Gladys Berard, 71

WELLS - Gladys Arlene Berard, 71, resident of Thompson Street in Wells died Feb. 1, 2002 at York Hospital following a long illness.

She was born Jan. 20, 1931 in Providence, R.I. She attended schools in Providence.

She has been a resident of Wells for 28 years coming from Rhode Island.

She worked as a homemaker and enjoyed listening to many different types of music. She also enjoyed camping with her husband and spending time with her poodles Penny, Georgie and Ginny.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Genevieve Sylvestre and Katherine Pennington.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Clarence Berard of Wells; one daughter, Nancy Bridges of Wells; and one granddaughter.

Services are private. Spring Interment will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, 2900 Eisenhower Avenue, Suite 419, Alexandria, VA 22314 in Mrs. Berard's memory.

Francis Condon, 84

KENNEBUNKPORT - Francis W. Condon passed away Feb. 6, 2002.

He was born Aug. 23,1918, in Saco, a son of Francis and Helen (Murphy) Condon. He graduated from Thorton Academy, after which he attended Williams College.

A U.S. Navy Veteran, he earned his wings in Pensacola, Fla., then served as an Ensign in the Pacific Theatre, flying many different types of fighter planes off of aircraft carriers.

He married Beatrice Laprel of Kennebunk in 1944.

He was president of York Heal in Biddeford and Eastern Plastics in Sanford until his retirement, and then managed his property in Dock Square, Kennebunkport.

He served on the Board of Kennebunk Light and Power, was a member of Rotary, and past member of Kennebunkport Business Assoc. and Mariner/Marlin Assoc., Lifetime member of the Elks Club and 210 Shoe Manufacturers Organization.

An avid golfer, he was a member Emeritus of the Webhannet Golf Club, serving as its president for two years and treasurer for 17 years.

He leaves his wife Beatrice Condon of Kennebunkport; two sons, Michael and his wife Marie Condon of Del Ray Beach, Fla., and Scott A. Condon of Bridgeton; two daughters, Pamela Padget of Kennebunk and Jayne Condon Wozny of Kennebunkport; one sister, Helen Biron of Long Island, N.Y.; seven granddaughters; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday at St. Martha Church, Kennebunk, with Rev. Laurant Laplante officiating. Interment was in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Riverridge Rehabilitation Facility, 79 Cat Mousam Road, Kennebunk, ME 04043 in Mr. Condon's memory.

John Cronin Jr., 58

NORTH BERWICK - John "Jack" A. Cronin Jr., 58, of Bauneg Beg Hill Road, passed away peacefully at his home Feb. 6, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born May 11, 1943 in Lawrence, Mass., a son of John and Evelyn (Charpentier) Cronin. He graduated from Essex County Agricultural High School in Danvers, Mass. in 1960. He graduated with honors from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He served for the United States Army.

He had a presence. He was fun; always sharing his smile and effortless laugh. He was one of those special men who loved people and everyone loved him. He spent his life doing what he loved - being with his family and friends. Golf and fishing filled his free times.

He is survived by is mother, Evelyn Cronin of Andover, Mass.; his wife of 11 years, Dr. Maria (Mota) Driscoll Cronin; one son, Todd and wife Michelle of North Berwick; one daughter, Piper Cronin of Sanford; two sisters and their husbands, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas (Patricia) Martin of Haverhill, Mass. and Mr. and Mrs. John (Carol) Nash of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandsons, Colby, Nicholas and Joseph; one granddaughter, Moriah; aunts, uncles; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Saturday at the Holy Family Catholic Church, Sanford.

Patricia Donnell, 63

OGUNQUIT - Patricia Donnell, 63, of Ogunquit died Feb. 7, 2002 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born March 17, 1939 in York, the daughter of the late Harry Horning.

She is survived by her mother, Margaret (Adams) Horning of Portsmouth.

She attended local schools in York, and graduated from York High School.

She went on to college in the Boston area where she studied nursing. She became a licensed practical nurse, and over the years she worked as a private duty nurse throughout the seacoast area.

In her leisure time she loved the great outdoors, taking walks and camping. She loved to travel and over the years she has had camping trips and expeditions in Alabama, Hawaii and Gettysburg, Pa.

She was also an avid bird hunter. She always loved to spend time lobstering with her dear, loving, longtime companion, Pete Apgar of Ogunquit.

She was married to Robert Donnell Sr., who predeceased her in 1976.

She loved to spend time with her family and her grandchildren.

Besides her mother, she is survived by three sons, Robert, Jeffrey and Timothy Donnell, all of York; three brothers, Russell Horning of Edgewater, Fla. and Harry and James Horning, both of Kittery.

She will be deeply missed by her cherished five grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Jane Jacobs.

There will be no funeral services or visitation hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, Kittery.

Bruce Galeucia, 52

SPRINGVALE - Bruce W. Galeucia, 52, of Springvale, died Feb. 4, 2002 at the New England Medical Center, Boston, Mass.

He was born in York on Dec. 24, 1949, the son of Gordon and Priscilla (Gowen) Galeucia and was a graduate of Wells High School.

He retired as a game warden after 23 years of service for the state of Maine. He worked mostly in York county but also spent two years in the Dexter/Newport area. He had been employed by Shaine's of Maine, for the past three years.

He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was a wonderful cook and had a great sense of humor.

He is survived by his mother, Priscilla Galeucia of Moody; his wife, Stephanie Galeucia of Springvale; four sons, peter Galeucia of Rockland, Benjamin Galeucia of Springvale, Quinten Galeucia of San Diego, Calif. and Brent Galeucia of Springvale; two daughters, Kimberly Donahue of Dover, N.H. and Whitney Galeucia of Springvale; one brother, Gordon Galeucia of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Pamela Card of Moody and Paula Card of Belgrade; and three grandchildren, Sarah, Allison and Hannah.

A memorial service was held Thursday at the Cape Neddick Baptist Church, Cape Neddick.

George Pavlik, 82

MEDWAY, Mass. - George F. Pavlik, 82, of Medway died Jan. 31, 2002 at his home. He was the husband of Mary (Simeone) Pavlik. born in the Czech Republic on Dec. 10, 1919, he was a longtime resident of Medway and came to the United States in 1945.

Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Susan J. Pavlik of Medway and Nancy Russell and her husband, Steven of East Douglas; three sons, Daniel R. Pavlik of Medway, Mass., James A. Pavlik and his wife of Kingston, Mass. and Thomas F. Pavlik and his wife Pamela of Medway, Mass.; two grandchildren, Kaleigh and Tyler Pavlik, both of Medway.

A Funeral Mass was held Feb. 2 at St. Joseph's Church, Medway. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery, Medway.

Donations in Mr. Pavlik's memory may be made to the Major George F. Pavlik Jr. Scholarship Fund, c/o Medway High School, Holliston Street, Medway, MA 02053.

Josephine White, 102

ARDMORE, Pa. - Josephine White, longtime summer resident of Ogunquit (1943-1963), passed away on Feb. 8, 2002 at 4 a.m. at her home in Ardmore, Pa. Her daughter Joan White, survives her.

Her daughter modeled at the Ogunquit School of Painting and Sculpture during the school's heydays (1944-1964) in Perkins Cove. She and her daughter worked and resided with the T. Learning Smith family and were neighbors to Muriel and Norman Brazer of Millstone Manor at Brazer Point.

She was born to Henry and Ella White on March 23, 1899, in a log cabin on land adjacent to President Zachary Taylor, in the Taylor District at Daniels Post Office, Orange County, Virginia. She was the 10th child of 14 children born to the late Henry and Ella (Richardson) White. Her mother was born into slavery in 1858.

She had a long life and a right heritage. Her mother was her heroine, whom she loved every minute of each day for her entire 102.95 years. She told her daughter Joan, that the virtues taught by her mother were truth, honesty, and love of God and love of family. Her father was a jobber and foreman for the railroad industry. He supplied the manpower and talent that created the railroad tunnel under Baltimore Harbor into Washington, D.C.

She volunteered to work when her father became ill with black lung disease. She left school at the age of 11 years old to help earn money for the family. At that age, she became nurse girl to the young children of the mayor of Orange, Va.

In 1919, she moved to the Main Line of Philadelphia, and began developing an enormous life for herself and her family. We, the family, can tell you that the woman known as Mommy, Mom, Mother, Aunt Jo, Cousin Joe and Josie love, nurtured and encouraged generations of family members and all of her friends throughout her life.

Laurette Nadeau, 96

SPRINGVALE - Lauretta C. Nadeau, 96, formerly of Mill Street, died Feb. 4 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford.

She was born in Notre Dame de Ham, Quebec, Canada on Sept. 2, 1905, a daughter of Arthur and Marie Louise Payeur and attended school in Canada.

She came to this area in 1927.

Her first husband, Lorenzo Thibodeau, died in 1957. She then lived in Quebec for 37 years, returning to Sanford in 1998 after the death of her second husband, Telesphore Nadeau.

She was a seamstress and did alterations, made clothing and worked in several shops and mills in Sanford and Canada.

She was a communicant of Notre Dame Church.

Survivors include two sons, Leonard Thibodeau of Sanford and Fernand Thibodeau of San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Marc Payeur of Largo. Fla.; three sisters, Ursule Quellette of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, Therese Bouliane of Woonsocket, R.I. and Madelaine Charpentier of Belingham, Mass.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Gerald Belair, 72

BIDDEFORD - Gerald "Roger" Belair, 72, of West Street, died Feb. 3 at the Pine Point Center for Health Care and Rehabilitation in Scarborough.

He was born Sept. 23, 1929 in Biddeford, a so of e and Rose (McNeil) Belair, and was educated in schools there.

On Sept. 24, 1949, he married Pauline T. Provencal at St. Andre's Church.

He was a fireman for four years and spent many years as a heavy equipment operator in the area and more than 10 years with the National Semiconductor Corp. in South Portland. He also worked for Nappi Distributors in Portland for a few years. In retirement, he worked at Dutch Elm Golf Course for more than five years.

He was a member of St. Andre's Church and the Masonic Lodge (Dunlop). He enjoyed woodworking, landscaping and camping.

His brother, Jean, died in 2001.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years; three daughters, Paula Standley of Kennebunk, Janet Caron of Acton and Lisa Lewis of Biddeford; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Harold Ward, 79

KENNEBUNK - Harold E. Ward, 79, of Route 35, died Feb. 4, 2002 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born July 23, 1922 in Biddeford, the son of Harold and Irma (Lavin) Ward, graduated from Kennebunk High School and attended the University of Maine.

He left the university to join the U.S. Army and served in the combat engineering battalion. A decorated veteran, he served in the China-Burma-Indonesia theater and participated in constructing the Ledo Road.

After his discharge in 1945, he was employed on the family farm in Alewive and worked for the Wilton Mfg. Co. and the Lane Construction Co. as a heavy equipment operator, helping to build Loring Air Force Base in Limestone.

He is survived by two brothers, James of Kennebunk and Robert of Moody.

John McKay, 23

BIDDEFORD - John C. McKay, 23, a resident of Main Street, Biddeford formerly of Phoenix, Arizona and Kennebunk, died March 11, 2002 as result of injuries in an automobile accident in Kennebunk.

He was born in Biddeford, Sept. 17, 1978, a son of Rusty L. McKay and Joy Lynn Fancy Hosmer.

He attended Phoenix, Ariz. schools as a youth and was active in the West Central Little League Baseball programs in Arizona. In his early teens he moved to the Kennebunks and graduated from Kennebunk High School, class of 1996. In his high school years he was active in the football and wrestling programs.

Following his high school years he was employed with several area paving Contractors including T.S. Stanley Co.

He is survived by one daughter Taylor Lynn McKay and his companion Allison M. Keene; his father Rusty McKay, his mother Joy L. and Step-father Ronald Hosmer of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister Jami L. Sullivan of Oak Harbor, Washington; three half-sisters Rachel and Melissa Hosmer of Phoenix, Ariz. and Victoria Hale of Kennebunk; paternal grandparents Willis and Anita McKay of West Kennebunk, and maternal grandparents Richard Fancy of Winn, Maine and Bobbie Belierle of Spring Valley, Ariz.; one niece Kimberlynn Sullivan and one nephew Camerin Sullivan; godmother Sylvia McKay also survives.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Bibber Chapel with Rev. Richard Hamilton officiating. Interment was in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.
