John W. Washington
2004-09-16

John W. Washington, 79, of Ocean Point Road, East Boothbay, died July 29, 2004 at St. Andrews Hospital.

He was born in New York and was educated at Colby College in Waterville. He spent summers during his youth in North Edgecomb.

Mr. Washington served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and later worked for Pacific Gas and Electric in San Francisco.

After marrying Phyllis Ogg, they made their home in New Jersey where he taught school, and also worked in real estate. Summers, they owned and operated Treasure Island bed and breakfast at Boothbay Shores in East Boothbay.

Following her death a few years ago, he moved to East Boothbay village, and had worked as a tax assessor for the Town of Boothbay.

He is survived by a daughter, Christine, of Oregon.

Friends who wish may gather at the home of Paul and Winnie Sherman at Trail's End, North Edgecomb, on September 18 at 11:30 a.m. Call 882-7064 or 633-4107 for directions.

Gregory Watson
2004-02-13

Gregory Wallace Watson, 44, formerly of Gray, died unexpectedly January 29 while he was on vacation in Tombstone, AZ.

He was born December 6, 1959, in Framington, a son of Wallace R. and Doreen A. (Dyke) Watson. He attended schools in Gray and Ormand Beach, FL.

He worked for the family business at National Pool and Spa, Inc., and also had his own pawnshop business. His hobbies included racing go-carts with his children, which he enjoyed regularly, and his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

He leaves a son, James Wallace Watson, and a daughter, Kayla Rose Watson, both of Searsport; his mother, Doreen, of Gray; a fiancee, Susan Sibley, of Brownville Junction; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. His father, Wallace, predeceased him.

A funeral was held February 6 at Bible Believing Baptist Church, Gray, with Rev. Darwin Vail officiating. Interment will be in the Spring in the Riverside cemetery in Farmington.

Mattie C. Watson
2004-04-22

Mattie Crouse Watson, 101, died Saturday, April 17 at Madigan Estates Nursing Home in Houlton.

Born November 11, 1902, at Zealand, New Brunswick, Canada, she was the third daughter of William and Letta Amelia (Brewer) Crouse.

Mrs. Watson was a resident of Houlton and a member of the Court Street Baptist Church. She worked for several area businesses as well as making hooked rugs, crocheting and knitting many afghans, and devoted many hundreds of hours to RSVP, knitting children's hats and mittens.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Earl Watson, in 1939; and seven brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Marguerite (Watson) Bigelow, Boothbay Harbor, and Marjorie (Watson) Watson and her husband Paul of Atlantic, Iowa; nine grandchildren, including Judy Bruening and her husband Carl of Boothbay Harbor, and James Bigelow and his wife Linda of Salisbury, Mass.; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grand-children; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Dunn Funeral Home in Houlton with the Rev. Arthur Myers officiating. Interment was in the Evergreen cemetery in Houlton.

Arrangements were by Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park Street, Houlton.

Richard B. Weber
2004-06-17

Family and friends celebrated the life of Richard Baker Weber, Ph.D., who died at age 75 on Sunday, June 6. He resided at the Gregory wing, St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor.

Mr. Weber lived a full life as a poet, teacher and father. He was born in Summit, N.J. to Ann Lucille Baker and Thomas N. Rippy on August 15, 1929.

Mr. Weber's first marriage was to Eleanore Jean Macphail. They had three daughters, Julia Lee Garbowski of Brussels, Wis., Karin Macphail Weber of Ontario, Canada and Roberta Laurie Weber Taft of Georgetown, Maine. His second marriage was to Olga Abella. He was very close to his sons-in-law, Eugene Garbowski, Peter Sleggs and Frederick L. Taft. He took great pride and delight in his grandchildren, Rachael, Brent, Kian and Samuel. He also had close relationships with many cousins, in particular Wesley Baker and Jacque Baker.

Mr. Weber's early life experiences including working in Alaska and his military service as a paratrooper in the Army 82nd Airborne Division. He earned his undergraduate degree at Bates College and began graduate studies at the University of Iowa. He completed his doctorate in English literature at the Union Institute at Antioch College in Ohio.

His early teaching years were spent at the Polytechnic Preparatory School, Brooklyn, N.Y.; Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and the University of Louisville, Louisville, Ky. Beginning in 1968, he went to work at Southampton College, Long Island, N.Y., where he taught English literature, American history, and film until his retirement. He was very active in poetry writing and publishing community on Long Island and participated in the Artist in Residence Program at Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He was given numerous awards for his writing. He was also a much beloved mentor to young writers and poets. Mr. Weber was an activist during the civil rights movement and supported environmental causes. He loved to travel and had a special love for Prince Edward Island, Canada where he spent many memorable summers with family and friends.

He is joyously remembered for his abiding wonder and curiosity about life, his gentle patience, kindness, sense of humor, his life-long commitment to literature, his deep love of art, film, and music, and his ability to connect with diverse people.

The family would especially like to thank the caregivers at St. Andrews Village for the excellent care and for extraordinary kindness and loving attention given to Richard Weber during the last months of his life, as well as thank the caregivers and St. Andrews Hospital for the gentle and honorable treatment that he received.

A memorial service will be held later in the summer. Memorial donations may be made to the Bates College Library, c/o Julia Garbowski, 1375 Pit Road, Brussels, WI 54204.

Dr. John C. Wells Jr. M.D.

Dr. John Wells, 79, best known as Jack and affectionately known as Tunbridge, died suddenly on July 19 in Beverly, Mass., surrounded by his three sons and family.

He was the first born of Dr. John Colton Wells and Marion Danforth Wells in New York City. He was educated at the Kent School in Connecticut, Yale University Class of 1945, and University of Rochester Medical School. He served as a Lieutenant physician in the U.S. Navy.

His career began with internship at the Providence City Hospital, and residency at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. He then joined the Navy as a physician and was stationed in Chelsea and South Boston. He was on the staff at Harvard, and did some teaching at Harvard Medical School and Peter Bent Brigham. He practiced most of his career in Weston and Waltham and held many leadership positions including Chief of Medicine, and Chairman of the Executive Committee at the Waltham Hospital. He successfully collaborated affiliations with Harvard and the Brigham, to make Waltham a community teaching hospital.

Dr. Wells moved to Marblehead in 1985 and completed his medical career with the Harvard Community Health in Peabody, Mass. He was honored with the Diamond Service Award. He made great strides in helping with initial applications of personnel computers in medicine in the early '80s.

He especially adored the life of sailing on Cape Cod, the Maine Coast, and Marblehead, Mass. He loved racing with his whole family on the New England One Design and Ocean Racing circuits. In 1975, he initiated the Annual Boothbay Harbor Regatta, a popular venue on the summer racing schedule. This regatta is still going strong and had been renamed the Leukemia Cup.

In 1954, Dr. Wells was invited to Squirrel Island to play in the famous "Hennessey Five Star Orchestra," at its annual August performance. This band was and still is the longest running act in the history of jazz, predating the Duke Ellington Orchestra He and his first wife Ann immediately fell in love with Squirrel Island and the family has been summering there ever since. For almost 50 years he has been the leader and mentor of the Hennessey Band.

Survivors include his wife, Judith B. Wells; one brother, Douglas Bateman Wells and wife Barbara of Chatham; three sons, James Phillips Wells and wife Joan of Andover, Conn., John Colton Wells II and wife Carol of Weston, Mass, and Peter Danforth Wells and wife Isabell of Needham, Mass.; stepchildren, Gordon Russell and wife Sandra of Wellesley, Mass.; and Benjamin Russell of Newburyport, Mass.; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and dogs.

A memorial service will be held at the Old North Church in Marblehead, Mass., Sunday, August 1 at 4 p.m.

Aiyana C. Weymouth
2004-06-03

Aiyana Cheyenne Weymouth, infant daughter of Brian and Rhonda Weymouth of Manchester, N.H. was born and died on May 21, 2004. She weighed 1 pound and was 11 inches long.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Rebecca Lynn on September 8, 2000 and Meghan Nicole on January 21, 2003.

Besides her parents, she is survived by her half-sister Brandi of Nashua, N.H., her maternal grandmother, Patricia Holmes of Brunswick, formerly of Boothbay Harbor; her paternal grandparents, Dale and Tonya Watson of Newport; and her paternal great-grandparents, Royce and Bernice Woodman of Newport.

At the request of the family, there will be no services.

Donations may be made to the March of Dimes, New Hampshire Chapter, 22 Bridge St., Concord, NH 03301 in memory of Aiyana Weymouth.

Evelyn G. Wheeler
2004-07-08

Evelyn G. Wheeler, 81, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2004 in Boothbay Harbor

Born in Melrose, Massachusetts on May 20, 1923, she was the daughter of Herbert and Helen Mildrum Fuller. She grew up in Melrose and Wakefield, Mass.

Mrs. Wheeler was a nurse's aide and a waitress as well as being a homemaker and raising her children. Her family was her main interest and she also loved her cats.

She was a member and the Superintendent of Sunday Schools of the All Saints Episcopal Church in Stoneham, Mass.

Mrs. Wheeler is predeceased by her husband, James L. Wheeler Sr.; sister, Marie Muzzey; and grandson, Hugh Wheeler.

Survivors include two sons, Don H. Wheeler of Boothbay, and James L. Wheeler Jr. of Reno, Nev.; half-sister, Barbara Lewis of Lawrence, Mass.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

At the request of the family, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay, Maine.

William B. Whitfield
2004-06-10

William Burgess Whitfield, retired pharmacist and business owner, 87, of Wiscasset, died Monday, June 7 in Damariscotta.

Born December 10, 1916, he was the son of John and Jennie Whitfield of Palmer, Massachusetts.

Mr. Whitfield attended one year at WPI before joining the United States Navy in 1938 where he served in the Pacific Theater of W.W.II on the U.S.S. Flying Fish, which was one of the first submarines to enter the Sea of Japan.

On October 18, 1947 he married Bernice May Slattery. He retired from the Navy as Chief Petty Officer in 1958 and in 1962 he graduated from the University of Connecticut's School of Pharmacy with his degree in Pharmacy.

Mr. and Mrs. Whitfield moved to Wiscasset in 1963, with their two children, Debra and Stephen. They owned and operated both Whitfield Drug Store and Whitfield Motel and Cabins until they retired in 1991.

He was elected to the Wiscasset Budget Committee in 1976 and was an active member of the Wiscasset Fire Society since 1968. Mr. Whitfield was an avid follower of his granddaughter's (Sarah) sports as well as an enthusiast for Ballroom Dancing with his wife. He loved animals, fine automobiles, and walks in the woods.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Bernice May Whitfield; children, Debra Bergeron and her husband Maurice of Florida and Stephen Whitfield and his wife Janet of Wiscasset; granddaughters, Samantha Bishop and her husband Roy of Florida and Sarah Whitfield of Wiscasset; sister-in-law Barbara Kowal; niece Beverly Kennedy and her husband Greg; grandnieces Michelle and Robin, all of Massachusetts.

There will be no visiting hours. A private graveside service will be held at Greenlawn cemetery on Friday, June 11. A "Celebration of Life" will be held at First Congregational Church of Wiscasset UCC, 28 High Street on Friday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m., where the family will receive friends and guests. Rev. Hal Tucker will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations an be made to the Wiscasset High School All Sports Boosters, c/o Wiscasset High School, Gardiner Road, Wiscasset, ME 04578, or Wiscasset Fire Society, c/o Charles DiPerri, Church Street, Wiscasset, ME 04578.

Orin Whitney, 88
2004-08-06

Orin Colley Whitney, 88, of 198 Gray Rd., Gray, passed away at his home on July 28, 2004, where he was born July 11, 1916, a son of Fred and Reina (Colley) Whitney. He grew up in Gray and lived in the same house all his life. He graduated from Pennell Institute in 1934.

He was a poultry farmer at his residence for over 50 years and a postal carrier until his retirement in 1982. He served on various boards for the Town of Gray. He was a member of the Cumberland County Soils Conservation Board, the Farm Bureau, I.O.O.F. &. Rebecca Lodges for 65 years, a Grange member for over 25 years and he had belonged to the First Universalist Church of Yarmouth since 1968.

Orin loved square dancing and traveling in his retirement.

He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Reina Whitney, and a great-granddaughter, Cassondra Leigh Sullivan.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Edna Hawkes Whitney; sister Elizabeth Megquier of Freeport; sons Donald and Fred of Gray; and daughter Aubine Dingwell of Orlando, Florida; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was be held on Tuesday at the First Universalist Church of Yarmouth; Reverend Erik Wikstrom officiated.

Mildred J. B. Wilder
2004-06-03

Mildred June (Baxter) Wilder, 88, wife of Earl P. Wilder, of Portsmouth, N.H., died Monday, May 31 at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

Born in Somerville, Massachusetts on June 29, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Charles H. and Maude Mary (Thompson) Baxter. She was a graduate of Somerville High School, Class of 1933; Fisher Business School, Somerville, Mass., Class of 1934; and Forsyth Dental School, Boston, Mass., Class of 1935. Mrs. Wilder was the editor of the yearbook for Forsyth that year.

She was a practicing dental hygienist for the State of New Hampshire and brought the state fluoride program to Portsmouth area schools. She also was President of the Haven School PTA for many years, served on the Girl Scout Council, and was President of the PHS parent music organization.

Mrs. Wilder loved playing the piano, everything from classical to Christmas carols to Scott Joplin's ragtime favorites. She was a member of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth for over 50 years, a member of the Ann Judson Women's Group and taught Sunday school. She helped with Church dinners, the annual pancake breakfast and was editor of the Middle Street Baptist Church Cookbook. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge in Somerville, Mass. and the Republican Club. She enjoyed organizing neighborhood parties, reading, and traveling. She was a lifelong summer resident of Southport, spending many summers at the Baxter/Wilder cottage on Thompson Hill overlooking Townsend Gut.

She was predeceased by her brother, Dr. Ralph Baxter of Littleton, Mass.

Besides her husband of 65 years, survivors include her three children, Richard C. Wilder of Portsmouth, Suzanne W. Cleveland of Manchester, N.H., and David E. Wilder of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, N.H. on Thursday, June 3. She will be buried in Decker cemetery on Southport.
