FARMINGTON, Conn. - Albert Joseph Ashley, 86, a longtime summer visitor at Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport and Springvale, the father of Albert Ashley of Ross Road, Kennebunk, and a lifelong resident of 92 East Main St., Terryville, Connecticut and most recently of Village Gate Retirement Home, Farmington, Conn., long known as "The Bicycle Man," died on Nov. 14, 2001 at the Bristol Hospital, Bristol, Conn., following foot surgery and a lingering illness.

The husband of the late Irene (Wysenski) Ashley, he was the father of three children, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was best known in recent years as "The Bicycle Man of Terryville," because of his personally rebuilt bicycles he sold at bargain prices from his front lawn on East Main St., Terryville. When queried about "How much did you get for that one?" He would often reply: "Two bucks! The lady couldn't afford much and the kids needed a bike." His grandchildren from Maine and Massachusetts always looked forward to a visit from Gram and Granf who usually toted along a recently refurbished bike or two.

He retired from the New Departure Division of General Motors where he was employed for 32 years. He was a founding member of the then Pequabuck Political and Social Club and was a communicant and eucharistic minister of St. Casimer's Church, a member of the Terryville Senior Citizen's organization and with his late wife, Irene, was a New England Polka Champion. He was also known for having built one of the first, if not the first, inground swimming pools in the area. This was no mean feat since he dug the 16-by-32 hole by hand with a shovel, mixed the cement and completed the entire project including a pool house all by himself. Because of his brute strength his grandchildren, nieces and nephews called him, "The strongest man in the world."

He traveled extensively with his late wife and later with his companion, Evelyn Williams, throughout the United States to Hawaii, Europe and Panama. He loved visiting in Maine and Cape Cod with his grandchildren and boasted of his many summers at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport.

Ashley of Cromwell, Conn. and Florida, Walter Ashley of Florida and Robert Ashley of Lake Guarda, Unionville, Conn.; two sisters, Gladys Makara of Terryville, Conn., and Florida Newman of North Carolina.

Faith Littlefield, 62

BAR MILLS - Faith "Coach" Littlefield, 62, of Route 112, passed away Nov. 18, 2001, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She graduated from Wells High School in 1958, president of her class. She earned her B.S. in physical education at Yankton College in South Dakota.

For more than three decades, she was an integral part of the interscholastic athletic scene in southern Maine. Since 1966, she had been employed as a physical education teacher at Bonny Eagle High School in Standish and served in a variety of coaching capacities during that time. For 36 seasons, she guided the fortunes of the Bonny Eagle field hockey program, a program that earned five conference titles, 10 regional championships, and seven state championships in that time. A pioneer in Maine women's athletics, Coach Littlefield's teams won the first three state championships ever awarded in field hockey (1976-1978) and sported a 42-game unbeaten streak in the process. Her squads "three-peated" in 1983-1985 and proved victorious in four consecutive overtime playoff contests in winning the 1984 crown. A four-time Maine High School Field Hockey Association Coach-of-the-Year, she was featured in a 1985 book written by Michael D. Kochler titled "America's Greatest Coaches."

Numerous athletes under her tutelage were named all-state performers in field hockey, and countless others went on to play the game in college. What was a constant throughout the history of Coach Littlefield's program was her self-professed motto, "It is not where you start that matters, but where you finish."

More important than her records, she served as an inspiration to several generations of Bonny Eagle students. She was a dedicated, caring teacher who gave of her time, talents, and money to help Bonny Eagle students from all walks in life. Those who knew her well will describe the essence of the real Faith Littlefield - demanding and competitive, yet simultaneously kind-hearted and caring. A champion of the underprivileged, on more than one occasion, she anonymously purchased a pair of sneakers for a young person who wanted to participate in athletics, but could not afford the accouterments.

She is survived by one brother, Gary Littlefield of Wells; one twin sister, Hope Roff of Ypsilanti, Mich.; one niece, Kristin Basanta; and one nephew, Andrew Ruff, both of Michigan.
