Edward H. Hagman, 83

WELLS - Edward H. Hagman, Jr. , died suddenly Oct. 21, 2001 after a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 1, 1918 in Boston, MA. The son of John H.S. Hagman and Louise (Dame) Hagman. He was the husband of the late Evely O. (White) Hagman and Maric J. (Dugay) Hagman. He has lived in Wells, ME since 1984. Previously of Everett, MA.

Attended Everett, MA public schools. Worked at J.F. McAdams & Bros., Chelsea milk tester. Enlisted in Army Air Corp in 1942, 20th Air Force HQ awarded good conduct medal, American Theater campaign ribbon victory medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater campaign. Cpl. - Meat - Dairy technician. Honorable discharged in 1946 at Ft. Devens, MA. Post officer worker 1947-1983 - 36 years., South Boston.

Member of the Sanford American Legion Post 0019. Member of the Sanford Country Club. Avid golfer. Liked to the called JR. Enjoyed helping others.

He was pre-deceased by brother Walter Hagman. Surviving are sister, Helen Vakley , Clearmont, FL. Stepson, Dennis J. Whall, York; Granddaughters, Michelle Whall, Melissa (Whall) Beyea, Wells, and Melanie Whall, York. Great granddaughter, Ashley Linda Bourgeois, Wells. Nephews - Robert Varley, Clairmont, FL; John Hagman and Wayne Hagman, Bridgewater, MA. Niece - Cheryl (Hagman) Potella, Stoughton, MA .

There will be a private memorial service, Everett, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Wells Public Library, Wells, ME in Edward Hagman's memory, can be made.

John E. Henchey, 76

KENNEBUNKPORT - John E. Henchey, 76 yrs., a resident of 10 Oceanview Ave., Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport, ME. died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001 at the Riverridge Health Care in Kennebunk.

Mr. Henchey was born in Lewiston, ME on June 24, 1925, a son of John J. and Laura Benson Henchey. He graduated from Cony High School in Augusta, ME with the Class of 1943 and served in the US Navy in the Seabees division in the Philippines during W.W.II. He graduated from the University of Maine in Orono.

He was employed by the city of Presque Isle as assistant tax assessor and assistant city manager for five years before serving as the city manger for 11 years. He then moved to Concord, New Hampshire where he was the City Manager for 10 years. He also served as the Town Manager for the Town of Cape Elizabeth for 7 years retiring in 1985 from town government.

Following his retirement Mr. Henchey moved to Bedford, New Hampshire and owned a NAPA auto parts store in Manchester, N.H. for 10 years retiring from there in 1995.

Mr. Henchey was a communicant of Saint Martha Church of Kennebunk.

He was a member of the Rotary Clubs of Presque Isle, ME, Concord, N.H. and Cape Elizabeth, ME and enjoyed fishing and flying.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Juliette Pomerleau Henchey of Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport, three sons Col. Michael C. Henchey of Yorktown, VA., Paul W. Henchey of Riverview, Fla., and John P. Henchey of Concord, N.H. and a daughter Teresa DeBenedictis of Arlington, MA., a brother Delbert A. Henchey of Strongville, Ohio and a sister Annabelle E. Ritchie of Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport. Eight grandchildren.

Visiting Hours will be held from 9 to 10:45 AM Thursday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM Thursday at the St. Martha's Church, Portland Road, Kennebunk with the Reverend Laurent Laplante officiating.

Burial will be held at 10 AM Friday at St. Mary's Cemetery, Elm Street, Biddeford, ME.

Should friends desire memorial donation may be made to the Catholic Charities Maine, 356 Route One Falmouth, Maine 04105 in Mr. Henchey's memory.

Lorraine Norton, 61

WELLS - Lorraine C. Norton, 61, of Sanford Road, passed away Oct. 9, 2001 after a long illness in York Hospital.

She was born in York, Aug. 26, 1940, daughter of Roland E. and Evelyn (Hanson) Hilton. She attended Wells schools.

She enjoyed being a loving mother, wife, and homemaker for her family. She loved gardening and took pride in her flower gardens. She especially loved her dog, Belle.

She was predeceased by her brother, James Hilton in 2000.

Surviving are her husband of 43 years, William Norton; three sons, Calvin and Dale of Wells, and Donald of Sanford; one daughter, Angela Norton of Wells; one brother, Roland Hilton of Lewiston; two sisters, Jeanette Norton of Wells and Linda Hanson of North Windham; and three grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Tuesday in the Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. Rev. Robert C. Cole of the Bethel Christian Church of North Berwick officiated. Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Robert Strange, 87

BRENHAM, TX - Robert Ferdinand Strange, a summer resident of Kennebunkport who lived near Brenham, TX, died on Sept. 17 in Houston where funeral and graveside services were held later that week. He is survived by hi wife, Annie Ray Watkin Hoagland; a brother, John M. Strange; a daughter, Marian Strange Cheatham and son, Robert F. Strange, Jr., and their families.

The deceased was born to Mary Mundy Strange and John Vanderveer Strange in Kennewick, WA on March 6, 1914. He was a 1935 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin where he was a member and president of Beta Theata Pi fraternity. He later served as an alumni president.

In 1942 he enlisted in the Army and after enrolling in officer candidate school began work for the Counter Intelligence Corp. For the United States Army Air Force. After achieving the rank of captain, he worked on security for the Atomic Bomb Project at Los Alamos, NM. After discharge he helped found an insurance company Strange and Strange in Houston and then in 1950 was appointed vice president of Heitmann Wholesale Hardware. This became Heitmann Bering Corte Company by merger in 1956.

In 1969 Strange retired to his ranch, Gay Hill Farm, outside of Brenham, TX where he pursued ranching and managed investments. He was a founder and director of Lockwood National Bank of Houston. He worked on the board of Goodwill Industries and assisted in the early days of local television. He belonged to many service organizations and was a deacon and an elder in his First Congregational Church. In Brenham he served on the board and as president of the Washington on the Brazos Association and was instrumental in erecting many historical markers and proclaiming scenic destinations in the community. Strange also was a collector and restorer of antique carriages and became director and president of the Carriage Association of America and a member of the American Driving Association. When in Maine he, as a member of the Kennebunk River Club, participated in social activities there.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.

Dorothy H. Varrell, 85

YORK - Dorothy Varrell, 85, of York died Thursday, October 18 at her residence.

She was born on May 24, 1916 in Lebanon, Me the daughter of Herbert and Mildred (Wentworth) Hanson. She was a resident of York for over 60 years.

She was a bookkeeper for over 30 years at the Austin Gas and Electric Co., and she had also worked for 10 years at the former Porteous, Mitchell & Braun department store.

Mrs. Varrell belonged to the Maine American Mother's Association, York Senior Center, and The Order of the Eastern Star Sarah Orne Jewett Chapter and Fadette Chapter #166.

Mrs. Varrell was predeceased by her husband, William W. Varrell in 1966 and was predeceased by a sister, Esther Celestino, of Larchmont, NY.

Survivors include her daughters, Sandra McCartney, of York Harbor and Candis Bridges of York. One brother, Herbert Hanson Jr., of Zephyr Hills, FL. One sister, Geraldine Waddell, of York Harbor. Five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren. Several Nieces and nephews.

A funeral held, Tuesday, October 23 at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, ME. Burial was in the First Parish Cemetery, York.

Roberta K. Kennedy, 92

CHARLOTTE, NC - Roberta K. Kennedy, age 92 years, a resident of Sunrise South, Rae Road, Charlotte, NC and a summer resident of Kennebunk Beach, Maine died Saturday at her residence after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Rolfe M. Kennedy, Sr. who died in 1985.

Mrs. Kennedy was born in Somerville, Mass. A daughter of Warren Cleveland and Helen A. Hodgkins Kendall. She graduated from Abbott College in Andover, Mass. Class of 1929. She was an active member of the Philanthropic Education Organization in Charlotte, NC and Kennebunk, ME.

She was a 50 year member of the Carmel Country Club of Charlotte, NC. In the summer months in the Kennebunk's she was an active member of St. Ann's Church of Kennebunkport, ME.

She is survived by two sons Rolfe M. Kennedy, Jr. of Maumello, Ark. and Warren c. Kennedy of charlotte, NC. Four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 2 PM Friday, Oct. 26 at Hope Cemetery, Portland Rd., Kennebunk, ME with the Rev. Daniel Riggall of St. David's Episcopal Church, officiating.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to St. Ann's Church, Ocean Avenue, Kennebunkport, Maine 04046 or to St. David's Church, Route 1 South, Kennebunk, Maine 04043.

Ray Harrington, 75

KENNEBUNK - Ray Hodgman Harrington Jr., 75, resident of Portage Way in Kennebunk died Sept. 30, 2001 at the Kennebunk Nursing Center following a long illness.

He was born March 8, 1926 in Greenwich, Conn., a son of Ray H. and Mildred (Thomas) Harrington Sr. He graduated from Greenwich High School and received a bachelor's degree in electronics engineering from the University of Connecticut.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was employed for many years as an electronics engineer at Loral Electronics Company and Singer Inc. until his retirement in 1984.

He was an active member of the American Legion of Greenwich, Conn., serving on the Drum Corps and was also a member of the First Congregational Church of Old Greenwich.

He moved to Kennebunk with his wife in 1991.

He was predeceased by two sisters Elizabeth Harrison and Nancy Abbott.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Beverly A. (Bridges) Harrington of Kennebunk and one daughter Nancy Horn of Kennebunk.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Pine Grove Cemetery, Alfred Road, West Kennebunk with the Rev. Stephen Espling officiating.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101-2406, in Mr. Harrington's memory.

Pauline Hall, 82

YORK - Pauline "Sis" Elizabeth Hall, 82, of Victoria Court in York Harbor, died Sept. 26, 2001, at York Hospital.

She was born April 21, 1919, in York, a daughter of Alden and Agnes (Voudy) Gilchrest, and graduated from York High School.

She worked as an account representative for Central Maine Power for 27 years.

She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York and was the first woman assessor for the church. She was also a member of the church Diaconate, Women's Fellowship and Supper Club. She was the leader of the Memorial Committee and donated the hall (handicap) ramp to the church. She was one of the leading donors for the new doors in the church between the Narthex and church.

She was a former member of the York School Committee and was a Past Matron and member of Fadette Chapter Order of Eastern Star in York. She had been a tireless volunteer at York Hospital for many years.

She was the recipient of the Marty Ulan Citizenship Award presented to her by the York Rotary Club in 1996 and the Points of Light Award presented to her by Foster's Daily Democrat in 1998.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roland F. Hall who died in 1992; her mother, Agnes (Voudy) Gilchrest Sullivan, who died in 1986 and by a brother, George Gilchrest, who died in 2000.

Surviving are one son, David Hall of Kennebunk; two brothers, Kenneth and Betty Gilchrest of Brooksville, Fla. and Edward and Hilda Gilchrest of Milo.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York. Interment will follow in the First Parish Cemetery. Reception in Moody Hall will follow the burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Parish Congregational Church, 180 York St., York, ME 03909.

Brandhorst-Gamboa

Daniel and Ron and their son, David; victims of United Airlines Flight 175 on Sept. 11, 2001. Dear friends of Donato Tramuto and Jeffrey Porter of Ogunquit. A celebration of their lives will be held on Saturday at 11 o'clock at the Ogunquit Baptist Church, 175 Shore Road, Ogunquit.

Thelma Donnell, 90

SANFORD - Thelma M. Donnell, 90, of School Street died Sept. 25, 2001 at home.

She was born in East Rochester, N.H., a daughter of Albert and Pauline (Calef) Moulton. She graduated from Sanford High School in 1932 and Gorham Normal School in 1934.

She was a member of the Crossroads United Methodist Church in Sanford and Bauneg Beg Grange in North Berwick. She was past matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Springvale.

She belonged to a sewing circle at one time.

Surviving are her husband of 67 years, Elwyn Donnell; one daughter, Mrs. Jeffrey (Priscilla) Lane of Sanford; one sister, Pauline Breary of York; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Friday at the Oakdale Cemetery. The Rev. James Nason of the Crossroads United Methodist Church officiated. Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Dorothy Goode, 89

YORK - Dorothy Silver Goode, 89, formerly of Route 1, died Sept. 24, 2001, at the Harbor Home, York Harbor.

She was born in Moose Mountain, New Brunswick, Canada, a daughter of James P. and Josephine (Kinney) Silver, and graduated from Niagara Falls (N.Y.) High School.

She formerly resided in Keene, N.H., Rumford and Augusta for many years. She moved to York in 1958.

She was an insurance saleswoman and a bookkeeper.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher Church of York and a former communicant of St. Mary's Church of Augusta.

Her husband, Leo R. Goode, died in 1994, and a son, Robert J. Goode, died in 1966.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews, including Susan Collins Clark of Kennebunkport.

A funeral Mass was held Friday at St. Mary's Church, Augusta. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Augusta. Arrangements are by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.
