Leonard G. Wallace
2005-08-11

Leonard G. Wallace, 85, of Newington, Connecticut and a long-time summer resident of Southport, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 7, at his summer home on Southport.

Born in Melrose, Massachusetts on July 19, 1920 he was the son of Roscoe C. and Edith Tarbox Wallace.

Mr. Wallace graduated from Melrose High School. He joined the National Guard in 1939. After Pearl Harbor, he was called up to the 182nd Infantry Division and served in the Pacific Theater on Guadalcanal, the Solomons, and in the Philippines from January 1942 until 1945.

In October of 1947 he married Priscilla Eaton and they moved to Newington, Conn. in 1953. He was employed by Aetna Insurance Company as an accountant for over 25 years.

He was predeceased by his son, Jeffrey L. Wallace; one brother, Clark Wallace; and one sister, Betty Wallace Ward.

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Priscilla Wallace of Conn. and Maine; two sons, Scott Wallace and his wife Chris of Ridgefield, Conn., Craig Wallace and his wife, Marjorie of New Britain, Conn.; two daughters, Sherry Spring and her husband, Robert of Newington, Conn. and Lisa Lawlor and her husband, Brian of Woodstock, Vt.; grandchildren, Brian and Gregory Wallace, Deanne and Carli Wallace, Jeffrey and Lindsay Spring, and Jessica, Joseph and Edward Lawlor; one niece, Susan Scales and her husband Jack of Westwood, Mass. and a brother-in- law Robert Eaton and his wife Leanne of Southport.

A memorial service will be held in Newington, Conn. at a date and time to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mr. Wallace's memory to the Hendrick's Hill Historical Museum, P.O. Box 3, Southport, ME 04576; or the Friends of Southport Library, P.O. Box 148, Southport, ME 04576.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Boothbay.

Shirley Walls dies
2005-04-22

Shirley Walls, 62, of Gray, has gone home to be with the Lord on April 18 after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Shirley is the daughter of Robert and Phyllis Ayer, of Yarmouth. She attended schools in Yarmouth, and retired in 2001 from Amica Insurance Company as an underwriter.

Shirley was very active in her church, leading women's groups and conducting home groups. She enjoyed helping other women. She had a great love for family, gardening, decorating her home and shopping.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 28 years, Richard Walls of Gray; a son, Robert Davis, of Gray; a daughter, Vicky Walls, of Rockwood, TN; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Jane Winters, of Yarmouth.

A memorial service will be held at 3 P.M. on Sunday, April 24, at the Windham Assembly of God Church, 1051 Roosevelt Trail (Route 302), Windham. Pastor Daniel Abbatiello will officiate.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the name of Shirley Walls to The Windham Christian Academy, 1051 Roosevelt Trail, Windham, ME 04062.

Mark M. Walter Jr.
2005-05-05

Mark M. Walter Jr., M.D., 80, a resident of Sharon, N.H., died Monday, April 25 at his summer home in Boothbay.

Born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Mark M. Walter, Esq. and Erma Betz Walter.

He attended Lafayette College and Swarthmore College before graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.

Dr. Walter served in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He earned the degree master of public health from the Harvard School of Public Health with a specialty in preventive mental health. He did his psychiatric residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital and was in a training analysis in Boston.

He held a Joint Appointment to the Harvard Medical School Department of Psychiatry and was on the senior psychiatric staff at McLean Hospital, devoting 34 years to the treatment of the mentally ill and training the next generation of psychiatrists.

In 1953 Dr. Walter married Jocelyn Salter. He was an avid fly fisherman.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years; four children, Mark M. Walter III and his wife Rachael Verdile Walter and their sons Philip Mark and Peter Michael of Keene, N.H., Adam Brewster Walter and his wife Katherine Ruze Walter and their son Evan Ruze of Golden, Colo., John Stuart Walter and his wife Alicia Rosen Walter and their sons Riley Jacob and Dylan Francis of Shutesbury, Mass., and Victoria Anne Plotsky, Esq. and her husband Bruce Plotsky and his daughter Larissa Rose of Delmar, N.H.

A family service will be held at a later date in the western Maine mountains.

In lieu of flowers, please take a young person fishing.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Harriet Warren
2005-01-13

Harriet Warren, 89, of Boothbay, died Friday, December 31 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born in Saint Albans, she was a daughter of Arthur and Beatrice Carey Baird. She grew up on a farm and attended both high school and college. During high school she played basketball.

Mrs. Warren enjoyed hunting, fishing, sailing, skiing and teaching horseback riding.

During World War II she flew an airplane for the Civil Air Patrol and patrolled the coast of Maine. In the 1950s she was a personal secretary to a former Maine governor.

In her late 30s she married and raised a family. At that time she became a substitute teacher and also managed apartments in the Topsham area. She participated in sailboat racing with her grandchildren and became a NASCAR fan.

Mrs. Warren was a former member of the Topsham Garden Club and volunteered at Regional Memorial Hospital.

She was predeceased by a sister, Eileen Johnson; and a brother, Robert Baird.

Survivors include a son, George Warren and his wife Carrie of Edgecomb; three daughters, Sue Tiller and her husband Tom of Southport, Terry Arford and Jon Doyle of Richmond, and Andrea Rand of Falmouth; one brother, Ralph Baird of Augusta; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral mass was held Tuesday, January 4 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor. Interment will be at Hallowell cemetery in the spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross, c/o Tsunami Fund, 16 Community Way, Topsham, ME 04086.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Ralph J. Watts
2005-03-24

Ralph J. Watts, 86, of Brunswick, formerly of Boothbay Harbor, Maine died Friday, March 18 at a local hospital following a brief illness.

Born on July 2, 1918 in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Robert and Rachel Bowman Watts.

He attended local schools and graduated from Boothbay High School in the class of 1936. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard where he served on Light Stations and troop transport during World War II.

On May 3, 1947 he married Dorothy Brewer Delafield in Boothbay Harbor.

After his tour of duty he managed Watts Esso Service Station in Boothbay Harbor for 29 years, and then worked at Bath Iron Works, retiring in 1985.

The camp at Damariscotta Lake was a special place he loved and enjoyed with his wife and family for the past 45 years.

Mr. Watts was a life member of Seaside Lodge of Masons #144 in Boothbay Harbor, the American Legion Post #36, Kora Shrine, Charter member of the Boothbay Harbor Lions Club and a 30-year member of the Bath Lodge of Elks.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years; one son, Alan and his wife Ruth Watts of Boothbay Harbor; one daughter, Louise Delafield and her husband Vincent Balzano of Scarborough; one sister; several nieces, nephews, step-grandchild- ren, and step-great-grandchildren.

At the family's request there will be no services.

Those who wish may make contributions in Mr. Watts' memory to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556; Shriners Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02142-699; or to the Bath Lodge of Elks, 9 Lambard St., Bath, ME 04530.

Arrangements are under the direction of the David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High St. in Bath, Maine.

Dayton Webb, with Gray ties, passes
2005-04-08

Dayton B. Webb, 56, of Reston, VA, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 3, at his residence, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Webb was a graduate of Gray-New Gloucester High School, and a retired Lieutentant-Colonel in the U.S. Air Force.

He was the son-in-law of George and Bea Muzzy, of Gray, and the beloved husband of Karen D. (Muzzy) Webb; loving father of Jena C. Webb and fiance, Nicolas Mainville, of Montreal, Canada; son of Margaret L. of Beaufort, SC, and the late Edward C. Webb both formerly of Gray; brother of Frederic Webb, of Beaufort, SC, Charles Webb, of Gray, ME, and Callie Burke, of Jacksonville, NC. A Memorial Service was held at Adams Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden St., Herndon, VA on Friday, March 11.

Interment was private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Douglas N. Weimont
2005-12-01

Douglas N. Weimont, 43, of Amherst, New Hampshire, died Thursday, November 24, at the Community Hospice House, Merrimack, NH after a lengthy illness.

Born in Nashua, N.H. on June 14, 1962, he was a son of the late Arne I. and Norma R. (Tillison) Weimont.

Mr. Weimont was a lifelong resident of Amherst and a graduate of Milford Area Senior High School.

Mr. Weimont had been employed for Air Mar Technology, Milford, for several years.

He was a very social person and always enjoyed meeting new people. In addition, he loved the outdoors, especially fishing and auto racing.

Survivors include five sisters and brothers-in-law, Hope W. Dodd, Heather M. and Michael Ciardelli, all of Milford, N.H., Holly and Jim Cassidy, Heidi W. and Robert Crowell, all of Goffstown, N.H., Hildy G. and Peter Johnson of Boothbay; a brother, Robert A. Weimont and his wife Maggie Chadwick of Cape Elizabeth; three dear friends, James Hendrix, Mike Dupont and John "Sully" Sullivan, all of Amherst, N.H.; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

There are no visiting hours. A memorial reception celebrating his life will be held Saturday, December 3 from 1 to 4 pm at The Bedford Village Inn, 2 Village Inn Lane in Bedford, N.H. Burial will be in Meadowview Cemetery, Amherst, N.H., at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Community Hospice House, 210 Naticook Road, Merrimack, NH 03054.

Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford, is in charge of arrangements.

Victoria E. Weiss
2005-01-20

Victoria "Vicki" E. Weiss, 49, of Woolwich, died Thursday, January 13, as the result of injuries sustained in a car accident in Woolwich.

Born in Virginia Beach, Va. on December 19, 1955, she was the daughter of Donald and Bernice McAtee.

She attended Virginia schools and graduated from a high school in Virginia. She moved to the Bath area and was employed at Sarah's in Bath and more recently in Wiscasset.

On September 9, 1995 she married Lee M. Weiss.

Mrs. Weiss loved gardening, crafts and spending time outdoors.

She is survived by her husband, Lee M. Weiss; one son, Ed Gorman; one daughter, Melody Gorman, all of Woolwich; one brother, Michael McAtee of North Carolina; three sisters, Colleen Anderson, Erin Defenbaugh and Robin McAtee; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, January 19, at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath, with Rev. Mark Wilson officiating.

Memorial contributions were made to Special Olympics of Maine, 129 John Roberts Road, South Portland, ME 04106.

Paul E. Wellde
2005-12-22

Paul Edward Wellde, 64, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 9 in Cheticamp, Nova Scotia.

Born on September 6, 1941 in Beloit, Wisconsin, he was the son of Isabel and Carl Wellde, and moved to Portsmouth as a young child. He attended Portsmouth schools and later served in the U.S. Air Force.

He was a 10-year employee of Public Service of New Hampshire and lobstered on the side as a hobby for pleasure. For several years, he lived in Boothbay.

Mr. Wellde's love of the ocean took him to Canada to purse a career in the fishing industry. He built his company, Little River Snow Crab Company, over the last 20 years into a successful business. He was captain of his boat, as well as president and owner of his company.

He enjoyed hunting, walking in the woods, feeding and watching the birds, indulging in a few drafts at the local tavern, and most of all, spending time with his children.

Survivors include a daughter, Paula Wellde Nelson and her husband Brett of Rye, N.H.; and one son (best friend and fishing/business partner), Russell Edward Wellde of Petit, Etang, Nova Scotia.

He is predeceased by his brother, Bruce T. Wellde; and his parents, Isabel and Carl Wellde, both formerly of Portsmouth.

Private services will be held at a later date at a time to be determined by the family.
