Lloyd Dodge, 86

YORK HARBOR - Lloyd Pillsbury Dodge, 86, of Aldis Lane, died Jan. 26, 2002 at Sentry Hill after a period of failing health.

Born in Bellmore, N.Y. on March 22, 1915, the son of William C. and Lavinia (Hunt) Dodge, he was a graduate of Amherst College, Syracuse University and the Yale Law School in 1939.

He was a former resident of Chambersburg, Pa.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II.

A memorial service will be held in the spring.

Martha Foley, 84

ROCKLAND - Martha Elizabeth Foley, 84, died Jan. 21, 2002, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport after a short illness.

She was born in Winthrop, Mass., a daughter of the late Daniel and Elizabeth Foley. She graduated in 1935 from Winthrop (Mass.) High School and in 1939 from St. Francis Xavier College in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. She went on to obtain a master's degree in the French language at the Sorbonne in Paris, France.

Never married, she had a lengthy and fascinating career that took her all over the world. She began as a dietician in the Army Air Corps providing logistics for and helping to open the first U.S. hospital in Normandy, France immediately following the D-Day invasion.

Later she worked for the U.S. Information Agency in Seoul, Korea which included time working with Edward R. Murrow and news coverage of the Pueblo incident. In fact, she was pictured beside Mr. Murrow in Newsweek magazine's coverage of the event. Next she served in the U.S. State Department (Foreign Service) in Europe and the Far East as U.S. ambassador's secretary. She also served behind the Iron Curtain for the ambassador of Poland.

The country she most reminisced about of all she served in was Calcutta, India. She was amazed by the vibrancy of life there despite the crushing poverty that was everywhere. While in India, she met and contributed resources to Mother Teresa's work.

She retired to Kennebunk, Maine, where she volunteered for several area groups, including the Woman's Association and pursued her hobbies of gardening, knitting and fine crewel work. Her last home was at the Talbot Home in Rockland, Maine where she was most comfortable and graciously cared for and enjoyed daily games of Skip Bo with the other residents.

She was predeceased by her four brothers David, Robert, Roger and Padraic.

She is survived by one sister, Maura Tranfaglia of Camden; Donal Foley of Waterbury, Conn., Mel Foley of Rockport, Conal Foley of Winthrop, Mass. and Evan Foley of Quincy, Mass; and many nieces and nephews.

Private memorial service and Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, Mass. will be held in the spring. Services are by Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home in Rockland.

Willis Myers, 85

PARAMUS, N.J. - Willis F. (Jim) Myers, 85, of Paramus, died Jan. 17, 2002 at The Cupola in Paramus.

He was born in North Bergen, N.J. Formerly of Cliffside Park, N.J., he resided in Paramus for two years.

He was employed as business executive with Music Lic. Co., Secac, N.Y., N.Y. for 40 years. He retired in 1985.

He was a member of the South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport.

Surviving are one nephew, Alan Sachtleben of Houston, Texas and one grand-nephew, Douglas Sachtleben of Ridgewood, N.J.

Services and Interment will be private.

Arrangements are by McCorry Brothers Funeral Home, Cliffside Park, N.J.

Elizabeth Pine, 47

KENNEBUNK - Elizabeth J. "Bunny" Pine, 47, died Jan. 22, 2002, at her residence after a brief illness.

She was born April 18, 1954 in Los Angeles, California, a daughter of Howard and Judith (Beaumont) Pine and was a 1972 graduate of Palm Springs High School.

For many years she was employed with several movie studios as a costume designer, and worked frequently as a freelance designer.

She was a loving mother and true friend. Her generosity, compassion and carefree spirit will never be forgotten.

Survivors include one son, Aron Lyons; two sisters, Angel Pine of Hollywood, Calif. and Wendy Crawford of Boston, Mass.

A service will be held in California at a later date. Burial will be in Desert Memorial Cemetery, Cathedral City, Calif. Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk, ME.

David Racine, 59

WELLS - David Racine, 59, of Meetinghouse Road, died Jan. 22, 2002, at Maine Medical Center, Portland, after a long illness.

He was born April 7, 1942 in Brunswick, the son of Raymond and Louise (Gaudet) Racine, attended Brunswick schools, and in his senior year graduated from Wells High School, class of 1960.

He was employed by the I.G.A supermarkets for 18 years, then with Shaw's supermarkets for 17 years before retiring in 1994 due to his health.

He was a former member of the Wells Branch Fire Association, enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting and fishing, and collecting antique fishing tackle.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Arlene L. (Welch) Racine of Wells; one son, Stephen Racine of Wells; one daughter, Rebecca Racine of Portland; three sisters, Valerie Bourque of Biddeford, Suzanne Racine of Rochester, N.H., and Nancy Hunt of Pa.

A memorial service was held Saturday, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells with Rev. Gordon Fleming officiating.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Children's Fund of Indian Island, Chief Barry Dana, 6 River Road, Indian Island, ME 04468.

Dorothy Chase, 88

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - Dorothy Dow Chase, 88, died on May 17, 2002, in Portsmouth, N.H., of heart failure due to pneumonia.

She was born in Worcester, Mass. and resided for most of her life in York, Maine (15 years), Stuart, Fla. (20 years) and Durham, N.H. (30 years). She had also resided in East Orange, N.J., Englewood, Calif., The Canal Zone in Panama and Laconia, N.H.

She was designer and president of her manufacturing business called Dotti of Durham, Ltd. After she sold her business she was designer and Accessory Department Organizer for John Meyer of Norwich who manufactured sportswear with Villager. She used her art training in many ways throughout her life such as window display, story display, landscaping, decorating and designing in her business. Active in art throughout her life she belonged to art associations in Durham, N.H., New Hampshire League of Arts and Crafts, York Art Assn., York, and Barn Gallery, Ogunquit, Little Louvre and Martin County Art Assn., both in Stuart, Fla.

She received her art education at Newark School of Fine Arts, Newark, N.J. and at the University of New Hampshire, as well as having been to many art workshops throughout the years.

Another major interest throughout her life was the study of mental telepathy and life after death. She had an extensive library on the latter subject. Mr. and Mrs. Chase ran the museum, Pownalborough Courthouse of Dresden Maine for several summers.

Her husband, Frederick Houston Chase died April 17, 1996.

Survivors include one daughter, Danna Wells Chase of Cape Neddick; one sister, Jane Kalmbaugh of Grand Haven, Mich.; and two brothers, J. Richard Dow of Goffstown, N.H. and David B. Tierney Jr. of Wilton, N.H.

John Binette, 73

BIDDEFORD - John L. Binette, 73, of Lessard Avenue, died July 7, 2002 at Southridge Living Center.

He was born in Biddeford on Aug. 14, 1928, a son of Joseph and Euphemie (Lessard) Binette, and was educated in schools there, graduating from St. Louis High School in 1947.

He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

On Nov. 6, 1954, he married Lorraine M. Roberge in Most Holy Trinity Church, Saco. She died Dec. 5, 1996.

He owned and operated the Texaco Service Station at Scammon's Corner for 15 years. He also owned and operated Biddeford Car Wash at the railroad overpass for 18 years, retiring in 1988.

He enjoyed thoroughbred horse racing.

Survivors include four daughters, Debbie (Mrs. Tobie) Boucher, Denise (Mrs. Richard) Langevin, Cathy (Mrs. Benedict) Rush and Michelle, all of Biddeford; two sons, David W. and John L. Jr., both of Biddeford; one brother, Richard of Biddeford; six sisters, Anita Morin, Muriel Poisson, Madeleine Chretien, Beatrice Foran and Joanne Nolette, all of Biddeford and Priscilla Poisson of Saco; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Yvonne Boucher, 90

BIDDEFORD - Yvonne M. Boucher, 90, of Gray's Lane, died July 4, 2002 at her home.

She was born in Livermore Falls, on Feb. 4, 1912, the daughter of Frank and Antoinette (Goupil) Pelchat, and was educated in local schools.

In 1942, she married Hilaire L. Boucher at Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Saco. He died Oct. 26, 1994.

She worked several years as a seamstress with a local clothing store, several years at Pepperell Manufacturing Co., and was a homemaker after becoming a mother.

She enjoyed sewing.

Surviving are a daughter, Alice M. of Biddeford; two sisters, Diana Fournier and Lourilda Harvey, both of Sanford; a granddaughter, Jamie Boucher-Gonzalez of Dallas, Texas; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen Gillman, 79

AMESBURY, Mass. - Helen Gillman, 79, died July 7, 2002 at the Harborside Healthcare Center in Amesbury, Mass.

She was born Sept. 30, 1922 in Newburyport, Mass., a daughter of Fiodar and Anna Orechwo.

She was a resident of Salisbury, Mass. for all of her childhood and most of her adult life. She graduated from Amesbury High School in 1940. She attended Concord School of Nursing in Concord, Mass.

But in 1941 she decided to pursue a career in aviation. She first became interested in flying through some Air Force pilot she met while in nursing. She took flying lessons at Plum Island Airport in Newburyport. She earned her solo, private and commercial license at the airport. She learned to fly on a one-lane dirt runway in a single-prop plane with only a compass and her own eyesight to guide her. During World War II she flew cargo flights for the military around New England.

She also volunteered for the Civilian Coast Patrol, her main job being to watch for German submarines off the East coast. She remembered the flights as, "no radio, no noise, no communications of any kind, silence was the most important thing." Unfortunately, after the war, an equipment failure caused a crash-landing. The injuries from the crash ended her commercial aviation career.

She married George F. Gillman Jr. of the South Shore (Mass.) and raised a family. She was known for her hard work, and her excellence in the art of crocheting, despite her limited eyesight. She was also a spunky, intelligent and vigorous woman who had no difficulty speaking her mind. She will be sorely missed by her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, George F. Gillman III, and wife, Faith of Kennebunk; three daughters, Janet Seaman and husband, Raymond of St. Albans, Vt., Linda Metcalf and husband, James of Hampton, N.H. and Jacqueline Gaffney of Arizona; two sisters, Pauline Franzone and Jenny Hebert, both of Salisbury, Mass.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one niece and two nephews.

There will be no visiting hours. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Berman-Gund Laboratory, 245 Charles St., Boston, MA 02114; or to Beacon Hospice, 100 Cummings Center, Ste 129G, Beverly, MA 01915.

Arthur Cantin, 72

SANFORD - Arthur Cantin, 72, died at home July 6, 2002.

He was born in Sanford on Oct. 15, 1929, a son of Abdias and Laura (Sevigny) Cantin, and attended the former Holy Family School.

He was raised and lived in the same home all of his life.

He was disabled from birth, but worked several years at the former Roux Poultry Farm in Alfred.

Family members say he was a gentle and happy man who liked people. He loved to color and look at pictures of old cars and buggies.

He was a communicant of Holy Family Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Leo University. and Joseph R., both of Sanford; five sisters, Sr. Marc (Lucille), OSU and Sr. Clement (Marie Ange), OSU, both of Waterville, Rita Roux of Springvale and Annette Laferte and Bertha, both of Sanford; one niece who assisted with his care, Stella Plante of Sanford; and many other nieces and nephews.

Sylvia MacLaren, 73

OGUNQUIT - Sylvia G, MacLaren, 73, a resident of Ogunquit, died July 5, 2002 at the York Hospital in York.

She was born in Boston, Mass., on Feb. 27, 1929, the daughter of Henry Lawrence and Cora (Greenall) MacLaren and grew up in Dedham and Hyde Park, graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1946. Following a career in banking of 38 years, she retired from the Shawmut Bank of Boston as an assistant vice president in 1984.

She then moved to Ogunquit, which had been her summer home since 1960s. She loved Maine - its beaches and ocean and also enjoyed gardening and playing golf.

She is survived by her beloved friend Barbara J. Cushing of Ogunquit; one sister, Doris MacLaren Collins of Kennebunk; one brother, Henry F. MacLaren and his wife Frances of Boise, Idaho; two sisters-in-law, Janet Hargraves MacLaren of Medway, Mass., and E. Jane Henderson MacLaren of Dedham, Mass.; four nieces; two nephews; and seven great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Russell MacLaren in 1976 and David MacLaren in 2002.

Memorial Services were held on Tuesday at the Christ Church, Dane Street, Kennebunk, with the Rev. Stephen Hastings officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, NE Division, York Unit, PO Box 476, Brunswick, ME 04011-0476 and or to the Christ Church, PO Box 87, Kennebunk, ME 04043 in Sylvia MacLaren's memory.
