Hella Keravuori

UNION - Hella Keravuori, 95, of Union, died June 5, 2006 after a brief illness.

She was born in Rovaniemi, Finland and graduated from the nursing school in Viipuri, Finland in 1934. She served in various capacities as a surgical nurse, a frontline nurse during the Winter War and World War II and as a head nurse in various hospitals throughout Finland.

The family immigrated to the United States in 1948. Her husband was an officer in the U.S. Army and during his career the family traveled extensively; upon his retirement in 1968, they moved to Union.

The family truly appreciates Paula Szabo's devotion and care to Hella.

Hella was predeceased by her son, Juhani Keravuori, who died in 1975. Her husband Aito Keravuori predeceased her in 1998.

She is survived by her daughters, Tuula Jung and Outi Bonanni; her son, Jouni Keravuori of Virginia; her daughter-in-law, Martha Keravuori of Raleigh, N.C.; the spouses of her children; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held June 7 at the Hall Funeral Home in Waldoboro with the Rev. Wesley Woodman officiating.

Service of burial will be held in the Arlington National cemetery in Arlington, Virginia alongside her husband.

Memorial donations may be to Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice, c/o Northeast Health, 22 White St., Rockland, ME 04841.

Arrangements are with the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waldoboro.

Ralph C. Ward

ST. ALBANS - Ralph C. Ward, 90, a resident of Nokomis Road in St. Albans, died peacefully Sunday, June 4, 2006, at a Pittsfield hospital surrounded by his family. born in Troy on Oct. 6, 1915, he was a son of Fred and Ethel Hunt Ward.

Ralph graduated from Unity High School with the class of 1934. He was employed by Hood Dairy as a creamery worker in Unity for 12 years, and then in Newport for more than 20 years, where he retired in 1980.

Mr. Ward enjoyed bowling and playing cards all his life. He was a past member of the Star in the West Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 45 in Unity.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie, and a brother, Stanley Ward; two sons-in law, George Goodblood and Merton Spencer.

Ralph is survived by four children, two sons, Arnold Ward of New Jersey, and Reuel Ward of Skowhegan, and two daughters, Virginia Goodblood of St. Albans, and Gloria Spencer of Hancock; five grandchildren, Diane Chabot of Dexter, Douglas Ward of New Jersey, Heather Ward of Palmyra, and Paula and Damon Ward, both of Skowhegan; three step grandchildren, Peter Swanson, Dwayne and Kathie Goodblood; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Avis Farwell of Falmouth; several nieces and nephews; and two special friends, Barney and Mary Hall.

Visiting hours will be 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at the funeral home with Rev. Randy Hall officiating. Interment will follow at Village cemetery in Palmyra.

Arrangements are entrusted to Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield.

Barbara Phyllis Hawkes

LIBERTY - Barbara Phyllis Hawkes, 76, of Liberty, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. She was born April 9, 1930, in Naples, the daughter of Frank and May (Compton) Bartlett.

Barbara grew up in Naples and graduated from Deering High School in Portland. She lived in Portland and Scarborough before moving 37 years ago to Liberty. Barbara was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church and a volunteer with Liberty Fire and Ambulance, and she enjoyed helping to organize and cook for the benefit suppers. She liked gardening, sewing, yoga and spending time with her grandson and family.

Barbara owned an antique shop for a few years and worked for Liberty Graphics, and routinely played poker with her friends.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Howard Hawkes Sr.; a son, Howard Hawkes Jr.; a sister, Marjorie Deerborn; and brothers, Frank and Donald Bartlett.

Barbara is survived by her children, Cindy Hodgdon and husband, Gordon, of Montville, and Sandy Conder and husband, Terry, of Mesa, Ariz; a grandson, Chad Harriman of Belmont and his fiancée, Christina Johannes; three great-grandchildren, Cody, Emily and Jasmine; two sisters, Dorothy Stone of South Portland and Marion Erskine of Naples; a brother-in-law, Everett Hawkes; and several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Friends are invited to gather 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast. A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at Liberty Baptist Church, with Rev. Mark Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at noon at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta. There will be a gathering of family and friends at the Masonic Hall in Liberty after the cemetery services.

Those wishing to make memorial donations may do so to the Liberty Volunteer Fire and Ambulance, 84 West Main St., Liberty, ME 04949.

Constance M. Corson

BRISTOL - Constance M. Corson, 72, died early on the morning of June 5, 2006 at Cove's Edge in Damariscotta.

The daughter of Leonard P. and Florida M. (Richardson) Fitch, she was born Feb. 22, 1934 in Damariscotta. She attended Bristol schools and was a member of the graduating class of 1952 at Bristol High School.

On Oct. 22, 1955, she married Leol L. Corson. She lived nearly all of her life in Bristol.

Connie worked in various capacities, including Briggs Pharmacy in Damariscotta, Miles Memorial Hospital, the Bradley Inn, the Corner Stop and The Samoset Restaurant, and for 16 years she was a loyal helper and friend to Kate Ireland.

She was an avid reader and loved handwork of all types, including knitting, crocheting, quilting, rug hooking, cross-stitch and sewing. She also loved her gardens. A Sunday school teacher for 22 years in New Harbor and Bristol Mills, she was also a member of the Bristol Mills Congregational Church, as well as being active at the Bristol School, when her boys were in their youth. Connie loved to travel to the White Birches, in New Hampshire, but her favorite spot was the family camp in Lincoln, Maine.

A devoted mother and wife, she is survived by her husband, Leol of Bristol; her five sons, Leonard Paul Corson and wife Elaine of Orem, Utah, Jayson Leol Corson and wife Kerstin of Howland, Joseph Fitch Corson and wife Elizabeth of Bristol, Matthew Lee Corson and wife Michele of Pemaquid and John Aaron Corson of Bristol; her mother, Florida Mae Fitch of Bristol; nine grandchildren; one great grandson; and one step-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by her father in 1981.

Friends are invited to be with the family Friday, June 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Strong Funeral Home at 612 Main St. in Damariscotta.

A graveside service to honor Connie will be held Saturday, June 10 at 11 a.m. at the West Bristol cemetery in Walpole.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Damariscotta.

Mildred B. Wotton

NOBLEBORO - Mildred B. Wotton, 90, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro.

Mildred grew up in Union and at the age of 15 left home to go to Newtonville, Mass. as a mother's helper. She graduated from Newton High School in the class of 1933. She graduated from Wheelock College in Boston in 1936.

She was a teacher at Warren Highlands for one term. She taught in Augusta for four years and also in Union. She taught for a total of 20 years. She married John W. Burns and had to quit teaching because no married woman was allowed to teach. She was a member of the Maine Retired Teachers Association.

She lived in Union for 38 years with her husband John, who died in 1978. She married Sherman Wotton and lived in Friendship for 25 years. Sherman Wotton died in 2004.

She enjoyed knitting. She was a Girl Scout Leader for many years. She was also a Grange leader for many years.

She is survived by her two sisters, Sylvia Keene and her husband Weston of Nobleboro and Harriet Carroll and her husband David of Union; her step-daughters, Margaret Gagnon of Friendship and Mary Ellen Sweeney of Amesbury, Mass.; five step-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, June 11 at 2 p.m. at the Nobleboro Baptist Church. Pastor Robert Wyand will officiate. Burial will follow in the Union Common cemetery in Union.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Friendship Museum, 44 Bradford Point Rd., Friendship, ME 04547.

Arrangements are with the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waldoboro.

Charles H. Miller

APPLETON - Charles "Chuck" Harvey Miller, 55, of Appleton, died unexpectedly Monday, June 5, 2006 in Camden as the result of an automobile accident.

Miraculously, his beloved yellow Labrador retriever, Shadow, survived the accident.

Born in Bridgeport, Conn., he was the son of Charles R. and Nanna G. (Taylor) Miller. He grew up in Fairfield, Conn. and served two tours in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era.

Miller lived in the Catskill Mountains of New York for many years and enjoyed spending summers on Hobbs Pond in Hope. Several years ago, he moved to Appleton and worked as a self-employed carpenter. His family said he had a life-long passion for building tree houses and had just completed the first floor of one to live in on his Appleton property.

A vegetarian, he enjoyed planting and harvesting a large garden every year and giving away flowers and vegetables he had grown.

He is survived by his daughter, Courtney Miller of Haines Falls, N.Y.; his stepson, Jason Higgins of Haines Falls, N.Y.; his five siblings, Jane Eddy of Middlebury, Vt., Mary Little of Fairfield, Conn. and Hope, Elizabeth "Becky" Steinbach of Bridgeport, Conn., William T. Miller of Jewett, N.Y. and Barbara Mason of Fairfield, Conn. and Hope; his former wife, Debra Miller of Haines Falls, N.Y.; one uncle; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents.

A memorial service was held June 8 at the Hope Community Bible Church with Pastor Mark Stockwell officiating.

Richard C. Dublis

SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Richard C. Dublis, 68, died Monday, June 5, 2006 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Aug. 28, 1938, he was the son of Vito J. and Genevieve R. Tallaksen Dublis. Educated in New York schools, he was a graduate of Concordia High School. Following graduation Richard attended Concordia Theological Seminary.

While living in New York, Richard was employed for a brief time with General Electric and later with Lear Siglear, a company that manufactured the machines that made dental plates.

On Sept. 13, 1959, Richard married Janet C. Baker in Brooklyn, N.Y. The couple made their home in Queens, N.Y.

The couple later moved to Rockport where Richard was employed for more than 20 years with Radio Shack in Rockland.

During what some would call semi-retirement, Richard and his wife moved to Southwest Harbor. Here they purchased and ran the DoubleJ Deli for more than 15 years.

Richard was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. His family remembers he enjoyed owning a boat and dabbling in the stock market. His greatest joy was spending time with his only granddaughter. It was said that Richard's life revolved around her.

Besides his wife Janet of Southwest Harbor, Richard is survived by his two sons, Wayne Dublis and his wife Sonia of Deltona, Fla. and Scott Dublis of Southwest Harbor; his granddaughter, Madeline Rose Dublis of Deltona, Fla.; and several aunts, cousins and friends.

A celebration of his life will be held Friday, June 9 at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Lutheran Church at 175 Down East Highway in Ellsworth. The Reverend Bruce Meyer will officiate. Interment will follow at Seaview cemetery in Rockport.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph's Healthcare, Development Office, P.O. Box 1638, Bangor, ME 04402.

Arrangements are with the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home in Rockland.

Constance Loraine Mink

FRIENDSHIP - Constance Loraine Mink, 69, died June 5, 2006 at Shore Village Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Rockland after a brief illness.

Constance, known affectionately as Connie, was born in Appleton on Nov. 5, 1936, the youngest of five children to the late Ivan and Irene Johnson Mink.

As a child she attended Appleton and Union schools and assisted on the family farm. Connie was later employed at GTE Sylvania in Waldoboro for 17 years and resided in Friendship throughout her adult life.

Connie is survived by her two sons, Ronald Yattaw of Friendship and Keith Yattaw and his wife Michelle of Orlando, Fla.; her two grandchildren, Eric Yattaw of Waldoboro and Matthew Yattaw of Cushing; her two brothers and their wives, Keith and Grace Mink of Appleton and Lyndon and Marion Mink of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; her sister, Lyndall Wade of Portland; and her cousins, nieces, nephews and friends who were very thoughtful and supportive during her illness.

A graveside ceremony at the Village cemetery behind the Friendship Methodist Church will be held Thursday, June 15 at 1 p.m., followed by a celebration of her life at the Mink home in Friendship.

Memorial donations be made to the Friendship Ambulance Auxiliary Foundation, P.O. Box 40, Friendship, ME 04547.

Arrangements are with the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waldoboro.
