Leta K. Sanborn

ROCKLAND - Leta K. Sanborn, 73, died at her home June 7, 2006 surrounded by her family after an extended illness.

Born in Winter Harbor on Oct. 25, 1932, she was the daughter of Walter and Jessie Young Bickford. She was educated in Winter Harbor schools.

In 1948, she married Francis E. Ott in Winter Harbor. The couple later moved to Rockland. After her marriage to Bert H. Dearborn, she lived from the mid 1950s to 1960s in Thomaston. Since that time she resided in Rockland.

Leta was a devoted mother and often said one of her greatest joys was raising her six children.

For 23 years she worked in housekeeping, first at the former Knox General Hospital. She retired from Penobscot Bay Medical Center in 1994.

She enjoyed family gatherings, spending time with her grandchildren, doing crossword and jig-saw puzzles and sitting on her porch.

She was predeceased by her son, Glen Dearborn in 1986 and by her brother, Vincent Bickford.

She is survived by her three sons, Edward A. Ott and his companion Suzan Ludwick of Warren, Alan W. Dearborn and his wife Penny and Dean W. Dearborn and his wife Audry, of all of Rockland; her two daughters, Brenda Rios and her husband Fred of Willimantic, Conn. and Sonia Robbins of Bangor; her brother, Neil Bickford and his wife Ruth of Jewett City, Conn.; her two sisters, Clarene Bidell of Grand Island, N.Y. and Janice Lebel of Sabattus; fourteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Friday, June 16 at 10 a.m. at Achorn cemetery in Rockland. The Reverend Bartram Dilks will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Maine Children's Cancer Program, 100 U.S. Route 1, Unit 107, Scarborough, ME 04075.

Arrangements are with the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home in Rockland.

Philip Egan Butler

OWLS HEAD - Philip Egan Butler, 71, of Owls Head, died at home under the care of his wife, Carol, on June 6, 2006 after a long struggle with melanoma.

Born Dec. 26, 1934 in Flushing, N.Y., he was raised on Long Island and in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He was a graduate of Huntington High School, where he was a standout on the football, baseball and wrestling teams. His fascination with history led him to pursue three years of undergraduate study in the subject at C.W. Post College.

Phil served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957 in intelligence and spent most of his working years with the U.S. Postal Service in East Northport, N.Y. He and his wife, Carol, moved to Owls Head in 1990 after he retired. While living in Maine, he did volunteer work for the Georges River Tidewater Association, the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School and the Humane Society of Knox County animal shelter.

Despite raising his children in the suburbs of Long Island, he instilled in them enthusiasm for the outdoors and a love of the natural world that they still carry. (The family's connection with the outdoors is why they all ended up living in Maine.) Their small home and yard always contained pets, some of them unusual considering where they lived, including chickens, raccoons, a rabbit and a piglet (not all at the same time). A snapping turtle once spent the night.

Phil is survived by his wife, Carol of Owls Head; his daughter, Gretchen Hardy and her husband Ben of Portland; his son, Jim Butler and his wife Michele and their children, Hope and Daniel of Rockland; his brother, Jeffrey; and his sisters, Diana and Connie.

He was predeceased by his youngest brother, John.

Memorial donations may be made to Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice, 170 Pleasant St., Rockland, ME 04841 or to The Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. Fairfax Dr., Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203.

No services will be held, but Phil's family encourages family and friends to join them at a celebration of his life on Friday, June 23 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the home of Jim and Michele Butler at 249 Bog Rd. in Rockland.
