Sydney Borofsky, 88

OGUNQUIT/NEWTON, Mass. - Syd Borofsky, 88, a resident of Newton, Mass. and Ogunquit, passed away May 14, 2002.

He was a former B.U. athlete and hockey coach, professional musician, music teacher, sailor, sailing instructor.

He was a graduate of Roxbury Memorial High School where he played football and captained the hockey team. He then played the same sports at Hebron Academy in Maine and Boston University. Following graduation from Boston University, he coached the freshman and later the Boston University varsity hockey team. He was associated with his father's textile business, M.J. Borofsky and Sons Inc., in Boston, and he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, Special Services branch, as an athletic instructor.

After his Army discharge, he moved with his wife and son to Newton, Mass., where he was one of the founders of the Newton East Little League and also managed the Oak Hill Cubs team.

During these years, he was also active as a professional musician, first as a saxophonist in dance bands; then as an accordionist and later, playing under his professional name of Syd Boro, as a cocktail lounge organist, in many well-known area restaurants, including the Colonial in Lynnfield, Tallinos in Brookline, and Fantasia's in Cambridge.

He also owned a piano and organ store in Chestnut Hill called Keyboard Music for several years, and later became keyboard sales manager for the Melody Ranch store chain.

Summers, he and his family lived in Perkins Cove, Ogunquit, where he was an avid sailor, giving sailing instructions on his sloop during the day, and, in the evenings, playing piano and organ in the lounges of well-known local restaurants such as the Cliff House, the Tanner House, the Old Cove Steak House, and the Pirate's Cove Inn. Many of the celebrity musical actors and actresses would drop by after their nightly engagements at the famous Ogunquit Playhouse and sing or play duets with him.

He leaves his wife, Frances, of 63 years, and one son, Jonathan and his wife, Francine.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.

June Garland, 80

KENNEBUNK - June B. Garland, 80, a resident of Penny Lane, Kennebunk died May 7, 2002 at the Kennebunk Nursing Center after a long illness.

She was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on Oct. 13, 1921, a daughter of Fred and Vera (Smith) Bentley. She graduated from White Plains High School, White Plains, N.Y. She attended University of Vermont. In her earlier years, she was employed as a dental assistant. She was later employed as a secretary in New York.

Most of her life was spent enjoying her family and as a homemaker. She also enjoyed cooking and reading.

She moved to Kennebunkport in 1983, where she was a member of the South Congregational Church of Kennebunkport and the Arundel Yacht Club in Kennebunkport.

Her husband Arthur R. Garland who died in 1997 predeceased her.

She is survived by three sons, Arthur "Terry" Garland of Cape Porpoise, Fred Garland of Ogunquit and Peter Garland of Harrisburg, Pa.; one brother, Russell Bentley of Cortland, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

Private memorial services were held Friday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Should friends desire, memorial donation may be made to the Laudholm Farm Trust, PO Box 1007, Wells, ME 04043 in Mrs. Garland's memory.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Viola Hanna, 92

ARUNDEL - Viola (Nichols) Hanna, 92, of Log Cabin Road, Arundel, died peacefully at Kennebunk Nursing Center on May 7, 2002.

She was born June 9, 1909, in Granville, N.Y. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest Royal Hanna, who died in 1987, her son, Charles Nichols Hanna, who died in 1998, her grandson, Scott David Hanna, who died in 1979, and her sisters, Myrtle Vredenburgh and Thelma Rhodes.

She is survived by two sons, Ernest Royal Hanna Jr. and his wife Teresa, of Irondequoit, N.Y., and Steven R. Hanna and his wife Linda of Kennebunkport; one daughter-in-law Nancy P. Hanna; one sister, Marianne Kennedy; two brothers, Oscar and Charles Nichols; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was a resident of Granville, N.Y. most of her life. During the period from 1951-1967, she and Ernest moved to Industry, N.Y., where they were houseparents at the State School for Boys. She lived the past two years in Arundel, near her son, Steven, and daughter-in-law, Linda. Up until one month ago, she lived independently in her own apartment, writing letters to her many friends and relatives, reading books, doing crossword puzzles, and visiting with friends.

She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her ancestors were some of the first settlers in the 1630s of Nantucket Island and Marshfield, Mass., and in the 1770s of the Granville, N.Y. area. She was an 80-year member of her home culture and book club in Granville, and has read one book each month for as long as her family can remember.

She was a gentle and loving person to all she knew.

Those wishing may make memorial contributions to: Church-on-the-Cape, PO Box 7663, Cape Porpoise, ME 04014; where she was a member and where she especially enjoyed the hymn-sings before the services. Until recently, she had sung alto in church choirs wherever she lived, and knew nearly every hymn by heart.

A memorial service and Interment were held May 11 in Granville, N.Y.

Jackson King, 75

CAPE NEDDICK - Jackson Perkins King, 75, a resident of Ogunquit Road, Cape Neddick and winter resident of Avon Park, Fla., died May 11, 2002 at his home in Cape Neddick.

He was born in York, on June 8, 1926, a son of Phillip Henry and Helene (Perkins) King. He graduated from Medford (Mass.) High School, class of 1944. He received his BS in education in 1949 and master's degree in education in 1968 from Mass State College in Fitchburg, Mass.

He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Air Corps.

He taught school in Whitinsville, Mass. for 6-1/2 yrs and in Concord, Mass. for 15-1/2 years. He taught industrial arts and coached basketball and baseball.

His philosophy of education was the integration of discipline and teaching. This approach helps students channel their energies and guide their initiatives not only to school work but also to every endeavor in life.

After retirement from teaching in 1971, he followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Sam Jack Perkins who built the Saint Aspinquid Hotel in Ogunquit.

He built Kings Court Motel on Beach Street and managed it for 16 years and it is still owned and operated by the King family.

He enjoyed golf and skiing.

He is predeceased by his sister Jane King Pattee.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Beverly (Cousins) King of Cape Neddick; two sons, Robert H. King and his wife Gail of South Berwick, and Jackson P. King Jr. of Ogunquit; three daughters, Kathy Jane King of Wells, Debra A. Barrett and her husband Andrew of Brooks, Ga. and Jill P. Verhow and her husband Christopher of Ogunquit; one granddaughter, Sierra Drew Barrett.

A Celebration of Life was held Wednesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Priscilla Patrone, 77

KENNEBUNKPORT - Priscilla (Innes) Patrone, 77, semi-abstract painter, teacher, demonstrator and designer died on May 10, 2002 at Kennebunk Nursing Center after a long struggle with cancer.

Patrone was born in Brighton, Mass. and graduated from Needham High School and Katharine Gibbs School in Boston. She worked as an office administrator and designer in the advertising, publishing and medical fields in Boston until she married Cass J. Patrone. With the encouragement of her husband, she founded Needham Art Center in the early 1960s. In addition to managing her home and the thriving business, Patrone was active in the Needham Art Association and became an accomplished palette knife painter and a fine instructor.

She moved to Wells in 1980 where she immersed herself in the art world of southern Maine, finding a kindred spirit in the work and instruction of Ogunquit semi-abstract painter, Val Thelin. In the mid-1980s, Patrone moved to a home/studio of her own design in Kennebunkport where she continued painting, teaching and exhibiting. With the innate sense of design she demonstrated in all graphic mediums, she conceived, drafted and painted the murals which enliven the walls at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

Patrone was a founding member of the Art Guild of the Kennebunks, a founder and coordinator of the Celebration of the Arts event held in the Kennebunks in the 1990s, a member of the Ogunquit Art Association, the Copley Society of Boston, where she was designated a Copley Master, and a former member of the New England Watercolor Society through which much of her work was exhibited. She also exhibited at Allied Artists of America, University of New England, Art East of Rye, New Hampshire, River Tree Arts, Kennebunk and the Bush Presidential Library and Museum in Texas. Her work has won countless awards.

The artist is survived by one brother, George Innes of Canaan, N.H.; three nieces, a nephew, an adopted son and daughter, Philip Patrone of Roanoke, Va. and Nancy Shaw of Framingham, Mass.; and three grandchildren.

No services are currently planned. Memorials may be made in artist's name to the Art Guild of the Kennebunks Scholarship Fund, PO Box 2658, Kennebunkport, ME 04046.

Loretta Pittenger, 69

NORFOLK, Va. - Loretta E. Pittenger, 69, went to be with the Lord on May 11, 2002.

She was born and grew up in Kennebunk and has resided in Virginia for the past 45 years.

She was a deli manager for Giant Open Air Markets and Earle's Markets.

She enjoyed camping, traveling, and spending time with her family. She was very active with the Booster Club at Eastern Academy where her children attended school.

She was predeceased by her husband, William E. Pittenger and her mother, Doris E. Persing.

She is survived by five children, Bonita Golay of Virginia Beach, Columbine Anderson of Riner, Va., Marcus Seavey of Norfolk, Va., Albert Seavey II of Richmond, Va. and William Pittenger Jr. of Portsmouth, N.H.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Arundel Cemetery. Bibber Memorial Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Walter Spicer, 49

RENO, Nev. - Walter Marland Spicer, 49, died unexpectedly on May 6, 2002, at his home in Reno, where he had lived for the past six years.

He was born in Sanford on Dec. 9, 1952, son of Thomas Marland Spicer and Camille Pargellis. He graduated from Ridgefield High School in Connecticut and attended the University of Alaska in Anchorage. He lived in Cape Porpoise for 20 years before moving to Nevada after his mother's death.

He was an extensive traveler, a lover of animals and an avid supporter of PBS. He spent a year as a volunteer at the San Francisco Aids Foundation.

He is survived by one brother, Stephen LaPalme of Kennebunk; and stepfather Tony LaPalme of Sarasota, Fla.

There will be no services. Contributions may be made in his name to the Animal Welfare Society, PO Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094 or to the Nevada Humane Society, 200 Kresge Lane, Sparks, NV 89431.

Pauline Bickford, 76

KENNEBUNK - Pauline B. Bickford, 76, of Cat Mousam Rd., died Oct. 21, 2002 at the Concord Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born June 16, 1926 in Kennebunk and was the daughter of the late Sydney E. and Amelia (Charlotte) Towne.

She lived in Rochester for most of her life until she moved to Kennebunkport. She was a homemaker, a member of the Golden Girls of Kennebunk, and the 50s Club and she volunteered with the Meal on Wheels program. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo. She will be missed by all her friends at the Pine Bluff.

Members of her family include two daughters, Tammy Lis and her husband, Jack of Littleton, N.H. and Pamela Arnost and her husband, Joseph of Nashua, N.H.; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Joseph Lis, both of Littleton; her good friends, Betty and Fred Chisholm of Rochester.

She was predeceased by a son, David Bickford.

Funeral services were held Thursday in the chapel of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, Rochester, N.H.

Burial was in the New Cold Spring Cemetery, East Rochester, N.H.

R. Helen Hebert, 62

ATTLEBORO, Mass. - R. Helen Hebert, 62, of Knott Street, Attleboro, died Oct. 27, 2002 at the Life Care Center of Attleboro. She was the wife of Norman J. Hebert St., to whom she was married on May 2, 1959.

Born in Attleboro, Mass., on Dec. 4, 1939, she was a daughter of the late George L. Sr. and Aurelia R. "Peggy" (Brooks) Paul. She was raised and educated in South Attleboro and North Attleboro. She was a 1957 graduate of North Attleboro High School.

She resided in Attleboro since 1959.

She was employed by the town of Mansfield as a clerk in the town clerk's office for the past two years. She had previously been employed in the corporate offices of RoJacks Supermarkets in Mansfield for two years and had been an executive secretary for the former L.G. Balfour Company in Attleboro for 17 years.

She was a co-owner, along with her husband of Norm's Emporium and Spirits on Park Street in Attleboro.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Attleboro where she was active with church activities including serving as a Cub Scout den mother.

She was a member of the Women's Guild of the Knights of Columbus - St. John's Council in Attleboro for many years and led the Recreation Committee at L.G. Balfour Company.

She was a member of the chamber of commerce of the Attleboro area.

In addition to her husband of 43 years, she leaves two sons, Norman J. Hebert Jr. and his wife Mary Grady-Hebert of Moody and James S. Hebert Sr. of Attleboro, Mass.; two sisters, Barbara Tetreault of Memphis, Tenn. and Mary LaFlamme of Sarasota, Fla.; one brother, George L. Paul Jr. of Riverside, Calif.; four grandchildren, Joseph Hebert and Christopher Hebert, both of Moody, Darianna Shirinian of Attleboro and James S. Hebert Jr. of Attleboro; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Therese Hebert.

Funeral services were held Wednesday from the Commonwealth Chapel of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, Mass., followed by a concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph's Church, Attleboro. Private burial was in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Attleboro.

Arrietta Hersom, 84

SANFORD - Arrietta A. Hersom, 84, of Sanford, died late in the evening of Oct. 25, 2002.

She was born on Nov. 22, 1917, a daughter of Leroy and Myrtle (Stone) Cotton.

A homemaker most of her life, she enjoyed her family and her flowers and plants. She enjoyed traveling with her sister, Laura Willey and going to lunch with her daughter, Eleanor.

She loved her vegetable garden and canned a lot of the vegetables she grew.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, George Hersom; one daughter, Eleanor Borque of Springvale; two sons, George Jr. and Carol Hersom of Shapleigh; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Tuesday at the Heald Funeral Home, Springvale. Burial followed at Riverside cemetery in Springvale.
