Earl C. Wallace
2000-01-27

Earl C. Wallace, 66, South Waldoboro, died Jan. 20 at Miles Memorial Hospital, Damariscotta. He was born July 13, 1933 in Waldoboro, the son of Orrin and Naomi Flanders Wallace. He grew up and attended local schools in Waldoboro.

He worked for the town for many years, starting out as a truck driver, operating heavy equipment and snow plowing. He became highway foreman in 1982 and remained in that position until retiring in 1995. He also lobstered and dug clams all his life. He enjoyed hunting and especially being on the water hauling lobsters.

He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Maxine Theriault, and two grandchildren, Kip and Laura Stanley.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Betty Wallace of Waldoboro; daughters Naomi McPhee of Waldoboro, Sandi Ballard of Friendship, and Sharon Brouillet of Orange, Mass.; son Edward Benner of Rockland; brother Lester Wallace of Waldoboro; ten grandchildren: Joseph and Elizabeth Brouillet of Orange, Mass., Rachel and Jeromey McPhee of Waldoboro, Angela Giusani of Medford, Mass., Valerie Giusani of Waldoboro, Benjamin Benner of Friendship, Jeremy Rytky of Calif., and Jessica and Geneva Benner of Thomaston; seven great grandchildren: Amanda Loretta Johnson and Russell James and Raina Cheyene McPhee, all of Waldoboro and Hunter Brouillet of Orange.

Visiting hours: Jan. 24, Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro. Service: Jan. 25 at the Home, Rev. Robert Dorr officiated. Burial: Back Cove Cemetery, South Waldoboro.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Waldoboro Ambulance Service, PO Box J, Waldoboro 04572.

Doris Marie Spencer Wallis
1999-12-23

Doris Marie Spencer Wallis of Jefferson died Dec. 14 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta at the age of 90.

She was born July 17, 1909 in New Rochelle, NY to Paul Bertram and Anna Marie Spencer.

She was a graduate of Colby College, Class of 1931, and of the Yale School of Nursing, Class of 1934.

Doris married John Wallis, a distinguished New York City attorney on Aug. 30, 1935. They enjoyed more than 60 years of married life until separated by John’s death on April 8, 1996. Doris and John were residents of Jefferson since June 1966.

Doris Wallis is survived by two sons, Paul H. Wallis of Pelham Manor, NY and Nathaniel S. Wallis of Jefferson; five granddaughters: Kimberly Charbonneau of Essex, Vt., Lori Seigars of Richmond, Kristen Wallis of Newcastle, Deborah Wallis of New Rochelle, NY and Jillian Wallis of Boston, Mass.

A memorial service will be held after the first of the year at such time and place as yet to be determined. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jefferson Public Library, PO Box 226, Jefferson 04348 or to the Jefferson Historical Society, c/o Joel Gray, 221 Gates Rd., Jefferson 04348.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Home.

Ruth C. Walsh
1999-11-04

Ruth Chicoine Walsh, 74, of Southport, died Friday, October 29 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Walsh taught school for 36 years; her first school was in Clarksburg, Mass. Then she moved on to Pelham Manor, Siwonoi School. Later she taught at Greenwich Academy, Indian Field School and the Greenwich Country Day School. Mrs. Walsh's artwork is in many family collections. She painted a life-size nativity scene picture for the Congregational Church in North Adams, Mass. The models in the picture were choir members as well as her father, Rev. Victor Chicoine.

She was also the founder of the Hare and Hound Social Group of Southport. In addition to her husband, William N. Walsh, Mrs. Walsh is survived by her son, William N. Walsh Jr. of Boothbay Harbor; a daughter, Sarah Beth Ward of Provodenciales, (BWI) British West Indies; a brother, David Chicoine of Mass.; two sisters, Faith Gagner of New York, and Betty Eldridge of Delaware; and three granddaughters.

A service, celebrating Mrs. Walsh's life, will be held June 17, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Southport Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made in her name to the ALS Association, 27001 Agoura Road, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301-9817. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Ruth Chicoine Walsh
2000-06-01

A memorial service for Ruth Chicoine Walsh, 74, of West Southport, who died on October 29, 1999, will be held at the United Methodist Church of Southport at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, with the Rev. DanaBeth Wells-Goodwin and the Rev. John Widing of Avon, Conn. officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the A.L.S. Association, 2700 Agoura Road, Suite 150, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301-5104.

Charles E. Waltz
1998-10-15

Charles E. Waltz, 54, Waldoboro, husband of Katrina Glaude Waltz, died unexpectedly Oct. 6 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

He was born in Rockland, a son of Herbert and Elizabeth Crandon Waltz, attended local schools and was a 1962 graduate of Waldoboro High School.

After high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in Europe. Following his discharge in 1966, he served one year as a legislative sergeant at arms with the Maine House of Representatives. He later attended the University of Maine at Orono, graduating with a degree in philosophy.

Mr. Waltz and his wife celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on Sept. 28.

He dug clams for two years and in 1977 received his journeyman's electrical degree from the Kennebec Valley Vocational School. Three months later he received his master electrician's license and founded Broad Bay Electric.

Mr. Waltz supported Amnesty International and the Good Shepherd Food Bank. He was an active member of the West Bay Rotary Club in Camden and was recently honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He also was a member of the Midcoast Home Builders Association, where he enjoyed promoting and presenting scholarships.

Besides his wife of Waldoboro, Mr. Waltz is survived by a son, Aaron C. of Waldoboro; a daughter, Bethany L. Overlock of Warren; and a grandson, Jared M. Overlock of Warren.

A celebration of his life was held Oct. 10 at the First Congregational Church, Warren. Arrangements are by Burpee-Strong Funeral Home, Rockland.

Douglas A. Ward
2000-02-03

Douglas A. Ward, 78, Westbrook, died Jan. 29 at a Portland hospital following a long illness.

He was born in Bristol, a son of George A. and Martha Russell Ward, and graduated from Bristol High School in 1940.

He joined the Coast Artillery in Thomaston and served in the islands of Casco Bay, as well as overseas in the European Theater in France and Germany, including the Battle of the Bulge with the 455th anti-aircraft division.

Mr. Ward worked at Loring Short and Harmon for many years, retiring in 1984. He played golf and was a member of Rivermeadow Golf Course where he made a hole-in-one in 1995.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Anne Quealy Ward of Westbrook; two sons, William of Winslow and Robert of Riverside, R.I.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours: Jan. 31, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Blais Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook. Funeral service: Feb. 1, 1 p.m. Burial: New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford, N.H.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011.

Earl F. Ward Sr.
2000-06-08

Earl F. “Oilburner” Ward Sr., 69, South Paris, died June 4 after a brief illness.

He was born in Phippsburg, a son of Arnold and Ruth Wallace Ward, and attended school in Steep Falls, Standish. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

Mr. Ward was a truck driver and mechanic for more than 30 years. His hobbies included fishing and hunting.

He married Cynde M. McAllister on June 14, 1997.

Surviving are his wife of South Paris; sons Darrell, Earl Jr. and William, all of Portland, and Kristopher of Casco; daughters Joan Oiler of Waldoboro, Rachel Taylor of Windham, Crystal Seymour of Phillips, Cindy Knight of Portland and Meredith of Westbrook; brother David of Thomaston; sisters Elenor Lane of Limerick, Hazel Parratto of Portland, Barbara McFee of Windham and Patricia Amlove of Bridgton; 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Graveside service: June 8, 10 a.m., Maple Grove Cemetery, Mechanic Falls. Arrangements: Weston-Chandler Funeral Home.

Ethel Ward
2000-06-22

She was born November 16, 1903, in Bethel, the daughter of Susan and Charles Capen. She was educated in the elementary schools in Bethel and graduated from Gould Academy in 1922.

Mrs. Ward attended college in Ithaca, NY, for one year after high school graduation. She graduated from Farmington State Teachers College in 1961, which she completed through correspondence courses and summer sessions. She taught in the Bethel School System for over 30 years.

Mrs. Ward married Willis W. Ward of Conway, NH, on November 26, 1927. He died May 27, 1977.

Mrs. Ward was a member of the Bethel Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, and the Fish and Game Associations. For many years she belonged to Home Extension.

In later years, she enjoyed many trips with the senior citizens on the Main Line Tour Bus, and she also made a trip to Hawaii. She especially loved to read and enjoyed many other hobbies such as crocheting, knitting, embroidery, gardening, and quilting. She started quilting in 1973 and made 13 handmade quilts, eight of which she gave as gifts to her grandchildren. Over the years she also made many machine ones. Her hands were never idle, as she was always making gifts for family and friends and did hand work year round for the Friday Gift Shop, kept open all summer by the United Methodist Women of Bethel.

Mrs. Ward is survived by two daughters, Mary Lurvey of Standish and Joan Howe of Bethel; seven grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and nine great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson, Michael, who died in 1987.

Memorial services will be held on July 1, 2000, at 2p.m. in the Methodist Church in Bethel.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Methodist Church, Main St., Bethel, ME 04217. Arrangements are under the care of the Greenleaf Funeral Home, Vernon St., Bethel.

Kennedy E. Warren
2001-03-01

Kennedy Elizabeth Warren died February 8, 2001, at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

She was the infant daughter of Brian Warren and Dawn Blackman of Boothbay.

Surviving are her parents; grandparents, Garry and Karen Blackman and Jay and Marie Warren; and great-grandmother, Dawn Giles, all of Boothbay.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, February 13 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay with John Kreppein officiating.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Clarence Warren, 81, dies
2001-02-23

Clarence John Warren, 81, of Gray, died February 17 at his home.

Mr. Warren was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, a son of John and Laura Barker Warren. He moved to Gray from Stoughton, Massachusetts.

He was a member of the Gray American Legion Post Number 86, and attended the First Congregational Church of Gray.

He is survived by Luella M. Boyd Warren, of Gray, his wife of 58 years; four sons, Charles, of Savannah, GA, Richard, of Halifax, MA, Michael, of Vermont, and Frank, of Sharon, MA; one daughter, Marilyn Orfino, of Honolulu, HI; a sister, Frances Drake, of Rhode Island; two brothers, Addison and Sherrill, both of Massachusetts; and nine grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held this Spring. Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home, of Gray.

Edith A. Webber
2000-07-20

Born in Greenville, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Oliver and Viola (Bullock) Fowler. She was a resident of Wayland for many years.

She was the wife of the late Bradbury Webber, who died in 1996.

Survivors include her daughter, Cheryl W. Gemborys and her husband, Paul, of South Deerfield; her granddaughter, Katheryne D. Lane of York; her grandsons, Eric A. Gemborys of Hopkinton and Matthew B. Gemborys, U.S. Coast Guard, New Haven, Conn.; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 15 in the John Bryant Funeral Home in Wayland. Burial followed in Lakeview cemetery in Wayland.

Emmett S. Weed
2000-10-05

Emmitt S Weed, 91, of Auburn, died in his home at Seville Park Plaza on Thur., Sept. 28. He was born in Pikeville, Ohio on June 7, 1909 the son of John and Emma (Nusbaum) Weed.

He graduated from the local High school in Pikeville, Ohio. On October 31, 1948 he married Mary (Densmore) Hewitt.

Mr. Weed was resident of Damariscotta from 1945 thru 1978, he then made his home in Gardiner from 1978 thru 1994 when he moved to this area with Mrs. Weed.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II serving with the 100th Armored Division in Europe. After the war he owned and operated the Pine Tree Variety Store in Damariscotta for many years, later working at Hardware stores in Damariscotta and Richmond.

He participated in numerous community and civic organizations including the American Legion Post #42, VFW Post #8395. The Alna Anchor Lodge No. 43 A.F. & A.M., The Rotary Club and the Lions Club. He served as church warden and treasurer of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Newcastle. He served as Commander and Service Officer for his American Legion Post. He was actively involved with the Damariscotta Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Weeds other interests included fishing, gardening, antique selling and trading.

He is survived by his son Captain Jay T. Weed of Key West, FL., his daughter Jane Weed and son-in-law Stephen Kottler of Lewiston, his granddaughter Judy Rooney of Searsport, his niece Shirley Mitchell of Woodbury, Conn. and a cousin Barbara Spencer of Gardiner. He is predeceased by Mrs. Weed in 1995, a sister Ferne Byrm and a brother Chester Weed.

Rachel (Gilbert) Webb
2000-11-30

Rachel (Gilbert) Webb, 90, of Orono and Cambridge, Mass., wife of the late Oscar Webb, formerly of the Boothbay Region, died Sunday, November 26.

Born August 4, 1910 in Guilford, she was the daughter of Eugene and Lena (Butterfield) Gilbert.

Survivors include her daughter, Virginia Burns of Cambridge, Mass.; grandsons, Kirk Burns and his wife Karen and Jonathan Burns; a great-granddaughter, Dana Burns; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 2 at Mt. Hope cemetery with the Rev. Kevin Holsapple, Rector, St. Johns Episcopal Church in Bangor officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to meet at the Superintendent's Lodge, State Street in Bangor at 10:45 a.m. Saturday.

Arrangements are by Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street in Bangor.

Evelyn W. Wheeler
2000-08-24

Evelyn W. Wheeler, 91, of Boothbay died Sunday, August 20 in Weston, Florida.

She was born December 19, 1908 in Boothbay Harbor, the daughter of Robert and Rachel Bowman Watts, and attended schools in Boothbay Harbor. In 1929 she married Gerald Wheeler, and was a homemaker. She was known for her spotless home and as being a great cook, devoted to her family. She was a member of Seaside Grant #171.

Her husband died in 1998, as did a daughter in 1935, and her sister, Lulu Grover.

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy and her husband Dwight Paine of Waldoboro, and Rachel Van Lehn of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; one son, Robert Lowe of Southport, Florida; one sister, Kathleen Adams of Boothbay; one brother, Ralph Watts of Brunswick; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are planned Saturday, August 26 at 1 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. Al Roberts will officiate. Burial will follow in Oceanview Cemetery, Boothbay. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, 11 Howard Street, Boothbay Harbor.
