Bernard O'Neil Jr., 67

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Bernard F. O'Neil Jr., 67, formerly of Chicago, Ill. and Winter Park, Fla., passed away on Feb. 8, 2002, after a long illness.

The son of the late Bernard F. and Helen (Carnes) O'Neil, was born in Boston and raised in Belmont, Mass. He also spent many summers with his family in Cape Neddick.

Upon graduation from Boston College in 1957, he joined the accounting firm of Coopers & Lybrand (currently, PricewaterhouseCoopers) as a staff accountant and subsequently achieved partnership status. During his tenure with Coopers & Lybrand, and until his retirement in 1984, he was the National Industry chairman for Health Care Services and was the co-author of six publications relating to health care management.

He is survived by three sons, Anthony G. and his wife Wendy of Gorham, Bernard F. III of Dover, N.H. and Sean T. and his wife Amiee of Chicago, Ill.; one daughter, Kathleen M. Battistone and her husband William of Lake Villa, Ill.; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He also leaves one brother, Kevin G. and his wife Diane of Ogunquit; one sister, Helen C. Casey and her husband William of Lyman, Mass. He was also the brother of the late Anthony G. O'Neil.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 299 Maine St., Gorham.

Aura Sampson, 64

WELLS - Aura "Tracy" Sampson, 64, of Chick Crossing Road, died Feb. 21, 2002, at her daughters residence on North Street, Saco, after a very sudden illness.

She was born Jan. 4, 1938 in Houlton, the daughter of Arthur and Lillian (Cox) Tracy, and was a graduate of Kennebunk High School, class of 1956.

After graduation, she entered the U.S. Army, and served until 1959, when she received her honorable discharge and returned to Kennebunk.

She was employed as an office worker and bookkeeper with several local business, including P.S.I. for many years, and most recently as a receptionist with Woodman, Edmands Danylik & Austin in Biddeford.

She was a member of Madonna Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, was known for her creativity. She enjoyed quilting and crafts, animals, and was an avid football fan.

She was predeceased by a sister, Marjorie Casey, who died just a month ago.

Survivors include four daughters, Margo Sampson Adair of Old Orchard Beach, Stacy (Sampson) Cleary of Saco, Kathy Sampson of Sanford, and Kris Sampson of South Waterboro; two brothers, Arthur Tracy Jr. of Wells, and Preston Smith of Kennebunk; one sister, Alma Cobb of Westbrook; and five beloved grandchildren, Kate, Courtney, Taylor, Matthew, Shania.

A memorial service was held Monday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk. Interment was in Pine Hill Cemetery, Wells Branch.

Mary Smith, 81

WELLS - Mary F. Smith, 81, a resident of Burnt Mill Road, died the evening of Feb. 21, 2002, at her daughter's residence in Wells after a long illness.

She was born Nov. 29, 1920 in Auburn, a daughter of Charles and Josephine (Curtis) Mixer, and attended schools in Boston.

She was employed by Court Square Press in Boston, and from 1943 to 1975 resided in Brookline, Mass., before moving to Wells.

She was a member of the Kennebunkport American Legion Post.

She was a loving grandmother and great- grandmother, enjoyed traveling, had attended the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland every year for 30 years, loved animals and flowers.

Survivors include her husband Alvin Smith and one daughter Mary Connolly, both of Wells,; two grandchildren, Marilyn Hussey and Dan MacLeod; and two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Paige Hussey.

Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.

Dorothy Atwood, 90

KENNEBUNK - Dorothy Ellen Atwood, 90, resident of Brown Street in Kennebunk died Jan. 28, 2002 at the Renaissance Nursing Home in Biddeford, following a long illness.

She was born Sept. 16, 1911 in Upton, Mass., a daughter of Samuel and Flossie (Kay) Aldrich. She graduated from Upton High School with the class of 1929 and also was a 1933 graduate of the Worcester Hanneman Hospital Nursing School.

She was employed as a nurse for 20 years at the Milford Hospital in Milford, Mass. and also worked for 50 years for the American Red Cross Associations in Massachusetts and Maine.

She moved to Kennebunk with her husband in 1976 where she worked for 19 years on the FISH program.

She was a member of Christ Church of Kennebunk and was a 72-year member of the Order of Eastern Star of Massachusetts and Maine.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Kenneth and Harland Aldrich and two sisters, Marjorie Monroe and Virginia Aldrich.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Lawrence Atwood of Kennebunk; one son, Steven Atwood of Mendon, Mass.; one daughter, Linda K. and her husband Lanni Wood of Pittsfield, N.H.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held Jan. 31 at Christ Church, Kennebunk with Rev. Stephen Hastings officiating. A graveside committal service was held in the Lakeview Cemetery, North Main Street, Upton, Mass.

Bruce Galeucia, 52

SPRINGVALE - Bruce W. Galeucia, 52, of Springvale, died Feb. 4, 2002 at the New England Medical Center, Boston, Mass.

He was born in York, on Dec. 24, 1949, and was the son of Gordon and Priscilla (Gowen) Galeucia and was a 1968 graduate of Wells High School.

He retired as a game warden after 23 years of service for the state of Maine. He worked mostly in York County but also spent two years in the Dexter/Newport area. He has been employed by Shaine's of Maine for the past three years.

He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was a wonderful cook and had a great sense of humor.

He is survived by his mother, Priscilla Galeucia of Moody; his wife, Stephanie Galeucia of Springvale; four sons, Peter Galeucia of Rockland, Benjamin Galeucia of Springvale, Quinten Galeucia of San Diego, Calif. and Brent Galeucia of Springvale; two daughters, Kimberly Donahue of Dover, N.H. and Whitney Galeucia of Springvale; one brother, Gordon Galeucia of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Pamela Card of Moody and Paula Card of Belgrade; and three grandchildren, Sarah, Allison and Hannah.

A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Cape Neddick Baptist Church, Cape Neddick.

Gladys Berard, 71

WELLS - Gladys Arlene Berard, 71, resident of Thompson Street in Wells died Feb. 1, 2002 at York Hospital following a long illness.

She was born Jan. 20, 2002 in Providence, R.I. She attended schools in Providence.

She has been a resident of Wells for 28 years coming from Rhode Island.

She worked as a homemaker and enjoyed listening to many different types of music. She also enjoyed camping with her husband and spending time with her poodles Penny, Georgie and Ginny.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Genevieve Sylvestre and Katherine Pennington.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Clarence Berard of Wells; one daughter, Nancy Bridges of Wells; and one granddaughter.

Services are private. Spring Interment will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

Isabel Beal, 76

GROTON, Mass. - Isabel Collier Beal, 76, a greatly respected local historian and community member of Groton, Mass., died Jan. 31, 2002 at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Mass.

She was born in Groton, Mass., on Dec. 24, 1925, the daughter of Charles Eli and Mary Isabel (Floyd) Collier. She attended Groton High School, and became the editor of the school paper, The Clarion, in her senior year. She was recognized for writing the class song, to the tune of "A Perfect Day" at her graduation in 1943, she received an award for her essay, "Making America Strong." After graduation, she worked as a telephone operator in Ayer, Mass.

She married Arthur B. Beal of Beals Island, Maine, on Nov. 11, 1944 at the Union Congregational Church. With their daughters, they traveled the world during her husband's tour in the U.S. Navy. She served as Girl Scout leader, as a Sunday school teacher, and as a librarian. While her husband was away at sea, she pursued her passion for reading and collecting books.

After retirement from the Navy, the family moved to Barralock Hill Farm, the Floyd family homestead, she worked at The Groton Inn as a bookkeeper and clerk of the works; at the Groton Community Hospital as a payroll clerk and bookkeeper; and at Leon Hurd's Ayer Corp. as an accountant. She eventually retired to dedicate time to her family, civic projects and the arts.

She was a member of the Groton Historical Society since 1967, serving as secretary for 28 years; as president for four years; and as curator and historian for 30 years. She served as the Groton town diarist for 30 years; as library trustee for six years; on the Archives Committee for two years; and as chairman for the Historical Commission and a member of the Old Burying Ground Commission for 15 years. She also participated as clerk-treasurer and trustee of the Groton Country Club and Graves registration officer for the Groton cemetery Assoc., for 21 years; registrar of voters; secretary of the Centennial of the Library Building in 1994 and on the new Library Expansion Committee and secretary of the trustees from 1995 to 1998. She was christened in and attended the Union Congregational Church.

She was actively involved in many national charities and organizations, including: the Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society Christmas Fund; Children International; Pine Tree Society in Bath; Girl Scouts of America; Quonset Point Navy Wives Club; Sawtell School Association; Friends of Gladys Taber; National Guild of Pearl K. McGown Rug Hookrofter; Friends of the Trees; the Barchester Book Club and the Beals Island Historical Society.

As a historian, she researched her family lines back to the 1630s, when Gov. Winthrop's Fleet sailed to America. Her ancestry relates to Lydia Eliot, wife to James Pennimman and sister to John Eliot, known as the "Apostle to the Indians," who translated the Holy Bible in the Indian language.

She was a registered Republican, and never failed to vote in any local, state, or national election. She campaigned actively for "Gusty" Hornblower and became her campaign chairman when she ran for state representative in 1988, and she remained so until Gusty's untimely death in 1994. She has since supported Robert Hargraves.

In 1992, she was awarded the Groton Grange Community Service Award. Recently, the Groton Board of Selectmen awarded a proclamation of "Isabel Beal Day" in her honor. She researched, wrote and contributed to many books and publications, the more recent ones: "Edmund C. Tarbell" by Laurene Buckley and "Forgotten Tales of Groton," by Charles Emil Ruckstubl.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur B. Beal of Groton, Mass.; two daughters, Marcia Beal Brazer and her husband Norman Brazer Jr. of Ogunquit and Deborah Beal Normandin and her husband Eugene Normandin of Lunenburg, Mass.; two grandchildren, Sarah Brazer Campbell and her husband Chad Campbell of Lanal City, Hawaii and William Fletcher Brazer and his wife Sara M. Brazer of Burlington, Vt.; one great-granddaughter, Isabel Campbell of Lanal City, Hawaii; two brothers, David Hurd Collier and his wife Sally Collier of Penn Valley, Calif. and Philip Hurd Collier of Floreno, Mass.

A funeral service will be held at the Union Congregational Church, Main Street, Groton, today at 10 a.m. burial will be at the Graves Cemetery. Arrangements are made by Badger's Funeral Home in Groton.

LeRoy Kast Jr., 86

EAST HERKIMER, N.Y. - LeRoy Kast Jr., 86, of 205 Zoller Avenue, East Herkimer, husband of the late Esther G. (Leonard) Kast, passed away with his family at his side on the morning of Jan. 30, 2002 at the Valley Health Services.

He was born on Sept. 5, 1915, in Herkimer, the son of the late LeRoy and Lillian (Maxfield) Kast Sr., and received his education in Herkimer schools.

He joined in married with Esther G. Leonard on Nov. 6, 1937, in Green Island at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. They spent many years enjoying themselves with friends near the ocean on the shore of Maine. The couple had shared in more than 60 blessed years of marriage until the passing of Mrs. Kast on Jan. 25, 1998.

He was employed as a marine engineer with the New York State Canal System for many years. He was a member at one time of the Civilian Conservation Corps. and a former Kiwanis member, and a member of the East Herkimer Fish and Game Club. He had also served as past president of the Herkimer School Board.

Throughout his longtime affiliation with the school district and ever since, he was rightfully proud of his faithful and conscientious service. He participated in the centralization of Herkimer schools and establishment of the Herkimer County Community College.

He was a master carpenter and an innovative wood worker. He practiced this craft throughout his life. He was always ready to offer his woodworking creations whether it would be to a family member of even to a friend, he'd run into on the street. He had a unique and personal sense of humor; one which drew people to him and one which he handed on to his children and in succeeding generations of his family. The Kast family also share many fond memories of the Sunday routine of morning breakfast on Zeller Avenue.

He is survived by his loving family including his son, Jack Kast and his wife Maureen of Ilion; three daughters, Sandra McCarthy of Ilion, Sharon Jaquish and her husband Frank of East Herkimer and Cheryl Masur and her husband Mike of East Herkimer; one sister, Ruth Grannis of Las Vegas, Nev.; eight grandchildren, Robin and William Jones, Janine and Brian Thompson, Deirdre and John Polak, Daniel and Tammy McCarthy, Dean McCarthy and Heather, Rachel Harter and James, Jason Kast and Jessica, Erin Kast and Matthew Masur; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces; nephews; and cousins; and inlaws, Lois Kast of Frankfort and Clifford Rockwell of Little Falls.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Richard, Warren and Robert "Scotty" Kast; and four sisters, Charlott Rockwell, Shirley Matthews, Lillian Welch and Beverly Murray.

Funeral services were held Friday at Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, Herkimer, with the Rev. Robert Shinoa officiating. Spring Interment will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family would like to recognize the excellent care offered to them by the staff of the Valley Health Services Pallative Care Unit. Their tremendous support and dedicated attention will always be remembered.

Harry Talbot St., 79

WELLS - Harry J. Talbot Sr. 79, of Berube Circle and former longtime resident of Hudson, Mass., died Feb. 2, 2002 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, after a long illness.

He was born Sept. 4, 1922 in Hudson, Mass., the son of Joseph and Evelina (Guillmette) Talbot, and is a graduate of Hudson High School.

A decorated U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, he received the World War II Victory Medal, American Area Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Bronze Star and Asiatic-Pacific Area Ribbon.

He married Betty Paulino Sept. 8, 1951.

He was employed as a supervisor for the town of Hudson's wastewater treatment plant and was well known for owning and operating Talbot's Corner Store for many years.

After his retirement, he continued to be active, taking trips with his wife and entertaining family and friends. He enjoyed completing home improvement projects with his son. He moved to Wells six years ago.

He loved animals and often took in strays to care for.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Betty Talbot of Wells; one son, Harry Talbot and daughter-in-law, Jeanne Talbot of Hudson, Mass.; one daughter, Cindy Talbot of Wells; one brother, Robert Talbot of Midlothian Va.; one sister, Ursula Mainville of Fla.; and grandson, Joey Talbot of Hudson, Mass.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday at St. Mary's Church, Wells, with Father Joseph Ford officiating. Spring burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

A. Hazen Tufts, 49

WELLS - A. Hazen Tufts Jr., 49, of Bears Den Road, passed away peacefully at his home after a courageous fight with cancer.

He was born May 3, 1952, in Sanford, a son of Arthur Hazen and Sheila A. (Tracy) Tufts. He was a graduate of Wells High School as well as Husson College. While attending Wells High School, he played varsity basketball and had been Junior Class president. He had been an engineering technician at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in North Berwick since 1980.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Wells, the Demolay, and an active fund-raiser for the United Way of York County.

He was predeceased by a sister, Alice Tufts.

Surviving are his parents of Wells; his wife of 26 years, Jo-Ann (Leslie) Tufts, one son, Arthur Hazen Tufts III, both of Wells; one daughter, Tamara Tufts of Kennebunk; two brothers, Marcus and David, both of Wells; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, Route 1, Wells, with Rev. John Simpson officiating. Family flowers only. Arrangements are by the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.
