Marjory Emmons, 86

KENNEBUNKPORT - Marjory E. Emmons, 86, of Pier Road at Cape Porpoise, died July 13 2001, at St. Andre Health Care Facility in Biddeford.

She was born in King Township, Ontario, a daughter of Albert J. and Ruby Violet (Hilliard) Stuart, and attended local schools and nurses' training there. She worked as a nurse in Canada and locally at the former Notre Dame Hospital in Biddeford.

She was a member of the Church on the Cape in Cape Porpoise, the Pythian Sisters and Ivy Temple, and enjoyed traveling.

Surviving are two sons, Paul H. of Cape Porpoise and Stuart J. Emmons of Shapleigh; one brother, Albert James Stuart of Aurora, Ontario; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

There were no services. Burial was in King City (Ontario) Cemetery. Arrangements were by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Ruth Florest, 87

NORTH BERWICK - Ruth Frances Florest, 87, formerly of North Berwick and Providence, R.I., passed away July 23, 2001 at RiverRidge Center in Kennebunk.

She was born Oct. 5, 1913 in Wells, daughter of John and Blanche (Curtis) Gerow. She attended Wells schools and Berwick Academy.

She had been employed at the RAU Mfg. Co., in Providence, R.I. assembling metal uniform buttons for 40 years.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, Fred Florest.

Surviving are one sister, Irene Wormwood of Wells; one niece, Camilla Salls of Sarasota, Fla.; two nephews, Roger Morse of Warwick, R.I. and Curtis Wormwood of Wells.

Visiting hours will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick. There will be no funeral. Interment Monday in the Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, R.I. Arrangements by Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Edith Giles, 75

KENNEBUNK - Edith Giles, 75, a resident of Cat Mousam Road, died July 23, 2001 at Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford, after a long illness.

She was born on July 2, 1926 in Boothbay Harbor. She was the daughter of Amos and Phyllis Irene (Barter) Barter and attended schools there.

She moved to Kennebunk in 1959 from Boothbay Harbor and was employed for many years at the Kesslen Shoe Company.

She enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching, and was an avid Red Sox fan.

She was predeceased by her husband Frederick A. Giles Sr., who died in 1996.

Survivors include one son, Frederick Giles of West Kennebunk; one daughter, Diane L. (Giles) Nichols of Kennebunk; two brothers, Amos Barter of Boothbay Harbor, and Robert Barter of Barter's Island, Maine; five sisters, Gloria Brewer of Edgecomb, Dorothy Barter of Edgecomb, Marjorie Lewis of Boothbay, Evangeline Morgan of Reedfield, and Beatrice Blake of Kittery; four grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel, with the Rev. Glenn Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

Edith Giles, 75

Anne Grondin, 71

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Anne Theresa (Maroon) Grondin, 71, of East Grande Avenue, formerly of Portland, died July 16, 2001, at a Portland hospital.

She was born in Portland, a daughter of Wallace and Mildred (Lapin) Maroon, attended Portland schools and graduated from Portland High School in 1948. She moved here in 1996.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband and family. She liked to read and was very religious, her family said.

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Robert Grondin of Old Orchard Beach; two sons, Thomas F. of Kennebunkport and Timothy S. of Erie, Colo.; two daughters, Therese A. Conley of Portland and Jill M. Blake of Yarmouth; two brothers, William of Dover, Del. and Wallace Maroon of Orlando, Fla.; seven sisters, Florence Brisson of Stafford Springs, Conn., Carol King of Fairfield, Calif., Wallene Rague of Windsor Locks, Conn., Helen Clagg of Mansfield, Mass., Zelda Halloran of Richardson, Texas, and Donna Chamberlain and Ruth Maroon, both of Manchester, Conn.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A celebration of her life was held Thursday at St. Margaret's Church. Burial was private. Arrangements were by Blais Funeral Home, Westbrook.

James Hanlon Jr., 68

OGUNQUIT - James F. Hanlon Jr., 68, a resident of Green Needle Lane, Ogunquit, Maine, formerly of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., and Atkinson, N.H., died suddenly July 18 at York Hospital in York.

He was born in Cambridge, Mass. on Nov. 12, 1932, a son of James F. Hanlon Sr. and Evelyn Teeves. He graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School and then enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served during the Korean War.

He worked for New England Telephone for 34 years, as a testman and later inspector.

He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of New England, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW), as well as, the Knights of Columbus, Burlington, Mass.

He began spending summers in Ogunquit in 1984 and became a permanent resident in 1995.

He enjoyed playing golf, history and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Doris L. (Aucella) Hanlon of Ogunquit; three sons, James F. Hanlon III of Andover, N.H., Michael J. Hanlon of Wells, and Thomas J. Hanlon of Biddeford; two daughters, Evelyn L. Macaro of Plaistow, N.H., and Patricia J. Hanlon of Lowell, Mass.; eight grandchildren, Joseph, David and Danielle Macaro, Yanil, Jacob, Nicholas, Ashley and James F. Hanlon IV.

A funeral service was held Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Eldridge Road, Wells, with the Rev. Joseph Ford officiating. Interment was in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. Arrangements were by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Should friends desire, a memorial donation may be made in Mr. Hanlon's memory to the American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate, P.O. Box 346 Augusta, Maine 04330-0346.

Phyllis Jepson, 85

WELLS - Phyllis M. Jepson, 85, of Wells, died July 19, 2001 in her home.

She was born Aug. 6, 1916 in Wells, daughter of Oscar L. Jepson and Lena M. (Welch) Jepson. She was educated in Wells schools.

She worked for the First National Grocery Stores for 30 years. She was a covered bridge enthusiast. She enjoyed hunting and fishing at Moosehead Lake region, snowshoeing, gardening and lending a helpful hand to friends and neighbors.

She also enjoyed wintering in Florida and traveling to Nova Scotia in the summer.

She will be missed by many friends she made along her travels from her home in Wells to Florida.

She was survived by two sisters, Geneva St. Cyr of South Berwick, Barbara Sanville of Bridgewater, Mass.; two brothers, Harland Jepson and Charles Jepson, both of Wells; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Viola Bridges and three brothers, Donald Jepson, James Jepson, and Oscar Jepson.

A graveside service will be held Sunday at the Jepson family cemetery.

Howard Littlefield, 85

OGUNQUIT - Howard R. Littlefield, 85, of Bessbill Avenue, died July 16, 2001 at home after a long illness. He was the husband of Zana (Hasty) Littlefield.

Born in Wells, a son of Everett and Flossie (Stevens) Littlefield, he was a 1933 graduate of Wells High School. He participated in school sports and played on town teams. He followed professional sports and enjoyed deer hunting for many years.

He apprenticed to Archie Littlefield, a builder, until World War II, when he went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for two years. He started his own building business and ran it until he retired in 1982.

He built many homes throughout Ogunquit, York and Kennebunk. In retirement, he worked for Habitat for Humanity, York County. He greatly enjoyed working in his large annual garden of vegetables and fruits.

He served as overseer of the poor, as selectman, and on the town budget and school building communities. The selectmen recognized him for his many years of service, and he received the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen Award and an award from Habitat for Humanity for his service.

He was a 50-year member of the Ocean Lodge and Beaver Dam Granges.

Two sons, Howard Christopher and Robert, died previously.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, of Ogunquit; one son, Gary of Ogunquit; one daughter, Shirley Wagenseil of New London, N.H.; three sisters, Elsie Harris and Arlene Stromberg of Palmetto, Fla. and Gertrude Elwell of Wells and Gulfport, Fla.; two grandsons, Eric Littlefield of Ogunquit and Ian Kopsick of Cranston, R.I.; two granddaughters, Wendi Kopsick Fogarty of Manhattan, N.Y. and Lori Kopsick of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a great-grandson.

A memorial service was held Sunday at the Ogunquit Baptist Church, on Shore Road, with the Rev. David Clark officiating. Arrangements are by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Eugene Manning, 71

PORTLAND - Eugene E. Manning, 71, resident of State Street in Portland, died July 20, 2001 at Mercy Hospital in Portland following a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 25, 1929 in Portland, Maine, a son of Leonard F. and Elsie (Boynton) Manning. He attended Portland schools.

He was employed for many years at the Nissen Baking Company in Portland retiring in 1986.

He attended the Church of God in Portland.

He enjoyed dining and meeting people at Becky's Restaurant and Captain Newicks Restaurant both in Portland. He also enjoyed playing beano and various card games with his neighbors.

He is survived by one daughter, Christine Manning of Kennebunk; three brothers, William F. of Westbrook, Robert B. of Long Island, N.Y. and Len Manning of South Portland; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held today at 1 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, Stevens Avenue, Portland. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, ME Affiliate, PO Box 2208, Augusta, ME 04338 in Mr. Manning's memory.

Maurice Picard, 95

SACO - Maurice L. Picard, 95, of Old Orchard Road, died July 16, 2001 at Evergreen Manor.

He was born in Canada, a son of Hilaire and Josephine (Parent) Picard, and attended local schools.

He worked for Pepperell Mfg. Co. for 43 years.

He was a communicant of St. Margaret's Church in Old Orchard Beach.

He was an avid gardener and member of the Open Door, and liked playing cards with his senior friends.

His wife, Blandine Picard, died in December 1981.

Surviving are one daughter, P. Patricia Sangillo of Saco; three brothers, Damien, Rosaire and Prudent, all of Canada; and a granddaughter, Heather Proctor of Biddeford.

A funeral Mass was held Friday at St. Margaret's Church, Old Orchard Beach.

Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Sharon Poynter, 44

ARUNDEL - Sharon Poynter, 44, of Alfred Road, died July 17, 2001 at Maine Medical Center in Portland from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on July 8.

She was born in St. Louis, Mo., on Oct. 1, 1956, a daughter of Helen Colvin and was educated in Scarborough.

On Sept. 18, 1991, she married Richard Poynter in Biddeford Pool. He died July 8.

She had been employed at Konica Corp. for 14 years as a lab technician.

She was a member of the New Life Christian Fellowship Church and enjoyed collecting angels, shopping, knitting and gardening.

Surviving are one daughter, Carissa of Biddeford; her mother of Scarborough; one sister, Marie Clark of Biddeford; four nieces and two nephews.
