Gertrude C. Winters
1999-09-30

Gertrude ``Jackie" Case Winters, 80, of Wiscasset, died Saturday, September 25 at her home.

Born in New Bedford, Mass. on March 11, 1919, she was the daughter of Everett and Alice Sawtelle Case. She attended New Bedford schools and graduated from New Bedford High School. She attended Simmons College and affiliated schools in Boston where she studied nursing, becoming a registered nurse. While studying to be a nurse in Boston, Mrs. Winters completed most of her practical education at Boston's Children Hospital.

After her marriage to Jack W. Winters she moved to Wiscasset.

Mrs. Winters was an active volunteer and was nominated to receive the Jefferson Award. For many years she volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the Friends of the Library in Wiscasset, an active member of the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, an active member and volunteer of the Boothbay Harbor YMCA and was a foster parent. Mrs. Winters was also a member of the Beta Signa Phi sorority.

Surviving are two sons, Wesley Winters of Yarmouth and Craig Winters of Wiscasset; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Joy) Swift of Richmond; one sister, Phebe C. Burnham of California; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband and a sister, Jocelyn Searles.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, September 28 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset with the Rev. Peg Grzelkowski officiating. Interment followed in Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset. Memorial donations may be made to either the Boothbay Harbor YMCA at P.O. Box 500, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538 or CHANS Hospice, 50 Baribeau Drive, Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home of Wiscasset.

Ruth C. Walsh
1999-11-04

Ruth Chicoine Walsh, 74, of Southport, died Friday, October 29 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Walsh taught school for 36 years; her first school was in Clarksburg, Mass. Then she moved on to Pelham Manor, Siwonoi School. Later she taught at Greenwich Academy, Indian Field School and the Greenwich Country Day School. Mrs. Walsh's artwork is in many family collections. She painted a life-size nativity scene picture for the Congregational Church in North Adams, Mass. The models in the picture were choir members as well as her father, Rev. Victor Chicoine.

She was also the founder of the Hare and Hound Social Group of Southport. In addition to her husband, William N. Walsh, Mrs. Walsh is survived by her son, William N. Walsh Jr. of Boothbay Harbor; a daughter, Sarah Beth Ward of Provodenciales, (BWI) British West Indies; a brother, David Chicoine of Mass.; two sisters, Faith Gagner of New York, and Betty Eldridge of Delaware; and three granddaughters.

A service, celebrating Mrs. Walsh's life, will be held June 17, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Southport Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made in her name to the ALS Association, 27001 Agoura Road, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301-9817. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Mrs. Ruth E. Willey
1999-12-02

WEST PARIS - Ruth E. Willey, 91, of Harrison, died Tuesday morning, November 23, at the Ledgeview Living Center in West Paris, following a long illness.

She was born in Sweden, the daughter of Charles and Norene Lord Brackett. She attended Sweden schools.

Mrs. Willey had been a housekeeper and worked in the cafeteria at the Harrison Grammar School.

Her husband Perley Willey died in 1963.

Surviving are three sons, Roscoe and his wife, Eleanor, of North Bridgton, Robert and his wife, Cheryl of Fryeburg, and Cecil and his wife, Louise, of Sweden; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Stanley Willey.

Graveside services were held on Friday, November 26, at the Forest Hill cemetery in Bridgton, with Reverend Janice Wilcox officiating.

Arrangements were by the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home in Bridgton.

Ruth Chicoine Walsh

A memorial service for Ruth Chicoine Walsh, 74, of West Southport, who died on October 29, 1999, will be held at the United Methodist Church of Southport at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, with the Rev. DanaBeth Wells-Goodwin and the Rev. John Widing of Avon, Conn. officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the A.L.S. Association, 2700 Agoura Road, Suite 150, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301-5104.

Annabelle N. Welty
2000-04-20

Word has been received of the recent death of Annabelle Noss Welty, 100, wife of Reverend Ivan Welty, minister of the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor from 1956 to 1965

The daughter of missionaries, she was born on December 4, 1899 in Sendai, Japan. At the age of 15, she traveled alone to this country in order to attend Northfield School for Girls. She ultimately received a bachelor of arts degree from Mt. Holyoke College and a master's degree in religious education from Oberlin Seminary

Mrs. Welty was an equal partner in the ministry of her husband, Ivan Welty, a minister in the Congregational Church, now the United Church of Christ. She taught and oversaw Christian education programs, directed youth choirs, and contributed to her husband's writings. Together, the Weltys served churches in Michigan, Missouri, Colorado, and Maine

Mrs. Welty was an avid reader, an accomplished seamstress, an enthusiastic gardener, and a crossword puzzle expert

Her husband Ivan Welty died in 1973

Survivors include three children, Carol Faris of Philadelphia, Penn., Sylvia Geer of Alexandria, Va., and Christopher Welty of Austin, Texas; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren

Robert J. Wheelden
2000-01-13

GREENVILLE - Robert J. Wheelden, 50, died peacefully Saturday, January 1, while surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born November 13, 1949, in Greenville, the son of George and Mary (Gagnon) Wheelden.

He served his country with two tours of duty in Vietnam in the U.S. Air Force.

He worked for Great Northern Paper Co. and was a cook for many years. He was formerly from Oxford.

He is survived by his loving mother, Mary Wheelden, of Greenville; two daughters and their spouses, Lisa and Scott Clukey of Cambridge, MA and Marie and Eric Ford of Tennessee; three grandchildren, Jessie, Ryan, and Dylan; two brothers, Richard and Connie Wheelden of Bangor and C. George Wheelden of Portland; one sister and her husband, Donna and Ralph Murray, Sr. of Greenville; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; one sister-in-law, Colleen Flynn; and a special friend, Malita Lombert.

A memorial Mass was held on Saturday, January 8, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Greenville, with Father Morin presiding. Burial will be in the family lot in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to C.A. Dean Hospital Emergency Room, P.O. Box 1109, Greenville, ME 04441.

Arrangements were under the care of McCrary Funeral Home in Greenville.

William Whytock
2000-02-10

RUMFORD - Funeral services for William Scotty Whytock were conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 2, at the Meader & Son Funeral Home in Rumford, with Reverend Linda Kimball officiating.

Music selections were Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, and a special selection You Are the Wind Beneath My Wings on guitar sung by Elaine Michaud.

Honor Guards from the Mexico Fire Department were Kevin Nasatowitz, Dwight Murphy, and Richie Jones.

Bagpiper George Worthley of Hiram provided bagpipe music for those entering and leaving the funeral home. Many member of St. Andrew's Society of Maine attended the funeral.

Interment will be in the spring at the Farrington-Morton cemetery in Mexico.

Mrs. Dorothy E. Walker
2000-01-13

WEST PARIS- Dorothy E. Walker, 79, of Norway died Friday January 7, 2000, at the Ledgeview Nursing Home.

She was born in New Haven, CT on January 29, 1920, the daughter of Edward and Ada Roberts Korn.

She attended Poland schools and graduated from Mechanic Falls High School in 1938.

She married Joseph Walker on November 2, 1940 and he predeceased her on August 6, 1998.

Mrs. Walker worked for many years at Robert Milton Insurance Agency and was also a housewife.

She was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Norway.

She is survived by her two sons, Robert of Norway and John of Johnson City, Tennessee; four grandchildren Trisha-Daniel of Strong, ME, Melissa Ann of Norway, Jenna-Beth and Lexi-Jo both of Johnson City, Tennessee, and one niece, Jean.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Janice-Marie, and a sister, Gladys Bryant.

A private family graveside service will be held in the spring at the Norway Pine Grove Cemetery.

Donations in her memory can be made to the Parkinsons Support Group of Augusta, ME.

Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Phyllis M. Wright
2000-05-18

Phyllis M. Wright, 72, of Westport, died Monday, May 15 at the Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in Bath, she was a daughter of Robert and Vera M. Brown Wallace, and grew up in Dresden and Bath, attending Bath schools.

In 1958 she married Donald S. Wright Sr., and moved to Westport in 1973.

Mrs. Wright worked at Congress Sportswear in Bath for more than 30 years.

She was a 22-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her hobbies included playing Bingo, cards and cribbage.

Her husband died April 15, 1998.

Surviving are three sons, William J. Babine of Lewiston, Michael R. Babine of Edgecomb, and Donald S. Wright Jr. of Westport; a daughter, Mrs. Walter (Diane) M. Jones of Walton, N.Y.; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Wayne (Linda) D.

Saunders of Woolwich, Mrs. David (Joan) A. Pratt of Phippsburg and Mrs.

Richard (Marie) E. Hibl of Wiscasset; four brothers; four sisters; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday May 19 in Greenlawn Cemetery, Wiscasset. Arrangements are by David E. Desmond Funeral Home of Bath.

Ralph D. Williams
2000-02-10

Ralph D. Williams, 67, of Newcastle, died Sunday, February 6 at Cove's Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta.

Born January 26, 1933, he was the son of Ralph and Dallis (Cunning-ham) Williams.

Mr. Williams enjoyed working in his basement restoring cars, and building birdhouses for his wife and other family members. He is remembered by his family and friends as "the neighborhood handyman." Right up to the time of his death he remained a caretaker for local homes. He and his wife, Ruth, would have celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on February 23. He was predeceased by his parents, as well as a stepfather, Mauritz Danielson.

Survivors include his wife Ruth of Newcastle; four children, Ralph Williams Jr. of Boothbay Harbor, Jim Williams of Newcastle, Julie Cooper of Edgecomb, and Lisa Williams of Newcastle; two brothers, Wayne Williams, and Mauritz Danielson, both of Boothbay Harbor; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held at the Strong Funeral Home on Thursday, February 10 from 6 to 7 p.m. A service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, February 11 at 2 p.m. He will be laid to rest at the Sheepscot Village Cemetery.

John D. Winwood Sr.
2000-03-09

John D. Winwood Sr., age 75, of Arrowsic, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000 at the Hawthorne House in Freeport.

Born in Roscoe, Pennsylvania on November 18, 1924, he was the son of Arthur and Florence (Haley) Winwood.

Mr. Winwood married Priscilla Spicer who predeceased him in 1961. He was employed by the Cole Pocket in Bath and was also a painter. He was later employed at Bath Iron Works as a stage builder retiring in 1986. He married Regina Hilton.

He enjoyed playing softball, traveling and watching wrestling.

His wife Regina Winwood predeceased him on April 1, 1998.

Survivors include one son, John D. Winwood Jr. of Belle Venon, Penn.; one stepson, Errol Pinkham of Wiscasset; two stepdaughters, Renee J. Merrill of Woolwich and Juanita G. Greenleaf of Westport; several grandchildren; many great-grand-children; one great-great-grand-daughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 9 at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street in Bath. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 10 at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Mountainside cemetery in Georgetown in the spring.

Gertrude E. Woodman
2000-01-20

Gertrude Evelyn Woodman, 80, of Nobleboro, passed away Saturday, January 15 at Coves Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta.

Born May 4, 1919 on Swans Island, she was the daughter of James and Maggie Stanley Martin. Upon the death of her mother, George and Gertrude Stanley Wallace of Bath adopted her. She attended the Bath schools.

On September 3, 1938 she married Roscoe P. Woodman of Bath and they made their home in Nobleboro. She worked in the Medomak Canning Factory and the Patagon Button Factory.

Mrs. Woodman was a 60-year member of the Nobleboro Grange. She loved playing the piano at the Granges and going back to visit the island where she was born.

She was predeceased by her husband who died November 30, 1997.

Survivors include her daughters, Jeannette Hanson of Wiscasset, Mary Louise Grant of Windham, and Margaret Matthews of Hudson; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Haining of East Brunswick; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta on Wednesday, January 19. Pastor Glen West of Bible Baptist Church conducted the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the local office of Kno-Wal-Lin Home Health Care.
