Harriet Jutras, 84

YORK - Harriet B. Jutras, 84, resident of Victoria Court in York, died Nov. 24, 2001 at York Hospital following a long illness.

She was born May 20, 1917 in North Attleboro, Mass., a daughter of James and Corrinne (Rainville) McGrath. She moved to South Portland as a child and attended schools there.

She was employed for several years as a Licensed Practitioner Nurse for the Portland Home Care Agency.

She moved to Wells in 1960 where she was an active communicant of St. Mary's Church. She then moved to South Berwick in 1987 and to York in 1999.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and will be remembered for the beautiful sweaters she made.

She was predeceased by one son, Thomas Baker who died in 1965 and one brother Edward F. O'Donnell, who died in 1962.

She is survived by two sons, David Jutras of Wells, and Charles Baker of Nashua, N.H.; one daughter, Corrinne McDonald of Rochester, N.H.; one brother, William O'Donnell of Fort Smith, Alaska; one sister, Shirley Ross of Southbury, Conn.; and four grandchildren.

Private graveside services were held in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Wells Public Library, PO Box 699, Wells, ME 04090 in Mrs. Jutras' memory.

Lucille McIntyre, 39

WEST NEWFIELD - Lucille "Lynn" Jane McIntyre, 39, died Nov. 19, 2001, at a health care facility in Kennebunk from injuries she sustained in a motorcycle accident on Sept. 3.

She was born in Farmington on Aug. 12, 1962, a daughter of William and Lucille (Rose) Mason Sr. and graduated from Winthrop High School.

She loved children.

An infant daughter, Emily Mae rose, died previously.

Surviving are her husband, David McIntyre; four children, Donald, Christopher, Dustin and Sarah Crocker of Wells; her father, of Industry; one sister, Tina Lunt of North Monmouth; one stepson, Garrett Eben of Hermon; two half-brothers, Harold and John Mason and one half-sister, Lisa Mason, all of Industry; and one granddaughter.

Nancy J. Stevens, 63

WELLS - Nancy J. Stevens, 63, resident of Sanford Road in Wells, died Nov. 21, 2001 at York Hospital in York, following a long illness.

She was born Aug. 30, 1938 in Cambridge, Mass., a daughter of Frank and Anna (Varney) Martell. She attended Cambridge, Mass. schools.

She was a longtime resident of Bridgton, Maine and worked for several years at Bridgton Hospital.

She attended the Mt. Zion Pentecostal Church of Wells and also attended the Assembly of God Church of Windham.

She is survived by her husband Wendell Stevens of Wells; one son, Christopher Axtman of Bridgton; two daughters, Nancy Ebert of Hollis and Lucinda Farnsworth of Saco; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at Monday, at the Mt. Zion Pentecostal Church, Wells with Pastor Terry Courtney officiating. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Kenneth Sullivan, 50

YORK HARBOR - Kenneth Hayes Sullivan, 50, of Starboard Lane, died Nov. 24, 2001, at York Hospital from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

He was born in Boston, a son of Edward D. and Helen (Hynes) Sullivan. He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1969 with high honors. While in high school he was on the wrestling team and was an All State member and captain of the golf team.

He received his bachelor's degree in 1973 and his master's in management engineering in 1974 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., where he was a Baker Scholar and received an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1976.

He began his career as a securities trader with E.F. Hutton in New York City until 1984. He then became a senior vice president for Drexel-Bumham-Lambert Co. in New York City. He also worked as an investment banker for the Republic National Bank. In 1990 he started his own company, Mercadian Capital Corp., and was the CEO of Principia Corp. with offices in Jersey City and London.

In 1998, he and his family moved to York Harbor to fulfill a lifelong dream of building a golf course. He was a partner of the Ledges Golf Course in York, and recently opened the Fox Ridge Golf Club in Auburn. He continued to pursue his interests as a securities investor.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher's Church in York.

He was on the board of trustees of the Wardlaw Hardridge School, which his children had attended, and was active in its sports program.

He enjoyed working with children and was an assistant coach for many sports in Westfield, N.J., where he resided for 20 years. He was an assistant for the wrestling team at York High School. He loved all outdoor activities and had competed in many marathons and iron man events. He enjoyed playing golf.

Surviving are his wife, whom he married Aug. 31, 1974, Sharon E. (Tyska) Sullivan of York Harbor; three sons, Nolan E., Nicholas T., and Kyle H., all of York Harbor; his father, of Hanover, N.H.; two brothers, Gregory of Salem, N.H. and Theodore, of Simi Valley, Calif.; two sisters, Janet Sullivan of Orleans, Mass., and Rebecca Fawcett of Hanover.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday at St. Christopher's Church, York. Burial was in First Parish Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Adeline Tomao, 93

LITTLETON, Mass. - Adeline (Guglielmo) Tomao, 93, died Nov. 22, 2001 at her home.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of the late Michael and Ernestine (D'Angelo) Guglielmo.

Formerly of Waltham and Wayland, Mass., she made Littleton her home for the past 10 years. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her family.

She was the beloved mother of Ralph R. and his wife, Tyra of Nashua, N.H., Joanne Tomao of Ogunquit, Sandra Debus and her husband, John of Chelmsford, Ernestine of Littleton and Michael J. and his wife, Barbara of Bellingham; sister of Jennie D'Angio of Tallahassee, Fla.; she is the cherished grandmother of seven; and great-grandmother of three, also survived by several nieces and nephews and dear friends.

She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Raymond Tomao, her son, Julian Tomao, her brother Joseph Guglielmo, and her sisters, Virginia Rosa, Helen Marini, Constance Pasquini and Eugenia DeMeo.

A funeral was held at Badger Funeral Home, Littleton on Monday followed by a Christian burial at St. Anne's Church.

Donations in her memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Corrine Staid, 74

KENNEBUNKPORT - Corinne Wilkins Staid, 74, died Nov. 24, 2001 at a Portland hospital after a brief illness.

She was a professional artist, teacher and master in the technical medium of watercolor. She was the mother of six, grandmother of 10, community activist and avid gardener who always had time to enjoy and help her family and friends.

A graduate of Danvers High School (Mass.) and LaSalle Junior College, she was proficient in drafting and mechanical drawing. She worked as an electrical engineering draftsman and fashion illustrator in Boston and New York for several years before starting her family. While raising her children in Reading and Andover, Mass., she yearned once again to draw and to learn to paint. She studied under well-known artist Taddeus Klodnicki and was soon teaching art courses from her home and exhibiting her own works in shows across New England.

She also studied with Don Stone, David Sullivan, Roger Curtis and Beverly Hallam. She enjoyed a long career in the making of fine art. Her love of art records her love of life, and from it has come a broad range of subject matter including landscapes and abstracts in a variety of traditional media. As evidenced by more than 100 awards, her favorite medium was watercolor and she has been exhibited in national shows and galleries in the Northeast and Canada. Her artwork is included in private collections throughout the continent.

She was a member of the Reading Art Association, Andover Artist Guild, North Shore Arts Association, New England Watercolor Society, Concord Art Association, Copley Society of Boston, River Tree Arts and a charter member of the Art Guild of the Kennebunks. Some of her awards include the Silver Medal and the Lamber Award, New England Watercolor Society, Frederic Whitaker Prize, Providence Water Color Club, Marion Quimby Award, Ogunquit Art Center, Judges Award, North Suburban Art Show, First Bicentennial Award, Beverly Bicentennial Art Festival and the National Academy of Design, N.Y., N.Y.

In 1972, her first gallery was in the River House on Ocean Avenue, Kennebunkport. A year later she opened the Cory Staid Loft Gallery in the Yellow House in Lower Village, which she ran until 1989. Since that time she has been teaching and exhibiting from her home gallery on Durrells Bridge Road in Arundel.

Surviving are three daughters, Karen Ireland of Belfast, MaryBeth Staid Mathews of Cumberland, and Kathy Willis of Lawrence, Mass.; three sons, Kevin P. Staid of Lowell, Mass., Jon W. Staid of Lawrence, Mass. and Brian J. Staid of Kennebunkport; three sisters, Pauline Proctor of Gorham, Sylvia Shepard of Danvers, Mass., and JoAnne Alukonis of Newburyport, Mass.; and 10 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother, Phillip Wilkins, of Newton, Mass.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church on Route 1 in Kennebunk. A family and friends gathering will follow in the church hall until 4 p.m. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

M. Mildred Valeska, 88

KENNEBUNKPORT - M. Mildred Valeska, 88, of Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport, died Nov. 27, 2001, at the Kennebunk Nursing Center.

She was born Mary Mildred Kane in Lowell, Mass. on April 2, 1913, the only daughter of James A. and Mae Kane.

She was educated in Lowell, Mass. schools and earned her B.S. Ed. at the State College at Lowell and her M. Ed. at the State College at Salem, Mass.

She began her 34-year teaching career in a one-room school in Salem, N.H., teaching all eight grades. Her second assignment was at a two-room school teaching grades four through eight and a promotion to principal of the system.

On June 27, 1942 she married Peter J. Valeska, a high school science teacher and they settled into a 13-room house in which they loved to entertain. She was a virtuoso piano player and a talented vocal soloist.

In 1946, their only child, Peter II, "P.J." was born. He made his parents proud by graduating from McGill University and becoming a teacher like them.

She became the first kindergarten teacher in the public schools of Methuen, Mass. and was much beloved and remembered by her young students. She was popularly known as the "Purple Lady" because of the beautiful clothes she wore, usually featuring her favorite color.

In 1980 she and her husband retired to the oceanside house they had originally built as a summer home in the 1960s. She was always admired for her stylish appearances when she dined and attended functions of the Republican Party.

In 1985 she published a book about her many years as a kindergarten teacher titled "Y'Know What?"

She was a member of the College Club of Greater Lawrence, Mass. and of the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association of Massachusetts. She worked wholeheartedly for the Heart Fund, but her favorite charitable endeavor was the provision of warm clothes and toys for the many Irish families with young children whom she befriended on her 20 trips to Ireland.

She was predeceased by a brother James Kane.

Surviving are her husband of 59 years of Goose Rocks Beach; one son, Peter J. Valeska II of Reno, Nev.; one sister-in-law, Mary Valeska of Reno, Nev.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Friday at Hope Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Arundel cemetery in Kennebunkport. Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

Dorothy L. Lord, 91

KENNEBUNK - Dorothy Louise Lord, 91, of Pine Bluffs Apartments, passed away on Dec. 1, 2001, at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Massachusetts and is survived by one son, William of Cape Porpoise, her daughter-in-law Deborah; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She lived some 20 years in Kennebunk.

In her early years, she enjoyed dancing at the Old Orchard Beach Pier where she won many waltz contests. And it was at one of those dances that she met her future husband, John Richmond Lord.

She and her husband moved to Saco during World War II and eventually opened a motel on Route 1 in the early '50s.

In recent years she enjoyed playing cards with her neighbors at Pine Bluffs as well as eating and socializing on a daily basis at Square Toes. Life was to be enjoyed and she enjoyed it.

A memorial service will be held at the Kennebunk Baptist Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.

Arlene Plante, 85

KENNEBUNK - Arlene E. Plante, 85, a resident of Southridge Living Center, formerly of Kennebunk, loving mother of 10 children, died Nov. 28, 2001 at her residence after a long illness.

She was born July 24, 1916 in Sanford, the daughter of Algie C. and Josephine (Towne) Simmons, and attended Kennebunk schools.

For many years, she was employed as a charge nurse with the former Leech Nursing Home in Kennebunk.

She was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Lower Village, Kennebunk.

Survivors include five sons, William Stone of Arundel, Algie Stone of Saco, Arthur Plante of Biddeford, Joseph Plante of Biddeford, and Thomas Plante of Kennebunk; five daughters, Josephine Whittemore of Stuart Fla., Louise Moulton of Kennebunk, Virginia Hanson of Kennebunk, Hilda Sparks of Lenoir, N.C., and Mary Camire of Lyman; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

A funeral was held Saturday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk with Rev. James King officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Southridge Living Center Recreation Fund, c/o Diane Perrone, 173 South St., Biddeford, ME 04005 in Mrs. Plante's memory.

Edith B. Wakefield, 85

CORNISH - Edith Barbara Wakefield, 85, of Cornish Station, Cornish, formerly of Kennebunk Beach, died Nov. 28, 2001 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born in Biddeford, Maine, April 6, 1916, the daughter of Robert and Annis (Goodwin) Bryant.

She graduated from Biddeford High School and later attended Simmons College.

Her family owned and operated the Atlantis Hotel in Kennebunk Beach for many years.

She married Francis F. Keefe and traveled with him throughout New England at his job as a traveling battery salesman. Their travels took them from Winchester, Mass., to Nutley and Ridgewood, N.J. and finally to Greenwich, Conn.

She enjoyed traveling, golfing and reading.

She was predeceased by her husband Francis F. Keefe in 1956.

She is survived by one son, Gordon B. Keefe of Greenwich, Conn.; one daughter, Judith Carmel of Framingham, Mass.; two sisters, Hope Wallace of Whispering Pines, N.C. and Shirley Mitchell of England; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by Linda Wakefield LaRou of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and Susan Wakefield Gray of Blue Hill, Maine; her ex-husband, Raymond Wakefield.

At the family's request there will be a private graveside service

Internment will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Dennett, Craig & Pate 365 Main St., Saco are in charge of the arrangements.
