George J. Young, Jr.
2001-03-08

George John Young, Jr., 76 of Chamberlain, passed away at his family home on the evening of March 1.

Born on July 3, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the only child of George J. Young, Sr. and Mildred (Truslow) Young.

While very young, Mr. Young moved with his family to Morristown, NJ, where he lived most of his life. Serving in WW II, he was part of the battle at Normandy Beach. Upon returning from the war, he worked as a Systems Analyst at the Beneficial Management Corporation in Morristown.

Mr. Young moved to Chamberlain in 1985, to live in the home his family vacationed at for many years. When he wasn’t at his computer, he was an active member of the Bristol Lions Club, and was an avid sailor.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Young of Chamberlain; three children, George J. Young III, Cindee Young, and Shelley Nolan, all of New Jersey; as well as four grandchildren.

Hour of visitation Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, March 5 at 2 p.m., service to follow at 3 p.m.

He will be laid to rest with his parents in the New Harbor cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Bristol First Responders, New Harbor, 04554, or Miles Home Health-Hospice, Box 4500, Damariscotta, 04543.

Paul Denton Yeary
2003-07-24

Paul Denton Yeary died at his home in Goshen, Ohio on Easter Sunday morning, April 20 after a long illness with ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease.

A native of Ohio, he was born May 18, 1937 to Charlie T. And Dessie G. Yeary.

After graduating from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, he began his career as a math teacher and retired as an actuary and vice president of the Western Southern Life Insurance Company. He was also a member of the Society of Actuaries.

He was a faithful member of the Goshen Church of God for many years and as a deacon and choir member, he remained very active in that congregation most of his life.

Mr. Denton and his wife came to Maine for many years and stayed at the Ocean Point Inn until he became a summer resident of East Boothbay. He purchased a cottage on King Phillips Trail and became an active member of the King Phillips Trail Homeowners Association.

He attended the Lincoln County Assembly of God Church in Damariscotta. Through the years, he got to know the townspeople and loved them very much.

He was the beloved husband of 45 years to Joyce L. (nee Sawyers) Yeary and brother of Naomi Y. Gray and brother-in-law of the Rev. James Gray and Barbara Weed. He was the father and father-in-law of Vicki Y. and Mike Lunsford, Michael and Melissa Yeary and Anthony and Kimberly Yeary. He was the dear grandfather of Suzanne, Abigail, Amanda, Zachary, Thomas, Matthew, Jonathan and Nicholas.

He was predeceased by one granddaughter, Sarah.

Visitation was held April 23 at the Goshen Church of God. The service was held at the church on April 24 with the Rev. James E. McKinney and the Rev. Rick McKinney of the Goshen Church of God, and the Rev. Tom Wagers from the Lincoln County Assembly of God Church officiating.

Robert W. Young
2003-12-11

Robert W. Young, of Newcastle, formerly of Phippsburg, passed away Monday, December 8 at home with his family at his side.

Born June 7, 1923 in Bath he was the son of Gilbert J. and Anna Marie Lommell Young, and grew up in Auburn. He graduated from Morse High School in Bath in the Class of 1941. Mr. Young served during World War II with the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1945.

In 1948 he graduated from MVTI, and worked for 34 years at Bath Iron Works.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Dorothy (Gilley) Young; one son, Jonathan R. Young, Sr. and his wife Linda; one brother, James G. and wife Grace of Bath; two sisters, Lois Hart of Bath and Doris Lane and husband Milton of San Jose, Calif.; one granddaughter, Melissa Talgo; one grandson Jonathan R. Young Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Austin and Rachel Talgo. His extended family includes grandchildren and great-grandchildren Carolyn Moffatt and daughter Brittany and Jean Penuel, husband Jack and daughter Sara. A memorial service will be held at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Wiscasset on Sunday, December 14 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Philip's Episcopal Church, 12 Hodge St., Wiscasset, ME 04578.

Louis H. Young Jr.
2003-08-21

Louis Hodgdon "Capt. Lou" Young Jr., 74, passed away Tuesday August 19 in Bath at the home of his daughter, Samantha Young.

He was born in Bath on April 19, 1929, the eldest child of Louis and Hazel Reed Young. He was raised in Bath and attended local schools.

Captain Young entered the Air Force in 1950, serving in the Strategic Air Command until 1954. After his honorable discharge, he moved to Boothbay Harbor where he worked as a pipefitter at Sample's, Goudy & Stevens and Hodgdon Bros. shipyards.

In 1961 he became a charter boat captain and ran a charter service from Boothbay Harbor for many summers. He owned many boats, but was most fond of his charter boat, the Lassie. Lou captained the Bath Iron Works tugboat Kennebec from 1977 until his retirement in 1993.

He was an avid outdoorsman all of his life. He raised and conducted field trials for Labrador retrievers. He was a long-time duck hunter and member of the Boothbay Rod and Gun Club and the National Rifle Association. He was an enthusiastic gun collector.

Captain Young was a member of Bath Elks Club and American Legion, Smith-Tobey Post 21 for many years.

Mr. Young was predeceased by his parents, and two sons, Mark W. Young and Andrew L. Young.

He is survived by two sisters, Gloria Milliken of Alna and Sandra Borski of Bath; three daughters, Diane (Young) Hicks of Bath, Sara (Young) Trafton of Portland and Samantha Young of Bath; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

An Elks service will be held at the Elks Lodge on Lambard Street in Bath on Monday, August 25 at 7 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor on Thursday, August 28 at 3 p.m., followed by a reception at Gray's Wharf.

Louis H. Young Jr.

Hazel E. Young
2001-05-24

Hazel E. Young, 95, formerly of Bath and Boothbay Harbor, died Saturday, May 19 at Montello Manor in Lewiston after a lengthy illness.

Born on August 10, 1905 in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of Albert and Elizabeth Bridges Reed. She attended local schools.

On September 12, 1923, she married Louis H. Young. In 1931 they moved to Bath, where she worked at Bath Memorial Hospital. In 1952, they returned to Boothbay Harbor, and in 1993 she moved to Dionne Commons in Brunswick, and resided at Montello Manor in Lewiston since 1996.

She was a direct descendant of English Col. Andrew Reed, one of the pioneer settlers of the Boothbay region.

She was predeceased by her husband, Louis H. Young who died in 1993; an infant daughter, Judith Ann, died in 1945; one brother, Cecil Reed; five sisters, Blanche Dunton, Dorothy Townsend, Florence Sproul, Beatrice Smith and Grace Abbott.

Survivors include a son, Louis Young Jr. of Boothbay Harbor; two daughters, Gloria Milliken of Lewiston and Sandra Borski of Bath; a brother, Albert Reed Jr. of Waldoboro; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. One nephew, Larry Reed of Portland was very special to her.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 22 at Mayo, Curtis and Hill Funeral Home in Bath. The Rev. Donald E. Fowler officiated. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery, Bath.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pine Tree Society, 149 Front Street, Bath, ME 04530.

Gordon A. Young
2005-12-01

Gordon A. Young, 82, of East Boothbay, husband of Athleen "Lee" Young for nearly 59 years, died Sunday, October 16 at Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta.

Born on October 6, 1923 in Stoneham, Mass., he was the son of Amy Warburton Young and Alexander Young.

Mr. Young was educated in the Arlington and Cambridge, Mass. schools. He was a machinist for the Seaboard (CSX) Railroad, retiring in 1985.

For the past several years he lived in East Boothbay and Augusta.

A prayer vigil will be held in the spring of 2006.

Charles Young dies
2006-03-10

Charles E. Young, Sr., 76, passed March 4, after a short illness at Brentwood Manor.

He was born in Calais on April 4, 1929, a son of Charles and Maybelle Young. He moved to Freeport and went to work for Maine Central Railroad and retired after 44 years of work. He was a lifetime member of the Cumberland Lodge #12 in New Gloucester.

Throughout his life he enjoyed restoring cars, playing guitar, and boating on Sebago Lake with his family and friends. He also enjoyed visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are two sisters, Marylyn Tracey and Barbara Dziedzic, and one brother, Richard Young, all of Connecticut. He is also survived by his wife of 55 years, Roberta Jewett Young; two sons, Michael and Charles, Jr., both of Gray; two daughters Kim Mariner, of Lyman and Diane Anderson of Standish; three grandchildren, Cole, Scott and Kelly Mariner, and three great-grandchildren, Tiana, Austin, and Kevin.

There is will be no funeral at his request. A graveside services will be held in Walnut cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are under the care of Wilson Funeral Home.

Lillian M. Zahn
1998-04-09

Lillian M. Zahn

Lillian Michaud Zahn, 93, of Belleview, Florida, died Thursday, April 2 at Cypress Rehabilitation Center, Ocala, Florida. She lived in Boothbay Harbor before moving to Florida in 1994 with her son Roger Daigle and his wife Elsie formerly of Boothbay.

Born in Fort Kent, eldest of 12 children of Fred and Annie Landry Michaud, she attended private schools and held degrees in music and business.

Mrs. Zahn was a Catholic.

In 1934, she married Alphe Daigle. He died in 1948. She then married Bernard Zahn in 1951. They were divorced in 1963.

Mrs. Zahn was a secretary and worked for the federal government before retiring in 1981. Mrs. Zahn enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, also doing crossword puzzles.

Surviving are two sons, J. Roger Daigle of Belleview and Dana P. Daigle of Burlington, Washington; a sister, Irma Healy of West Milford, N.J.; a brother, Ray Michaud of Norway, Maine; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Ocala.

Lee S. Zarpentine
2001-04-26

Lee Stanton Zarpentine, 68, of Barters Island, Boothbay, died unexpectedly, Saturday, April 21 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on January 14, 1933, he was the son of Leonard C. and Mildred (Stanton) Zarpentine. He moved as a child to northern New Jersey where he lived until 1994 when he moved to Boothbay.

During the Korean War, Mr. Zarpentine served in the Army Signal Corp.

He worked for Bell Telephone Laboratories in Whippany, N.J. as an engineering technician before starting his own business designing and installing fire suppression systems for various corporations.

Mr. Zarpentine was for many years a member of the West Milford N.J. Chamber of Commerce, serving as President, Chairman of the Board and Treasurer. He was a Deacon in the Pequannock Reformed Church, Wayne, N.J.; a Trustee of the West Milford Presbyterian Church, N.J.; and was currently a member of the Board of Trustees at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor.

He loved Maine and enjoyed sharing it with his children, grandchildren, family and friends. He also enjoyed feeding the birds, the sunsets over the river, boating and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Barbara; three sons, Drew and his wife Sari of Rockaway, N.J., Dane and his wife, MaryAnn of Vernon, N.J., and Daren and his wife Kay of Harrison, Idaho and Boothbay Harbor; one daughter, Elizabeth Robinson and her husband James of Fishers, Ind.; six grandsons; three granddaughters; one brother, Lynn and his wife Linda of Columbia, S.C.; brothers and sisters-in-law of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for sometime this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor, 1 Eastern Avenue, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.
