Antone Beaulieu, 92

OGUNQUIT - Antone N. "Tony" Beaulieu, 92, passed away on June 28, 2001, after a brief illness in Oviedo, Florida.

He was born on June 6, 1909, the son of Paul X. and Helene (Tondreau) Beaulieu in Van Buren, Maine. He was an avid outdoorsman, aspiring musician, and entrepreneurial businessman.

As a young man he worked for his father at the Beaulieu family grocery stores on Chapman Street and Main Street in Presque Isle, Maine. In 1932, he married Erma R. Ford and together they managed their own general store in the small town of Phair Junction, Maine.

In 1948, he and his partner brother-in-law Jack Dannert, purchased Tower's Drug Store in Ogunquit. Soon after, he built a home at 30 Berwick Road where he and his garden were well known landmarks for tourists and locals alike for more than 50 years. Under his management, the soda fountain became the store's focus, and the store itself evolved into a bustling center of activity for Ogunquit during the town's growth in the '50s and '60s. Tony developed a reputation as "The Muffin King" for his popular corn muffins and he regularly received dozens of "fan" letters monthly asking for the recipe. The drugstore was sold in 1968, but the ubiquitous Tony remained visible in Ogunquit in a variety of activities and small businesses.

He loved children and became a well-known fixture on the Beach Street bridge where he taught most of the kids in town how to fish. Always armed with a smile, a wave and a handshake, he was quick with the wit and full of advice for anyone within earshot. Without much formal schooling, he was wise in the ways of the world and he will always be remembered for his hundreds of snippets of sage wisdom. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish has lost one of its greatest all-time supporters.

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years Erma and one son, Gary, both of Oviedo, Florida; two sisters, Yvette Dodge of Kennebunk, and Doris Southworth of Barre, Vermont; one grandson, Michael "Murray"; and two great-grandchildren, Antone and Renee of Merrimack, N.H.
