Carmen Leah, 78

WELLS - Carmen L. Leah, 78, former resident, passed away Jan. 2, 2002 in York.

He was born May 29, 1923 in Watertown, Mass., the son of Antonio and Helen (Westerberg) Leah. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire he enlisted in the Army where he flew a total of 82 missions in World War II.

After the war he was employed in Boston, Mass., where he became the president of the National Federation of H.U.D.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; one sister, Ruth; two sons, Christopher and Matthew; one daughter, Candace; and three grandchildren, Nicholas, Anthony and Alexandra.

A memorial service will be held in June. Arrangements are by the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Van Ness Lush, 72

KENNEBUNKPORT - Van Ness "Bunty" (Maling) Lush, 72, of Beachwood Avenue, died Dec. 17, 2001, at her residence after a long illness.

She was born Sept. 23, 1929 in Biddeford, the daughter of L. Clifford and Louise (Emmons) Maling, and was a graduate of Kennebunkport High School, class of 1947, and Westbrook Junior College.

She was a kindergarten teacher with the Eliot School system for a brief time, and owned and operated Housekeeping Cottages in Kennebunkport for 35 years.

She was active in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and worked for the town census, ballot clerk and voter registration in Kennebunkport, and was active in politics.

Her interests included reading, books, fishing, jigsaw puzzles, collecting collectibles, and traveling.

She and her husband spent winters in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Ernest Lush of Kennebunkport; one son, John Lush and daughter-in-law Faith of Kennebunk; one daughter, Vicki Lush of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; one brother, Laurin Maling of Sanford; and two grandsons, Cameron and Dillon, both of Kennebunk.

A celebration of her life was held Saturday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Glenna Moore, 85

WEST KENNEBUNK -Glenna May Moore, 85, a resident of Old Falls Road, West Kennebunk, died Jan 4, 2002 at the Southridge Living Center in Biddeford after a long illness.

She was born in Dover, N.H. on Nov. 3, 1916, a daughter of George S. and Alice (Shuffleburg) Robinson. She attended Kennebunk schools.

She was employed by the Kennebunk Laundry for 15 years, she also drove for the Headstart program in early 1970s. She also worked at the former Shawmut Inn in Kennebunkport as prep work for several years.

She enjoyed camping with her family, playing cribbage and also especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband, Elroy G. Moore, a son Everett Moore, and grandson Elroy Moore.

She is survived by one daughter, Brenda J Owens of West Kennebunk; one brother, Edmund Robinson of West Kennebunk; six sisters, Dorothy Wing of Belfast, Eleanor Houde of Sanford, Nellie Phillips of Scarborough, Polly Ratcliffe, Phyllis Lock and Allagra Levine all of Alaska; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held Monday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Arlene Pease, 70

SPRINGVALE - Arlene B. Pease, 70, of Pleasant Street, died Jan. 4, 2002, at Goodall Hospital in Sanford after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Rollinsford, N.H. on March 1, 1931, a daughter of Clifton L. and Georgianna (Lavigne) Maloy Sr. and was a graduate of Kennebunk High School.

A former resident of Mansfield, Conn., she was employed at the Mansfield Training Center. She moved to New Port Richey, Fla., and was employed in several local nursing homes as a nurses aid. She moved back to this area in 1996.

She was a member of the Robekahs in Jewett City, Conn. and a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Plainfield, Conn.

She enjoyed dancing to polka music in her younger years.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Francis "Frank" Schlehofer in 1967, and by her second husband, Charles A. Pease in 1990.

She is survived by a daughter, Lisa Manning of Burlington, Mass.; one brother, Clifton L. Maloy Jr. of Sarasota, Fla.; one sister, Pauline Hubbard of Kennebunk; and several nieces and nephews, including a special grandniece her "very bestest friend" Tasha Cate.

Services and burial will take place in New Port Richey, Fla.

John Bartok, 64

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - John A. Bartok, 64, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., passed away Feb. 10, 2002 at his residence.

Born in Connecticut, and having grown up in Westchester County, N.Y., he had been a longtime resident of Ogunquit since the late '60s.

During his tenure he was very active in the community and local politics, even serving for a short time as town selectman.

Prior to retirement he was an accomplished artist and the proprietor of Creative Printing and Design, a local printing concern.

He was the recipient of many awards in national juried competitions.

He was listed in "Who's Who" and was a member of the New England Watercolor Society. He exhibited in New York at the American Artists Professional League Grand National, the Salmagundi Club, the National Academy of Design in American Watercolor Society and Allied Artists of America exhibitions. Other national juried exhibitions have included Mainstream, Marietta, Ohio; Springfield Museum, Mass.; the Copley Society of Boston; North Shore Art Association, Gloucester, Mass.; and the Ogunquit Art Center in Ogunquit. He had once served on the board of directors of the American Artists Professional league in New York City.

He was an avid golfer and tennis player.

Survivors include his wife of eight years, Karen Bartok of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; one daughter, Kirsten Bartok of San Francisco, Calif.; one son, Jared Bartok of New York, N.Y.; one sister, Anne Clarke and her husband Alan of Oxford, Conn.; his twin brother, Mathias "Matt" Bartok of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one sister, Amy Namnoum and her husband Joseph of Palm City; two step-daughters, Jackie Stevens of Fort Myers, Fla. and Becky Riley of Nashville, Tenn.; one step-son, Andy Stevens of Claremont, N.H.; and six step-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass was celebrated on Feb. 14.

Roland Boucher, 82

SOMERSWORTH, N.H. - Roland "Mickey" J. Boucher, 82, of Atlantic Avenue, Wells, died Feb. 21, 2002 at Sunbridge Rehabilitation and Living Center, Rochester, after a period of failing health.

Born Oct. 11, 1919 in Somersworth, he was the son of Donat and Emiline (Poulin) Boucher.

A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Legion Post 69, VFW Somersworth 4485 and DAV Somersworth.

He was owner/operator of Mickey's Lunch, Main Street, Somersworth, for 35 years, retiring in August 1980.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Rachel Claire (Daigle) Boucher of Wells; two sons, Richard Boucher and his wife Karen of Berwick and Donald Boucher and his wife Paula of Felton, Calif.; two daughters, Linda Fewless and her husband Robert of Rochester and LuAnn Drury and her husband Michael of NewPort Beach, Calif.; one sister, Theresa Hamel and her husband Lionel of Somersworth; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday at St. Martin's Church. Burial will take place in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth at a later date.

Marcella Ellsworth, 89

FALMOUTH - Marcella M. Ellsworth, 89, resident of Sedgewood Common in Falmouth died Feb. 29, 2002 at her residence following a long illness.

She was born Nov. 27, 1912 in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of Thomas and Ida Mahr and attended schools in Brooklyn.

She has been a resident of Falmouth for three years coming from Portland. She had also previously been a resident of Kennebunk for many years.

While in Kennebunk she was a communicant of Saint Mary's Church of Wells.

She was predeceased by her husband, Merton S. Ellsworth who died in 1993, a daughter Therese M. Ellsworth who died in 2001 and two sisters.

She is survived by two sons, David M. Ellsworth of Scarborough, and Edward J. Ellsworth of Tacoma, Wash.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Feb. 21 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, with the Rev. Joseph Ford officiating.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, 321 Port Road, Wells, ME 04090 in Mrs. Ellsworth's memory.

Stephen Lang, 64

BROCKTON, Mass. - Stephen M. Lang, 64, of Brockton, died Feb. 20 at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Born in Roslindale, he lived in Whitman where he graduated high school. He was in the U.S. Navy for a short time and later worked in the South Shore area as a house painter, retiring in the early '70s, due to poor health.

He moved to Brockton in 1993 and spent much of his time out on his Rascal Scooter, socializing. He had an extensive collection of records and enjoyed his music, and also was quite artistic, having done a number of oil paintings.

He is remembered as being a generous and giving person.

He was the husband of the late Judy (Robinson) Lang of Marblehead, and the late Ann (McGee) Lang of Wells.

He is survived by one brother David S. Lang of Glastonbury, Conn.; one sister, Muriel L. Dewar of Holbrook; several nieces and nephews; and his friend, Pauline Gorman of Brockton.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Winthrop Congregational Church in Holbrook, Mass. Burial will be private.

Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Hugh Miller Sr., 71

ROCHESTER, N.H. - Hugh Ronald Miller Sr., 71, of 199 Washington St., died Feb. 21, 2002 at home after a period of failing health.

He was born Jan. 24, 1931 in Rochester, N.H., the son of the late Douglas and Edith (Jackson) Miller. He was a lifelong resident of Rochester, N.H. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1953 and had received the Purple Heart. He worked at Cullens Cleaners, Davidson Rubber Company for 14 years then retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying deer and rabbit hunting, fly fishing and brook fishing. He also enjoyed politics, local and national.

Members of his family include his wife of 43 years, Elaine (McKenna) Miller of Rochester, N.H.; two sons, Hugh Ronald Miller Jr., of New Durham, N.H. and Scott W. Miller of Milton, N.H.; one daughter, Tammy Miller Traniello of Wells; five grandchildren, Andrew and Beau Miller of New Durham, N.H., Danielle and Jacob Miller of Milton, N.H. and Raquel Traniello of West Rockport; one brother, John Miller and one sister, Edith Douglas, both of Rochester, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held Monday in the chapel of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, Rochester, N.H.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Nancy Miller

KENNEBUNKPORT - Nancy (Taylor) Miller of Cape Porpoise died on Feb. 21, 2002 after a brief illness.

The daughter of Joseph Taylor and Margaret (Currier) Taylor, she was born in East Orange, N.J., Sept. 16, 1905. Her life spanned the 20th century and into the 21st. From a world of horse-drawn carriages, icemen, and gas lamps, she witnessed in her lifetime the triumphant arrival of electricity and plumbing, machines for washing clothes and dishes and refrigerating food, automobiles and highways, telephones, antibiotics, air and space travel, movies, radio, TV, and computers.

Raised in an upper-middle-class world of servants, private girls schools, extensive summer tours of Europe, she graduated from Smith College in 1927 and later earned a master's degree in library science from Rutgers University. For a number of years she worked as the head librarian at the Veterans Hospital in Lyons, N.J.

After many summers in Cape Porpoise, she moved there permanently in 1966. Once settled, she served the greater community as a volunteer at Webber Hospital in Biddeford (now Southern Maine Medical Center) and at the Graves Library in Kennebunkport. She also played an active role in the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Kennebunk and the Kennebunkport Historical Society.

Always energetic and young at heart, she took up downhill skiing in her 60s and ascended in a hot air balloon on her 80th birthday.

Her beloved husband Harold Miller died in 1969. She is survived by one daughter Nan Reale of Ticonderoga, N.Y.; one son Douglas Miller of Cape Porpoise; and three grandchildren, Arden Miller of Boston, Gilman Miller of San Francisco, and Scott Reale of Los Angeles.

Rather than flowers, contributions to the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, PO Box 28, Cape Porpoise, ME 04014, would be appreciated.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Edward Morse, 79

WELLS - Edward Morse, 79, of Chapel Road, passed away Feb. 18, 2002 at the H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford after a brief illness.

He was born June 21, 1922 in Wells, a son of Arthur M. and Madge (Carll) Morse. He graduated from Wells High School in 1939. He then graduated from the Wentworth Institute from the course of machine work and toolmaking class of 1942. He remained at Wentworth Institute as an assistant instructor. He had also worked at Harvard University's Underwater Sound Laboratory.

In 1944, he entered the United States Navy, working as a machinist until 1946 when he joined his father in the family business. He greatly enjoyed being the sawyer in the family sawmill from 1946 through 2001 along with working in the family woodlots. He was an advocate for sound forest management.

Morse was an excellent machinist with the ability to diagnose problems, repair or make almost any part from metal. He enjoyed the challenge of repairing what others could not.

He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He was a member of the York County Fish and Game Association and participated in competitive skeet shooting. He had been a life member of the National Rifle Association and the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine. He had been a 55-year member of Ocean Lodge 142 AF & AM in Wells, the Wells Beach Hose Company and the Small Woodlot Owners Association of Maine. He was a trustee of Ocean View Cemetery, later serving as president. He also served on the Ethel M. Weymouth Scholarship Committee.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Miriam (Mathews) Morse; one son and wife, Martin and Sally Morse and daughter, Barbara Morse; three grandsons, Nathan, Samuel and Seth, all of Wells.

A funeral was held Saturday at the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Spring Interment in Ocean View Cemetery.
