Dottie Marie Williams
2004-10-21

Dottie Marie Williams, 63, of Edgecomb, died Friday, October 15, at the Senior Rehabilitation Center in Brunswick after a long illness.

Mrs. Williams was born December 23, 1940 in Hallowell, a daughter of Joseph L. and Edith Wheeler Holbrook, and grew up in Booth-bay Harbor and Edgecomb, attending local schools.

A homemaker, she raised her children and also took care of other children in her home.

For 20 years, she worked at the Shop 'n Save, retiring in 2002.

She enjoyed going for rides, going out to eat, visiting Ocean Point, and loved spending time with her granddaughter.

Survivors include her daughter, Sherba Sibley and her husband Jay; and one granddaughter, Shaylee Sibley, all of Edgecomb; one brother, Al Dunton and his wife Terry of Maine and Florida; and one sister, Marjorie Thompson of Florida.

No public services are planned.

Due to her granddaughter's premature birth, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Maine Medical Center, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, c/o Development Department, 22 Bramhall St. Portland, ME. 04102, in Mrs. Williams' memory.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Margerie S. Williams
2004-01-22

Margerie S. Williams, 61, of Boothbay, passed away Wednesday, January 14 at her residence with her family by her side.

Born in Boothbay on March 15, 1942, she was a daughter of Harland and Sylvia Poor Bryer, and attended Boothbay schools.

Mrs. Williams was employed as a chambermaid with several Boothbay area hotels. She enjoyed feeding the birds, working in her flower garden, and loved all kinds of animals, especially her dog Brandy.

She is predeceased by her sister, Beatrice Orne.

Survivors include long-time companion, Ed Thompson; one son, Randy Williams, of Boothbay; three daughters, Debora Andrews of Boothbay Harbor, Laurie Poore of Boothbay, and Ronda Williams of Brunswick; two brothers, Merrill Bryer of Nobleboro, Clarence Bryer of Bradford; three sisters, Louise Poole of Rockport, Mass. Mable Fowler of Ipswich, Mass. and Priscilla McMahan of Florida; and three grandchildren.

At the request of the family there will be no services.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

Ruth F. Witham
2004-03-25

Ruth F. Witham, 87, of Nobleboro, died Friday, March 19, at Miles Memorial Hospital.

Born in Boothbay Harbor, June 5, 1916, she was the daughter of Frank and Angie Farnham.

Graduating from Boothbay Harbor High School in the Class of 1933, she married Harold I. Witham June 3, 1936. She and her husband moved to Nobleboro following marriage, and became active in the community throughout their lives.

For 18 years, Mrs. Witham served as Tax Collector/Treasurer for the town of Nobleboro, and for many years their home was the official fire- call house for fire emergencies. She served on the Board of Selectmen for the town and was active with the Nobleboro Civic Club, as well as a longtime member of the Dyers Valley Grange.

Mr. Witham predeceased his wife November 8, 1993.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty-Jean Wright and husband Chester and a son, Weston Witham and wife, Diane, all of Nobleboro; two sisters, Ivern Higgins of Bath, and Ella Wagstaff of Boothbay; four grandchildren, Dale Wright and wife Kathy, Jean Wright, Christopher Witham and his wife Tammy, and Joleen Witham; seven great-grand-children, Matthew, Sarah and Katie Eugley, Neil, Kyle, Kerk Wright and Andrew Walton; three step-grand-children, Kelli, Cori and Kevin Lewis; and several nieces and nephews

A service to celebrate her life was held Tuesday, March 22 at the chapel of Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta with Pastor Bob Wyand officiating. She was laid to rest with her husband at the Highland Cemetery, immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Calvin Dennis Wright
2004-11-11

Calvin D. Wright, 53, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Bristol on Monday, November 8.

Born in Damariscotta on April 4, 1951, he was the son of Earl and Dorothy (Gamage) Wright.

Mr. Wright graduated from Lincoln Academy in Newcastle, and shortly after graduating, went to work as an electrician for Bath Iron Works. In 1975 he entered the United States Navy where he served for four years. Upon leaving the Navy, he went back to work for Bath Iron Works where he remained for about 20 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.He never strayed far from the ocean and enjoyed racing both cars and boats. After leaving BIW, he continued his hobby of working on cars which fulfilled his passion for automobiles.

Survivors include his parents of South Bristol; his wife of nine years, Melanie McLellan of Bristol and Boothbay; two daughters, Kerry Surette of Augusta, and Rachelle Wright of Bath; five siblings, Phyllis Cotton of South Portland, Phillip Wright of Newcastle, Lorraine Tanguay of Albany Township, Norman Wright of South Bristol and Julie Kaplinger of South Bristol; five grandchildren, Taylor, Brendan, Calleigh, Siobahn and Cameron Surette; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, Warren Earl Wright.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, November 12 from 6-8 p.m. at the Strong Funeral Home and Memorial Center. A funeral will be held on Saturday, November 13 at the Union Congregational Church in South Bristol at 10 a.m.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong Funeral Home and Memorial Center, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Calvin Wright Memorial Fund, c/o Damariscotta Bank & Trust, P.O. Box 999, Damariscotta, ME 04543; or to the Union Congregational Church, P.O. Box 59, South Bristol, ME 04568.

Barbara S. Westhaver
2004-12-23

Barbara S. Westhaver, of Bristol, passed away Tuesday, December 14, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Born August 12, 1919, in Beverly, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Myron and Mae (Oliver) Small.

In 1982 she retired from GTE Sylvania and following her retirement, operated the This and That Antique Shop in Bristol, until 2002. In her spare time she enjoyed hooking rugs.

Mrs. Westhaver was a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Bristol Mills Congregational Church.

Her husband, Eldon, predeceased her in 1989.

Survivors include by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bob Tibbetts of Bristol; her son and daughter-in-law, Eldon and Debbie Westhaver of Cardington, Ohio; one granddaughter, Rachel of Bristol; four grandsons, Bill of Concord, New Hampshire, Brett, Thad and Kyle of Round Pond; her step-grandson, Mark of Gray; two great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was laid to rest with a private graveside service at the Bristol Mills Cemetery.

If desired, donations may be made to the Bristol First Responders, 104 Southside Road, New Harbor, ME 04554, or the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements were entrusted to the care and direction of the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Damariscotta.

Virginia B. Wood
2005-01-20

Virginia Brown Wood, died at her home in Newcastle on Saturday January 15.

Born June 17, 1921 in So. Bristol, she was a daughter of Ralph and Lena R. Brown.

Mrs.Wood was predeceased by her husband, David W. Wood; a sister, Arlene Ronning; and by her brother, Willard Brown.

Survivors include a son, Eric M. Wood, and daughter-in-law, Mary L. Wood, both of Boothbay; one daughter, Rachel E. Wood of Newcastle; grandchildren, Justin David Wood and Allison Kate Wood, both of Boothbay; sisters, Eleanor Sherman of Richmond and Dorothy Penniman of New Harbor.

A private service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

H. Paul Wagstaff
2005-10-13

H. Paul Wagstaff, 86, of Damariscotta, died at his home Wednesday, October 5. He had been in ill health for some time.

Born in Round Hill, Nova Scotia in 1919, he was the youngest child of John and Helen (Whitman) Wagstaff. The family moved to Boothbay when Mr. Wagstaff was a boy. He grew up on a farm overlooking Adams Pond, attended Boothbay schools, and played on the town baseball team.

After a brief stint delivering milk for Oakhurst Dairy, he enlisted in the Army in 1942. In 1943 he became an American citizen.

During World War II, he served as Flight Engineer in the Army Air Corps in the Aleutian Islands. Upon discharge in 1945, he returned to Oakhurst Dairy, but shortly after joined Central Maine Power Company. He worked with the crews that first brought power into many outlying areas of Lincoln County.

Mr. Wagstaff was a founding member of the Lincoln County Rifle Club, a life member of the Pine Tree State Rifle Club and Sportsmen’s Alliance of Maine, a member of the Sheepscot Salmon Club, American Legion Post #42 of Damariscotta and St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Newcastle. In the 1980s, he served on the state Atlantic Sea Run Salmon Commission.

He was a lifelong outdoorsman, from his boyhood days of checking his trap line at dawn, to his last years of sitting by the edge of a field in November twilight. He had a series of Labradors with whom he hunted on land and water.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Margaret Quinnam Wagstaff; his step-daughter, Patricia Lewis of Woolwich; grandchildren, Paul Rosenblum of Cumberland, Jill Rosenblum of Portland, and Lee Rosenblum of South Portland; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Mr. Wagstaff was predeceased by two sisters, Myra Giles and Margaret Jean Paine; and one brother, Charles Boyce Wagstaff.

His life will be memorialized at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Newcastle at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 15.

Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home in Waldoboro.

James E. Walker
2005-03-24

James Ewing Walker, 84, a former oilman, book store owner and gardener, died March 2nd after a brief illness.

Mr. Walker was raised in Philadelphia where he attended the Montgomery School before entering, and later graduating from, St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H. He graduated from Harvard College in 1942 and attended the Harvard Business School before resigning and enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Force from which he retired with the rank of Captain in 1946. During his tour in the ETO, he served as aide-de-camp to combat pilot Brig-adier General Eugene Eubank, who with his young aide, flew numerous combat missions over Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

Mr. Walker was a member of the Owl Club at Harvard, the Philadelphia Club, and the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Virginia.

Mr. Walker was the son of Kate Ewing Eaches and Robert Coleman Walker, a partner in the Philadelphia law firm of Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoades, and a former Chairman of the Board of The Life Insurance Company of Virginia. He was the godson of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Owen J. Roberts.

Following World War II, Mr. Walker joined his brother in the founding of Walker Brothers Oil Company in Oklahoma City, and retired to Newcastle, Maine in 1969. In 1971, he and his wife, Alston Barroll Walker, purchased The Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta, Maine; Mr. Walker retired from this business in 1995.

In addition to his passion for books, Mr. Walker was an ardent gardener, winning the PBS television series Crockett's Victory Garden nation-wide competition in 1980. He was also active in volunteer work in both Newcastle and Damariscotta, including the leadership of People to People and presidency of Skidompha Library. In the early 1980s, he and a handful of civic leaders were instrumental in forming the Damariscotta Board of Trade, which was later to become the Damariscotta Chamber of Commerce.

Survived by his wife of 59 years, Mr. Walker also leaves three children, Kate Walker Curran of Chestnut Hill, Mass., J. Ewing Walker, Jr. of Houston, Texas, and Jane Walker McCall of New Orleans; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He will be laid to rest, with private family services, at the Hillside Cemetery, Damariscotta, in the spring. A public memorial service will be announced.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta.

Frederick Wallace Jr.
2005-12-15

Frederick N. Wallace Jr., 61, of Alna, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 7, at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston.

Born on November 14, 1944 in New Britain Connecticut, he was the son of Frederick Sr. and Elfrieda Zerrull Wallace.

On January 1, 1964, he married his beloved wife Donna in Connecticut.

Mr. Wallace was a true racing fan. At the age of 14 he started watching and participating, racing on tracks from Connecticut to Maine. He also enjoyed camping at Mt. Blue and his dog "noopy."

He worked for O.W. Holmes of Newcastle, Phillip's Power Products of Damariscotta, Russell Griffin of Edgecomb, Dipietro-Kay of Bristol, N.C. Hunt of Nobleboro, Yudy's Tire of Damariscotta and as a self-employed auto technician for the last several years.

Mr. Wallace was predeceased by his parents; and a brother, Charles Thaxton.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Donna Wallace; and one daughter, Alisa Wallace, both of Alna; three sons, Frederick Wallace and wife Kristin of Maryland, Dale Wallace and wife Kim of Damariscotta, and David Wallace and wife Lisa of Nobleboro; grandson, but raised as a son, Kysten Wallace of Alna; two sisters, Dorothy Wollman of Connecticut and Elfrieda Ballou of Florida; two brothers, Robert Thaxton and Roy Thaxton, both of Connecticut; grandchildren, Amanda, Michael and Jacob Wallace, Steven, Katie and Justin French, Erica Wallace, Tiffany Rae Pinkham, Nicole Marie Abbott, Kala Smith, Kacie Smith, John Cunningham, Kody Wallace, Kolt Wallace; and three great-grand-children Angel and'Dakota Benner, and Emily Donohue.

A memorial service was held Sunday, December 11, at the Alna/ Newcastle Baptist Church in Alna.

Arrangements were under the care of Kincer Funeral Home 130 Pleasant Street in Richmond.
