Minnie Goretsky, 94

SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. - Minnie (Fleischman) Goretsky, 94, of Swampscott, Mass., died unexpectedly July 6, 2002 in Salem Hospital in Salem, Mass. She was the wife of the late Harry Goretsky.

Born in Bronx, N.Y., she had resided in Wells for 25 years before moving to Swampscott 18 months ago. She had previously lived in Newark, N.J.

She was a graduate in 1925 from the Curtis High School in Staten Island, N.Y.

She was a member of the Ogunquit Women's Club, the Portsmouth, N.H. Hadassah, the Newark, N.J. B'nai B'rith, and a volunteer for the Ogunquit Senior Citizens Meal Site.

She leaves one brother and sister-in-law, Abraham and Hazel Fleischman of N.Y.C.; one late sister and brother-in-law, Adeline and Harry Richer of Ogunquit; her nieces and nephews, Rosalinda and Marvin Jacobsen of Peabody, Mass., Harriet Goldstein of Albany, N.Y., Cathy Goretsky of

Titusville, Fla.; and she was the great-aunt of Etana, Neil, and Lisa Jacobson; and many other great-nieces and nephews.

Graveside services sere held Monday in the Baron Hirsch Cemetery, Staten Island, N.Y.

Shiva Tuesday was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Jacobson.

Donations in her memory may be donated to the Jewish Rehabilitation Center for Aged, 330 Paradise Rd., Swampscott, MA 01907.

Christopher Mosher, 41

WELLS - Christopher K. "Chris" Mosher, 41, a resident of Post Road Wells, died unexpectedly July 3, 2002 at his home.

He was born in Franklin, N.H. on May 27, 1961 a son of Clyde F and Corrine (Bigley) Mosher.

He attended schools in North and South Berwick schools and graduated from Noble High School of Berwick.

He was a self-employed finish carpenter for the past 20 years as well as an accomplished artist and master of design work of various projects.

His spare time was devoted to his family, outdoors actives and his many friends.

He is survived by his wife of two years, Susan (Hallczuk) Mosher of Wells; four children, Isaiah, Morgan and Sidney Mosher of North Berwick, Zachary Mosher of East Brook, Maine; his father, Clyde Mosher and his wife Elizabeth of Vassalboro; his mother, Corrine M. O'Begley of Natchez, Miss.; one sister, Melanie A. Mosher of Anna Marie, Fla.; one brother, Michael M. Mosher of Woodland Hills, Calif.; four step-brothers, Stuart Stevens of South Berwick, John Stevens of Somersworth, N.H., Michael and Randy Stevens of Rochester, N.H.; and one step-sister Donna Hadsell of Vassalboro; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

A Funeral Mass was held Monday at St. Mary's Church, Wells. Burial was in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

Raymond Nolette, 79

BIDDEFORD - Raymond Nolette, 79, of High Street, died July 5, 2002, at the Veteran's Hospital in Togus.

He was born Feb. 18, 1923, a son of Albert and Alice (Lemire) Nolette, attended St. Andre's School and graduated from St. Louis High School in 1942.

He served in the Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received during the Normandy Invasion.

On Oct. 9, 1971, he married Lucy Boucher at St. Andre's Church.

He held a number of jobs during his lifetime. He worked at Butler's Department Store in Biddeford and as a cutter in the Vellux Department at Pepperell Manufacturing, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the Fremont Club, Disabled American Veterans, Knights of Columbus, St. Louis Alumni Association and the American Legion. He umpired Little League baseball for 35 years.

Two brothers died previously, Ralph last December and Leo in January.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years; one stepdaughter, Suzanne D. Jude of Biddeford; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pauline Pate, 84

BIDDEFORD - Pauline M. Pate, 84, of Elm Street, died July 7, 2002 at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born April 30, 1918 in Biddeford, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aime Ayotte, attended schools there and later attended a hairdressing academy in Portland.

She worked for several years as a hairdresser and was a clerk and manager at the Quality Shop on Washington Street. She retired in 1972.

She enjoyed candlepin bowling at the Big 20 Lanes in Scarborough, playing on several leagues and making many friends there. She also enjoyed being with family and friends and playing cards.

She was a member of the former Foss Street Methodist Church.

Her husband, Norman Pate, and three brothers, Paul, Robert, Rudy Ayotte, died previously.

She is survived by her son, Richard of Biddeford.

Nella Stevens, 99

WELLS -Nella B. Stevens, 99, died June 29, 2002 at York Hospital.

She was born in South Portland, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Blake.

She moved to Wells to the same home she recently resided in along Nella Street (so named after Nella at the conclusion of World War II). She was the oldest surviving widow of a World War I veteran in Wells.

As a younger woman, she worked for the Masons Scottish Rite of Boston. Later she was secretary of the Wells Congregational Church. She has been involved in community activities such as the Extension Society of the University of Maine, and until a few years ago she volunteered in the Wells Elementary Schools, helping first-graders. She always attended school functions and never missed a chance to vote on the school budget. She applauded the work of the school productions and enjoyed every chance she had to have a child sit on her lap and read to her. They learned from her stories about her life as a child. She was a Wells/Ogunquit school volunteer for the school year 1992, Senior L.o.v.e. reading volunteer for several years in the Wells Elementary School system. She received the Boston Post Cane Award (oldest citizen in Wells).

She was thrilled to be one of the first to ride the return of passenger rail service last year. She was especially excited since she rode the last steam engine train to run in Maine, back in the late 1950s.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clifton Stevens, in 1982. She is survived by a stepson, John Stevens; and two step-granddaughters.

A service will be held at a later date.

Joanne Williamson, 77

KENNEBUNKPORT - Joanne S. Williamson, journalist and novelist, 77, a resident of Field Point Road, Kennebunkport, died July 6, 2002 at her home.

She was born in Arlington, Va., on May 13, 1925, a daughter of Floyd E. and Gertrude (Small) Williamson. She attended Barnard College in New York City from 1942 to 1944 and attended Diller Quaile School of Music also in New York from 1944 to 1946.

She was a writer for many years including nine Young Adult Historical Novels, "The Jacobin's Daughter," 1956; "The Eagles Have Flown," 1957; "Hittite Warrior," 1960 and 1990; "The Glorious Conspiracy," 1961; "The Iron Charm," 1964; and "Forever Free," 1966, "To Dream upon a Crown," 1967 and "God King," 2002.

She received honors citation award from New York Herald Tribune 1956, for "Jacobin's Daughter."

She worked at the Powers Charm School of the air, Kaye-Martin Productions of New York City from 1946 to 1947 then she was an feature writer for Bridgeport Herald in Bridgeport, Conn. from 1948 to 1950, she also was an editor for the Retail Apparel Outlook of New York City from 1950 to 1955, her last job was as a production manager for Fairfield County Publications of Fairfield, Conn. from 1955 to 1956.

She once wrote that her first two great loves were writing and music, and her third love was history. She combined her loves within her work, writing from the perspective that to young people, historical figures come across as names to be memorized from a textbook, date lists, lifeless and incomprehensible. Her hope was to make the characters come alive as recognizable human beings, with the same desires, hopes and fears as the young people reading about them.

She moved to Kennebunkport in 1956 continuing her writing through the present and was a local piano teacher from 1956 to 1990.

She is survived by her brother, William Williamson of Kennebunkport; one niece, Joanne Duggan; two nephews, Barry and Josh Williamson; and a sister-in-law, Laurette Williamson.

A graveside service will be held Aug. 3, at 11:30 a.m. at the Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Keith McClelland Memorial Fund, PO Box 7663, Cape Porpoise, ME 04014.

Roberta Rae Willing

July 9, 1939 - March 24, 2002

YORK - A memorial service celebrating the life of Roberta Rae Willing will be held at the First Parish Church, 180 York St., York, at 2 p.m. Saturday July 20. Family and friends are welcome.

Albert Martel, 72

SANFORD - Former resident Albert Martel, 72, of Huckins Drive in Newmarket, N.H., died July 2, 2002, at the V.A. Medical Center in Manchester, N.H. after an extended illness.

He was born Feb. 16, 1930 in Sanford, the son of Ulrick and Cecirie (Bernier) Martel.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served during the Korean War.

He was a barber by trade and owned Martel's Barber Shop on Main Street in Sanford, where he worked for more than 20 years.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Rachel (Caron) Martel; three sons, Leonard of Sanford, Lawrence of Alfred and Ronald of Newmarket; three daughters, Jinette Sturman of Durham, N.H., Joanne Thompson of Pennsylvania and Lisa of Newmarket; two brothers, Armand of Rhode Island and Henry at Rochester, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Sally Thomann, 84

BIDDEFORD - Sally X. Thomann, 84, of Prospect Manor, died July 1, 2002 at Southridge Living Center.

She was born Dec. 23, 1917 in Boston, Mass., a daughter of William and Rose Nicholas, was educated in Medford, Mass. schools and graduated from Medford High School.

She moved to Houston, Texas and was employed at Faith Home for Boys from 1971 to 1981, where she was a house mother and dietitian. In 1981, she retired and came to Biddeford.

Her favorite pastimes included playing bingo and cards.

Her husband, Albert F. Thomann, died in 1966 and her son, Richard, died in May 2002.

Surviving are one son, Lawrence A. of Maine; three granddaughters; and eight great-grandchildren.

Roger Noble Sr., 69

KENNEBUNK - Roger Elliott Noble Sr., 69, a resident of, Kennebunk, died peacefully Sunday June 30, 2002 at the Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford after a short illness.

He was born in Kennebunk on Dec. 6, 1932, a son of Frank A. and Albertina (Bernier) Noble.

He attended schools in Kennebunk and Kennebunk High School. Following school, he worked at Quality Leather Co. in Kennebunk, then worked several years at Kesslen Shoe. He spent the last 33 years working for Mrs. E.B. Sewall on Brown Street, Kennebunk.

He went to into the Army in 1953 and did basic training in Pennsylvania. He was sent to Germany where he trained German shepherd Scout Dogs.

He married Donna Dixon on Dec. 6, 1956, at the Village Baptist Church in Kennebunkport.

In his younger days, he loved to go hunting with his father and brothers. But his interest turned to boating and fishing. He and brother Frank bought a boat and pleasure fished off Turbats Creek where they also scuba dived for lobsters. His latest pride and joy was the boat he purchased last year with son Renn and is docked in front of Federal Jack's Restaurant on the Kennebunk River.

He was a member and Past Commander of the Webber-Lefebvre Post No. 74 of the American Legion, member of the Amvets of Sanford and a member of the V.F.W. in both Sanford and Arundel.

During the last months he spent every day with his wife Donna and daughter Roxanne at his side, daily trips to the hospital in Portland, the doctors in Scarborough and then the daily shopping expeditions with lunch or supper out. All three just returned from a vacation trip to Las Vegas and the surrounding area.

Although he had many friends, he leaves three special ones: John Pare of Kennebunkport, his Saturday morning breakfast companion; John Lahane of Kennebunk, previously from Massachusetts, his constant boating companion; and John Boucher of Biddeford, his daily coffee companion.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Donna (Dixon) Noble; two sons, Roger E. Noble Jr., Renn Eric Noble and his wife Andrea, a daughter Roxanne Elizabeth Bennett and her husband David, who was a wonderful and close son-in-law, all of Kennebunk; four grandchildren, Joy Bennett Swanson and her husband Joseph, David Michael Bennett, Brittney Rae Bennett, and Emma Rae Noble all of Kennebunk; two brothers, Frank A Noble Jr. of Waterboro and David Noble of Kennebunk; one sister, Pearl Desautels of Ellsworth; and several nieces and nephews.

A brother Thomas died previously.

A Celebration of Life was held Wednesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Blanche Chabot, 82

BIDDEFORD - Blanche L. Chabot, 82, of Dupont Avenue, died June 29, 2002, at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Biddeford on April 20, 1920, a daughter of Joseph Louis and Fabiola (Beaudette) Bouffard, and was educated in local schools.

On Nov. 5, 1939, she married Paul e. Chabot in St. Andre's Church. He died Jan. 16, 1998.

She worked for 24 years at Pepperell Manufacturing, retiring in 1962.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Relatives say the love of her live were her husband and family and she was dedicated to helping those in need. She looked forward to daily visits from her children, grandchildren and friends. She was a mother and a great-grandmother of twins and enjoyed knitting and sewing.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Church.

Surviving are five sons, Paul E. Jr. of Sanford, Robert of Biddeford, Steven of Saco, Mark of Dayton and Donald of Waterboro; six daughters, Priscilla Armstrong, Helen (Mrs. Ronald) Nadeau, Diane (Mrs. James) Saucier, and Claire (Mrs. Anthony) Paul, all of Biddeford, Patricia (Mrs. Roger) Rondeau of Oakdale, Conn. and Donna (Mrs. Timothy) Groat of Lyman; two brothers, Joseph Bouffard of Kissimmee, Fla. and Leonel Bouffard of Saco; one sister, Marie-Ange (Mrs. Edwin) Perreault of Biddeford; 23 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
