Roger Lovejoy, 84

BIDDEFORD - Roger W. Lovejoy, 84, a resident of York Manor, Biddeford formerly of Kennebunk and Sanford, died Oct. 22, 2002 at the Southern Maine Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born in Kennebunk on Jan. 28, 1918, a son of Willis A. and Laura (Johnson) Lovejoy.

He attended Kennebunk Schools and served in the U.S. Army.

He was a machinist for Navy Yard and Saco Defense for several years.

He was a self-employed as truck driver for many years, he also worked for the York County Coast Star delivering newspapers for many years.

He was previously married to Sophie (Toresco) Lovejoy for 25 years, the mother of his children.

He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn Lovejoy.

He is survived by his nine sons, Larry W. and his wife Kathleen of South Berwick, Richard J. and his wife Robin of North Berwick, Leon D. and his wife Ruth of Kennebunk, Paul of Kennebunk, Keith and Kenneth, both of Kennebunkport, Robert S. and his wife Brenda of Arundel, Willis A. and his wife Diane of Kennebunk, Peter B and his wife Lisa of Arundel; one daughter, Sally Lovejoy Holbrook of Arundel; 18 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held Friday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, with the Rev. Stephen Hastings officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Henry Pickering, 77

KENNEBUNKPORT - Henry B. "Hank" Pickering, 77, of Kennebunkport, passed away Oct. 25, 2002, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford with his family by his side.

He was born in Salem, Mass., on June 24, 1925, a son of John and Ruth (Benson) Pickering, attended the Loomis School, and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was employed as a hardware consultant in the New England area for many years before starting his own business.

In recent years, he took great pleasure in studying maritime history and served as curator at the Pickering House, his ancestral home in Salem, as well as the Kennebunkport Maritime Museum. He was a member of the Marine Society at Salem and a founding member of the Arundel Yacht Club. His lifelong love of sailing and a good yarn have made him friends along the Eastern seaboard.

He is survived by three sons, Henry Benson Pickering Jr. of Arundel, Christopher Jackson Pickering of Jupiter, Fla., and Michael Ashley Pickering of Kennebunk; three daughters, Judith Pickering of Orlando, Fla. and Nina Lee Pickering of New York, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Cyrus Benson Gould, Henry Benson Pickering III, Hannah Benson Pickering, Christian Thomas Pickering, Meghan Rebecca Pickering, and Emily Elizabeth Pickering; and two brothers, Timothy Pickering and Richard Pickering.

A memorial service was held Tuesday at the South Congregational Church, Kennebunkport at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Hank's memory may be made to: The Marine Society at Salem, c/o Alan P. Vaughn, PO Box 48, Prides Crossing, MA 01965.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

William Blind

LANCASTER, Pa. - William Charles Blind died at home Oct. 26, 2002 after a long illness. He was also a resident of Kennebunkport, Maine and Beaufort, S.C.

He was born in Chicago on May 18, 1911 to Josephine K. and William A. Blind.

He graduated from the University of Notre Dame, A.B., cum laude, and Harvard Law School, JD 1935. He was a long-term partner of Kelley, Drye, and Warren, New York City. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy; served in the European theater in World War II; was a past board member of the Englewood Hospital Association, Henry Farmer Foundation and others. He was a member of the Hamilton Club, Lancaster Country Club, the New York Yacht Club, the Mid-Ocean Club (Bermuda), the Kennebunk River Club, the Cape Arundel Golf Club and the Webhannet Golf Club (Maine), the Dataw Island Club (S.C.).

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Peggy A. Blind (ne Kauffman), one brother, Robert J. Blind; two children, William C. Blind Jr. and Anne C. Cook, both of New York City; four grandchildren, Rebecca C. Blind, Burroughs C.L.W. Blind, Cutler C.T. Cook and Crosby P.C. Cook.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Leo the Great, Lancaster, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Hospice of Lancaster County, PO Box 4125, 685 Good Dr., Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.

Eugene Penrod, 58

WELLS - Eugene S. "Gene" Penrod, 58, of Wells, died Nov. 30, 2002 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford after a long illness.

He was born in Wilkinsburg, Pa., on Nov. 3, 1944, the son of Arthur Eugene and Roberta Jean (Carothers) Penrod.

He attended schools in Pennsylvania, and was an honors graduate of Northeastern University in Boston.

He served with the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1967.

He was employed for many years as a police officer for the town of Weston, Mass., retiring several years ago due to disability. In his retirement, he owned and operated Penrod and Associates Private Investigations in Portsmouth, N.H.

He served on the Games Organizing Committee for the Special Olympics in New Hampshire. He also was a partner with the Telephone Pioneers of America. "Poppy" enjoyed boating and fishing, especially with his grandson, Tyler.

He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Anita M. (Curran) Penrod of Wells; his stepmother, Crystal Penrod of Turtle Creek, Pa.; three sons, Scott Penrod, Christopher Penrod, Shawn Penrod, one daughter, Kelly Penrod, all of Massachusetts ; two stepsons, Eric Chick of Dover, N.H. and Douglas Chick of Cumberland; one brother, Gary Penrod of Glenshaw, Pa.; two nieces; one nephew; and his beloved grandson, Tyler James Chick of Wells.

A memorial service was held Wednesday at the Cape Neddick Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter LaFortune officiating. Arrangements are through the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, Sanford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Special Olympics, 650 Elm St., Third Floor, Manchester, NH 03101.

Helene Kelly, 77

KENNEBUNK - Helene C. Kelly, 77, a resident of Port Road, Kennebunk, died Nov. 26, 2002 at the Maine Medical Center, Portland, after complications following minor surgery.

She was born in Old Town on Feb. 9, 1925, a daughter of Lawrence P. and Emily (Taylor) Comer. She graduated from John Baptist High School in Bangor and also graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in Portland, in 1947. She began her illustrious career at Bronx Zoo in New York City. Over the years, she worked at the New Rochelle, N.Y. hospital, was head of nursing at Peekskill Hospital, N.Y. and later implemented the first Coronary Care Unit in the State of New Hampshire at the Lake Region General Hospital in Laconia, N.H.

After retirement, she and her husband purchased the English Meadows Inn and were the innkeepers there from 1978 to 1989.

She also owned and operated Salt Wind Antiques from 1978 to 1991.

She was an avid antiques collector and reader.

She possessed a wonderful sense of humor and above all else in life, loved and cherished her family, pets and friends. Her dying message to those she leaves behind is "Love, only love, matters. It is the most important thing we do."

She was predeceased by her parents, and beloved brother Lawrence "Lolly" Comer.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Eugene B. Kelly Jr. of Kennebunk; one daughter, Claudia "CoCo" Kelly of Kennebunk; one brother, Tim Comer and his wife Adrianne of Thornton, Colo.; fours sisters, Patricia Barrett and her husband Ernie, and Mary Anne Thibeau, all of Philadelphia, Pa., Nancy Mulligan of Bangor and Sylvia Comer, RSM, who never left her side during her darkest hours and her dear friend Michele Aronica, RSM both of Standish, her brothers in law, Don Kelly and Warren Fitzsimmons, both of Kennebunkport; one sister in law, Dorothy Harkins of Bethesda, Md.; one grand-goddaughter Katie Hedrington of Hyannis, Mass.; and eight grand pets and beautiful nieces and nephews and their children.

A Funeral Mass was held Saturday at St. Martha Church, Portland Road, Kennebunk. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Paul Thurston, 55

KENNEBUNK - Paul Wayne Thurston, 55, resident of Mill Rd., formerly of Biddeford, died Nov. 27, 2002 at Kennebunk Nursing and Rehab Center after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Biddeford on Feb. 3, 1947, a son of Lloyd and Mary Thurston. He attended Biddeford schools and was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Sargent Construction Co. in Old Town.

He is survived by one daughter, Tanya Hanson of Wells; and one brother, Jesssie Thurston of Arundel.

A funeral service was held Saturday at Bibber Memorial Chapel. Interment was in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Saco.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Maine, PO Box 1134, Portland, ME 04104 in Mr. Thurston's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Melville Ellis, 59

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Melville James "Jim" Ellis, 59, who is said to have been so genuinely connected with people that he never felt he met a stranger, died unexpectedly at the UCI Medical Center in Orange, Calif. He was a Newport Beach resident.

At a memorial service at Irvine Presbyterian Church may loved ones shared stories about how funny he was, how much he smiled and how ready he was to find most everything about life a delightful adventure. He collapsed at his insurance firm in Orange and died after efforts to revive him failed.

He is also remembered for being an avid golfer, sailor, traveler, and wood craftsman.

He was born and raised in Pennsauken, N.J., and summered in Cape May where he developed his love of the ocean and sailing. He attended Admiral Farragut Academy and graduated from the University of Connecticut at Hartford with degrees in insurance. His initial employment was with the Hartford group in Connecticut and was transferred to San Francisco and later moved to Irvine, Calif., where he established his own insurance firm.

He is survived by his wife, Jacquie Ellis; four daughters, Lauren Sipelis of Newport Beach, Calif., Rebecca Broderick of Aspen, Colo., Leigh Ellis of San Francisco, Calif. and Jamie Ellis, of Irvine, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Toni Bradley and Tiffany Lewis of California; his father, Melville Joseph Ellis of Kennebunk; one sister, Marjorie Downes of Kennebunk Beach; and two granddaughter, Katie Bradley and Emily Bradley, both of Irvine, Calif.

Family members ask that donations be made to the Jim Ellis Memorial Fund c/o Alzheimer's Association of Orange County, 2540 N. Santiago Blvd., Orange, CA 92867.

Leonora Lund, 87

SACO - Mrs. Leonora Lund, 87, of Seaside Avenue, died Nov. 26, 2002 at Pine Point Nursing.

She was born in Saco, July 15, 1915, a daughter of Ilo and Konstandina (Adams) Anton and graduated from Biddeford High in 1933. She graduated from the University of Southern Maine in Portland with a degree in education and a minor in business.

She was employed as a clerk for the Saco Lowell Shops in 1934, and later became secretary for Lund Mfg. Co., of Biddeford which later became Litton Industries until 1978.

In 1979, she helped establish the Robert Realty in Biddeford, which later became DeWolfe Realty.

She was a member of Southern Maine Medical Center, Women's Auxiliary, and a member of the President's TWIGS. She assisted in cancer and Red Cross blood drives. A member of the York County Board of Realtors.

During World War II, she was a civilian airplane spotter.

She enjoyed skiing, swimming, gardening, antiquing, refinishing furniture and arts and crafts. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wendell Lund in November 1985.

Survivors include two brothers, Dr. Alexander Anton of Cape Elizabeth, and Dr. Thomas Anton of Old Orchard Beach; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Saturday from the Cornerstone United Methodist Church. Burial was in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Should friends desire memorial donations may be made in her memory to a charity of one's choice.

Shirley Brown

WELLS - Shirley M. Brown of Moody, passed away on Nov. 23, 2002.

She is survived by her husband, William R. Brown of Moody; two sons, Russ Hildreth of Kennebunkport and Richard Hildreth of Jaffrey, N.H.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

"Who we are, we still shall be, in the hearts closest to our own."

Anita Larochelle, 79

SACO - Anita B. Larochelle, 79, of 43 Middle St., died Nov. 25, 2002 at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Biddeford on Sept. 17, 1923, a daughter of Willie and Clairina (Lavoie) St. Louis and was educated in Biddeford schools.

On March 28, 1949, she married Robert F. Larochelle in St. Joseph Church, Biddeford. He died April 23, 1985.

She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed cooking, knitting, playing cards and bingo.

Surviving are one son, Marc J. Larochelle of Windham; one daughter, Linda Cameron of Readfield; one sister, Simonne Garriepy of Biddeford; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday at Most Holy Trinity Church, Saco. Burial was in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Saco.

Arrangements are by the Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

Donations in memory of Mrs. Larochelle may be made to the Thornton Academy Alumni Fund, 438 Main St., Saco, ME 04072.

Ronald Allain, 60

SANFORD - Former resident Ronald L. "Ronnie" Allain, 60, of Boca Raton, Fla., died unexpectedly on Oct. 18, 2002 at Community Hospital in Boca Raton.

He was born in Sanford on Oct. 15, 1942, a son of Leonard and Beatrice (Benoit) Allain, attended the former Holy Family School and was a graduate of Sanford High School.

A resident of Florida for the past 15 years, he loved the sea, especially kayaking and ocean navigation.

Survivors include two sons, Michael and John, both of Torrington, Conn.; three brothers, Roger of Windsor, Conn., Raymond of York, and Daniel of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sisters, Doris (Mrs. Edward) Tappe of Lee, Lena (Mrs. Dennis) Desrochers of Biddeford, and Anita (Mrs. David) Spulick of Lebanon.
