Robert Benoit, 73

KITTERY - Robert Benoit, 73, of Kittery, formerly of Bedford, Mass. and York, Maine, died peacefully Aug. 28, 2001 at his home.

Born in Somerville, Mass., Aug. 10, 1928, he was the son of the late Donat and Eva (Marcuox) Benoit. He was a 34-year resident of Bedford before retiring to York, and recently to his current home in Kittery.

He was raised in Medford, Mass. He graduated from Suffolk University with a degree in journalism. In 1952 he worked as a beat reporter for the Fall River Herald News. He then became the second editor for the Bedford Times in Bedford, Mass., succeeding Anthony Spinazzola who went on to work for the Boston Globe. The Times was absorbed by Minute-Man Publications, which became a chain of eight daily newspapers. He became co-owner and executive editor before retiring in 1978.

He was very active in local government and served on the board of selectmen in Bedford from 1966-1968. He was an active member of the Rotary in York. He was also an Army veteran of the Korean conflict.

He was the husband of the late Barbara (Venuti). He was the father of Donald Benoit of Dorchester, Mass., Paul Benoit of Wilmington and Michelle Blaisdell of Hampton Falls, N.H.; brother of Lucille Bolton of Derry, N.H.; grandfather of Allie and Zachary Blaisdell.

A funeral was held Wednesday at the Bedford Funeral Home, Bedford followed by a funeral Mass at St. Michael's Church. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford, Mass.

Joan A. Cheesbro, 40

NORTH ADAMS, MASS. -Joan A. Cheesbro, 40, a resident of North Adams, Mass., died Sept 2, 2001 at Cooley Dickenson Hospital in Northampton, Mass., following a long illness.

She was born in Fall River, Mass., the daughter of Bruce and Joan (Goodwin) Cheesbro.

She was a special person who brought joy and comfort to those who knew and loved her.

In her youth, she was a frequent summer visitor to the Kennebunks.

Surviving are parents, Bruce and Carolyn Cheesbro of North Adams, Mass.; two brothers, Aaron Cheesbro of North Adams, Mass. and Michael Cheesbro of Wetherfield, Conn.; her maternal grandmother, Regina Goodwin of Kennebunk; and her paternal grandmother, Elmira Cheesbro of Williamstown, Mass.

She also leaves her longtime friend and companion Terry Major of Florence, Mass.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in St. Patrick's cemetery in Milford, N.H.

Betty Mellen

TUSCON, Ariz. -Betty R. Mellen, resident of Tucson, formerly of Wells, Maine, died Aug. 1, 2001 in Tucson.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roland Mellen.

She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Evanoff and Debra Graves both of Tucson, Ariz; one sister, Dolores Diehl of Atlanta, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, with Rev. Joseph Ford officiating. Interment will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011 in Mrs. Mellen's memory.

Robert Olson, 82

OGUNQUIT - Robert W. Olson, 82, resident of Cedar Log Lane in Ogunquit, died Sept. 1, 2001 at York Hospital in York, following a long illness.

He was born Dec. 9, 1918, in Iron Mountain, Mich., a son of Samuel and Agnes (Lindholm) Olson. He graduated from Iron Mountain schools, and received degrees from Northeastern University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass.

He served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and received several medals for his service.

He was employed as a plant engineer for Crompton & Knowles Loom Manufacturing Corp. of Worcester, Mass. for 29 years. Following his retirement he worked part time at the Hillcrest Resort in Ogunquit, for 20 years.

He was an active member of the Ogunquit Baptist Church and sang in the church choir for many years. He was a member of the Ogunquit Rotary Club serving as club secretary for 10 years.

She was predeceased by his wife Ruby G. Olson, who died in 1995.

He is survived by one son, Robert H. Olson; one brother, Clarence Olson of Shrewsbury, Mass.; one sister, Jean M. Anderson of Worcester, Mass.; and one grandson.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, at 1 p.m. at the Ogunquit Baptist Church, Shore Road in Ogunquit, with the Rev. Judson Stone officiating. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Cathryn Porter, 79

OGUNQUIT - Cathryn H. Porter, 79, of Marginal Avenue, died unexpectedly Aug. 30, 2001 at York Hospital.

She was born in Wells, Sept. 24, 1921, the daughter of Ray P. and Cora M. (Perkins) Hanscom and graduated from Wells High School. She graduated from the Boston Beauty Academy and had worked at many beauty salons.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of York-Ogunquit and enjoyed making quilts for York Hospital. She and her husband enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Silhouette Squares of Berwick.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter, who died May 8, 1992, and by her sister, Carolyn Davis, who died May 8, 1975.

She is survived by three nieces, Andrea Everitt of Virginia Beach, Va., Sharon Kalinowski of East Greenwich, R.I. and Sandra Fletcher of Auburn; two nephews, Drew Sweetak and Alex Sweetak, both of Mellington, Md.; three great-nieces, Kimberly Jo Everitt of Virginia Beach, Va., Robyn Kalinowski of Suffield, Conn., and Grace Ann Sweetak of Mellington, Md.; four great-nephews, Christopher Everitt of Virginia Beach, Va., Jack Sweetak of Mellington, Md., Robert Kalinowski Jr. of Warwick, R.I. and Christopher Fletcher of Auburn; one great-great-niece, Taryn Alyssa Formanek of Mellington, Md.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York. Interment was private in the Old Burying Ground in Ogunquit.

Albera Shaner, 79

OLD ORCHARD BEACH -Alberta S. Shaner, 79, a resident of Temple Avenue, Old Orchard Beach, died Sept. 1, 2001 at the SouthRidge Living Center, Biddeford after along illness.

She was born in Kennebunkport, on Jan. 1, 1922, a daughter of Albert and Fannie (Coy) Seavey. She graduated from Kennebunkport High School.

She was an office manager for National Distributor of Portland for several years also worked for Jerry Slivka P.A. of Portland for several years.

She was a member and past matron of the Aurora Chapter of the Eastern Star of Kennebunkport.

She loved to crochet, knit, read and be with family.

She was predeceased by four brothers Albert, Sonny, Dickie and Paul Seavey and a sister, Lillian Seavey.

She is surviving by her husband of 40 years of Herman Shaner of Portland; three daughters Sharon Newell of Gorham, Jean Humphries of Dunnellon Way, Fla., and Roberta McCoubrey of Old Orchard Beach; six sisters, Eleanor L. of New Jersey, Elizabeth Derham , Mary Bridges, Francis Derham, Sarah Bryant, all of Westbrook and Cynthia Bonsey of Libson Falls; and eight grandchildren.

Graveside Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Parish Cemetery, York Street, York, with the Rev. Timothy Hutchins officiating. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, 2900 Eisenhower Avenue, Suite 419, Alexandria, VA 22314, in Mrs. Shaner's memory.

Suzanne Shepherd, 73

WELLS -Suzanne (Young) Shepherd, 73, a resident of Chicks Crossing Road, died Aug. 28, 2001 at home.

She was born Oct. 10, 1927 in Haverhill, Mass., the daughter of Martin and Constance (Noyes) Bagni.

She is predeceased by her husband Robert Shepherd.

She is survived by four sons, Bruce Young of Atlanta, Ga., Brad Young of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, Bennett Young of Kennebunk, and Bryce Young of Wells; two brothers, Stewart Bagni of Sun City, Ariz. and Alan Bagni of Andover, Mass.; and four grandchildren.

There will be a private funeral service at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Alberta Strickland, 99

BRUNSWICK - Alberta E. Strickland, 99, resident of Mere Point Road in Brunswick, died Aug. 29, 2001 at Mere Point Nursing Home in Brunswick following a long illness.

She was born July 17, 1902 in Sackville, New Brunswick and graduated from schools in Canada.

She worked as a private duty nurse and in her free time enjoyed sewing.

She was predeceased by her husband Floyd F. Strickland, who died in 1939.

She is survived by two sons, Ralph N. Strickland of Wells and Carl Strickland of Equinunk, Pa.; two brothers, Ralph and Carl Mitton, both of Canada; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be private. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011, in Mrs. Strickland's memory.

Mildred Sullivan

YORK - Mildred V. Sullivan, 90, a resident of Harbor Home, York, formerly of Biddeford, died Saturday Sept. 1, 2001 at the Harbor Home following a long illness.

She was born in Indian Orchard, Mass., on July 13, 1911, a daughter of Alexander and Mabel Youmell. She graduated from local schools.

She was employed by the city of Springfield, Mass. as the assistant administrator to the Public Building for 58 years.

She was a communicant of Saint Mary's Church of Wells, and she enjoyed bowling.

She was predeceased by her husband John P. Sullivan, who died in 1983.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Blakely of Bonita Springs, Fla.; two brothers, Edward Youmell of N.C. and Clement Youmell of Agawam, Mass.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service at St. Mary's Church will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Timothy Wentworth, 75

YORK - Timothy Leo Wentworth, 75, of York Street, died unexpectedly Aug. 31, 2001 at York Hospital.

He was born Sept. 24, 1925, in Watertown, Mass., son of John and Mary Elizabeth (O'Brien) Wentworth.

He served in the Coast Guard during World War II.

During his career as a barber until his retirement in the 1980s, he owned many barber shops including the Razor's Edge in Sudbury, Mass. for 10 years and shops in Framingham, Mass. and Brimfield, Mass. He and his wife had moved to Brimfield in 1962 and to York six years ago.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher Church in York. He enjoyed playing shuffle board and working around his house. He was an opera fan.

He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ellen J. (Kenrick) Wentworth of York; four sons, Timothy Wentworth of Southbridge, Mass., Daniel Wentworth of Cooperstown, N.Y., William Wentworth of Pomfret Center, Conn. and Dennis Wentworth of Wales, Mass.; one daughter, Amy McCurdy of Raeford, N.C.; one sister, Mary Keenan of South Boston, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday in St. Christopher Church, York. Arrangements were by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

David Burgess, 57

SURESNES, France - David Steele Burgess, 57, son of Clifford and Mary Burgess of Kennebunkport, died Feb. 19, 2002 in Suresnes, France after a long illness.

He was born in Springfield, Mass. Aug. 13, 1944 and during childhood lived in Wilbraham, Mass.

He graduated from the Buxton School in Williamstown, Mass., attended Bard College which he left to spend a year in Ghana, teaching at the teacher training schools.

Upon returning to this country, he entered and graduated from Boston University, majoring in African studies.

His early career was in the editorial department of the Wall Street Journal, first in Springfield, Mass., where it was published, and then in the editorial office in New York.

In 1981, he was transferred to the Asian Wall Street Journal in Hong Kong where he stayed for two years.

In 1983, he joined the International Herald Tribune in Paris until illness forced his retirement.

In the early part of his retirement, he was given special assignments by the Herald Tribune covering international chess events. His most interesting assignment was that of playing against the German computer, "Deep Fritz" where he received advice from Garry Kasparov, Judit Polgar (the strongest woman chess player in the world) and the English chess master, Ray Kenne. He lasted for 24 moves. The story was published on the front page of the Tribune.

He and his family spent all their summers in Kennebunkport.

Besides his parents, he leaves his wife, Margaret (Dixon) Burgess; two daughters, Elizabeth and Claire; one brother, John of Kennebunk; one niece, Sara Gott; and one nephew, John Burgess.
