Herbert Whitman
2000-07-20

He was born May 25, 1938, in Woodstock, the son of Barbara (Heath) Whitman, and the late Donald Whitman.

Mr. Whitman was educated in the Woodstock schools, graduating from Woodstock High School in 1956.

He served in the U. S. Navy from 1956 to 1960, aboard the destroyer USS Myles C. Fox.

Mr. Whitman married the former Carol Jane Albert, of Lisbon Falls, in 1963.

He was employed by H.P. Hood for nine years, owned the Village Store in Bryant Pond for six years, and worked for the State of Maine, until his retirement in 1999.

He was an avid outdoorsman, and played baseball with Robert's 88ers.

Mr. Whitman especially loved to hunt with his two son, his son-in-law, and close friends, Steve Cyr, and Roger Akers. In later years he enjoyed playing golf with his friends, and his favorite time was that which was spent with his family, and his dog and constant companion, Joe.

Besides his mother, and his wife of 37 years, Carol, he is survived by two sons, David W. and his wife Debbie of South Paris, and Brian E. and his wife Marlene, of Lisbon Falls; a daughter, Leigh A. and her husband Robert Cyr, of Minot; a sister, Sylvia Doughty, and her husband Stan, of Lisbon Falls; and a brother, Donald Whitman, of North Conway. His most prized possessions were his grandchildren Brett Cossar, and Heath Whitman, Randi and Kyle Whitman, and Lindsey and Courtney Cyr.

Mr Whitman was predeceased by his father and a brother. Larry.

It was his request that funeral services be private.

Friends who wish may make memorial contributions, in his memory, to: Tri-Town Rescue, P.O. Box 275, W. Paris, ME 04289. Arrangements by the Andrews Funeral Home, S. Woodstock.

Christopher Whitney
1999-07-01

Christopher Whitney died in Willits, Cal. on April 29 at the age of 53. He was a graduate of High Mowing School in Wilton, NH and attended Pratt Institute and Marlboro College before graduating from the New England School of Photography in Boston.

He is survived by his mother, Sarah Upton Whitney of Damariscotta; his father, Stephen T. Whitney of Belfast; a brother, Jonathan Whitney of Brownfield; a half sister, Lisa Whitney of Belfast; and a son, Michael Upton Whitney of Grass Valley, Cal.

A private memorial service was held at Harrington Cemetery.

Russ Wiggins dead at 96
2000-11-15

J. Russell Wiggins, 96, former owner and editor of the Ellsworth American, longtime managing editor of the Washington Post and a former U. S. ambassador to the United Nations died Nov. 19 after a period of ill-health. For many years Russ was an active member of the Maine Press Association and regularly attended its events. Until just a few months ago, he continued writing for the American and traveled regular to its office. A granddaughter, Patsy Wiggins, is also active in Maine journalism as a news anchor for Portland television station WGME-TV, Ch. 13.

Annie B. Willey
2000-05-18

Annie B. Willey, 60, Rockland, died May 12 at her home after a long illness.

She was born in Port Clyde at St. George, a daughter of Francis L. and Catherine E. Cushman Ellis, and attended Port Clyde, Bremen and Aroostook schools.

On Oct. 31, 1959, she married Harold E. Willey Sr. in Waldoboro and made their home here.

Mrs. Willey was a homemaker. Her pastimes included crocheting, crafts and the outdoors, especially boating and being on the water.

Surviving are her husband of Rockland; her mother, Catherine E. Teele and stepfather, Burton W. Teele of Port Clyde; two sons, Harold E. Jr. of Rockland and Robert W. Willey of Manchester, N.H.; four brothers, Wesley R. of Waldoboro and Milford C. Ellis of Thomaston, and Burton W. Teele Jr. of Boothbay and Ira D. Teele of Warren; five sisters, Virginia A. Call, Mrs. Theodore (Bridget) H. Palino and Gladys M. Collamore, all of Florida, Mrs. Malcolm (Georgia) C. Benner of Bristol, and Mrs. Frank (Gertrude) J. Harnish of North Newcastle; and two grandsons.

Visiting hours will be 6 to 8 p.m., 5-15 at Burpee-Strong Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tues., 5-16 with the Rev. Dr. Linwood Welch officiating.

Jennie F. Williams
2001-01-11

Jennie F. Williams, 90, of Boothbay Harbor died Sunday, January 7 at St. Andrews Gregory Wing.

She was born December 7, 1910 in Boston Mass., the daughter of Frank and Angie Sawyer Williams.

Mrs. Williams worked for many years at Dodge Inn Restaurant and Davis Bros. Cabins in Edgecomb. She also worked for Hyde Home for Crippled Children in Bath and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery.

Although she had only two children, her house was home to many. She had a hand in raising many family members from her youngest sister to some great-grandchildren.

In her later years she spent many wonderful summers camping through-out the U.S. and Canada with her cousin, Lucille Machon of Boothbay Harbor.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur E. Williams, in 1980 and her brother, Chester Williams, in 1998.

Jennie is survived by a son, Richard E. Williams, and a daughter, Junellen W. Brault, both of Edgecomb; two sisters, Thelma Ziska, of Florida, and Shirley Dowdy of Edgecomb; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be announced in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jennie's memory to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, Atlantic Highway, PO Box 7, Edgecomb, Me 04556.

Harriet M. W. Williams
1999-06-03

Harriet Magee Walton Williams, 86, Lexington, Ky., died May 26.

Born in Otis, Mass., she was a daughter of Elmer and Hattie Magee Walton.

A University of Kentucky graduate, she taught general science at Lexington Junior High School from 1936-1964, and at Eastern Kentucky University's Model School from 1964-1966. She also dealt in books and antiques and operated the Sail Loft Antiques Shop in Newcastle, where she and her husband spent their summers.

She and the late Wallace J. Williams had been married for 57 years.

Mrs. Williams was one of the founders and volunteers of Lexington Children's Theater, was a member of the Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Rafinesque Garden Club and the Twin Village Garden Club in Newcastle.

Survivors include a son, Lawrence (Pat) Williams of Lexington, Ky.; a daughter, Sherry (C.T.) Hughes of Somerset, Ky.; a sister, Anne Schellhorn of Canada; five grandchildren, Hannah (Steve) Vaught, Charles T. (Cathy) Hughes, Nathaniel (Christina) Hughes, John D. Williams, and Thomas H. Williams; and two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Seth Vaught.

Funeral services were held May 28 at the W.R. Milward Mortuary-Broadway, with Interment in Lexington Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church, 180 East Maxwell St., Lexington, Ky. 40508.

Carol Williams
2000-08-03

Carol Williams, 79, a former summer resident of Sawyer's Island, Boothbay, died July 7 in Olney, Maryland, after several years coping with Alzheimer's disease. She had resided at a nursing home in Maryland since 1994.

She was born December 24, 1920 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Mrs. Williams was a lyric dramatic soprano. She received her initial musical training in piano and voice in Tulsa. She was awarded an Opera Scholarship at Louisiana State University, studying under Pasquale Amato of the Metropolitan Opera. She later studied for many years with Royal Dadmun of Boston and Hartford.

Mrs. Williams appeared in several operas, oratorios, concerts and musical comedies and with many symphony orchestras throughout New England, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana and Washington. She held many sole church positions throughout the country.

She was the wife of the late Joseph Williams, who died in 1978.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley L. Chamberlain of Sawyer's Island, Boothbay; a son, J. Mills Williams of Brookeville, Maryland; a granddaughter, Kirsten Williams; and a grandson, Joe Williams.

Muriel C. Wilson
1999-09-30

Muriel C. Wilson, 92, of Trevett, formerly of Wakefield, Mass., died Friday, September 24 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born June 23, 1907, in Everett, Mass., she was the daughter of Alfred and Annie Mackay Chisholm.

Mrs. Wilson was a graduate of Malden High School in Malden, Mass. In 1934, she married James Wilson; they lived in Malden and Wakefield, Mass. She was a homemaker, who loved to sew, read and play cards. She was an active member of the Wakefield Congregational Church for 39 years and the American Red Cross. In 1995 she moved to Maine, and in 1997 she made her home at the Hodgdon Island Inn in Trevett, with her son, Peter.

Mrs. Wilson is predeceased by her husband, James Wilson.

Survivors include one son, Peter Wilson of Trevett; one daughter, Carolyn Redmond of Newburyport, Mass.; three granddaughters, Andrea Wilson of Reading, Mass., Susan Harlocker of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Julia Richardson of Jamestown, Rhode Island; one great-grandson, Samuel Hardlock of Santa Fe, New Mexico; and special friend, Peter Moran of Trevett.

A graveside service was held at the Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden, Mass., on Tuesday, September 28 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests books be donated in her name to your local library.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Route 27, Boothbay.

Eldred C. Wilson
1999-02-18

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Eldred C. Wilson, 58, of Bryant Pond, died February 12, 1999, in Poughkeepsie, NY at the Vassar Brother's Hospital, where he had been a patient.

Born in Woodstock on September 13, 1940, he was the son of the late Everell C. and Elsie May (Wilson) Wilson. He attended Forrest-Dale School in Woodstock prior to moving to Florida and attending Forest Lake Academy in Forest City, FL.

A self-employed carpenter, Mr. Wilson enjoyed all aspects of carpentry, especially finish work. He was able to perform finish work many times in the homes that he remodeled.

A 20 year member of the Dixfield Seventh Day Adventist Church, he had resided in Bryant Pond for over 20 years, coming from Florida.

Surviving are a son, Shawn, of Bryant Pond; a brother, Melvin, and his wife, Jean, of West Paris; two sisters, Merlene, and her husband, Conrad Ising, of Debary, FL and Coralie and her husband, Dom Villable, of Poughkeepsie, NY; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Predeceasing Eldred was a son, Dale.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at at the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock. Interment will be in the spring at the Tuell Town Cemetery, West Paris.

Scott Wilson
2000-09-28

Scott Wilson, 68, of Boothbay Harbor, died Wednesday, September 20, after a short illness, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born on February 7, 1932, he was the son of Nathaniel and Margery Lamb Wilson.

Mr. Wilson graduated from Hallowell High School in the Class of 1950. He worked for Central Maine Power for 25 years and was district manager for Belfast, Newcastle, and Augusta. In the summers he was a charter boat captain aboard the Elizabeth W. He then became a lobster fisherman and retired after 15 years.

He was instrumental in the development of the Belfast Harbor Committee and was very active in fund-raising for the Boy Scouts of America. He worked on the construction of the Boothbay Harbor Fisherman's Memorial, and had been an active Rotarian Little League coach and former registered Maine Guide.

Mr. Wilson was predeceased by his sister, Martha McCullum in 1988.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Boothbay Harbor; three sons, Kevin Homans Wilson and his wife Michelle of Boothbay Harbor, Keith Nathaniel Wilson and his wife Deanna of Sarasota, Florida, and Michael and Kathleen Dekker of Dresden; two daughters, Elizabeth Grace Wilson of Haines, Alaska and Michelle and Christopher Donahue of Portland, Conn.; seven grandchildren; one nephew; one niece; and one cousin.

A memorial service was held Monday, September 25 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Donations may be made in Mr. Wilson's memory to the Fisherman's Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 304, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Everett Sanford Winchenbach
2000-02-03

Everett Sanford Winchenbach, 84, of Waldoboro, died Jan. 26 at his home.

He was born Sept. 18, 1915 in Waldoboro, the son of Fred and Lorna Staples Winchenbach. He was a 1932 graduate of the Old Waldoboro High School. After graduation he worked at the Tar Gang, Samples Ship Yard, Boothbay Harbor, and the Waldoboro Ford garage.

In 1942 he enlisted in the Army, serving in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. For 24 months he drove a truck with the 45th Evacuation Hospital in the European Theatre. He was awarded the Good Conduct and Victory Medals, and European African Middle Eastern and American Theater Campaign Ribbons.

In 1949 he married Ruth McLellan. They have made their home in Dutch Neck for the past 50 years. He worked for Keith Winchenbach’s hardware store and for Storer Lumber from 1965 until he retired in 1991.

Every year Everett marched in the Waldoboro Memorial Day Parade, proud to be wearing his original uniform. He was a big supporter of Medomak Valley sports, attending all the home games.

Everett was an active selectman. He was a member of the King Solomon Lodge #61; Lifetime member of the VFW Soule/Shuman Post #4525; American Legion, Charles C. Lily Post #149; Past Master Meenahga Grange #555; and Seventh Degree member of the State Pomona Grange.

He was a member of the German Meeting House Church Society and the Methodist Church in Waldoboro, and St. Paul’s Church Society in Dutch Neck.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Rosemarie Winchenbach.

Everett is survived by his wife of 50 years; sons Sanford of Waldoboro and Aaron of Beacon Falls, Conn.; daughters Jessica Sprowl and husband Larry of Chesapeake, Va. and Katrina Winchenbach of Portland; brother Russell of Yarmouth; grandson Derek Gifford of Waldoboro; grandchildren Amanda, Hannah and Ethan Thorndike of Chesapeake, Va., and Maggie Zall of Portland; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours: Jan. 30, 6-8 p.m., Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Grange service: Jan. 30 at Hall’s. Funeral: Jan. 31, 1 p.m., United Methodist Church, Friendship Rd., Waldoboro, Rev. Robert Dorr officiating. Burial: In the spring. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: United Methodist Church Music Fund, PO Box 354, Waldoboro 04572.
