Merle D. Weeman
1999-05-06

SEBAGO - Merle D. Weeman, 82, died Saturday May l, 1999 at the Maine Veterans' Home in South Paris.

He was born in South Bridgton on September 13, 1916, the son of Elmer and Lena Chaplin Weeman.

He attended schools in Bridgton and Portland and graduated from Portland High School in the class of 1935.

He served with the United States Navy during WWII on the U.S.S. Block Island.

Mr. Weeman owned and operated the Shell Station at Pondicherry Square for many years. He also worked as the superintendent of the Bridgton Water Commisssion for 18 years. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and storyteller.

Mr. Weeman is survived by his wife of 58 years the former Barbara Hilton of Sebago whom he married on February 15, 1941. He is also survived by his four children, Linda Whitney, Jean Simoneau, and Robert Weeman who live locally and Anne Crisafulli who lives in Massachusetts; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, May 9, at 11 a.m. at the South Bridgton cemetery on Adams Pond.

Arrangements are by the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, Bridgton. In lieu of flowers please make contributions in Mr. Weeman's memory to the Maine Veteran's Home 477 High St., South Paris ME 04281.

John H. West
1999-03-04

John Henry West, 26, of Wiscasset, died Tuesday, February 23 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Route 1 in Woolwich.

Born in Mt. Kisco, New York on November 28, 1972, he was the son of F. Henry and Saima S. (Harkonen) West.

In 1990 he graduated from John J. High School in Lewisboro, N.Y. He received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y. Mr. West worked as a mechanical engineer for Silicon Valley Group in Wilton, Conn. where he built robots which made microcomputer chips. During his summer college vacations he helped his father build a new house in Wiscasset. A week ago he moved to Wiscasset to live with his parents.

He enjoyed music, restoring old cars, was an avid outdoorsman, and was extremely handy at many things.

Survivors include his parents, F. Henry and Saima S. West of Wiscasset, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A funeral service was held Saturday, February 27 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset with the Rev. Peg. Grzelkowski officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, P.O. Box 350, Wiscasset, ME 04578.

Amber Nicole Westman
1999-05-26

Amber Nicole Westman, 9, of Durant Road in Berwick passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, May 23, after a long illness.

She was born Aug. 30, 1989, in Sanford, Me., the daughter of Craig and Karen Green Westman. She had been attending the third grade at the Vivian Hussey School in Berwick.

Amber loved swimming and baking, doing crafts and working and playing on her computer. Amber loved attending Sunday School and church at the Bethel Christian Church of North Berwick. She enjoyed collecting Beanie Babies. Amber especially loved to make people happy. She touched many lives with her kind, gentle and loving spirit.

Amber is survived by her mother and stepfather, Karen Green Dube and James Dube, Jr. of Berwick; father and stepmother, Craig and Susan Westman of York; grandparents Larry and Joyce Westman of Kittery, Ronald and Judy Westman of Garland, Me., and Robert and Sandy Green of Jefferson, Me.; a sister, Shelby Westman of Berwick and a stepsister, Caitlin Kelly of York.

Visiting hours were held May 25 at the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. A funeral is being held today, Wednesday, May 26, at 1pm at the Bethel Christian Church in North Berwick with Reverend Robert G. Cole, Sr. officiating. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, South Berwick.

Gerald E. Wheeler
1998-11-19

Gerald E. Wheeler, 91, died Tuesday, November 17 at his home on Corey Lane in Boothbay.

Born March 7, 1907 in Greene, he was the son of Fred and Florence Rose Wheeler.

Mr. Wheeler attended schools in Litchfield and in his earlier years he held various jobs on farms and shoe shops. He was a barber in Boothbay Harbor for 32 years. Mr. Wheeler was superintendent/outside foreman of the Boothbay Harbor Water System, a selectman in Boothbay Harbor, and Water Commissioner. He owned and operated Gerry's used furniture enterprise.

He was a lifetime member of Seaside Masonic Lodge #144, a lifetime member of the Knights of Pythias and a past chancellor commander and past district governor. He was a 75-year member of Seaside Grange #171.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Evelyn of Boothbay; two daughters, Nancy and her husband Dwight Paine of Waldoboro and Rachael Van Lehn of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; one son, Robert Lowe of Southport, Florida; one sister, Verna Wheeler Coady of Greene; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

An hour of visitation will be held Friday, November 20 from noon to 1 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. Franklyn Lenthall and Alfred Roberts will officiate. A Masonic Service will be held at the graveside. Interment will be in the Oceanview cemetery in Boothbay.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, 11 Howard Street, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall of Boothbay.

Robert L. White
1998-03-05

LEWISTON Robert L. White, 66, of High Street, Buckfield, died Sunday morning, March 1 at St. Mary's Medical Center.

Mr. White was born in Buckfield the son of the late Lloyd and Marion (Thurlow) White, attended schools there, graduating from Buckfield High School in 1949, and was a life-long member of that community. A millwright by vocation, he had been associated with Boise Cascade, Rumford, for over 30 years, until his retirement in 1993.

Mr. White joined the U.S. Navy in 1951, where he became an Aviation Machinist Mate third class.

In 1955, he married the former Irene Lucas, who pre-deceased him in 1991.

Mr. White's passion was hunting. He spent many days at his camp in Greenville, and also enjoyed big game hunting in Montana, where he pursued elk, big horn sheep, and antelope. He held membership in the John D. Long Post #58, American Legion, of Buckfield, and was a member of MOAL, (an antique auto association).

He is survived by three daughters, Laurie W. Peer, of Buckfield, Susan W. Jack, of Cooke City, Montana, and Nancy W. Newton, also of Buckfield; a son, Weston H. White, of Rumford; five grandchildren and a special companion, Gloria Berry. Mr. White was pre-deceased by a brother Lawrence White.

Friends may call at the Andrews Funeral Home, High St., Buckfield, Thursday evening, March 5, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Friday with Interment in the Buckfield/Damon Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial donations in Mr. White's memory to: John D. Long Post #58, Buckfield, ME 04220.

Minnie M. Guptil White
1999-06-10

NORWAY - Mrs. Minnie M. Guptil White, 86, of Norway died Sunday, May 23, at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway after a short illness.

She was born on February 19, 1913, and graduated from Bridgton Academy, Class of 1932.

She was predeceased by her husband Alton L. White, December 19, 1987, to whom she was married for 53 years. In 1954, she and her husband established White's Marina in Norway on Lake Pennesseewassee. Other ventures included owning and operating a turkey farm and a mobile home park.

Also, a very special interest of Mrs. White's was her raising, breeding, and showing of her beloved Brittany Spaniels. Her most recent beloved companion is her 11-year old poodle, Fi Fi.

Mrs. White was an avid sportswoman, and she enjoyed hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling.

She has spent the past several winters in Homosassa Springs, FL. She kept up her interest in various assortments of collectibles and antiques.

Mrs. White was a long time member of the local Rebeckah Lodge.

She had many, many friends in Maine as well as Florida. She will be missed.

She is survived by a nephew, Larry White of Norway; several grandnieces and nephews, and cousins.

There was a graveside service celebrating the life of Minnie White at the Hillside cemetery in Stoneham on May 26.

Lewis A. Whitney
1998-07-02

Lewis A. Whitney, 81, of Manchester, died Sunday, June 28 at Maine General Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Gray Birch after a brief illness.

Born in Parkman on January 31, 1917, he was the son of Roy and Elsie (Currier) Whitney. He was a graduate of Brewer High School and attended the University of Maine at Orono. He had been employed by Burnham and Morrill Company of Portland and had worked as chief steam engineer at Hudson Pulp and Paper Company for many years.

Mr. Whitney was a member of Dunn's Corner Baptist Church, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Cobbsecontee Grange, Androscoggin Pomona, Kennebec Pomona, Queen of Esther Order of the Eastern Star of Hallowell, a 50year member of the Masons and a member of Augusta Masonic Lodge #141, and a faithful member of the Hallowell Band.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Florice (Bennett) Whitney, in 1983.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie (Small) Whitney of Manchester; a son, Roger A. Whitney of Alna; a daughter, Laureleen Damon of Elliottsville; a sister, Dorothy Bridges of Escondido, Calif.; a half-brother, Harold Whitney of Ashland; a half-sister, Althea Thompson of Limington; five grandchildren, John, Candace and Jennifer Damon, Laura and Raymond Whitney; a greatgrandson, Stephen James Damon; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 31 at Plummer Funeral Home in Augusta with the Rev. John Dunn Sr., Pastor of Dunn's Corner Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed at the family lot in Abbott Village Cemetery, Abbott.

At the family's request, those who desire may make donations in his memory to the Hallowell Band, c/o Arnold Barrett, P.O. Box 403, East Winthrop, Maine 04343.

Sarah F. Whitney
1999-06-03

HARRISON - Sarah F. Whitney, 71, died Friday, May 28, 1999, at Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness.

She was born in Passaic, New Jersey, on October 30, 1927, the daughter of Norman and Louise Sullender Shapiro.

She graduated from nurses training as a member of the cadet Nurse Corps during WWII. Later she got a Master's of Science in Nursing, majoring in maternal and child health, nurse midwifery and clinical teaching. She held many supervisory positions and taught nursing in health care agencies but primarily in several university settings.

She was a member of the MENSA club, Who's Who in American Nursing, and Sigma Theta Tau National honor society of Nursing. Mrs. Whitney was very active in Harrison community affairs, served on the Planning Board, Democratic Town Committee, Scholarship Committee, Historical Society, Western Maine Counseling Board, Rotary Club worked on blood drives and on the Ladies Circle of the Calvary Church. She wrote for the Bridgton News for five years, was on the Caswell Public Library Board and was currently working on the Library Building Drive. She was a volunteer at the Harrison Elementary School.

Along with her late husband Freeman Whitney, whom she married in 1974, she was a prime mover in the building of the Harrison Fire Station, and the development of the Hill Pond Park.

In her early years she was a nun for 16 years in the order of the Sisters of Charity in Nazareth Kentucky.

She is survived by a sister, Juanita Thorne, of Ocala Florida; two brothers, Norman Shapiro of Belleview, Florida and Walter Shapiro of Farmville VA; five step-children, Anne Whitney, of Homer, Alaska, Elizabeth Gallager of Bryant Pond, Jonathan Whitney of Portland, Andrew Whitney of Jakarta, Indonesia, and Jane Riseman of Harrison; 15 step-grandchildren and four step- great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Freeman Whitney and a sister, Barbara Payne of Raleigh, NC.

She loved life, loved people and always tried to make things better. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, Bridgton.

Carla N. Whittemore
1998-04-16

NORWAY - Carla N. Whittemore, 69, of Oxford died Tuesday April 7, 1998 at the Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway. She was born at Norway on October 21, 1928, the daughter of Clyde and Ida Pauquette McKay.

She was educated in Norway schools. She had worked in local shoe shops and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. She has lived in the Oxford-Norway area all her life. She married Donald Whittemore on January 5, 1946.

She is survived by her husband of Oxford; one daughter, Carmen Whittemore Bonney and Dana of Oxford; one son, Donald and Joyce Whittemore Jr. of Lisbon; two sisters, Geraldine Springfield of Derry, NH and Arlene Hobbs of Norway; four brothers, Clyde McKay and Fred McKay both of Oxford, Roy McKay of Norway and Chesley McKay of California; four grandchildren, Christopher of Arizona, Pam of Norway, Dartmouth of Lisbon and Shasta of Oxford and two great-grandchildren, Amanda of Arizona and Jennifer of Norway.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday April 1, at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Interment will be in the Webberbrook cemetery in Oxford.

Edith M. Willey
1999-01-07

Edith M. Willey, 86, longtime owner and operator of the Bristol Diner, died Tuesday, December 29 at Cove's Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta.

She was born at New Harbor, a daughter of Clarence M. and Myrtie Osier Davis, attended Bristol schools and graduated from Bristol High School in 1921.

After her father's death, her grandmother, Myra Simmons, took an active part in her upbringing.

After high school, she married Arthur Willey and they later established the Bristol Diner and Texaco Station. They resided upstairs and operated the business for many years. Following the sale of the diner, they moved to a new home in Bristol, where Mrs. Willey remained until her recent illness.

She worked as a clerk at Waltz Pharmacy, Damariscotta, for many years. She also worked as caregiver for several elderly people well into her 80s.

Mrs. Willey was a member of Rebekah Lodge, Bristol, the Bristol Mills Congregational Church and the Bristol Ladies Aid.

Her husband died in 1975, and her only son, Elmer, died in 1990.

Surviving are a brother, Burton Grant of Edgecomb; two sisters, Alice House of North Monmouth and Carolyn Chick of Boothbay Harbor; a grandson, Paul Willey of Bristol; a granddaughter, Cindy Quintus of Brunswick, Ohio; and four great-grandsons.

A service to celebrate her life will be held later at the Bristol Mills Congregational Church. Burial will be in Bristol Mills cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are by Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.
