Thomas Gallagher, 73

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Thomas A. Gallagher, 73, resident of 44 West Webster St., Manchester, former longtime resident of Wells, Maine, died Dec. 25, 2001, at his residence after a long illness.

He was born Jan. 15, 1928, in Cambridge, Mass., the son of Gregory and Gertrude (Nevins) Gallagher. He graduated from Cambridge Latin School.

He was employed for many years as a linesman for New England Telephone. Following retirement he worked in Wells as a parking lot attendant on Drakes Island and was a member of the Wells Volunteer Fire Department.

He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Wells.

He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Anne (Campbell) Gallagher of Manchester, N.H.; one son, Michael Gallagher of Middleboro, Mass.; two stepsons, Bernard and John McManus, both of Manchester, N.H.; two daughters, Mary Beth Kowalczyk of North Andover, Mass., Sue Steiner of Weggis, Switzerland; six stepdaughters, Nancy Fields of Columbus, Mo., Laura Murphy, Mary Lesniak and Elizabeth Rich, all of Manchester, N.H., Diane Chase of Wells, and Ellen Weist of Plymouth, Ind.; 18 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, in St. Mary's Church, Wells. Interment followed in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 346, Augusta, ME 04330 in Mr. Gallagher's memory.

James Hummel Jr., 80

WELLS - James F. Hummel Jr. 80, of Michael Road, former longtime resident of South Portland, died suddenly Dec. 24, 2001, at York Hospital.

He was born July 25, 1921 in Laketon, Pa., the son of James and Lena (Kubler) Hummel and attended Dallas, Pa. schools.

He is a World War II veteran, serving in the Army Air Corps in Europe. After his discharge, he served as a first Lieutenant in the Connecticut Air National Guard.

He was employed for more than 40 years as a credit union examiner with the U.S. Government, retiring in 1978, and then worked as a consultant and auditor for the Maine Credit Union League.

He is a member of the Maine Credit Union Trust.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Margaret Lincoln Hummel of Wells; stepmother, Inez Hummel of Dallas, Pa.; one son, Franklin L. Hummel of Boston, Mass.; one daughter, Susan H. Phillips of Decatur, Ga.

A memorial service will be held at in the spring and announced by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.

Lloyd G. Jewett, 71

KENNEBUNK - Lloyd G. Jewett, 71, resident of Ross Road, died Dec. 28, 2001, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born in South Portland, on June 2, 1930, a son of Herbert and Marian P. (Ellis) Jewett, and attended South Portland schools.

He was a Korean War Veteran serving in U.S. Air Force.

He was employed by the Central Maine Power Company, beginning as a lineman for several years and worked up to become plant operator for more than 25 years, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of the York Lodge 22 and Royal Arch Chapter and Commandry in West Kennebunk, the Scottish Rite, Valley of Portland, Kora Temple Shrine in Lewiston, the Kora Renegades, Put Stevens Court No. 107 Jesters in Portland and the York Country Shrine Club where he was a director for several years.

He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

He was predeceased by his wife Margaret Foley Jewett, a son, Mark Jewett and his brother Howard Jewett.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas E. Jewett of Suffork, Va., Peter J. Jewett of West Kennebunk, and William K. Jewett of Arundel; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Mary) Emmons of Kennebunk and Mrs. William (Katie) Randall of Saco; and 11 grandchildren.

A funeral was held Monday at the chapel with the Rev. Stephen Hastings officiating. Burial was in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Van Ness Lush, 72

KENNEBUNKPORT - Van Ness "Bunty" (Maling) Lush, 72, of Beachwood Avenue, died Dec. 24, 2001, at her residence after a long illness.

She was born Sept. 23, 1929 in Biddeford, the daughter of L. Clifford and Louise (Emmons) Maling, and was a graduate of Kennebunkport High School, class of 1947, and Westbrook Junior College.

She was a kindergarten teacher with the Eliot School system for a brief time, and owned and operated Housekeeping Cottages in Kennebunkport for 35 years.

She was active in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and worked for the town census, ballot clerk and voter registration in Kennebunkport, and was active in politics.

Her interests included reading, books, fishing, jigsaw puzzles, collecting collectibles, and traveling.

She and her husband spent winters in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Ernest Lush of Kennebunkport; one son, John Lush and daughter-in-law Faith of Kennebunk; one daughter, Vicki Lush of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; one brother, Laurin Maling of Sanford; and two grandsons, Cameron and Dillon, both of Kennebunk.

A celebration of her life was held Saturday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Shirley McKittrick, 75

NASHUA, N.H. - Shirley M. (Knutson) McKittrick of Nashua, N.H., formerly of Hollis, N.H., Chelmsford and Lowell, Mass., died Dec. 28, 2001 at the Lowell General Hospital, after an extended battle with cancer.

She was the wife of Robert A. McKittrick, with who she celebrated 52 years of marriage on Aug. 6 of this year.

Born in Lowell on May 3, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Berry) Knutson. She received her early education at Westford Academy, and graduated from Lowell High School in 1945.

Following high school graduation, she worked at Fort Devens as a messenger until the end of the war. She then worked in the clothing business for a number of years, at Miss Howe's Women's Clothing Store, formerly in Lowell, and St. Gagnon's Department Store as a buyer.

The family lived in Lowell until 1951, having moved to Chelmsford where they lived until 1977. At that time, they established their home in Hollis, N.H., and in 1998, in Nashua, N.H.

In her younger years, she had belonged to the Paint and Powder Club, and while living in Chelmsford, was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church.

Along with her husband, she belonged to many golf clubs, among them Sky Meadow in Nashua, N.H, Vesper Country Club in Tyngsborough, Mass., and Webhannet Golf Club in Kennebunkport, Maine, and the Laxahatchee, Cypress Links, and Jonathan's Landing Golf Clubs in Florida. They also enjoyed a yachting and boating interest, with memberships in the Arundel Yacht Club at Kennebunkport, Maine Cypress Island Yacht Club in Juno Beach, Florida.

Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Judith A. and Costas Balomenos or Arundel; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert S. and Donna McKittrick of Westford, Mass., Douglas A. and Merrilee McKittrick of West Milford, N.J. and Philip R. McKittrick of Nashua, N.H.; three grandchildren, Robert M. McKittrick of Brookline, Mass., Lauren E. McKittrick of Denver, Colo. and Zachary R. Balomenos of Arundel; two step-grandchildren, Justin McCarthy and Maura McCarthy, both of Westford, Mass.

A memorial service was held Wednesday at All Saints Episcopal Church, Chelmsford. Funeral director Walter F. Bayliss Jr., Morse-Bayliss Funeral Home.

Friends who wish, may make memorial contributions in her name to Lowell General Hospital Cancer Center, 295 Varnum Avenue, Lowell, MA 01854.

Florence Michaels, 75

KENNEBUNK - Florence M. Michaels, 76, resident of Fletcher Street, Kennebunk died Dec. 27, 2001 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford following a brief illness.

She was born Dec. 7, 1925, in Baker Brook, New Brunswick, the fourth of nine children to Moise and Laura (Dubois) Raymond and attended schools in Madawaska, Maine.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed traveling, reading and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a communicant of St. Martha Church of Kennebunk.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Richard Michaels of Kennebunk; four sons, Steven and Paul Michaels both of Kennebunk, John Michaels of Cape Elizabeth, and Raymond Michaels of Veasie, Maine; one brother, Lawrence Raymond of Madawaska; one sister, Betty Hunter of Baldwin, Mass; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday at St. Martha Church, Kennebunk. Interment followed in Hope Cemetery, Route 1, Kennebunk. Arrangements are by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Forster Moore Jr., 75

KENNEBUNK - Forster H. Moore Jr., 75, a resident of Sea Road, Kennebunk, died Dec. 23, 2001, at his home.

He was born in Canastota, N.Y. on Dec. 23, 1926, a son of Forster H. and Dollof (Marier) Moore and graduated from Kennebunk High School.

He was a World War II veteran, served in the U.S. Army.

He worked at the former K and E of Kennebunk for 25 years and also was a custodian at the Kennebunk Savings Bank for several years.

He was a member of the York Lodge of Masons of West Kennebunk and the Kora Temple of Lewiston.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, well-traveled, music and being with friends and families.

He was predeceased by his wife Florence L Cheney Moore and a son Mark Moore.

He is survived by his two sons, Scott Moore of Saco, and Jack Moore of Phoenix, Ariz; one daughter, Deborah Giles of Kennebunk; many brothers and sisters; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Friday at the Chapel. Interment will be in Hope cemetery in the spring. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel-Kennebunk.

William Ballou, 87

NORTH BERWICK - William A. Ballou, 87, of Turkey Street, passed away on Jan. 23, 2002 at the Kennebunk Nursing Center after a brief illness.

He was born in Ware, Mass., Nov. 6, 1914, a son of Alvertus and Cora Belle (Towne) Ballou. When his father died in 1930, he left high school to run the family farm. He moved to Strafford, N.H. and married Melba Parshley in 1946. They moved to North Berwick in 1949 where shortly after they established and operated a poultry farm for more than 40 years. For 20 of those years, he also worked six days a week at Chadbourne Poultry Farm in Sanford. He also enjoyed gardening and working in the woods, harvesting his own firewood.

He was a member of the Maine Poultry Federation and the Maine Farm Bureau. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church in North Berwick and served on the board of trustees for several years.

He was predeceased by his wife in 1993, two sisters, two step-sisters and a brother and granddaughter, Lorin Cooper in 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Edmund of North Berwick and wife Faith, Nelson and wife Donna of Arundel; two daughters, Joan Beal of Gresham, Oregon and Alice and husband Bob Cooper of Bar Harbor; four grandchildren, Melissa, Leslee, Christian, Edmund Jr.; and one great-grandson, Joseph.

A funeral was held Saturday at the First Baptist Church, North Berwick. Interment will be in the Crown Point cemetery in Strafford, N.H., in the spring.

Eleanor Boulet, 88

KENNEBUNK - Eleanor Leone (Littlefield) Boulet, a resident of Penny Lane, Kennebunk, died Jan. 23, 2002, at her home after a brief illness.

She was born in Sanford, on June 14, 1913, a daughter of Chester and Ina (Johnson) Littlefield. She graduated from Sanford High School class of 1932.

She was employed by the Goodall Mills in 1930s.

She and her late husband ran the Ocean Breeze Motor Court in Wells from 1949 to 1972.

She enjoyed knitting, crochet, and her family.

She was predeceased by her husband Emile J. Boulet, a great-granddaughter Kayla M. Kimball and her five brothers and sisters.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. (Raymond) Lorraine Kimball of Arundel; one sister, Esther Pitts of Rochester, N.Y.; two grandsons, Bryan and his wife Laurie Kimball, and Wayne and his wife Jennifer Kimball; and two great-grandchildren, Chad and Sarah Kimball.

Memorial graveside services will be held at the Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk in the spring. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Helen Dempster, 87

KENNEBUNKPORT - Helen R. (Eldredge) Dempster, 87, a former resident of Chelmsford, Mass., and a longtime resident of Kennebunkport, has died.

For more than 67 years she had been the wife of William Dempster, who had predeceased her in 1999.

She was born Oct. 1914 in Winthrop, Mass., and was the daughter of Sanford and Harriet Eldredge and attended Winthrop schools. Her father was a noted firefighter in Winthrop and she was a direct descendant of the well-known Eldredge family of Cape Cod. Her grandfather was Capt. Walter S. Eldredge and her grandmother was Emma (Crosby) Eldredge.

She was a homemaker, but she was also active in the Episcopal church having served as director of Christian education in two parishes in Massachusetts. She was also a longtime volunteer at Lowell (Mass.) General Hospital.

Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Madore and her husband Michael of Kennebunkport; three sons and their wives, William A. Jr. and Audrey Dempster of Hudson, N.H., Robert and Claudia Dempster of Camirillo, Calif. and Peter and Emily Dempster of Santa Barbara, Calif.; one brother, Walter Eldredge of Burlington, Mass.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. Interment will be in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.

The family requests no flowers please, but suggests that contributions be made to the Alzheimer Foundation, 186 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101-2406.
