Clifford C. Wade
1999-06-10

DIXFIELD - Clifford C. Wade, 72, died Sunday, May 30, at his residence on the Averill Road in Dixfield.

A lifelong resident of the area, he was born in Lewiston on April 26, 1927, the son of Chester and Hazel (Maxim) Wade, and was a graduate of Stephens High School in Rumford, Class of 1945.

He was employed as an electrician at Boise Cascade Paper Company in Rumford for over 40 years until his retirement in 1989.

During the Korean War he served with the U.S. Coast Guard and later with the U.S. Navy where he served aboard the USS New Jersey.

Mr. Wade was a member of the Boise Cascade Paper Co. 25 and 40 Year Club and the American Legion Post #178, Waterville.

He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

He was married in Rumford on June 20, 1949, to Cora Petrie, who survives of Dixfield.

Other survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Al (Brenda) McCarthy of Weld, Mrs. Michael (Cynthia) Woodard of Jacksonville, FL, Mrs. Carl (Marion) Porter of Dixfield, and Mrs. Daniel (Lynn) Smith of Statesboro, GA; three sons and daughters-in-law, Neil and Margaret Wade, Lee and Audrey Wade of Weld, and Douglas and Donna Wade of Rumford; a brother, Jerald Wade, and his wife, Elaine, of Bangor; two sisters, Priscilla Petrie, of Strong and Mrs. William (Patricia) Guy of South Paris; 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Saturday, June 5 at St. John Cemetery, Rumford, with Fr. Joseph Lange officiating.

Those who desire, please contribute to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011 in his memory.

Arrangements were under the care of Meader & Son Funeral Home, Rumford.

Donald R. Wotton
2003-10-30

Donald R. Wotton, 72, died Friday, October 24 at St. Andrews Hospital surrounded by his family.

Born February 3, 1931 in Boothbay Harbor he was the son of Raymond and Bernice Sargent Wotton. He attended local schools. On April 4, 1953 he married Elizabeth (Betty) Adams.

Mr. Wotton was active in community service and for over 50 years worked locally in the fisheries industry.

Prior to his career in the fisheries industry, he worked at Bath Iron Works. For seven years he was manager of the Boothbay Region Lobstermen's Co-op, and worked at Boothbay Region Fish and Cold Storage before opening "Wottons Lobster" with his wife in 1983. They ran the business until their retirement in 2002.

In 1974 he co-founded two businesses; the Maine Association of Co-ops (MAC) and the Maine Fishermen's Credit Union -- now part of Midcoast Credit Union.

From 1978 to 1990 he was a member of the Boothbay Harbor Selectmen, and on the Board of Directors at the Boothbay Harbor Chamber of Commerce from 1990 - 1993. From 1984 - 1991 he was a member of the Marine Reserve Advisory Committee in Augusta. A 30-year member of the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club, he held positions of treasurer and president. In 2001 he was awarded the 29th Rotary Club Lifetime Service Award. At the same ceremony he was also presented with the "Measure Up Award" from Bob Brown, President of the Maine Lobster Dealers Association for "those in the industry who are a cut above everyone else." In 2001 he was also chosen as the Grand Marshal for Windjammer Days. He was a Navy veteran.

Mr. Wotton's favorite community service activity was helping St. Andrews Hospital, where he was on the Board of Directors beginning in 1993. In 1995 he and his wife became the first couple to co-chair the hospital's Annual Fund Drive. When his term expired he continued on the Buildings and Grounds Committee.

Aside from community service he enjoyed his annual bird hunting trips in the fall with his son-in-law, Leigh and friend Bruce Tindal, visiting "Eddie and the boys" at the Atlantic Edge Lobster, walking the track at the local YMCA and spending time with his family.

He is predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Betty Wotton, who died this past July.

Survivors include his daughter, Vicki and her husband Leigh Reinecke of Boothbay Harbor; grandchildren, Adam Reinecke of Boothbay Harbor, Regan Reed of Concord, N.H., Lindsay Baker and her husband Todd of Plaistow, N.H.; great-grandson, Riley Baker of Plaistow, N.H.; brother, Wesley Wotton of Roxbury; sister, Phyllis Wotton of Oxford; sister-in-law, Barbara Lewis and her husband Duane of Phillips.

At Mr. Wotton's request there will be no funeral. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

There will be a boat parade in his memory on Sunday, November 2. Commercial fishing vessels are asked to rendezvous off Tumbler Island around 3 p.m. and line up in order to pass by the former Wotton Lobster Dock at 4 p.m., then proceed to the inner harbor. The boats will stand by on channel 10. The flag at the Fishermen's Memorial will fly at half-staff through Sunday.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Andrews Hospital, P.O. Box 417, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538 or to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 280, Boothbay, ME 04537.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Aina Miriam Syrjala Winchenbach
2000-12-07

Aina Miriam Syrjala Winchenbach, 80, Waldoboro, passed away Mon., Dec. 4, at Pen Bay Medical Center after a brief illness.

Aina was born March 10, 1920 in Friendship, the daughter of Samuel Victor Syrjala and Ilmi Johanna Ellison Syrjala Hill.

She graduated from Thomaston High School in 1938.

Together, Aina and her husband Robert owned and operated Wink’s Bottle Shop and sold Christmas trees.

Aina was an ambulance attendant for the Waldoboro Ambulance; she worked as the head cook at Medomak Valley High School and was a Sunday School Teacher.

She was a Girl Scout leader, a member of several antique bottle clubs, the Maine Christmas-Tree Association, Lend-a-Hand club, the senior citizens club, Treasurer of the Shuman cemetery Association, Director and Charter Member of the Finnish-American Club of Midcoast Maine and the Waldoboro Methodist Church.

On July 28, 1940 she married Robert Chester Winchenbach. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this summer with a large family reunion (Syrjala/Winchenbach).

She is predeceased by four brothers.

She is survived by her husband Robert of Waldoboro, sons, Kenneth E. Winchenbach and Sally D. of Exeter, N.H., Ronald E. Winchenbach and Deborah A. of Upper Enchanted Township, daughters, Barbara A. Linscott and husband, Mahlon of Washington, Dale E. Tolman of Waldoboro; grandchildren: Karl and Kenneth Winchenbach, Sara Raynes, Shari Whelan, David Linscott and Gregory and Rebecca Tolman; great grandchildren: April and James Raynes and Kendra Winchenbach; sisters, Sara Clough of Rockland, several nieces, nephews and cousins in Finland.

The Rev. Terence Willis will officiate. Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Dec. 6 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.

Funeral service 10 a.m., Dec. 7, at Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Arrangements are under the directions of Hall Funeral Home.

Joseph G. Walker
1998-08-13

PORTLAND Joseph G. Walker, 83, of Norway died Thursday August 6, 1998 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born at Oxford on July 20, 1915, the son of Arthur and Annie Mayberry Walker. He was educated in Oxford schools.

After school Mr. Walker had worked for the woolen mill in Oxford, worked as a welder at the shipyard in Portland prior to the war then he joined the United States Marines Corp. where he earned five battle stars. After the war he returned home and purchased the IGA store at Norway Lake which he operated as Walkers IGA for many years.

Mr. Walker was a member of the V. F.W., Marine Corp. League, he served three terms in the 113th Legislature House of Representatives. He served as golf pro for many years at the Norway Country Club. He had lived in Norway all his life. He married the former Dorothy Korn on November 2, 1940.

He is survived by his wife of Norway; two sons, Robert Walker of Norway, and John of Johnson City, TN; four grandchildren, Tricia, Melissa, Jennabeth, and Lexi Jo, one great grandson, Devin. He was predeceased by a daughter, Janice, in 1954.

Memorial services were held Monday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home in Norway. Military services were conducted by the Marine Corp. League. Interment was be in the Norway Pine Grove cemetery in South Paris. In lieu of flowers donations in Mr. Walker's memory may be sent to the Student Government fund University of Maine in Farmington.

Hoyt Dinsmore Warner
1998-09-17

Hoyt D. Warner, Ph.D., 59 of Wethersfield, Conn., husband of Patricia (Mullen) Warner, died Thurs., Sept. 10 at Hartford Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Charleston, WV, he was the son of the late H. Landon Warner, Jr. and Charlotte (Collins) Warner and grew up in Ohio.

Hoyt, know to family and friends as "Dins", spent summers in South Bristol, Maine. He loved sailing.

He was a professor of computer and informational science at Western new England College in Springfield, Mass. He graduated cum laude from Harvard University in 1959, received his master's degree from Yale University in 1962 and earned his doctorate from the University of Oregon in 1968.

In 1984 Professor Warner joined the faculty of Western New England College as associate professor of computer science. He assumed the leadership of a newly created undergraduate computer science degree programs and continued in this role at the present.

He was a member of the Association for Computing Machinery, and Mathematical Association of America and the IEEE Computer Society. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church Choir.

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Julie F. Warner and Catherine M. Warner both of New York City; a son, Brian D. Warner of Wethersfield; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles C. and Elizabeth Warner of Worthington, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.

A mass in celebration of his life was held Sat. Sept. 12 in Sacred Heart Church, Wethersfield. Burial was in Village Cemetery, Wethersfield. Arrangements were by D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, Wethersfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Professor Hoyt D. Warner Computer Science Excellence Award c/o Western New England College, 1215 Wilbraham Rd., Springfield, Mass., 01119-2684.

Fred M. Warren, Jr.
1998-05-07

BUCKFIELD - Fred M. Warren, Jr., 50, of the East Buckfield Road, Buckfield, died early Sunday morning, May 3, 1998, as a result of an automobile accident.

Mr. Warren was born in Buckfield, June 15, 1947, the son of the late Fred M. and Verlie (Rowe) Warren, and he attended Buckfield schools. A self-employed logger, he had been associated with A.C. Lawrence, of South Paris, until its closing, for a number of years. Mr. Warren was the self-proclaimed `Mayor of Buckfield,' a horseman, and a veteran of the Vietnam conflict. He served in the U.S. Army, with Headquarters and Headquarters Co., of the 26th Engineering Battalion (American Division,) attaining the rank of SP/4, and receiving the Army Commendation Medal.

In 1972, he married the former Maureen Heikkinen, and they were divorced in 1989. He was a member of the Buckfield Community Church, being baptized in the church on April 15, 1962, and held membership in the Buckfield Grange.

Mr. Warren is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Pushee, of Bradford, VT; nine sisters, Esther and Beryl Robinson, of Auburn, Christine Hinkley, of Turner, Helen Hadley, of West Sumner, Geraldine Jewell Pauline Jones, and Shirley Smith of Buckfield, Kathleen Additon, of Leeds, and Jacqueline Meggison of Gorham; and three brothers, Walter, Roland, and Leon Warren, all of Buckfield. He was pre-deceased by a sister, Geneva Hood, of Turner.

Funeral services were held at the Buckfield Community Church on Wednesday morning. Interment was in the Buckfield/Damon Cemetery, Buckfield. Friends who wish may make donations to Buckfield Rescue, P.O. Box 99, Buckfield, ME 04220.

Fred M. Warren, Jr.
1998-05-14

BUCKFIELD - Funeral services for Fred M. Warren, Jr., 50, of the East Buckfield Road, Buckfield were held Wednesday morning, May 6, at the Buckfield Community Church with the Rev. Eva Thompson officiating. Interment was in the Buckfield/Damon Cemetery. Bud Abbott, Roland Warren, Randy Jones, Leon Warren, Walter Warren and Dan Watkins served as bearers.

Floris Warren
1999-05-13

WATERVILLE - Floris Warren, 87, a Main Street resident in Waterville, died Friday, April 30, 1999 in I land Hospital in Waterville.

She was born on June 12, 1911, in Norway, the daughter of the late Frank and Alozia (Morrisette) Witham, attended Norway schools and two years of business college.

She was married for many years to her beloved husband, Ralph Warren.

Mrs. Warren enjoyed gardening, knitting and making quilts. She especially enjoyed time spent with her family.

She was a secretary for Young's Furniture Co. in Portland.

She was predeceased by her husband, and a brother, Leland Witham.

Survivors include her sons, Willard Lapham of South Paris and Barrie Lapham of Waterville; a brother, Oscar Witham of Georgia; three grandchildren, Buddy Joe Lapham and Penny Merrill of South Paris and Kimberly Smith of Waterville; four great-grandchil-dren, Michael Lapham of Otisfteld, Tova Merrill and Kara Merrill of South Paris and Zachary Smith of Waterville.

There was a service at 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 7, at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn.

Donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St,, Brunswick ME 04011.

Arrangements were by Pine State Cremation Service in Greenville.

James D. Watson
1999-08-12

James D. Watson, 79, Boothbay Harbor, died Aug. 6.

He was born in Kankakee, Ill., the son of William and Madge Watson.

Watson served 30 years in the U.S. Navy, including 20 years in the submarine service, entering the Navy as an enlisted man and retiring in 1971 as a lieutenant. He was a member and past president of the Squalus Chapter of WWII submarine veterans in Portsmouth. N.H.

He was past president of the Boothbay Fish and Game Association and was for 18 years a hunter safety instructor. He was an expert hunter, an active member of the National Rifle Association, and the Sportsmen's Alliance of Maine.

His honesty was well known in Boothbay, where he was president of the Boothbay Chamber of Commerce for 14 years, a selectman, and founder of St. Columba's Episcopal Church where he was senior warden for 13 years. He was chairman of the Boothbay Parks and Recreation, chaplain of Bay View Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Food Pantry of Boothbay Harbor.

Watson was also a talented woodworker who opened a small furniture shop and restored antiques.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Janet Tatham Watson, and his son Jerome Watson, both of Boothbay; three daughters, Judith Thelan of West Salem, Wis., Janalee Macht, of Wisconsin, and Jill Reynolds and her husband Larry of Boothbay; two brothers, William Jr. of New York and Donald of Illinois; two sisters, Anne Montgomery and Jane Coddington, both of Oregon; a former daughter-in-law, six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Sun., Aug. 15 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Boothbay Harbor. Margaret Russell, Vicar of St. Columba's Episcopal Church, will officiate. A graveside service will be held Tues., Aug. 17 at 10 a.m. at Oceanview Cemetery, Boothbay. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Mary Jane Webb
1998-09-24

Mary Jane Webb, 83, a longtime resident of Edgecomb, died Sept. 17 at her home.

She was born in Stamford, Conn., a daughter of Alexander and Mary Margaret Muewell, and raised in Mountain Lakes, NJ. Mrs. Webb was a graduate of Mountain Lakes High School and Pace Institute in New York City.

She and her husband, Arthur C. Webb, moved to Edgecomb in 1935.

She was employed for many years as a secretary in the Union 49 school system in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Webb was a member of the Edgecomb Congregational Church and choir, Ladies' Aid, and the Knox-Lincoln Extension. She enjoyed gardening, a variety of craft work, reading and spending time with her family and friends.

Her husband died previously.

Surviving are three daughters, Mary Jane Hughes of Bullhead, Ariz., Constance Machon of Charleston, S.C., and Boothbay Harbor, and Sharon Barter of Edgecomb, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours were held Sept. 21 at Simmons and Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor. A funeral was held Sept. 22 at the Edgecomb Congregational Church, the Rev. Steven E. Burt officiated. Burial followed in the North Edgecomb Cemetery.
