Laura A. Whitman
2003-09-11

Laura A. Whitman, 88, of Auburn died Sunday, August 31 at Clover Health Care, Auburn.

Born in Boothbay Harbor, October 3, 1914, she was the daughter of Charles and Ellen (Hodgdon) Chapman. She attended Boothbay schools, and was a 1931 graduate of Boothbay Harbor High School. She then went on to attend the Central Maine General Nursing School in Lewiston where she graduated in 1937.

After graduating from nursing school, she married W. Kenneth Whitman in 1940 and then lived in Auburn for the remainder of her life, having worked as a nursing supervisor at Central Maine General and retiring at Central Maine Medical Center in 1980.

Following retirement, Mrs. Whitman enjoyed traveling and belonged to many organizations. She was a life member of the Pine Cone Chapter 26 of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of the High Street Congregational Church.

Survivors include one son, William and his wife, Barbara Whitman of Reading, Mass.; two grandchildren, Kristina Knauer of Tucson, Ariz. and Scott Whitman of Newington, Conn.; two great-grandchildren, both of Tucson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Whitman in 1955.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 4, 10 a.m., in the Gallagher Room at Gracelawn Memorial Park with Reverend Paul Martz officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the CMMC School of Nursing Alumni Association, 70 Lowell St., Lewiston, ME 04240 in Mrs. Whitman's memory.

Audrey S. Whitten
2003-02-13

Audrey (Sawyer) Whitten of Boston, Boothbay Harbor and Stuart, Florida, (formerly of Winchester, Mass. and Mountain Lakes, N.J.) died at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass. Thursday, February 6, after a long illness.

Born in New York City July 6, 1923, she was the daughter of Janith (Bancker) and Elwood Sawyer.

Mrs. Whitten worked as a realtor for 25 years, starting at her father's company in Mountain Lakes, N.J. and retired from The Heritage Development Group, headquartered in Connecticut.

She was a member of The Mayflower Societies of New York and Massachusetts as a descendant of William Bradford, the first Governor of Plymouth Colony, and was also descended from other early and prominent New England and New York families.

Survivors include her husband, George D. Whitten; three children, Robert P. Miller Jr. of Ipswich, Stephen A. Miller of Woburn and Pamela M. Lingel of Cambridge, all in Massachusetts; three stepchildren, G. Robinson Whitten of Portland, Charles D. Whitten of Ipswich, Mass., and Amy W. Ryan of Stillwater, Minn.; six grandchildren; one sister, Ellen S. Ivey, and one brother, William B. Sawyer, both of Houston, Texas.

A memorial service was held at the First Congregational Church in Winchester, Mass. on Tuesday, February 11.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Brigham & Women's Pulmonary Division, Brigham & Women's Hospital Development Office, 116 Huntington Ave., 6th Floor, Boston, MA 02116.

David M. Wilson Jr.
2003-10-30

David M. Wilson Jr., 42, of North Providence, R.I., a computer analyst, died Wednesday, October 22 at his home from Lou Gehrig's disease.

Born in Lancaster, Penn., on May 31, 1961, he was a son of Jean (Rote) Rohrer of Boothbay, and Lancaster, Penn., and David M. Wilson of Lancaster, Penn.

He attended schools in Lancaster and Manheim Twp. before earning is GED. He also graduated from Lehigh Data Processing Institute in Wyomissing.

Mr. Wilson was awarded the Brian Dickinson Courage Award and statewide recognition in Rhode Island on May 23, 2000. This award originated to honor Brian Dickinson, a columnist for the Providence Journal-Bulletin who also was determined to live a productive life despite ALS. The disease has no known cure and proved to be fatal within two to five years of diagnosis.

Mr. Wilson was a computer analyst who worked at Hasbro Inc. for several years before becoming the manager of networks systems for A. T. Cross Co. in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

He was lead guitarist in various rock bands in central Pennsylvania and his favorite pastimes were NFL, music and boating in Maine.

Besides his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Suzanne M. Schumann of Lancaster, Penn. and Anne W. Wineholt of Baltimore, Md.; one stepsister, Virginia Rohrer of Orinda, Calif.; a stepmother, Gerry H. Wilson of Lancaster, Penn; stepfather, Richard P. Rohrer Jr. of Maine and Lancaster, Penn; two nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, November 1 at 1 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 119 North Duke St., Lancaster, Penn. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research, c/o John Hopkins Medicine Fund, 100 N. Charles St., Suite 408A, Baltimore, MD 21201.

Richard W. Wilson
2003-06-12

Richard W. Wilson, 78, of Boothbay Harbor and formerly of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, died Tuesday, June 3 at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor. For the past three years, he had been a resident of St. Andrews Village.

Born October 1, 1924, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of Thomas and Mary Knaupe Wilson. He grew up in East Cleveland, Ohio, where he graduated from Shaw High School.

In June 1942, Mr. Wilson began a 41-year career in the Lamp Division at the General Electric Company in Cleveland. During World War II, he served as a sergeant in the Transportation Department of the Army in Germany, France, Belgium and England. In 1946 upon his return, he resumed employment with General Electric, as a lecturer at the Lighting Institute. In 1950, he was transferred to the GE New England sales district in Boston, where he worked as a Sales Promotion Specialist.

Mr. Wilson married Carolyn Warner of Orville, Ohio, December 27, 1952. From 1952 to 1960 they lived in Lexington, Mass. In 1960, Mr. Wilson was transferred to the New York sales district. The family resided in New Canaan, Conn. In 1964, he was transferred to Cleveland, Ohio, where he was Supervisor of Advertising, Media and Research at GE's Nela Park. In 1983, Mr. Wilson retired from GE. In 1993, the Wilson's sold their home of 29 years in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and moved to Boothbay Harbor.

Mr. Wilson was a gifted piano player who loved music and having singalongs with friends. In addition, he loved spending time with family and friends and summering at Ocean Point. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his positive outlook on life.

He was a member of the Simon W. Robinson Masonic Lodge, Lexington, Mass., for over 50 years. Other interests and activities included playing in a Dixieland jazz band, traveling and volunteering his time to many organizations.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Carolyn W. Wilson; three children, Thomas W. Wilson of Boothbay Harbor, Elizabeth W. Roig, of St. Louis, Missouri and Susan W. Kern, of Merrimac, Mass; nine grandchildren, Cullen Wilson of Old Town, Cyrus Wilson of Damariscotta, Morgan Wilson of Boothbay Harbor, Benjamin, Emily and David Roig of St. Louis Missouri and Jack, Caroline, and Sarah Kern of Merrimac, Mass; and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, August 3, at The Wilson Memorial Chapel, Ocean Point, with Rev. Robert Houston officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Maine Chapter, P.O. Box 8730, Portland, ME, 04103.

Beverly A.Winslow
2003-03-20

Beverly A. Winslow, 80, of Mystic, Conn., passed away Wednesday, March 5.

Born in Augusta, on July 20, 1922, she was the daughter of Walter and Freda Pierce.

Mrs. Winslow was the widow of the late Carroll Winslow and lived in Boothbay for most of her life.

Survivors include a daughter, Freda Trafaconda of Waterford, Conn.; a son, David Winslow of Dresden; a brother, Paul Pierce of Mass.; four grandchildren, Angela, Peter, Dawn and Troy; and three great-grandchildren, Cassandra, Andrew and Julia.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 8 at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home in New London, Conn.

A private memorial service will be held at the Veteran's Memorial cemetery later this spring.

Dorothy F. Winters
2003-09-04

Dorothy Fall Blois Winters (1923-2003) of Southport died Wednesday, August 27 at her residence. She was the wife of the late George Rae Winters.

Mrs. Winters was born and raised in Melrose, Massachusetts, graduated from Melrose High School in 1941 and from Academie Modern in Boston in 1944.

Over the years, she worked at the John Hancock Life Insurance Company, the Melrose-Wakefield Trust Company, and retired from the Melrose Health Department in 1984. She and George moved to Chatham, Mass. at that time.

In 1997, they moved to the Boothbay Harbor region where she had vacationed as a child.

She enjoyed cooking and reading, and traveled to Bermuda and Europe several times.

Survivors include one son, John K. Blois and his wife, Ellen, two grandsons, Nathaniel and Christopher, all of Boothbay Harbor; a stepson, Robert Winters of Wrentham, Mass.; and two stepdaughters, Betsy Duncan of Key West, Fla. and Pamela Rice of Seffner, Fla.

Services will be private.

Any memorial contributions may be made to Southport United Methodist Church, Southport, ME 04576.

Marion Black Witt
2003-05-08

Marion Black Witt passed away in her sleep during the night of April 27.

Born Marion Louise Black in Bath on November 1, 1910, she was the daughter of Thomas P. Black, a draftsman at Bath Iron Works, and Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Black. She grew up in Bath and Quincy, Mass. after her father transferred to the Fore River Shipyard. Thomas Black was an original member of the "Chew the Rag Club" of Bath, which summered at Cameron's Point, Southport, just after the turn of the century. Her father built a cottage at Cameron's Point around 1912.

She attended schools in Bath and Quincy and graduated from the Chandler Secretarial School in Boston. She worked in Boston and Washington, D.C. and then, at the outset of World War II, transferred to Bethlehem Shipyard back in Quincy as secretary to Admiral H. T. Smith, who was the U.S. Navy Supervisor of Shipbuilding.

After the war, she went to Shanghai and then Manila where she worked for the U.S. government in the decommissioning of war materials. While in the Philippines, she met and married Daniel Ernest Witt, M.D. ("Ernie"), a lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps.

Dr. and Mrs. Witt returned to the U.S. where Dr. Witt completed his internship and residency at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. They moved to Boothbay Harbor in 1948 for a year while her husband completed his medical training with Dr. Philip Gregory. In 1949, they moved to Dr. Witt's hometown of Bloomsburg, Penn., where he established a medical practice.

Mrs. Witt was a devoted wife to her husband throughout 45 years of marriage and the loving mother of their three sons. She was a true compatriot to Mr. Witt, supporting him in his life-long love of flying and accompanying him, often alone, over several thousand hours of flight time all across North America. After Mr. Witt retired, they spent winters cruising southern waters in their trawler, returning to their cottage on Cameron's Point each summer.

Several years after Mr. Witt's death in 1992, Mrs. Witt became a year-round resident of the Boothbay region, residing at Cameron's Point in the summer and Samoset Road, Boothbay Harbor in the off season. She was an avid bridge player.

Survivors include three sons, Daniel and daughter-in-law Lucinda of Boston, Bruce of Southport and Thomas and daughter-in-law Susan of Boothbay; her granddaughter Abigail and friend Robert George of Boston; her grandson, Christopher of Boston; grandson Samuel; granddaughter Elizabeth; granddaughter Shelley; and her grandson Scott, all of Boothbay.

A service will be held on Saturday, May 10 at 2:30 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made in her memory to the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library.

Suzannah E. Wolf
2003-07-03

Suzannah E. Wolf, 74, of Edgecomb, died at her home Sunday, June 29.

Born June 2, 1929 in Curwensville, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Robert P. and Ruth (Mons) Wolf.

Following her education, Ms. Wolf worked as a medical lab technician and, after coming to Maine, was employed first at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor and later at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

She leaves one brother, Robert P. Wolf Jr., of Ohio.; and many friends throughout the Northeast, with who she kept in touch with until the end.

Private services will be under the care of the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.

Arnie Walker
2003-09-19

Arnie Walker, 38 passed away Monday, September 8, 2003, surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Hartford, Conn., on June 4, 1965 and graduated from Windham High School in 1983.

Arnie worked for the Oliver Stores for nine years specializing in the sales and demonstration of grooming equipment and for R.J. Grondin & Sons for ten years, where he was respected as an excellent heavy equipment operator.

Arnie enjoyed snowmobiling, darts, golfing, boating and was an avid Nascar fan. Skiing and time with friends and family at Jackman and Mitchell Camp in Appleton and Louden, NH.

Arnie loved taking his daughter "Peanut" for rides on the snowmobile and 4-wheeler. They also enjoyed watching Tom & Jerry together. Arnie was a loving husband, father and son, who leaves behind his wife, Dianne Snow Walker; a daughter, Tyla-Ann Walker; parents, Gail Walker and Craig and Dawn Walker, two sisters, Tammy-Jo Walker and Jennifer Cole; and a brother Jeffrey Mongeau, all of Windham. He also leaves behind several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, Gary Snow of Naples; Janet Snow and Jeff Greenstreet of Windham and many close friends.

The Rev. Mark Kuntz officiated. Committal was at Arlington Cemetery, Windham.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Kerry Walter Walsh
2003-08-22

Kerry Walter Walsh, 52, of Portland, formerly of Gray, died August 14, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Portland.

He was born in Gray on April 19, 1952, a son of Walter E. and Louise S. (Morrell) Walsh Meserve. He was a 1970 graduate of Gray-New Gloucester High School.

Mr. Walsh worked for Holiday Inn of Portland I the kitchen, where he has not missed a day of work in his 27 years of employment.

Besides his mother of Standish, he is survived by sisters, Marilyn "Lil" (Walsh) Paguette or Portland and Janet E. Walsh of Standish; a step-brother, Christopher A. Meserve of Standish.

He was predeceased by a brother, Leslie C. Walsh, who died in 1994.

Memorial donations may be made in his name to: Portland Center for Assisted Livings' Activity Fund, 68 Devonshire Street, Portland, Maine 04103.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.
