Virginia M. Zollo
2002-05-30

Virginia M. Zollo, 86, of Boothbay Harbor, died at St. Andrews Hospital on May 21.

Born in Peabody, Mass., Mrs. Zollo was the daughter of Williams and Florence (Welch) Sherry. She was raised and educated in Danvers, graduating as the valedictorian of the Class of 1933 from Holten High School. She received her undergraduate degree from Salem Normal School in 1937 and then taught commercial subjects in Martha's Vineyard, Winthrop, Danvers, the A.B.C. Kindergarten (Danvers), and the original Andover Institute of Business in Andover.

She had a life-long commitment to education. In 1994, she and her husband wrote and published Ladies and Gentlemen Always: The Illustrated Story of Holten High School. It is a history of secondary education in Danvers from Colonial Days to 1952, the year Cornelius F. Dunn, the respected principal of Holten High School, retired. Mr. Dunn had a profound effect on the lives of his students, not the least of whom were the two authors.

Mrs. Zollo is survived by her husband, Richard Zollo; a son, Peter N. Zollo of Danvers; and a daughter-in-law, Laurie Wilczynski-Zollo; a sister, Elizabeth McCarthy of Gloucester; nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was also the sister of the late Barbara DiPaolo and James Sherry.

Funeral service was held at Our Lady Queen of Peace on Saturday, May 25. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be sent to the Palliative Care Program, St. Andrews Hospital, c/o the Development Office, 6 St. Andrews Lane, P.O. Box 417, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538 in gratitude for its loving care of Mrs. Zollo and her family following her stroke.

James Hanlon Jr., 68

OGUNQUIT - James F. Hanlon Jr., 68, a resident of Green Needle Lane, Ogunquit, Maine, formerly of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., and Atkinson, N.H., died suddenly July 18 at York Hospital in York.

He was born in Cambridge, Mass. on Nov. 12, 1932, a son of James F. Hanlon Sr. and Evelyn Teeves. He graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School and then enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served during the Korean War.

He worked for New England Telephone for 34 years, as a testman and later inspector.

He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of New England, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW), as well as, the Knights of Columbus, Burlington, Mass.

He began spending summers in Ogunquit in 1984 and became a permanent resident in 1995.

He enjoyed playing golf, history and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Doris L. (Aucella) Hanlon of Ogunquit; three sons, James F. Hanlon III of Andover, N.H., Michael J. Hanlon of Wells, and Thomas J. Hanlon of Biddeford; two daughters, Evelyn L. Macaro of Plaistow, N.H., and Patricia J. Hanlon of Lowell, Mass.; eight grandchildren, Joseph, David and Danielle Macaro, Yanil, Jacob, Nicholas, Ashley and James F. Hanlon IV.

A funeral service was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Eldridge Road, Wells, with the Rev. Joseph Ford officiating. Interment was in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. Arrangements were by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Should friends desire, a memorial donation may be made in Mr. Hanlon's memory to the American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate, P.O. Box 346 Augusta, Maine 04330-0346.

Richard Bemis Sr., 79

STANDISH - Richard G. Bemis Sr., 79, of Main Street in Steep Falls, formerly of Peaks Island and Houston, died July 25 at a Portland hospital.

He was born in Boston, a son of Raymond and Mildred (Price) Bemis. He graduated from Berkley Prep School, Boston, and from Boston University. He also attended a one-year program at Oxford University in England. He served in the Navy during World War II in Pacific and North Atlantic operations. He received the Bronze Star. On Dec. 16, 1949, he married the former Faith Ellis. She died in May 2001.

He worked for Portland Copper as an electronics engineer and then as a self-employed electrician. In 1978 he changed careers and became assistant dean of Houston Community College, retiring in May of 2000. He was a member and past commander of the Randall McVane post of the American Legion on Peaks Island. He was a past president of the Peaks Island Lions Club.

Surviving are four daughters, Joyce A. Hutchins of Falmouth, Laurie J. Kelley of South Portland, Suzanne E. Kane of Augusta and Gayle G. Douglas of Bangor; four sons, Richard G. Jr. of Steep Falls, Kenneth W. of Wells, David A. of Houston and John F. of Milwaukee; and 21 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private. Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Funeral Home, Portland.

Barbara Bohannon, 75

WELLS - Barbara E. Bohannon 75, a resident of Woodland Circle, died July 27, 2001 at the Varney Crossing Nursing Home in North Berwick after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Andover, Mass. on March 13, 1926, a daughter of Arthur and Sally "Sarah" (Ford) Koerner and beloved wife of Richard Bohannon. She was a native of Andover, Mass. and graduated from Punchard High School.

She was employed as a medical secretary for a private practice physician for more than 25 years. Prior to moving to Wells in 1992, she and her husband lived on Crystal Lake in Gilmington Iron works, New Hampshire were she was very active in her craft hobby. Her specialty was pierced and water She was an ardent fan and season ticket holder of the Boston Bruins. All her life she loved the beach and swimming in the surf, she also loved her dogs and cats.

She was survived by her husband of 45 years, Richard E. Bohannon of Wells.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the West Parish Garden Cemetery, 129 Reservation Road, Andover, Mass. A memorial service will be held at a later date, to be announced by Bibber Memorial Chapel. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Robert East, 92

OGUNQUIT - Robert A East, 92, economic historian and founder of the Program for Loyalist Studies and Publications and a resident of Stearns Road, died July 28, 2001 in York after a brief illness.

He was born May 16, 1909 in Lima, Ohio, a son of Charles Homer and Elsie (White) East. He was a graduate of Williams College in 1931, took his Ph.D. at Columbia University, a dissertation on Business Enterprise in American Revolutionary Era that won him the 1938 Dunning Prize from the American Historical Association.

He taught at Columbia and Kansas State University before joining the newly founded National Archives. He taught for the next few decades at Brooklyn College, then joined the first teaching staff at the Graduate Center of City University of New York.

As the Celebration of the Bicentennial of the American Revolution loomed in his profession in the late 1960s, he founded the Program for Loyalist Studies and Publications, sponsored by the American Antiquarian Society, City University of New York, University of London and University of New Brunswick, in order to tell the balanced story of those Americans who were on the losing side of that war.

Upon retirement, he continued to supervise the work of the Loyalist program. He was a member of the American Antiquarian Society, Colonial Society of Massachusetts, and other similar organizations. Among his published works include books on John Adams and John Quincy Adams.

He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth (Paddock) East, who died in 1995.

Survivors include one son, Frank P. East of Essex, N.Y.; one daughter, Elsie East Mooney of Southbury, Conn.; and three grandchildren.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Edith Harrison, 94

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Former resident Edith Lilian Harrison, 94, of Jeannine Court, Orlando, Fla., died July 26, 2001 after a short illness.

She was born in Manchester, N.H. on Sept. 13, 1096, the daughter of John William and Elizabeth Kadlec Theall.

She moved to Old Orchard Beach in 1944 and lived there until moving to Orlando in December 2000.

She taught and volunteered in local schools. She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and a recipient of several volunteer of the year awards.

Her husband, Arah Prescott Harrison, and her great-grandson, Kelsey Orion Zehner, died previously.

Survivors include one daughter, Delma Harrison O'Malley of Orlando; two sons, Arnold of York and Richard of Bangor; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Berton Salib, 73

KENNEBUNK - Berton Salib, 73, died July 21.

He was born in New York City, a son of Benjamin A. and Ida (Warnke) Salib, and attended schools there.

He served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He received a bachelor's degree from the City College of New York after the war.

On May 9, 1959, he married Marlene Walsh at Christ Church in Manhattan. He and his wife had been married for 42 years.

For many years, he was a member of the Liederkranz, a cultural organization in New York City, where he was chairman of the men's chorus and lead bass for 20 years.

He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. A republican political activist all of his life, he attended conventions from Dwight Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956 to the July 2000 convention in Philadelphia.

Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Berton J. Jr. of Gardiner and Paul M. of Norfolk, Va.; one brother, Adolph of Westwood, N.J.; and five granddaughters.

A memorial service was held Wednesday at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church with the Rev. Richard Horner officiating. Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

Edward Benjamin Bell, 98

CHELMSFORD, Mass. - Edward Benjamin Bell died unexpectedly on Oct. 3, 2001. He would have been 99 on Oct. 29.

He was born in Lowell, Mass. in 1902, the son of William and Mary Elsie (Carlton) Bell. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Lee (Page) Bell and has lived in Chelmsford for the past 48 years. He graduated from the Lowell Technological Institute in 1924 and went on to an illustrious career as a chemical engineer in the textile industry developing most of the textile uses for the water softener, Calgon, both in dyeing and finishing. He was vice-president of Nyanza, Inc. in Lawrence, a 32nd degree Mason of the William North Lodge in Lowell, and chair of American Assoc. of Textile Chemists and Colorists. He was an avid outdoorsman and staunch conservationist and a long time president of the Napachi Gun Club. He was instrumental in preserving Plum Island Wildlife Sanctuary in Newburyport, Mass. and was the prevailing party in the well known Supreme Court case (Bell vs. State of Maine) preventing the state from making the beach in front of privately owned shore front properties from becoming public. He also gifted land to the town of Tyngsborough to remain forever wild.

He leaves two daughters, Beverly Collins of Westford, Mass. and Janet Hicks of Hollis, N.H. as well as seven grandchildren, Kirsten and Karla Collins and Karen Matley, all of Westford, Mass., Kimberly Hicks, Nashua, N.H., Stephen Hicks, Deerfield, N.H., Page Hicks, Mansfield, Mass. and Pamela Hicks, Londonderry, N.H.; and three great-grandsons.

Contributions in Mr. Bell's memory can be made to the Tyngsboro Conservation Commission. Please make checks payable to the Town of Tyngsborough, 25 Bryants Lane, Tyngsborough, MA 01879-1003. There will be a private memorial service.

Thomas Cowgill, 16

NORTH WATERBORO - Thomas D. Cowgill, 16, of North Waterboro, died Oct. 8, 2001 from the results of a motor vehicle accident.

He was born on Nov. 10, 1984, the son of William Dagnese and Rebecca Bonner and was a junior at Massabesic High School, Waterboro.

He was very hard working. He was employed by the Shakerland Driving Range in North Waterboro.

He had a great sense of humor. He was a competitive, caring, friendly and very generous young man. He was a person who was loved by everyone he met. He went above and beyond for those in need. He loved and cherished the relationships that he had with children.

He enjoyed four wheeling, swimming, pick-up basketball and weight lifting. He also liked talking with his friends on the computer using the ICQ Network.

He is survived by his parents, William (Danny) Dagnese of Portland and Brian and Rebecca Bonner of Waterboro; one brother, William Dagnese of Portland; one sister, Tricia Fairbrother Dagnese of Portland; paternal grandmother, Patricia Dagnese of Portland; maternal grandparents, Albert and Joan Cowgill of Arundel; step-paternal grandparents, Jim and Mary Ann Bonner of Hallowell; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday at St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, Limerick.

Isola A. Dearborn, 86

AUGUSTA - Isola Anna Dearborn, 86, died Oct. 14, 2001 at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta after a long period of declining health.

She was born Oct. 4, 1915 at home on Northern Avenue in Augusta, a daughter of Maurice and Victoria (Jacques) Binette. She attended Augusta schools.

She married Leon Dearborn on Oct. 25, 1937 at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church in Augusta. She was employed at several locations, including the Veterans Administration Center at Togus and the former Augusta General Hospital, becoming a full time homemaker after the birth of their daughter. Together, they built a house on Tasker Road in Augusta where they lived for 40 years. Her husband died Dec. 31, 1994. After his death, she moved to Alton Road in Augusta and then to Atria Assisted Living in Kennebunk.

She was a communicant of St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church in Augusta. She was an active life member of American Legion Fitzgerald-Cummings Post 2 of Augusta. She was especially well known for her baking and cooking skills.

She is survived by one daughter, Victoria Dearborn Cherry, one son-in-law, Christopher Cherry and three grandsons, David, Thomas and Benjamin Cherry, all of Kennebunk; one sister, Emeline Paradis of Winslow; two brothers, Lawrence and Maurice Binette of Augusta; a close friend, Beverly Mooney; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St Andrew's Roman Catholic Church Augusta on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Seavey officiating. Burial will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery Augusta. Family flowers only please.

Joan Heminway, 76

ARUNDEL - Joan Muir Heminway, 76, resident of River Road in Arundel, died Oct. 9, 2001 at her residence following a long illness.

She was born Sept. 10, 1925 in New York City, N.Y., a daughter of Alan K. and Elsie Scarlet (Cover) Muir. She graduated from Walton High School in New York City with the class of 1943 and received her nursing degree from Bellevue School of Nursing in 1946.

She was employed as a registered nurse for several years at Goodall Hospital in Sanford, and Webber Hospital in Biddeford. She also worked at North Shore Hospital in Long Island, N.Y. and Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Conn. She was also employed at Kennebunk Public Health Department and St. Andre's Nursing Home in Biddeford for several years.

Following her retirement, she was very active in F.I.S.H. and also served as a volunteer Hospice nurse.

She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Saco.

She enjoyed birdwatching, traveling, reading and gardening.

Grateful thanks go the many family, friends and care givers , especially the most recent, Jessica Jones-Hutchins, Lisa Pickering and Heather Wescott who most lovingly cared for Joan.

She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Edwin H. Heminway, Jr. who died in July of 2000, two sons, Peter Mark, Edwin H. III and a third infant son and a brother Alan Keith MacDonald Muir, Jr.

She is survived by three daughters, Nancy H. Oswell of Colorado Springs, Colo., Karen H. Wood of Cape Elizabeth, Melissa B. Heminway (with whom she lived) of Arundel; one brother, John Douglas MacDonald Muir of Danbury, Conn.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held at Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church, in Saco with Rev. Mark S. Winward officiating. Interment was in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport. Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.
