Benjamin Garrett, 64

OSSIPEE, N.H. - Benjamin F. Garrett, 64, of Brown's Ridge Road, passed away Oct. 4 after a long illness.

He was born Jan. 29, 1937 in Biddeford, son of Frank W. and Beryl (Severance) Garrett. He attended Berwick Schools and graduated from Kennebunk High School in 1956. He then earned his bachelor's degree in business finance at the New Hampshire College.

He had served in the U.S. Air Force for four years.

He worked at General Dynamics in Texas before returning to Maine. He had been International Finance and Logistics Export manager for Prime Tanning Co. Inc., in Berwick before retiring after 37 years.

Recently, he had relocated to a farm in Ossipee, N.H., fulfilling his wife's dreams. He was a very loving and devoted husband and father who will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

He was predeceased by a sister, Charlene Doucette.

Surviving are his wife of 19 years, Judith (Chadbourne) Garrett; one daughter, Jennifer Lyn Garrett of Portland; two brothers, Peter Garrett of Florida and Bruce Garrett of Kennebunkport; one sister, Sharon Bergeron of North Carolina; many nieces, nephews and a large extended family.

A funeral was held Monday at the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Rev. Gerald Scribner of the Congregational Church officiated. Interment followed in Hillside Cemetery, North Berwick.

Gail Klebacher, 66

CANTON, Mass. - Gail B. Klebacher (Ashworth), 66, died Oct. 4, 2001 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston after a brief illness.

Born and raised in North Plainfield, N.J., she attended St. Joseph's School in New Jersey, Mt. St. Mary's Academy in New Jersey and Emmanuel College.

She was a registered nurse at Overlook Hospital in New Jersey, Muhelberg Hospital in Plainfield, N.J., St. Joseph's Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, Milton Hospital, Mass Hospital School and the Chetwind Nursing Home. She was also the former director of Nursing at the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton. She has lived in Canton since 1971 and previously lived in New Jersey.

Beloved wife of Frederick R. Klebacher; mother of Susan M. Davis and her husband, William of Kennebunk, Christopher R. Klebacher and his wife, Marie of Stoughton, Missy G. Klebacher of Canton and the late Pamela G. Klebacher; sister of Patricia Mahon of New Jersey; grandmother of William and Robert Davis of Kennebunk and Kimberlee Klebacher of Stoughton, Mass.

Relatives and friends invited to attend a memorial service at Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington St., Canton, Mass., Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

donations may be made in her memory to the Gail B. Klebacher Nursing memorial Fund, c/o Canton Co-Operative Bank, 671 Washington St., Canton, MA 02021.

Stanley Lull, 85

KENNEBUNK - Stanley E. Lull, 85, resident of Pinewood Road in Kennebunk, died Oct. 2, 2001 at Southern Maine Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 19, 1915 in Westfield, N.Y., a son of Lewis D. and Nellie (Sawin) Lull. He graduated from Westfield High School with the class of 1933. He received a bachelor's degree from Alfred University in New York and received his masters degree and PhD in engineering from Ohio State University.

He was employed for many years by Bay State Abrasive Company in Worcester, Mass. and Jackson, Mich., where he was the head of the technical department until his retirement in 1978.

Following retirement he moved with his wife to Kennebunk.

He was a member of Christ Church of Kennebunk.

He is survived by his wife, M. Pearl (Kemp) Lull of Kennebunk; one brother, Raymond Lull of Bellville, Ohio; and one sister Sybil Manson of Long Island, N.Y.

A funeral service was held at Monday at Christ Church, Kennebunk, with Rev. Stephen Hastings officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Cynthia Maggiacomo, 32

SALEM, Mass. - Cynthia (Cindy) Ann Maggiacomo, 32, a recent resident of Salem, Mass., died in her late mother's home in North Beverly, Mass.

She was born March 22, 1969 in Beverly and attended schools there until her graduation from Beverly High School in 1987.

She was employed by McDonald's Restaurants for many years. She was a warm and generous person who enjoyed Red Sox baseball, traveling, bowling and spending time with her family. She will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her father Ed and one half-brother Philip of Beverly; grandfather Richard A. Wirling Sr. and Donna L. Wirling, her step-grandmother of Arundel; three uncles, Richard C. Wirling of Beverly, Mass., Lawrence A. Wirling of Peabody, Mass. and Richard A. Wirling Jr. of Old Orchard Beach; five aunts, Mary T. Wirling of Beverly, Mass., Charlene A. Wirling of Peabody, Mass., Pamela B. (Wirling) Thompson of Colorado and Wendy A. (Wirling) Morrison of South Dakota and Bernice E. Wirling of Old orchard Beach; and several cousins.

She was predeceased by her mother, Louise, her aunt, Holly and her grandmother, Virginia C. Wirling.

Burial will be at North Beverly Cemetery, North Beverly, Mass.

Elizabeth Neilson, 89

WELLS - Elizabeth "Betty" A Neilson, EDD, 89, a resident of Flintlocks Village, Wells, formerly of Jackson, N.H., died Oct. 4, 2001 at the York Hospital in York, after a brief illness.

She was born in West Medford, Mass. on Oct. 13, 1911, a daughter of William and Anatasia (Mahoney) Neilson.

She graduated from Medford High School in Medford, Mass., attended Boston Bouve College, the Northeastern University and graduated from Boston University Graduate School in Education of Doctorate, all of Boston, Mass.

She began her teaching at the Brimmer May School in Chestnut Hill, Brookline, Mass., then she went to Medford Schools system for several years then she went to Lowell State College where she became college professor, then she went to Boston College where she became professor and chairman in the Department in Health, Physical Education for several years. A few years later, she went to Kent State University in Kent, Ohio where she became Adjunct Professor, Department of Health Sciences. Later years, she also became president for American School Health Association in Kent, Ohio.

She was a special Consultant, Health, Workshop director for several colleges, high schools and several companies in Mass., N.Y., Chicago, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky, Rhode Island and Maine.

She was the founder and editor in chief at the Charles B. Slack Inc. in Thorofare, New Jersey "Health Values - Achieving High Level Wellness."

She was an author for Healthful Living Program, Personal and Community Health.

In her spare time, she was contributing author to "Journal School of Health," "Journal of Health, Physical Education and Recreation," the "Massachusetts Teacher," "Teaching About Drugs," "Teaching About Vision" and "Dental Health Today."

Over the years, her professional contributions: She was the chairwoman, president, Governing Council, Joint Committee, Delegate, Editorial Board, Membership Committee, National Advisory Council, Governor's Council for American School Health Association in Massachusetts.

She was on the board of directors for the Diabetes, the Heart Association, the Mental Health Association, all of Lowell, Mass., the Massachusetts Cancer Society, the Middlesex Tuberculosis and Health Association, she also was a vice president and board of directors March Against Dental Disease Foundation of Washington, D.C., and a member of the National Alumni Council of Boston University.

She also member of Massachusetts Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, New England Health Association, National Parks and Conservation Association, the Smithsonian Associates, International Union for Health Education, United Nations Association of the United States of America, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, National Business and Professional Women's Club, American Society for Association Executives, American Association for Higher Education, Royal Society for Health, American School Health Association Life Fellow and the World Organization of Editors of Medical Journal.

She received several awards: The American National Red Cross, Boston-Bouver College of Human Development Distinguished Services Award, Northeastern University Distinguished Alumni Award in Health Sciences and the William A Howe Award, American School Health Association.

She also received the National Honor Society for Women in Education, Pi Lambda Theta Royal Society for Health in England.

She was in Professional Recognition - The Who's Who in the World, the National Register of Prominent Americans, 2000 Women of Prominence, the Royal Blue Book, Community Leaders of America, Dictionary of International Biography, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in American Women, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in America.

She was the international contribution as delegate to the fourth International Conference for Health Education in Dusseldorf, Germany, fifth International Conference in Pennsylvania, sixth International Conference in Madrid, Spain and also delegate to First World Conference on Smoking and Health Education in New York.

She was served as president and board for first eight years at the Flintlocks Village, Wells.

She was a member of the St. Mary's Church of Wells.

She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers William, Robert and George H. Neilson.

She is survived by her special friend of 50 years, Marie Garrity of Wells and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church Eldridge Road, Wells, Maine. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford, Mass. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Should friends desire memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate Inc., PO Box 346, Augusta, ME 04330-0346 in Miss Neilson's memory.

John Spottiswoode, 83

ACTON - John P. Spottiswoode, 83, of Lincoln Drive, Londonderry, N.H., died Oct. 7, 2001 in the Elliot Hospital, Manchester, N.H.

He was born in Everett, Mass., on March 3, 1918. He was the son of the late John H. and Lucy (Langstaff) Spottiswoode. He had resided in Londonderry since July of 1998, formerly living in Acton, Maine for 20 years.

He served with the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II and was a recipient of two purple hearts and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service.

He is survived by his wife, Rita G. Spottiswoode, Londonderry, N.H.; two sons, John Spottiswoode, Kennebunkport and Alan Spottiswoode of Lynn, Mass.; one daughter, Dawn Myers of Londonderry, N.H.; five grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret Monterose, Mary Monterose and Virginia Mahoney, all of Massachusetts; also many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

There are no calling hours. Following cremation, graveside services will be held on Friday Oct. 12, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Memorial Giving Program, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, N.H. 03110-5032. The Peabody Funeral Homes of Derry and Londonderry are in charge of arrangements.

Walter Wilson Jr., 80

NAPLES, Fla. - Walter C. Wilson Jr., 80, a resident of Naples, Fla., formerly of Tewksbury, Mass. and Drakes Island, Maine died the morning of Oct. 2, 2001 in Naples.

He was the husband of Marjorie Ann (Proctor) Wilson born in Washington, D.C. on July 28, 1921, he was the son of the late Walter C. and Loretto (Walter) Wilson Sr. He was a graduate of Lowell High School, Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, Pa. and Harvard University class of 1944 where he was a member of the varsity football team and the Porcellion Club and the Hasty Pudding Club.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II. Prior to his retirement, he was the owner of E.A. Wilson Concrete and Oil Company of Lowell, Mass. and also had been the chairman of the board and president of Central Savings Bank of Lowell, Mass.

He was a member of the Hole in the Wall Country Club in Naples, Fla., the Cape Arundel Country Club in Arundel, a former member of the Vesper Country Club in Tyngsboro, Mass. and was a member of the former Yoric Club in Lowell, Mass.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Walter C. Wilson III of Naples, Fla.; two daughters, Susan Ann Jewell and her husband John of Nashville, Tenn. and Deborah Ann Blechman and her husband Richard of Tyngsboro, Mass.; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer Johnson of Nashville, Tenn., John B. Jewell IV of Columbia, Tenn., Robert B. Jewell of Franklin, Tenn., Melissa Ann Blechman of Boston, Mass., Richard N. Blechman Jr. of Somerville, Mass., Andrew Giles of Kennebunk, Elizabeth Ann Giles of New York City, N.Y., Peter Giles of Kennebunk, Amanda Wilson of Atlanta, Ga. and Nicholas Wilson of Andover, Mass.; great-grandfather of five.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Judith Ann Giles who died in 1982.

Funeral services will be private.

Dominick Zitoli, 80

RUMFORD - Dominick Zitoli, 80, of 19 Free St., died Oct. 5, 2001 at his home with his beloved wife at his side.

He was born Dec. 7, 1920, in New York City, the son of Genaro and Louise (Landi) Zitoli. He attended Gorton High School in New York City, the Long Island School of Drafting, the Electric Votech, the Radio Training Institute of New York City and the Wentworth Institute in Boston.

He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy as a machinist-mate first class aboard the destroyer "U.S.S. Abbott. He was retired from a U.S. Postal Service with more than 27 years of service in Rumsford as a letter carrier.

He was a communicant of St. Athanasius St. John Church and a member of the Robert Shand Post 1641 VFW, Napoleon Ouellette Post 24, American Legion, LeParasseux Snowshoe Club and Oakdale County Club.

An avid golfer, he enjoyed making and repairing golf clubs. He was also an accomplished painter who loved to paint landscapes, he also enjoyed dancing and traveling. On July 2, 1977, he married Mary Arita MacDonald of Rumsford.

Survivors include his wife of Rumsford; one daughter and her husband, Louise Ann and Clayton Child of Kennebunk; one son, Robert of Andover; three grandchildren, Eric Zitoli, Regine Chapman and Dominique Child; one sister, Mrs. Joseph (Anna) Sava of Albequerque, N.Y.; one brother, Alexander of Little Falls, N.Y.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Regine Gayer Zitoli in 1968.

Charles Arra, 82

OGUNQUIT - Charles Arra, 82, of Ogunquit died Wednesday, Oct. 17 at York Hospital.

He was born on May 1, 1919 in Somerville, MA the son of Patricio and Casilda Arra. He was a graduate of Needham High School where he excelled in sports. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II.

Mr. Arra was the trainer of thoroughbred horses. He had owned the Arra Racing Stables and had trained and raced in New England, Florida, New York, Maryland and Delware.

He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Arra, who died in 1999.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley (Connelly) Arra of Ogunquit. Two sons, Kenneth C. Arra of Ogunquit and Robert W. Arra of Cape Neddick, ME. One granddaughter, Ashley Arra. One sister, Josephine Fantegrossi of Needham, MA. One brother, Laurence Arra of Paris, France.

A funeral held Monday, Oct. 22 at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York. Burial was in the First Parish Cemetery, York.

Donald M. Bither, 89

PORTLAND - Donald M. Bither, 89, of Applegate Lane, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 21.

He was born in Manchester, Maine, a son of J. Milton Bither and Georgia Neale. As a child, the family moved to Bither farm in Linneus, Maine where he attended local schools and Ricker Classical Institute in Houlton, graduating from Houlton High School. He attended Ricker College and graduated from Colby College in 1935 where he was a member of Lamba Chi fraternity.

For thirty-five years he lived n Prospect Street in Portland, attended Woodfords Congregational Church, was a member of the Woodfords Club, and a former member of Kiwanis.

Mr. Bither was always interested in missions, especially C.A.R.E.

For many years he was an avid golfer belonging to the Purpoondock Club, and later to Gorham Country Club.

In 1979 the Bithers moved to their farm on Raymond Hill in Raymond where they spent summers, living on Jekyll Island, Georgia during the winter, until moving to Applegate in Falmouth in 1988.

Mr. Bither enjoyed woodworking and built and refinished several pieces of furniture for the family. He took great pride in his gardens and orchards, and was a licensed tree farmer.

While living in Raymond, he was a member of Fairlawn Country Club. During the winter he was a member of Jekyll Island Country Club and attended the Presbyterian Church. He was a Certified Public Accountant and was employed by Blue Cross of Maine at the time of his retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Ruth Larson, three sons James M. of Kennebunk, Stephen D. and Douglas N. of Portland, six grandchildren; Amy Johnson, Noelle Heckscher, Carrie Bither, Molly Bither, Samuel Bither and Jennifer Greenlaw, and four great-grandchildren; Eliza Johnson, Elijah McGee, Aubrey Greenlaw and Addison Greenlaw.

A memorial service will be held at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Saturday, October 27, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Shupe officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery in Falmouth.
