Alvin Maynard Winslow, Jr.
2000-12-28

Alvin Maynard Winslow, Jr., 57, passed Sat., Dec. 23, at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta.

Alvin was born September 3, 1943 in Camden, the son of Alvin and Arlene Johnson Winslow, Sr.

He grew up in Rockland and attended Rockland schools graduating from Rockland High School. After high school he attended Maine Maritime Academy and later joined the U.S. Navy. During his time in the Navy, he traveled around the world twice and was honorably discharged in 1970.

He continued working on big ships in Norfolk, Va.

in 1985 he and his wife Jean moved to Vinalhaven and lived there until 1992. He was considered “jack of all trades” including being a lobsterman while on Vinalhaven; they then made their home in Nobleboro.

His hobbies included making traps, re-fiber glassing lobster boats and taking apart engines.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He loved animals and donated to an animal shelter. Once he rescued a baby pigeon that he found overboard and named her Pete. He kept her for eight years and when he would come home, driving up the driveway, Pete would recognize the vehicle and would fly to meet him and ride back with him to the house. She traveled everywhere with him. He had a companion dog named King.

He is predeceased by his son Brian Alvin Winslow (1987).

He is survived by his wife Jean Winslow of Nobleboro, sons, Jason Winslow and wife Cassie of Okinawa, Japan, Shawn Winslow and wife Sara of Falmouth, daughter, Errin Kealee of N.Y., stepdaughters, Laura Sanborn and her companion Paul Griffin of Waldoboro, Debbie Winchenbach and husband Dana of Waldoboro, Lynn Goss and husband Carl of Vinalhaven, Cathy Gilbert and husband, Leroy of Waldoboro, stepsons, David Sanborn and wife Charlene of Waldoboro, Sheldon Sanborn of Waldoboro, sisters, Helen Hanretty and husband Hugh of New York, Eunice Demott of New York, Thelma Decker of New York, Jean Rose of Endfield, Judy Prior of Cushing, brother, Donald Woods of Endfield, Conn., Bruce Winslow of Friendship, half brother, Bobby Winslow of Norfolk, Va., half sister, Diane Winslow of Rockland, 16 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, many aunts, uncles and cousins and special friend Alice Standish and Henry LaRosa of Nobleboro.

Visiting hours 12-1 p.m. on Dec. 26, at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.

Funeral service 1 p.m., Dec. 26, at Hall Funeral Home. Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Eileen Dullea Wood
1999-06-10

PARIS - Eileen Dullea Wood, 87, died Tuesday morning, June 8, 1999, at Market Square Healthcare Facility.

Born in Norway on June 12, 1911, she was the daughter of Addie (Canwell) and Daniel Francis Dullea. She attended school through the eighth grade at the Norway Lake School and graduated from Norway High School in the class of 1929. Throughout her high school years she excelled at the sport of basketball.

She was a life-long, beloved resident of the Norway Lake neighborhood.

Mrs. Wood worked for the J.J. Newberry Co. for 45 years and held the distinction of being one of the only two female managers of a J.J. Newberry Store in Maine. Early in her career her duties were varied: she checked freight, stocked shelves and shoveled coal. In 1955 she became the store's manager. She was respected as an astute business woman, a fair employer and she is credited with saving many a young shoplifter from a life of crime with her strong, stern lectures. During World War II, she was trained as an ambulance driver with the American Red Cross Motor Corps.

Active in sports all her life, she was an excellent golfer, bowling league member and in later years became an avid bingo player. Since its inception, she was a member of the organizing committee of the Norway High School Alumni Association.

Mrs. Wood is survived by her daughter, Patricia and son-in-law, Holger Pulkkinen, of South Paris; three grandchildren, Jody Pulkkinen of Norway, Joan Blackwell and husband, Jim of Tampa, FL, and Joel Pulkkinen and wife, Linda of South Woodstock; and four very special great-grandchildren, Jason, Jillian, Juliette and Laina and step-greatgrandchildren,Taneli and Siiri.

A Memorial Service will be held for Eileen Dullea Wood on Friday, June 11 at 1:30 p.m. at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway.

In lieu of flowers those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimers Association Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101.

Gail B. Woodward
1999-08-26

Gail G. Woodward, 68, of Coopers Mills, died Sun., Aug. 22 at her home.

She was born in Augusta, a daughter of John T. and Carrie Chase Grimshaw, and attended local schools.

She married Edwin A. Woodward on Aug. 19, 1949 and worked as a medical assistant for Doctors Darlington and Mohlar, and then at Sheepscot Valley Medical Center.

Her hobbies included knitting and crafts.

Mrs. Woodward was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Augusta, Rainbow Girls, and DeMolay.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years; a son, Michael Woodward of El Paso, Tex.; a daughter, Brenda Lee Hall of Presque Isle; a brother, Stanley Grimshaw of Waterville; three sisters, Marjorie Dennett of Augusta, Jane Cunningham of Hallowell, and Dorothy Hart of Wilton; and three grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Aug. 25 at Maine Veteran's Memorial cemetery with the Rev. Deborah Tate Breault officiating.

Frederick W. Wormelle, Jr.
1999-12-30

Frederick W. Wormelle, Jr., 83, a longtime resident of Falmouth, Mass. died Dec. 20 at the Royal Megansett Nursing Home after a long illness.

Mr. Wormelle was born and raised in Brockton, Mass., the son of the late Dr. Frederick W. and Edith Wormelle. He graduated from Brockton High School in 1934.

He and his wife, Beatrice, who died in 1998, moved to Falmouth in 1939 and purchased Hoyt’s Boatyard, which was renamed to Falmouth Marine Railway, Inc. Under his leadership, Falmouth Marine Railway soon became well known in the boating industry for its custom yacht restoration and repairs. In 1958 Mr. Wormelle built the Flying Bridge Restaurant on Falmouth Harbor. The combination of these services on Falmouth Harbor made it a popular boating destination on the East Coast. Both businesses were sold in 1982.

Mr. Wormelle was a member and Past Master of the Marine Lodge, AF and AM in Falmouth. He was a founding member of the Waterways Committee, and served on the Finance Committee. He was a director of the Falmouth National Bank, which was later purchased by Bank of Boston. He was also one of the original organizers and a director of the Damariscotta Bank & Trust Company in Damariscotta from 1971 to 1980.

He is survived by two daughters, Jeanne Wormelle, now of Sarasota, Fla., who was a longtime resident of Nobleboro, and Gail Nacios of Wayne, Penn.; two sons, Fred P. Wormelle of Falmouth and James L. Wormelle of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren

Memorial service: Dec. 28, 1 p.m., First Congregational Church, 68 Main St., Falmouth, Mass. Visiting: Dec. 27, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main St., Falmouth.

Donald Alton Wotton, Sr.
2001-03-08

Donald Alton Wotton, Sr., 68, New Harbor, passed away at the Maine Veterans Hospital on March 4, due to various lung diseases. born in New Harbor on March 29, 1932, he was the son of Harold and Doris (Gilbert) Wotton.

Mr. Wotton spent 20 years in the United States Navy, serving in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. While in the Navy, he made three trips around Antarctica before retiring in 1970 with four Good Conducts.

Upon retiring from the Navy, he spent 10 years working as a lobsterman. During that time, he was one of the original founders of the New Harbor Co-op. Upon the end of his lobstering career, he opened the Wotton’s Fish market, and later the Wotton’s Redemption Center, both of which he owned and operated.

In recent years, his grandchildren were his greatest joy, but he always found time to converse with the local Maine natives. Mr. Wotton was a member of the Bristol Masonic Lodge, the Bristol Redmen, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, as well as the American Legion. Wells-Hussey Post #42, Damariscotta.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Wotton of New Harbor; sons, James Sanders and wife Roxanne of Frankfort, Shawn Sanders and wife Vicky of Pittsburgh, Penn., and Donald A. Wotton, Jr. and wife Rebecca of Bristol; daughters, Laura E. McGeechan and husband John of Detroit, Heidi Jo Leeman and husband Eric of New Harbor, and Dawn Rodowicz of North Falmouth, Mass., brothers, Carroll Wotton of Bristol, Raymond Wotton of Miriden, Conn., and Clinton Wotton of York, sisters, Laura Smith of Lake Ronkonkoma, NY, Barbara Perkins of Franfort, and Marilyn Doe of Winterport, 10 grandchildren, local grandchildren include: Merritt and Mitchel Wotton, Dalton and Cole Leeman, Michael Sanders and Kyle McGeechan; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Harold (Buster) Wotton II.

Gathering of family and friends at Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, on March 8, at 5 p.m., service to follow 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Harbor First Responders, New Harbor, 04554, or the Bristol Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Geraldene K. Wright
1999-11-25

Geraldene K. Wright, 92, of Bristol, known throughout Lincoln County as "The Cat Lady", died Nov. 17, at Miles Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 15, 1906, in Council Bluffs, Ia., she was the daughter of William F. and Bertha Anne (Wilkins) Kemp.

Following her marriage to Elliott Wright in the 1920's, the couple resided in Summit, NJ until her husband's illness in the 1960's. They retired to their home on the Harrington Road and she soon became known throughout the region as The Cat Lady. She would take in any and all stray cats, most with illnesses, or deformities and nurse many of them back to health. At the time of her death, Mrs. Wright had nineteen cats living with her.

Mr. Wright pre-deceased her.

She does leave a sister, Gwendolene Paulson and a nephew, Everett William Paulson, both of Largo, Fla.; as well as several grandnephews.

At her request, services and Interment will be private. Donations may be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, Box 7, Edgecomb, Me. 04556. Arrangements are under the direction of the Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.

Kenwood Wright
2000-08-31

Kenwood Calvin Wright Sr., 73, of Whitefield, died Tuesday, August 29 at his residence.

He was born in Newcastle on March 23, 1927, the son of Cecil G. and Bertha E. (Newell) Wright. He attended North Newcastle, Jefferson, Whitefield, and Lincoln Schools. He was employed by Alton Libby Sawmill in Whitefield.

On December 15, 1945 he married Virginia E. Bailey. He owned and operated a trucking company and also hauled pulp. Mr. Wright was employed by Paul Hilton's Dairy Farm in Alna. He was also employed at Goudy and Stevens Shipyard in East Boothbay where he was involved in building the replica of the ship America. Mr Wright was later employed as a truck driver by Ivan Shaw Construction in Woolwich for several years. He was employed by Wiscasset Fuel in 1974. Mr Wright drove a school bus in Alna for eight years and also drove the truck for Jack Shaw Construction in Woolwich, retiring in 1995.

He was an active member, trustee, and Deacon of the Newcastle-Alna Baptist Church in Alna.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren, and participating in church activities. Mr. Wright also enjoyed bird watching and was an animal lover.

He is survived by his wife Virginia E. Wright of Whitefield; three daughters, Cheryl A. Hillman of Whitefield, Deborah E. Hart of Whitefield, and Rebecca E. Lackey of Kansas City, Kan.; two brothers, Douglas G. Wright of Whitefield and Hugh H. Wright of Whitefield; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchild-ren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three sons, Kenwood Wright Jr. in 1992, Steven Wright in 1948, and Danny Wright in 1951, and also by his sister, Evelyn Wood in 1976.

Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset. A Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, September 1 at the Newcastle-Alna Baptist Church in Alna with Pastor Rick Newell officiating. Burial will follow in the Alna Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Newcastle-Alna Baptist Church, 790 Town House Road, Whitefield, 04353.

Robert P. Walbridge
2001-06-07

Robert P. Walbridge, 88, of Boothbay Harbor, died Monday, June 4.

Born on December 5, 1912 in St. Louis, Missouri, he was the son of Merrell and Bess Niederlander Walbridge. He was educated at the Deerfield Academy and was a member of the Amherst College, Class of 1936.

On May 13, 1939, he married Estelle (Emer) Emerson in Longmeadow, Mass. They made their home in Suffield, Conn., and Gilbert & Baker of West Springfield, Mass. employed him for 11 years.

In 1948, Mr. and Mrs. Walbridge moved their family to Boothbay Harbor. He and his brother, Kenneth started Walbridge Bros. Plumbing and Heating which was originally operated out of his basement on Union Street. They purchased land on Route 27 and put up their first building in 1951 on what later became the site of Poole Bros. Lumber.

In 1956, the family moved to Landing Road in Southport. He served as the Building Inspector for the Town of Southport in the first seven years of the Zoning Ordinance.

Mr. Walbridge was very active in the community. He served as President of the Boothbay Harbor Chamber of Commerce, Honorary Trustee of the YMCA and on the Advisory Board of St. Andrews Hospital. He was also a member of the Rotary, Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club and Southport Yacht Club. He was a founding member of the Wawenock Power Squadron. He was one of the original drivers for Meals On Wheels and continued his service to the organization for 15 years. He was also active in the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor, becoming an Honorary Deacon after 28 years of service.

In April of 2000, he moved to an apartment at the St. Andrews Village.

Mr. Walbridge was predeceased by his wife in 1990.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan Marvin and her husband Andy of Boothbay Harbor, and Penny Bergeson and her husband David of West Boylston, Mass.; four grandchildren, Dean Marvin of Somerville, Mass., Robert Bergeson of Randolph, Vt., Nancy Duffley of Plymouth, Mass., and Michael Bergeson of Newton, Mass.; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Bergeson and Lauren Bergeson, both of Randolph, Vt., and Emily Duffley of Plymouth, Mass.; one brother, Kenneth Merrell Walbridge of Hodgdon Island; and one sister, Peggy Hutchins of Andover, Mass.

A memorial service (Celebration of His Life) was held Wednesday, June 6 at the Congregational Church in Boothbay Harbor. Rev. Peter Baldwin Panagore officiated.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, 11 Howard Street, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements were made by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

Charles O. Webber
2001-07-26

Charles O. Webber, 77, of Westport Island, died Thursday, July 19 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in Roslindale, Mass., he was a son of Charles J. and Veretta E. Derby Webber.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as a tail gunner on a B-17.

Mr. Webber was an engineer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. Upon his retirement in 1985, he and his family moved to Westport, where they had vacationed for many years.

He was a member of the Billerica. Mass., Lodge of Masons, and enjoyed spending time with his family. His interests included hunting, fishing and boating.

Surviving are his wife, Muriel F. Weisel Webber; one son, Gary C. of Westport; two brothers, Robert of East Bridgewater, Mass., and Irving of Woburn, Mass.; two sisters, Esther Foster of Middletown, Conn., and Marion Burtt of Conway, N.H.; two grandsons; and two great-grandchild-ren.

There will be no service. Burial will take place in Webber Family cemetery in Westport, at a later date. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis and Hill Funeral Home in Bath.
