Tribute to a friend

By Kate Witham and friends of Avian Monti

We salute our friend, the proprietor of the Brendan Inn, Avian Monti, who has passed before us on March 21, 2002.

We will always be inspired by her commitment to helping others and her generosity to lending a compassionate hand to our community. It has been written "Any definition of a successful life must include service to others."

Whether she was hosting a progressive dinner for the Library, providing a meeting space for the kickoff of the Hospice Foundation Hope Garden, or preparing an entrŽe for the First Annual Gary Pike Wine Tasting, her contributions were most generous.

The organizations from Kennebunk could always rely on Avian for a positive response when asked for a donation.

A "Night at the Brendan Inn" could be found on many silent auction lists . When told of her passing one of the foundation leaders first comments was "This is a huge loss to our community".

Avian came to the Kennebunk Community from Chicago, where she was passionately committed to the education of that city's youth. In particular she was energized by her work with at-risk children, a legacy that was a continuation of her involvement in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.

As she began her transition from public education in Chicago, Avian had "scouts" in Kennebunk, looking for the right house to set up an inn. These dear friends, Robert Bartley and John Manzo, finally found the "right place" - a large unfinished house on Fletcher Streeet that had the potential to become the gathering place Avian had long envisioned. The rest is history.

What is not so visible to the eye is the unique way that Avian reached out to guests, lodgers, workmen and friends of many stripes. Those who lived at the Inn in a transitional phase of their lives recount with warmth and tenderness their time spent here. For Avian was more than an innkeeper, she was a people-keeper , a sort of soul-keeper who was deeply interested in each and everyone who came across her path.

Nor was Avian's time and energy limited to her houseguests and many personal friends. Avian took time to travel to Portland to attend meetings of the World Affairs Council and bring back information of global interest. Locally, Avian was a generous friend and supporter of the International Women's Club of New England based in York, Maine. Within days of her membership in the club, Avian opened her home to the IWCNE book club as its regular meeting place.

Avian Monti had a special gift for balance that her friends will remember with gratitude. She seemed as comfortable in her familiar midwestern Chicago as she was as a newcomer in this solid New England town.

Most of us yearn to leave a mark where we have walked.

Avian Monti can rest easily as we honor her place in Kennebunk and in our hearts. Teachers are like that, they teach by example. Good-bye dear Avian, the sun shines on the Inn today. And we know you are part of the light it brings to us.
