Lorraine L. Laitress, 66

KENNEBUNK - Lorraine L. Laitress, 66, a resident of York Street, died Dec. 2, 2001, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland after a long illness.

She was born Aug. 15, 1935 in Kennebunk, a daughter of Alex and Alice (Bosse) Bernier, and was a graduate of Kennebunk High School.

She was employed by Kesslen Shoe Shop in Kennebunk from 1957 to 1979, when the plant closed, she then went to work with William Arthur Co. in Kennebunk as one of its first employees, and was with the company for 14 years.

She was a communicant of St. Martha Church in Kennebunk.

She is survived by her husband O'Neil P. Laitress, of Kennebunk.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday at St. Martha Church, Kennebunk, with Rev. Laurant Laplante officiating.

Interment was in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Anthony J. Gallo, 63

NATICK, Mass. - Anthony J. Gallo, 63, of Natick, died unexpectedly Dec. 1, 2001 at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

He was the husband of Lillian M. (Sicchio) Gallo.

Born in Brighton, Mass. and a lifelong resident of Natick, he was the son of the late Anthony and Mary (Gulla) Gallo.

He was owner of a real estate development company in Natick for many years and attended the Natick School system and graduated from Natick High School class of 1956. He was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Parish and enjoyed walking.

He is survived by one son, Anthony J. Gallo Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Franklin; four daughters, Donna M. Gallo and her husband, William Leary, of Upton; Ann Page of Ogunquit; Karen Monaco and her husband, Robert, of Strafford, N.H., and Rebecca Gallo of Natick, Mass.; five sisters, Maron Berardino and her husband, Silvio, of Natick, Antoinette Pizzi of Belmont, Jean Vello of Waltham, Elizabeth Willis of Framingham, and Patricia Stafford of Holliston; one brother-in-law, Joseph Vultaggio of Wilmington; eight grandchildren, Andrew Page, Mark Page, Jeffery Page, all of Ogunquit, Patricia Monaco, Kimberly Monaco, Jennifer Monaco, all of Strafford, N.H., Robert Gallo and Michael Gallo of Franklin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother of the late Eleanora Vultaggio.

A funeral Mass was held Wednesday in St. Patrick's Church. Burial followed in St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in his name to the Natick Visiting Nurse Association, 209 West Central St., Natick, MA 01760 or to the Natick Food Pantry, 39 East Central St., Natick, MA 01760.

>Isabel Raynes, 90

YORK - Isabel Raynes, 90, of 13 Western Point Road, died peacefully on Nov. 30, 2001 at her home among family and loved ones.

Born Jan. 22, 1911, in Newport, N.H., she was a resident of York since 1943.

She was a source of strength and wisdom to all who knew her. A lifelong Roosevelt Democrat, she was generous with her knowledge and compassionate in her judgment. She was a voracious reader a fearsome Scrabble player and a self-taught woman who demanded the best of people. Strong enough to be exactly who she was, she always respected people's differences.

She was most proud of her six children and the large loving family that unfolded around her. She was the sun we circled, the first mother in our lives, and she will be profoundly missed.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Raynes of York and five children, Raymond W. Howe of Mathis, Texas, Harry B. Howe of York, Doris Glenn of York, James E. Howe of Sanford and Ester Moser of York. She was also predeceased by her grandsons, Samuel Thompson of York and Alex Schermer of York and her stepsons, Alan Raynes and John Raynes Jr.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty Freeman of York; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two stepsons, Stanley Raynes and Frederick Howe and many family members who will always hold her dear to their hearts.

She was fortunate to die where she lived and her family wishes to thank those who made it possible. She made it to her final home at long last and forever.

A graveside service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the First Parish cemetery in York for family and friends. Arrangements are by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

James J. Kelleher, 77

CANTON, Mass. - James J. Kelleher, 77, of Canton, died Nov. 21, 2001, at the Caritas Norwood Hospital after a long illness.

He was born and raised in Canton, attended Canton High School and Wentworth Institute of Technology. He was an outstanding athlete and a leader of the football and hockey teams and Dog Patch Skating Rink during the 1940s. He was a Navy Veteran and served aboard the "USS Saratoga" in World War II. He was a member and organizer of the former Canton Corner Club. He enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, animals and his family. He was the former manager of the Marine Division of Northrop of Needham, Mass., and the former Metal Bellows Corp of Sharon, Mass.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline M. (Wood) Kelleher. He is the father of Gregg Kelleher and his close friend, Gail Merchant from Cape Neddick; grandfather of Alison L. Kelleher of Dover, N.H. and Mark W. Kelleher of Cape Neddick; brother of Mary M. Schoener of Canton, and the late Jeremiah, William and Joseph Kelleher and Pauline Delaney, Catherine Nelson and Margaret Howlett; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were private. Arrangements by the Dockray and Thomas Funeral Home, Canton, Mass.

Peter D. Hilton, 46

DOVER, N.H. - Peter D. Hilton, 46, of Martha's Way, died unexpectedly at his home Nov. 25, 2001.

He was born July 16, 1955, in Sanford, Maine. He attended Noble High School in Berwick.

He had been employed by GC-AAA Fences Inc. of Durham Road in Dover, N.H. He was an avid outdoorsman and sports enthusiast.

He was predeceased by his father, Carl Hilton.

Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Walter (Celine) Fiel; four brothers and six sisters; two stepsisters; one stepbrother; several nieces and nephews, as well as many beloved friends.

A funeral was held Friday at Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery, North Berwick.

Cathleen O'Brien, 30

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama Island - Cathleen Ann (Heeney) O'Brien, 30, of Freeport and Nimble Hill Road in Newington, N.H., died Nov. 25, 2001, from injuries that she suffered in a car accident in Freeport.

She was born in Nashua, N.H., a daughter of Shirley J. Ostrander and Robert A. Heeney, and attended schools in Wells, Maine. For the past four years, she lived with her family in Freeport.

She was a master scuba dive instructor for the Underwater Explorers Society in Port Lacaya, Grand Bahama Islands. She was involved with at-sea rescues, and was a fill-in diver for movies.

One of her interests was gourmet cooking.

Surviving are her husband, A. Craig O'Brien; mother and stepfather, Shirley J. and David P. Ostrander of Rochester, N.H.; three daughters, Jordan Nikkole Worthing, Amanda Taylor Worthing and Audrey Marion O'Brien; two sisters, Susan Orvin of Rindge, N.H. and Jeannette Weeks of Dover, N.H.; one brother, Robert Heeney of Old Town; and her maternal grandfather, Harold Whitney of Kittery Point.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Portsmouth, N.H. Burial was in Calvary cemetery in Portsmouth.

Jeanne G. Tozier, 80

RUMFORD - Jeanne G. Tozier, 80, of Knox Street, died Dec. 1, 2001, at Rumford Hospital.

Born in Rumford, a daughter of George W. and Marie A. (Roy) Goudreau, she graduated in 1939 from Stephens High School in Rumford as salutatorian. She received the Daughters of the American Revolution Medal and attended LaSalle Business School.

She was a secretary for attorney Peter MacDonald in Rumford for more than 30 years, retiring in 1970.

She was a communicant of St. Athanasius-St. John Church. She was active in the local Democratic Party and the Greater Rumford Chamber of Commerce and was a Girl Scout leader.

She married Frank A. Tozier in Rumford on April 2, 1956. He died Feb. 1, 1999.

Surviving are a daughter, Marianne Tozier-Shuris of Kennebunk; one son, John Tozier of Bridgewater, Mass.; three sisters, Pauline and Claire Goudreau and Priscilla Dupill, all of Rumford; five brothers, Maurice and the Rev. George Goudreau, both of Rumford, the Rev. Paul Goudreau of Holiday, Fla., Msgr. Joseph L. Goudreau of Fort Myer, Va., and Robert Goudreau of Woburn, Mass.; and two grandchildren.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Athanasius-St. John Church, Rumford. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Rumford. Arrangements are by Meader and Son Funeral Home, Rumford.

Mildred A. Brooks, 93

PORTLAND - Mildred Ann Brooks, 93, of Portland, died Dec. 2, 2001, at the home of a son, Kenneth Geer.

She was born in West Canaan, N.H., a daughter of Walter Waldo and Bertha (Lewis) Whittermore. She never finished high school because she cared for four of her eight brothers and sisters while her mother worked.

She was married to her first husband at age 15 and had the first of her 14 children that year.

During World War II, she worked at a clothespin factory. She was later a cook at the Visiting Nurse Home and the Jewish Home for the Aged.

She enjoyed camping, collecting marbles and traveling. When she was in her 90s, she rode on the Terminator amusement ride at Old Orchard Beach, her family said. She was an animal lover and cats were her passion. She was also known for her seven-course holiday meals.

Her husband, Alton Brooks, died in 1982, and a son, Roger Williams, and a daughter, Julia Delisle, also died previously.

Surviving are seven sons, Kenneth Geer and Robert Williams, both of Portland, Lawrence Williams of Connecticut, Gordon Williams of Oklahoma, Ralph Williams of California, Paul Geer of North Carolina and Glen Williams of South Portland; five daughters, Sharon Earley of Portland, Ramona Charlton of Baldwin, Rebecca Vance and Virginia Glover, both of Florida and Genevieve Decker of Wells; one stepdaughter, Pam Brooks of Portland; one brother, Charles Whittermore of Poland; one sister, Georgiana Whittermore of Portland; 48 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life was held Wednesday at Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland.

Gertrude R. Holbrook, 92

CAPE PORPOISE - Gertrude R. Holbrook, 92, a lifelong resident of Cape Porpoise, died Dec. 3, 2001, at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kennebunk after a long illness. She was the widow of Kendrick W. Holbrook, who died in 1989.

She was born Dec. 2, 1909 in Portland, Maine, a daughter of Almon and Hannah (Conley) Whitney, and attended St. Dominic's Grammar School and Cathedral High School in Portland.

For many years she was employed at the Kennebunkport Consolidated School now known as MSAD 71, and was also employed for many summers at the Shawmut Inn, in Kennebunkport.

She was a Communicant of St. Martha Church in Kennebunk. She was very active in the church with the Ladies Guild, of which she was an original member.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Gloria Leach.

She is survived by three sons; Kendrick W. Holbrook, Jr. and David H. Holbrook of Cape Porpoise, and Donald A. Holbrook of Kennebunkport; one daughter; Mary Anne Collard of Arundel; 17 grandchildren; many, many great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9, Thursday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at St. Martha Church, Portland Road, Kennebunk, with Rev. Laurent Laplante officiating. Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Burial will follow at the Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.

Linda La Pointe, 51

KENNEBUNK - Linda M. La Pointe, 51, a resident of Rusty Bucket Lane, Kennebunk, died Oct. 6, 2001 at the Maine Medical Center, Portland after a long illness.

She was born in Biddeford, on May 15, 1950, a daughter of late Norman Maxwell and Doris (Jellison) Nadeau. She graduated from Kennebunk High School.

She was employed by the Shape Inc. of Biddeford as administrative assistant for eight years. She was the former owner of the Kennebunkport Travel of Lower Village of Kennebunk for several years.

She enjoyed going up to her camp at the Moosehead Lake in Greenville.

She also enjoyed travel, bird watching, reading and being with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Donald E. La Pointe of Kennebunk; her mother, Doris Nadeau of Kennebunk; one step-son, Donald La Pointe of Amesbury, Mass.; three step-daughters, Denise La Pointe of Portland, Deborah La Pointe and Deanna Ruland both of York; two brothers, James Nadeau and Norman W. Nadeau, both of Kennebunk, one sister, Elaine Meyer of Kennebunkport; five step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Private memorial services will be held today at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, with the Rev. Robert Hewitt officiating.

Should friends desire, memorial donation may be made to the American Cancer Society Maine Division, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011 in Mrs. La Pointe's memory.

Fred Doubleday Jr., 88

CAPE PORPOISE - Fred W. Doubleday Jr., 88, a resident of Cape Porpoise, died Oct. 5, 2001 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, after a brief illness.

He was born in Prescott, Mass., in the area of the present Quabblin Reservoir on Feb. 23, 1912, a son of Fred William and Celia (Currier) Doubleday Sr.

He moved to Winchester Center, Conn. and he worked as a foreman at the Torrington Company before retiring in 1978. From 1990 to 1999, he lived in Farmington, Conn. before moving to Maine .

He was 65-year member of Eden Lodge A.F. and A.M. in Ware, Mass.

Recently, he enjoyed attending functions at the Senior Center at Lower Village in Kennebunk.

He loved trout fishing, playing bridge, and he was avid reader.

He was predeceased by his wife Ruth Jones Doubleday and his brother Roger Doubleday.

He is survived by his two sons, David N. Doubleday of Cape Porpoise, and F. William Doubleday of Vernon Hills, Ill.; three brothers Elwyn, Robert and James Doubleday and one sister, Lois Barnes, all of Amherst, Mass.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Burial will be at Quabbin Park, Ware, Mass., at the convenience of the Family. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Senior Center at Lower Village, 175 Port Road, Kennebunk, ME 04043, in Mr. Doubleday's memory.
