Richard Howe, 87

ARUNDEL - Richard F. (Dick) Howe, 87, of Log Cabin Road, died the afternoon of June 13, at home after a long illness.

He was born in Springfield, Mass., a son of Arthur B. and Mary J. (Mulcahy) Howe, and was educated in Massachusetts schools.

On July 4, 1988, he married Elenore Johnson in Sugar Hill, N.H.

He attended Northeastern University at night while working as a machinist, and ended his corporate life as the general manager of a division of a large corporation. He has had, according to his own evaluation, a very rewarding and exciting work experience.

All of his employment activities have been in the forefront of technological advances from the onset of manufacturing: of radios, diesel and gasoline injection equipment, mass production of aircraft piston engines, the development and subsequent changeover to jets and the production of those engines. His exposure to the manufacturing phase of industry began in 1930 at a factory in Springfield, Mass., where he started out as an apprentice machinist and concluded his tenure there, ten years later, as a production specialist. Subsequently, he spent the next 11 years (1940-1951) at the Pratt and Whitney Division of United Aircraft Corporation in East Hartford, Conn. While there, he was a manufacturing engineer responsible for reviewing aircraft engine designs to determine the suitability of those designs with respect to their being able to be produced, and specified the tooling and equipment necessary to manufacture engines to those designs.

He was very involved with the programs that mass produced reciprocating engines that aided the allies to win World War II and was also a pioneer during the manufacturing transition from piston to jet engines.

After leaving Pratt and Whitney, he became a sales engineer with the Jarvis Corp., with a territory throughout New England. One of his customers, the Waltham Watch Company, offered him the position of manager of manufacturing, which he accepted. Internal problems affecting the long term future of the company prompted him to leave Waltham and return to Jarvis, this time with a territory in the Chicago area. After a highly successful sales effort in the west, he was requested to return to Connecticut to become general manager of the plant that produced the tools he formerly sold. Next, he became factory manager of a small company in Hartford that manufactured jet engine components.

Avco Corp., a recipient of a multi-million dollar contract to design, develop and produce the warhead-carrying end of the Atlas, Titan and Minuteman Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, was searching for a person to become superintendent of Experimental Manufacturing. He got that position and spent the next 16 years with Avco. While there, he was promoted to manager, Missile Systems, and then assistant plant manager of their Lycoming Division, in Stratford, Conn. Lycoming, in addition to the missile programs, produced gas turbine engines which powered 90 percent of the helicopters that flew in the Vietnam War. The Lycoming Division had 10,000 employees and $400,000,000 in sales.

He was closely associated with the missile programs from inception and was engrossed in the areas of research, design, development, testing, manufacturing and deployment of missile components, and became assistant to the vice president and general manager for missile programs.

When the missile program ended, he was posted to Paris, France to establish a facility to overhaul gas turbine engines from the Vietnam War. Returning from Europe, he became general manager of the Glasgow, Montana division of the Avco Economics System Corporation. That division was committed to converting the former Glasgow Air Force Base, a B-52 bomber and fighter facility, to a civilian operation. With the completion of that assignment in 1971, he retired and proceeded to pursue retirement activities.

Since retiring, he was able to count 30 endeavors in which he has been engaged. About one-half of those endeavors were as a volunteer. Some of his efforts paid very well, but most were minimum wage-type jobs that he accepted just to be able to keep busy. He did consulting work for a while, and then became the Zoning Enforcement officer and also the Wetlands Enforcement officer for a town in Connecticut. Subsequently, he obtained his real estate license and sold recreational, commercial, industrial and residential properties in Vermont and Connecticut.

Volunteering has always been a priority with him. Among his many activities, he once was chairman of a Red Cross chapter in a town in Massachusetts, and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in Connecticut, and Emergency Room Technician at a hospital in Connecticut, an ambulance dispatcher for a city in Florida, and a tour guide on the last surviving sailing oil tanker, in Honolulu.

He was a 16-year member of the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport. His passions were dispatching and working in the restoration shop. He would routinely assist his wife, Elenore, with landscaping and grounds maintenance at the museum. He and his wife completely restored the Butler house, which was donated to the museum, in exchange for lifetime residence.

He has traveled extensively for business and pleasure to 49 of the 50 states, and to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean islands, Europe and Africa. He was a member of the Mayflower Society.

He was pre-deceased by a daughter, Linda Grey, in 1998.
