Ralph S. Williams
1998-05-07

Professor Ralph S. Williams, 85, died Sunday, May 3 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

"Roney" was born in New York City, the son of William and Nellie McElvern Mash and attended New York public schools. His high school years were spent at the Goodwill School in Hinckley, Maine. He graduated from Colby College in 1935 and earned his master's degree in business administration at New York University.

Roney was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy during World War II until 1945. He taught for a year at Boothbay Harbor High School before returning to Colby as an instructor in 1947. Roney attained the title of full professor in 1958.

In 1959, he was appointed Administrative Vice President of the college and in 1960, Secretary to the Board of Trustees. Throughout his tenure at Colby, Roney maintained his contact with students by teaching at least one course a semester. Before Roney retired in 1973, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters <23>honoris causa.<23> Roney continued to actively support the college the rest of his life through alumni activities, committee appointments, and financial contributions.

Mr. Williams was elected to various boards throughout his lifetime, including the Waterville Savings Bank, Depositor's Trust, Maine State Criminal Justice Academy, YMCA, Foster Manufacturing, and Good Will-Hinckley.

He was predeceased by his first wife of 47 years, Barbara Howard Williams, and a sister Edna Reily in 1974.

Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Barbara Nowack Williams of East Boothbay; daughters, Marinel Williams Carbone and her husband Robert H. Carbone, Sr. of Boothbay Harbor, and Lucy Jane Williams and her husband Carl B. Williams Jr. of East Boothbay; granddaughters, Lisa Carbone Demmons, Susan Carbone Folsom, Carey Louise Williams, Barbara Carbone Crocker, Jennifer Mary Williams, and Elizabeth Jane Williams; grandson, Robert H. Carbone, Jr; great-granddaughter, Allison Paige Crocker and Marinel Evelyn Demmons; four stepdaughters; one stepson; and five step-grandchildren.

A celebration of Roney's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 11 at the Boothbay Harbor Congregational Church. Peter Panagore will officiate. There will be a reception following the celebration in the church vestry. He will be interred in the Maine Veteran's cemetery in Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boothbay Region YMCA, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538 or St. Andrews Hospital, 3 St. Andrews Lane, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Katherine F. Williams
1998-08-20

Katherine Foote Williams, 78, died at home Monday, August 10 in Taos, New Mexico after a prolonged illness.

Born January 1920 in New York City, she was the daughter of Dr. Sherman Knevals Foote and Katherine Dixon Foote. She attended schools in New York City and Ramsey, New Jersey, where Dr. Foote located his family practice.

Upon graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in journalism from Ryder College in Trenton, New Jersey, Mrs. Williams accepted a position with a firm of Elmo Roper Associates, a polling organization in New York City, where she worked as an assistant to Mr. Roper.

In August 1941, she married Frank Howlett (Bud) Williams. They raised their family in Pines Lake, New Jersey and Palos Verdes, Calif., and summered on Murray Hill Road in East Boothbay. During the late 1960s the Williams owned and operated an employment agency in Hartford, Conn.

Upon retirement, Mrs. Williams and her husband decided to make East Boothbay their year-round home. They resided here for several years during which Mrs. Williams was an active member of the Boothbay Region Garden Club. In 1980, the Williams moved to Marbella, Spain where they lived for ten years. They settled in St. Augustine, Florida upon their return to the U.S. in 1990.

An avid traveler and book lover, Mrs. Williams also enjoyed gourmet cooking, crewel work, gardening, and interior decorating.

She was predeceased by her husband Bud in 1995.

Survivors include a brother, Sherman Foote of Sacramento, Calif.; a sister, Jane Foote of Wayne, N.J.; two sons, Fritz Williams of Center Tuftonboro, N.H. and Todd Williams of East Boothbay; a daughter, Abbie Williams Mullin of Taos, N.M.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

A memorial service for Katherine F. Williams will be held on Sunday, September 20 at 11 a.m. at All Saints By-The-Sea Chapel, Southport. All are welcome.

Louisa Glen Williams
1999-04-29

Louisa Glenn Williams, of Augusta, died on Thursday, April 1, after a long illness at Maine General Medical Center.

Born in 1915 in Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Jessie and Thomas Scobbie.

Mrs. Williams was the wife of the late Maurice F. Williams, who was administrative assistant to five governors including the late Secretary of State and former U.S. Sen. Edmund S. Muskie.

She worked in the office of Dr. Alonzo H. Garcelon and Edward M. Peaslee.

Mrs. Williams was a member of the Kennebec Valley Humane Society Board of Directors for many years, and was honored as a director emeritus for her many years of dedicated service.

She also contributed to many other animal welfare and wildlife organizations.

Survivors include her daughter, L. Glen Williams of West Burke, Vermont; and two grandchildren, Richard Howard of Augusta, and Debra Bishop of Vermont; one nephew, Donald Williams of Winthrop, Mass, and Boothbay Harbor; four great-grandchildren; her humane society pets -- dog, Barney, and cat, Foster.

At Mrs. William's request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society Building Fund Capital Campaign, Pet Haven Lane, Augusta, ME 04330.

Mr. Frank R. Williams

MECHANIC FALLS - Frank R. Williams, 80, of Upper Elm Street,Mechanic Falls died Monday morning, August 16, 1999, at his home following a short illness.

He was born in Jonesport, July 18,1919, the son of Dr. James and Alice Blake Williams and moved to Mechanic Falls with his family at the age of five. He graduated from Mechanic Falls High School in 1937 and the University of Maine at Orono in 1941.While at Orono he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.

After graduating from college he enlisted in the U.S.Marine Corps and received a commission after completing Officer Candidate School in August 1942.

He participated in combat operations with the Third Marine Division in Bougainville,where he landed with the first wave in the amphibious assault and then led a rifle platoon in the successful effort to secure the island. He also participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima, landing on Red Beach One during the first hour of hostilities. He remained on Iwo for 29 days and was a witness to the raising of the flag on Mt. Surabachi.

After the war,he was discharged with the rank of Captain,and returned to Mechanic Falls determined to remain there for the rest of his life.

In 1947 he started an oil business out of the Village Store,and a few years later moved his business to the Texaco Station at the corner of Elm and Lewiston Street. He continued to operate F.R. Williams Heating Oil and Bottled Gas business until his retirement in 1978.

On August 15,1952 he married Jean P. Midgley,and together they raised their three children,spending summers at Westport Island and winters in Mechanic Falls.

Throughout his life he remained active in the community, serving on the Mechanic Falls Budget Committee, the School Board and the Development Commission,where he served as chairman and received an award for 13 years of continuous service.

He had a great love of animals and in his later years,he was often seen touring Mechanic Falls with a yellow labrador in the passenger seat of his truck. His hobbies include bartering, horses, boating and antique cars.

He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife, his three children, Peter of Hollywood,MD, Cynthia Hodgkins of Alexandria,VA and Jonathan of Westport Island, ME, and his seven grandchildren, Sarah, Allison, Megan, Benjamin, James,Nathanial and Andrew.

He was predeceased by his brothers Richard and Roger.

Graveside services were held Thursday at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Mechanic Falls and an open house was be held at the family home.

Those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to the A.S.P.C.A., 420 Poland Spring Rd., Auburn,ME.

Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home,Mechanic Falls.

Ronald Williamson Sr.
1999-07-29

Ronald James Williamson Sr., 65, died on July 22.

Mr. Williamson was born and brought up in the Boston, Massachusetts area and until his retirement in 1995, resided in Essex Jct., Vermont where he raised his family and was owner and operator of Williamson Electric Service, Inc. After his retirement he and his wife traveled throughout the United States and Mexico.

He and his wife Vicki recently came to Boothbay Harbor and opened an antique shop ``Out To See."

Mr. Williamson leaves his wife, Vicki; their nine children; eight grandchildren; one sister; and four brothers.

Robert W. Wilson
1998-10-08

Robert W. Wilson, M.D., 83, Jefferson, beloved husband of Eleanor L. Wilson for 61 years, died Oct. 4 at Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. He was born Feb. 7, 1915 in North Smithfield, RI, the son of Mary W. and Austin M. Wilson. He was a graduate of Brown University in 1936 and of Tufts University School of Medicine in 1940. After interning for two years at the Paterson General Hospital in New Jersey, he joined the Army Medical Corps and served until the end of World War II. Leaving the service where he had been stationed at Glennan General Hospital in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, a prisoner of war hospital, he returned with his family to New England.

In the summer of 1946 they purchased a home in Jefferson, and he began work at Togus Veterans Hospital. He became a rating specialist and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1973, at which time he was presented with the Distinguished Career Award. While he was working at Togus, local people often came to his home asking for medical assistance. Dr. Wilson responded by opening an office nights and weekends at his home.

For 25 years he served at Togus and Jefferson, making house calls at all hours of the night. His dedication and devotion to his patients was deeply appreciated by those he tended.

Dr. Wilson was predeceased by a son, Robert W. Wilson, Jr., a brother, David J. Wilson, and a sister, Evelyn A. Perron. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor L. Wilson of Jefferson; daughter Dr. Constance M. Wilson of DeKalb, Ill.; daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Edwin A. Collins (Mary Martha) of Hermon; son and daughter-in-law Dr. and Mrs. Roger M. Wilson of Bar Harbor; sisters, Margaret Wilson of Pittston and Dorothy Rose of Sisters, Ore., and four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A memorial service was held Oct. 7 at the First Baptist Church in Jefferson. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Dr. Wilson may send donations to Vassalboro Friends Monthly Meeting, c/o Avery Harrington, RR 1, Box 55585, Oakland, 04963.

Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Everett R. "Chip" Wilson
1998-03-26

LANCASTER, MA Everett R. `Chip' Wilson, Sr., 56, of Lancaster was stricken ill while working in the Bronx, New York City and died Wednesday, March 11, 1998, in Lincoln Hospital there.

Born January 7, 1942, he was the son of Merle and Mary (Hardy) Wilson, attended South Lancaster Academy and graduated from high school through the Worcester Adult Education Program. He latter attended Mount Wachusett Community College, Gardner and the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.

He lived in Woodstock and Florida before moving to Lancaster in 1958.

Mr. Wilson, a Class A professional truck driver, was lead driver at Nasoya Foods of Ayer, where he had worked for the past 12 years. Previously he had worked as a stonemason and equipment operator for Gifford Brothers Construction and Frank James Masonry.

He enjoyed cross-country skiing, carpentry, computers and gardening. He and his wife crafted handmade dolls.

He and his wife, Linda A. (Prentiss) Wilson, were married on March 26, 1960.

Besides his wife he leaves two sons, Steven P. Wilson of Clinton, MA, and Everett R. Wilson of Lancaster, MA; four daughters, Sharie Ann Peters and Katherine Shelales, both of Lancaster, Debrah Connell of Columbia, SC and Melinda Vosburg of Clinton; his mother, now Marie Currie, and stepfather, John Currie, both of South Lancaster; two brothers, Vern C. Wilson of Leominster, MA, and M. Clayton Wilson of Bolton, MA; two sisters, Mary Lou Merchant of Leominster and Katherine Hutchinson of West Peru; 16 grandchildren and nieces and nephews. The funeral was held at the Village Church with burial in Eastwood cemetery in Lancaster.

Estelle Howard Wilson
1998-04-02

Estelle Howard Wilson, widow of the late Rev. Cleveland I. Wilson, formerly of Osterville, MA and South Paris, died at Inverness, Florida, on March 23, 1998, where she had been residing with her grandnephew, James A. McLendon, and his wife, Carey.

Mrs. Wilson grew up in Malden, MA and attended public schools there. She continued her musical and theological education at Gordon College in Boston and Acadia University in Nova Scotia. She was a direct descendent of Lord Howard, Earl of Effingham, commissioned to the admiralty by King Henry VIII.

Reverend and Mrs. Wilson s ministry spanned the period from 1920 until 1959, serving in the Dudley Street Baptist Church, Roxbury, MA, Chelsea Baptist Church, Chelsea, MA, Chelmsford Baptist Church, Lowell, MA, Adams Square Baptist Church, Worcester, MA, Osterville Baptist Church, Osterville, MA, and the Mashpee Baptist Church, Mashpee, MA.

Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Hyannis Baptist Church and past matron and lifetime member of the Cotuit Chapter 177, of the Order of Eastern Star.

She is survived by four generations of many nieces and nephews. Graveside services were conducted at the Hillside Cemetery, in Osterville, MA on Cape Cod.

Eldred C. Wilson
1999-02-18

POUGHKEEPSIE , NY - Eldred C. Wilson, 58, of Bryant Pond, died February 12, 1999, in Poughkeepsie, NY at the Vassar Brother's Hospital, where he had been a patient.

Born in Woodstock on September 13, 1940, he was the son of the late Everell C. and Elsie May (Wilson) Wilson. He attended Forrest-Dale School in Woodstock prior to moving to Florida and attending Forest Lake Academy in Forest City, FL.

A self-employed carpenter, Mr. Wilson enjoyed all aspects of carpentry, especially finish work. He was able to perform finish work many times in the homes that he remodeled.

A 20 year member of the Dixfield Seventh Day Adventist Church, he had resided in Bryant Pond for over 20 years, coming from Florida.

Surviving are a son, Shawn, of Bryant Pond; a brother, Melvin, and his wife, Jean, of West Paris; two sisters, Merlene, and her husband, Conrad Ising, of Debary, FL and Coralie and her husband, Dom Villable, of Poughkeepsie, NY; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Predeceasing Eldred was a son, Dale.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at at the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock. Interment will be in the spring at the Tuell Town Cemetery, West Paris.

Those who wish may make donations in Mr. Wilson's memory to Merlene Ising, 232 Agua Vista, Debary, FL 32713.

Joyce E. Wing
1998-12-10

OXFORD - Joyce E. Wing, 61 of Oxford died Friday, December 4, 1998, at her residence in Oxford.

She was born in Lewiston on March 8, 1937, the daughter of Edward and Helen Keene Curtis.

She was educated in Mechanic Falls schools. She worked for over 25 years for Liberty Mutual as a supervisor, retiring in 1997.

She enjoyed the out of doors especially birds, hunting, fishing, gardening and flowers.

She lived in the Oxford area with her long time companion and best friend, Linley Fortier.

She is survived by six daughters, Linda Jahn of Chesterville, VA., Cindy L. Callahan of Lisbon, Kelly J. Callahan of South Portland, Maureen B. Berube of Auburn, Peg S. Fortier of New Hampshire and Peri A. Crook of North Conway, NH; a son, Al Fortier of Norway; one brother, Gregory D. Curtis of California; 16 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Graveside services were held December 8 at the Highland cemetery in West Poland.

Donations in Mrs. Wing's memory may be sent to either the American Cancer Society, Box 456, Brunswick, ME 04011, or to the Oxford Rescue, Oxford, ME 04270. Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls.
