William Hills, 34

WELLS - William "Billy" Hills, 34, of Highpine Trailer Park, died May 15, 2002 at his residence after a long illness.

He was born Jan. 22, 1968 in Manchester, N.H., the son of John and Theresa (Eaton) Hills and received his GED from Goffstown (N.H.) High School.

He was employed with his father's surveying company before moving to Tampa, Florida and working at Citi-Corp Bank in its Foreign Exchange Division.

He returned to New England in 1997 living in Portland and Wells, Maine.

An accomplished musician, he enjoyed playing the piano and would volunteer his time at local organizations to play for them.

He is predeceased by two sisters, Lisa Eaton and Jennifer Hills.

Survivors include his parents of Goffstown, N.H.; two brothers, John E. Hills of New Boston, N.H., and Jeffrey A. Hills of Manchester, N.H.; one sister, Amy L. Starr of Goffstown, N.H.; several nieces and nephews; and two close friends, Paul Goodridge of Wells, and Joe Murphy of North Berwick.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boston Living Center, 29 Stanhope St., Boston, MA 02116.

Diane Sanders, 59

YORK - Diane Lenna Sanders,, 59, of York, formerly of Phillips, died May 19, 2002 at York Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

She was born March 15, 1943 in Farmington, a daughter of Leon M. and Dorothy (Hinkley) Sanders. She graduated from Phillips High School in 1961. She received her bachelor of science degree in education from Farmington State Teachers College in 1965, and her master of science degree in education from the University of Maine, (USM) Portland-Gorham in 1971.

She taught in York school system for 31 years, teaching grades five and six in English, language art, reading, social studies and computer technology. She served as the language arts coordinator for five years.

She was involved in many projects such as The Writing Process Curriculum, District Recertification, and the District Technology Committee which wrote Project Point. She was active in the York Teachers' Association and served as its president, and was a member of the National Education Association and the Maine Education Association. She was also active in the following organizations: (past state president), York County Retired Teachers Association (secretary), and Delta Kappa Gamma (Iota Chapter and Alpha Psi State Maine). She was past president of the Iota Chapter and served on many committees. Her service to Alpha Psi State Maine included recording secretary, second and first vice-president, and president from 1997-1999. She attended and assisted at many international and regional conferences.

She enjoyed reading, traveling, walking the beach, cross-country skiing, going to the theater, crafts, and working on the computer. She especially cherished her time spent with her three nephews.

Survivors include her mother, Dorothy Sanders of Phillips; one sister, Veronica Richter and her husband, Scott of Shutesbury, Mass.; three nephews, Stuart, Andrew and Ian Richter.

She was predeceased by her father, Leon M. Sanders who died in August of 1987.

Funeral services were held Wednesday from Phillips Congregational Church. Burial followed in Bray Hill Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at York Street Baptist Church.

Eleanor Clark, 96

SANFORD - Eleanor B. Clark, 96, of Sanford, died May 19, 2002 at the Newton Center in Sanford.

She was born on Dec. 23, 1905 in Acton, a daughter of Herman and Grace (Brackett) Buck. She attended local schools, and was a graduate of the Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H. She then attended Nasson College and graduated from there in 1927.

Following her education, she was married and moved to New Jersey. She returned back to the southern Maine area in 1976.

While in good health, she attended the North Parish Congregational Church. She enjoyed sewing, reading, and needlepoint, however above all things she enjoyed spending quality time with her family, whom she loved so dearly. She also had a great fondness for animals, especially for cats.

Predeceasing her is her husband, Willard Clark Sr. in 1981, and a son, Willard Jr. in 1992.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara (Frank) Papa of Sanford; six grandchildren, Christine, Michael, Charles, Carol, Keith, Victoria; and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Wednesday at the Milton Mills cemetery in Milton Mills, N.H.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, PO box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094.

Leona Lantagne, 74

SANFORD - Leona M. Lantagne, 74, of Sanford, died May 18, 2002 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford after several years of declining health.

She was born in Sanford on Jan. 24, 1928, a daughter of Rosario and Celestine (Bouffard) Morin. She attended Sanford parochial schools, was a graduate of Sanford High School and was a lifelong Sanford resident.

She has been employed over the years at local shoe shops, including Jagger Mills and, for many years, at the former Sprague Electric from where she retired.

She was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church.

Her husband, Alphe A. Lantagne, died May 10, 2002.

Survivors include one son, Paul Lantagne of Sanford; six daughters, Gert Morse of Cumberland, Cecile Lantagne-Bedell, Rita Lantagne-Chabot, and Irene Lantagne of New Hampshire; one sister, Edith Hamel of Florida; four brothers, Robert Morin and Paul Morin, both of New Hampshire, Real Morin of West Newfield; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass for both Alphe and Leona Lantagne will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday June 1 at St. Ignatius Church. Burial will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150-1160.

Arrangements are through the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, 29 Winter St., Sanford.

Edwin Nation

The Memorial Service for Edwin Alfred Nation will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. George's Episcopal Church in York Harbor.

Elizabeth Perkins, 93

KENNEBUNK - Elizabeth E. Perkins, 93, a resident of Ross Road, formerly of Kennebunk Beach, who died April 15, 2002, will have a graveside service 2 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2002 at the Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk, with Rev. Charles Whiston officiating.

Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

Elizabeth Perkins, 93

KENNEBUNK - Elizabeth Estelle Perkins, 93, resident of Ross Road in Kennebunk died April 15, 2002 in Kennebunk following a long illness.

She was born April 21, 1908 in Jersey City, N.J., a daughter of Charles Oliver and Marion Berry (Wentworth) Perkins. She graduated from Portland High School with the class of 1926 and attended Connecticut College and Pierce Secretarial School of Boston.

She was employed for many years as a school teacher and also worked at the Aircraft Defense Plant during World War II.

She was a member of South Congregational Church of Kennebunkport. She was active with the Brick Store Museum of Kennebunk and was also a member of the Kennebunkport Historical Society.

She enjoyed spending time researching genealogy.

She is survived by several cousins.

A private graveside service will be held in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk later in the spring.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Madeline Robinson, 76

KENNEBUNKPORT - Madeline Elizabeth Robinson, 76, resident of School Street in Kennebunkport, died April 12, 2002 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford following a long illness.

She was born Sept. 7, 2002 in Kennebunkport, a daughter of Earl and Blanche (Wildes) Brooks. She attended Kennebunkport schools.

She was a lifelong resident of Kennebunkport and was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Lower Village.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and doing various types of crafts but mostly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Dwight L. Robinson who died in 1974, one daughter Mary Philbrick who died in 1998 and two brothers, Richard and Carl Brooks.

She is survived by two daughters, Gloria Pierce of Kennebunkport, and Sylvia Boomer of Lubec; two brothers, Warren and Donald Brooks both of Kennebunkport; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services are private.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Wildwood Women's Auxiliary, Attn: M. Ricker, 3 Brown's Lane, Kennebunkport, ME 04046 in Mrs. Robinson's memory.

William Byrnes

NEW MEXICO - William H. "Bill" Byrnes formerly of Maine, died April 8, 2002 in New Mexico.

He was born on Nov. 25, 1944, a son of William F. and Geraldine (Gunther) Byrnes.

He was predeceased by his son William A. Byrnes in 1993 and a brother Dennis Byrnes in 1996.

He is survived by one son, Scott and his wife Jennifer Byrnes of Arizona; two daughters Cindy Byrnes of New Hampshire and Candace Byrnes of Iowa; one brother, Timothy Byrnes of Old Orchard Beach; three sisters, Geraldine Johnson of Rhode Island, Colleen Witt of Texas and Terrie Thomas of Florida; and three grandchildren.

Services are private.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Michael Carter, 42

SANFORD - Michael L. Carter, 42, resident of Pinewood Drive, died April 11, 2002 at his residence.

He was born Sept. 17, 1959 in Kittery, a son of Glenn M. and Lydia M. (Kimball) Carter. He graduated from Somerset High School in Somerset, Mass., with the class of 1978 and received an associate's degree in graphic arts from Springfield Technical College in 1980.

He was a 12-year resident of Sanford coming from Wells and Somerset, Mass.

He was employed as an assistant manager at a local convenience store and most recently had been working as a nurse's aide at local nursing homes.

While in Somerset, Mass., he achieved the status of Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 2 of Somerset, Mass. He enjoyed spending free time collecting antique bottles, working around his home and spending time with his beloved cats Hopscotch, Honeybun and Barley.

He is survived by his parent of Somerset, Mass.; two sisters, Melissa Drapeau of Fall River, Mass. and Glenna Hoyle of Seekonk, Mass.; three nephews; one niece; several aunts; uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, with Rev. Herb Henry officiating. Interment will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

Alexander D'Ascanio, 83

FORT MYERS, Fla./Kennebunk - Alexander Peter D'Ascanio, 83, a resident of Shell Point Blvd., Ft. Myers, Fla., formerly of Kennebunk, died April 9, 2002 in Fort Myers after a long illness.

He was born in Kennebunk, on Jan. 9, 1919, a son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Perillo) D'Ascanio. He graduated from Kennebunk High School with the class of 1938 where he played on the high school football team during an undefeated season. The point total for that season was Kennebunk 223 /opponents 0.

He served in United States Coast Guard on the USS Hibiscus during World War II.

He owned and operated D'Asancio Plumbing, Heating and Electrical Contractors in Kennebunk from 1953 until his retirement in 1983.

He was member of the VFW of Kennebunkport where he served as an officer and Past Commander, he was a 40-year member of the Washington Hose Company Fire Station of Lower Village and also served as vice president of Kennebunkport Dump Association during the 1970s.

He was an avid football fan and had a partial ownership interest in the Portland Sea Hawks semi-professional football team in the early 1960s. He was a season ticker holder for many years with the New England Patriots.

He is predeceased by his brothers Anthony and Paul D'Ascanio.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Geraldine (Murphy) D'Ascanio of Ft. Myers, Fla.; one son, Alexander Peter "Skip" D'Ascanio of Kennebunk; one daughter, Sheila D'Ascanio Matthews of Cape Porpoise; four stepsons, Dwight Boucher of West Newfield, Brian Boucher of Marshfield, Mass., Jonathan Boucher of Otter Creek, and Mark Boucher of Cape Elizabeth; two sisters, Marie Cabana of Saco and Josephine Kezar of Kennebunk; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday May 3, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, where a Memorial Service will be held at Saturday May 4, at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.
