Priscilla Flannery, 90

CAPE PORPOISE -Priscilla A. Flannery, 90, resident of Ward Road in Cape Porpoise died April 13, 2002 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born Dec. 16, 1911 in Summerville, N.J., a daughter of Samuel and Winifred (Trueman) Armstrong. She graduated from Dumont High School in Dumont, N.J. and later attended Lady's College at Mt. Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada majoring in Fine Arts.

She worked at W&J Sloane in New York City.

Upon retirement she moved to Cape Porpoise in 1969 with her husband where she owned and operated Paddy's Cove Antique Shop for 30 years.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Robert E. Flannery of Cape Porpoise; two daughters, Patricia Carnegie of Upton, Mass. and Carroll Christy of Lambertville, N.J.; one son, Kevin Armstrong Flannery of Corolla, N.C.; one sister, Mary Ellen Hikade of Kennebunkport; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday May 4, in St. Martha Church, Portland Road, Kennebunk with Rev. Laurent LaPlante officiating.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, PO Box 28, Cape Porpoise, ME 04014 or to the Kennebunkport Health and Nursing Service, PO Box 367, Kennebunkport, ME 04046 in Mrs. Flannery's memory. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Lois Hatch, 66

WELLS - Lois A. (Locke) Hatch, 66, of Littlefield Road, died April 10, 2002 at Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford, after a long illness.

Born Feb. 27, 1936 in Durham, N.H., she was the daughter of Arthur and Mildred (Dudley) Locke. She had lived in Kennebunk for many years prior to moving to Wells eight years ago.

She had been employed at the Corning Company in Kennebunk, prior to her retirement.

Survivors include four sons, Steven Hatch of Sanford, Scott Hatch of Arundel, Dana Hatch of Wells and Stanley Hatch of Flowery Branch, Ga.; one daughter, Pamela Melcher of Wells; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Albert R. Locke of New Hampshire and Texas and James A. Locke Sr. of Norridgewock, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, June Tetrault of Rhode Island, who died in 2001.

Private burial was in Lee Hill Cemetery, Lee, N.H.

Carole Pendergast

ARUNDEL - Carole Ann (Kenyon) Pendergast of Arundel, Maine and formerly of Newton, Mass., died April 13, 2002 in the Santa Maria Nursing Facility, Cambridge, Mass., following a long illness.

She was born in Fall River, Mass., and attended area schools.

A homemaker, she was a breast cancer survivor.

Taking special pride in raising her eight children, she also treasured her 18 grandchildren. She enjoyed the ocean, moving to Maine in 1990. She liked to crochet, read, do crossword puzzles, swim and visit with family and friends.

Family members include four daughters, Carol M. Kimball of Weymouth, Joan P. Sangl of Harwichport, Lee Claro of Boston and Ann P. Sadowsky of New Jersey; four sons, Ned of Weston, John E. of California, Michael K. of Louisiana and Mark J. of Lincoln; 18 grandchildren; seven brothers and three sisters.

There will be a memorial Mass today at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Presentation Church, 676 Washington St., Brighton, Mass.

Interment will be in Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Tiverton, R.I. Visiting hours private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Carole Ann Kenyon Pendergast Memorial Scholarship Fund, 32 Bemis St., Weston, MA 02493.

Arrangements are by the McNamara Funeral Home, 460 Washington St., Brighton, Mass.

Heather Pendergast Sherwood

KENNEBUNKPORT - Heather Pendergast Sherwood of Freeport, died at Cedars Nursing Home in Portland.

She was born Sept. 16, 1944 in Beaver, Pa.

She leaves her husband of 25 years, Wayne David Sherwood; her mother, Margueritte Craig (Pendergast) Stevens of Skaneateles, N.Y.; one brother, Criag Abbott Pendergast of Kennebunkport; one sister, Anne Pendergast Wester of Big Horn, Wyo.; three nieces and a nephew.

Services will be private.

Philip Sawyer, 82

ARUNDEL - Philip John Sawyer, 82, a resident of River Road, Arundel, died Dec. 22, 2001, at his home after a long illness.

He was born in Concord, N.H., on May 24, 1918, a son of Charles and Vera (Coleman) Sawyer. He graduated from Concord High School and then from the University of New Hampshire in 1940 with a B.S. in Forestry. After Pearl Harbor he tried to enlist, but was turned down for poor eyesight. He always regretted that so many of his UNH classmates were killed in the war while he was safe in the United States. He did defense work for General Electric for a wood technology firm before entering graduate school.

He received his Ph.D. in the Zoology Department from the University of Michigan in 1952, and returned to teach in the Zoology Department at UNH. In addition to his primary interest in fisheries and aquatic sciences, he taught courses in mammalogy, ornithology, and general biology. His memories of his years of teaching and research were working on the problem of toxic algae in N.H. lakes with colleagues and students. His research included marine interests, and he was a pioneer in the aquaculture of winter flounder. He was a professor and chairman of the Zoology Department before retiring in 1982. He was the author of number publications on fisheries, toxic algae and aquaculture, and of several patents.

In 1981, he was on of the founders of Sea Run Holdings Inc., an aquaculture-biotechnology company. After retirement he worked full time on many company projects including a salmon ranching venture at the power plant on Cousins Island, Yarmouth. He was proud of his role in the resulting salmon run that returned to the plant and the Royal River in the 1980s. He worked on other salmon aquaculture projects in Eastport and the company's hatchery at Pierce Pond until he became ill in the past year.

He was a gentle, thoughtful, man; natural teacher who knew and loved the outdoors. He could identify a bird from one note of its call or a plant from a single leaf. His enduring interest was in wild creatures and in preserving their habitat.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Evelyn (Snodgrass) Sawyer of Arundel; one grandson, Elijah V. O'dell of Denver,Colo.; and three stepchildren, Dale A. Stair of Durham, Maine and Lee F. Adams and Ellis C. Adams both of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter, Ellen by a previous marriage, died in 1983.

A funeral service was held Thursday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, followed by a reception at his home at 339 River Road, Arundel.

Graveside services were held Friday at the Durham, Cemetery, Old Route Four in Durham, N.H. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Maine Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, 14 Maine St., Brunswick, Maine 04011 in Mr. Sawyer's memory.

Marie Stuebgen, 92

KENNEBUNK -Marie Jeanne Stuebgen, 92, a resident of Hillcrest Green Meadows, in Kennebunk, died Dec. 22, 2001, at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after a brief illness. Widow of James Stuebgen.

There will be no services.

Edward Szykniej, 80

WELLS - Edward A. Szykniej, 80, resident of Eldredge Road in Wells, died Dec. 28, 2001, at his residence after a long illness.

He was born Nov. 11, 1921, in Chelsea, Mass., the son of Stephen and Melania (Pietrasko) Szykniej. He graduated from Boston Trade School with the class of 1939.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Seabees division.

He was employed as a machinist for 45 years at General Electric in Everett, Mass., retiring in 1983. Following his retirement he moved with his wife to Wells, Maine from Medford, Mass.

He was an active communicant of St. Mary's Parish of Wells where he served as an usher and was also a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council at St. Mary's.

He enjoyed bowling and bowling but mostly enjoyed spending his free time with his beloved cat Isaac.

He was predeceased by a sister Blanche Koroski.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Minnie F. (Pantano) Szykniej of Wells; one son, Anthony Szykniej of Medford, Mass.; one daughter, Marie Szykniej of Wells; and one grandson, Jess Szykniej of Medford, Mass.

A Knights of Columbus service was held Sunday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, in Wells. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, in St. Mary's Church, Wells. Interment with military honors followed in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Eye Division of the Joslin Diabetes Association, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215 in Mr. Szykniej's memory.

Raymond Mosher Sr., 56

KENNEBUNKPORT - Raymond E. Mosher Sr., 56, of Old Cape Road, died Dec. 28, 2001, at his residence after a long illness.

He was born Oct. 20, 1945 in Biddeford, a son of William G. and Sarah E (Palmer) Mosher, and is a graduate of Kennebunk High School.

A Vietnam veteran, he served three years in the U.S. Army.

He married Dorothy Mary (Brown) Mosher April 3, 1965.

He was employed with Maramont in Saco, a police officer for the town of Kennebunk, then went to work with North East Dredging Company for 12 years, he then opened Tilly's Shanty Restaurant at Cape Porpoise Pier, moved it to Route 1 in Arundel and finally closed it after 14 years. Most recently, he has operated Ray Mosher Trucking Company for the last three years. Throughout his life, he has done carpentry work on the side, and helped his son, Ray Jr., build his boat and then lobster together.

He is a member of the American Legion Post 159 in Kennebunkport, and an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed tuna and striper fishing and hunting.

Community minded, he always supported charities in town through his restaurant, and enjoyed giving in many ways to others who needed help. For advice, his family and friends could always look to him for direction, and his most common advice was "to face difficulties head on" and that most problems were a "piece of cake."

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Brown Mosher of Kennebunkport; one son, Raymond E. Mosher Jr. of Kennebunk; two daughters, Tracey Lee Sferrazzo of Kennebunk and Shelley Jo Shrader of Kennebunk; one brother, William G. Mosher Jr. of Kennebunk; five sisters, Grace Williamson of Biddeford, Thelma Thurlow of Poland Springs, Delores Reading of Kennebunk, Pauline Irons of Ocala, Fla., and Beverly Swain of New Hampshire; and five grandchildren, Kayleigh, Vincent, Olivia, Justin, and Isabelle Rae.

A funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

Should Friends desire, memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011, in Mr. Mosher's memory.

Ralph Cressey, 59

NORTH BERWICK - Ralph C. Cressey, 89, of North Berwick, died Dec. 29 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford.

He was born May 24, 1912 in Gorham, son of Alvin and Irene (Douglas) Cressey. He graduated from Gorham High School, then married Barbara Hurd and moved to North Berwick.

He had been the town constable and truant officer from 1936-1944; deputy sheriff from 1938-1952; tax collector from 1940-1944; served in the state of Maine legislature from 1963-1974; was jury commissioner for York County from 1974-1979 and a member of various civic organizations. He owned a retail store in North Berwick for 40 years and he had been a motel clerk for seven summer seasons after his retirement.

He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara (Hurd) Cressey, a daughter, Sandra Cressey and a son, Richard Cressey.

He is survived by two grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick with Rev. Robert G. Cole of the Bethel Christian Church officiating. Interment following in Mount Pleasant cemetery in North Berwick.

Eloise Drown, 93

LYMAN - Eloise May Drown, 93, of the Walker Road, gently left this earth at the Newton Center in Sanford Dec. 28, 2001.

She was born Oct. 29, 1908 in Eliot, a daughter of Edson and Bessie Ann (Shapleigh) Shapleigh, and is a graduate of Eliot High School and attended Lynn Massachusetts School of Nursing.

She did private duty nursing until her marriage to Harold W. Drown, who predeceased her in 2000 after 65 years of marriage. She is also predeceased by three brothers and a sister.

In 1913, she joined the Shapleigh Family Association and was the oldest member at the time of her death. She enjoyed attending Order of the Eastern Star meetings and was a life member and past Matron of Fern Chapter 139 O.E.S.

Survivors include one son, Ralph H. Drown of Lyman; one daughter Mayah M.E. Smith (Mary Ellen) of Alfred; four grandsons, David Lord of Alfred, Michael Lord of Lyman, Steven Lord of Dayton and Scott Drown of Lyman; one granddaughter, Holly Gray of Biddeford; five great-grandsons; five great-granddaughters; nieces; nephews; cousins; and her beloved animals.

An Eastern Star Service was held Wednesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, with the members of Fern Chapter 139 O.E.S. officiating.

Interment was in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Greydon Freeman

BIDDEFORD - Greydon Carlos Freeman died at the Renaissance Nursing Home in Biddeford on Dec. 10, 2001.

He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Ethel (Lovgren) Freeman and is survived by one son, Greydon C. Freeman of Woodbridge, Conn.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born in Enfield, N.H. on Aug. 10, 1910, the son of Susie and Harold Freeman.

He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1928, attended Wentworth Institute in Boston from 1928 to 1931 and was an honorary member of the Dartmouth class of 1932.

He served as a volunteer fireman and member of the Finance Committee of the town of Hanover. He was a member of the Rotary clubs of Hanover and White River Junction and was in charge of volunteers at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in the 1940s. More recently he served on the boards of the Upper Valley Hostel and the Howe Library.

He was owner of Greydon Freeman Inc. Stationers in White River and Hanover, for 38 years.

He and his wife were residents of Hanover, N.H. from their marriage in 1939 until they moved to Kennebunk, in 1999.

A memorial service was held Dec. 23 at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, N.H.
