Belfast; 11 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Services will be private under the care of Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.

Malcolm R. Benner, Sr.

DAMARISCOTTA - Malcolm R. Benner Sr., 74, died June 2 at Winship Green in Bath.

A native of Friendship, he was born at home, the son of Edward E. & Hazel B. (Teele) Benner on Dec. 12, 1931.

Following the death of his father at a very young age, Malcolm was raised by his grandparents and attended the school on Bremen Long Island. He entered the U.S. Army, serving honorably during the Korean War. Shortly after his discharge in 1952, he married his wife of 48 years, Georgia Ellis. She predeceased him in 2000.

For most of his working life, Malcolm was self-employed as a carpenter throughout the region. He was active in many organizations, including the Bristol, Lodge of Masons, The Waldoboro V.F.W. and the Wells-Hussey American Legion Post in Damariscotta. He was a charter member of the Route 66 Snowmobile Club.

Malcolm is survived by his loving children, Donna Leeman and husband Craig, Sarah Elwell and husband Jerry, Hazel Bowe and husband Mike, Terry Creamer and husband Gary and Malcolm Benner Jr and wife Bonnie; his three brothers, Clelle Genthner, Frank Genthner and Gordon Benner; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Malcolm was predeceased by his grandson, Timothy Leeman.

Friends are invited to be with the family Monday, June 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m., following visitation, at the New Harbor Cemetery. He will be laid to rest, with his wife and grandson, following.

Memorial donations may be made to the Bristol First Responders, 104 Southside Rd., New Harbor, ME 04554.

Arrangements are with the the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Damariscotta.

Sarah Mae Hawkins

LINCOLNVILLE CENTER - Sarah Mae Hawkins of Lincolnville Center, born Feb. 15, 1982, left this world May 29, 2006. All who knew and loved her deeply feel the loss of this beautiful, kind and creative woman. Her beauty was cut short at the age of 24, but her love, joy and beauty live on through her 2-year-old daughter, Tyler Jade.

Sarah is survived by her daughter, Tyler Jade; four brothers and two sisters, Nathan Hawkins, Reuben Sanchez, Forrest Sanchez, Brandon Larlee, Heather Dyer and Leah Sanchez. She also leaves behind her mother, Lynn Sanchez, grandparents, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Her life was short, but full. Sarah loved to fly and completed ground school in December 2005. She loved the freedom she felt while in the air. She worked as a foster mother in Santa Fe, N.M., where she fell in love with the open skies and beautiful sunsets. Sarah was an artist, a poet, a musician, an animal lover and a caring, kind and beautiful mother, daughter, sister and friend. She loved mountains, the forests and oceans of Maine, the deserts and skies of New Mexico, adventure and most of all, people.
