Wilbur Ryerson, 91

SANFORD - Wilbur L. Ryerson, 92, of Springvale, formerly of Acton, Maine and Westwood, Mass., died Nov. 18, 2002.

He was born on May 31, 1909 in Somerville, Mass., a son of Harry and Jennie (Rice) Ryerson. He was a graduate of Canton High School and Boston University, class of 1931, where he earned his BS and BBA.

For more than 40 years, he worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance before retiring in 1974.

He was a member of the Springvale Masonic Lodge AF & AM , the Springvale First Baptist Church, and the Handel Hyden Society singers of Boston.

He enjoyed the outdoors, particularly fishing and skiing. He also enjoyed singing in the church choir and was often asked to be a soloist for special occasions.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Frances (DuBell) Ryerson of Springvale; two sons, John L. of South Carolina, and Robert W. of Pembroke, Mass.; one daughter, Nancy C. Kenney of Westminster, Mass.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Saturday at the Heald Funeral Home in Springvale.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Newton Center Activities Fund, 35 July St., Sanford, ME 04073.

Reba Riggin, 77

KENNEBUNK - Reba F. Riggin, 77, of Cat Mousam Rd., formerly of Ogunquit and New York City, died Nov. 12, at Riverridge.

She was born in Litchfield, Ill., on Oct. 25, 1925, a daughter of William and Mina (Junkins) Riggin, attended local schools there, graduated from the University of Illinois and attended Columbia University in New York City.

She was an art teacher in Alton, Ill., for several years, then moved to New York City, where she was employed in various jobs before she became advertising copywriter for J.C. Penney Company for several years. She retired in 1978 and moved to Ogunquit.

There are no known survivors.

Mary Jane Smith, 55

SACO - Mary Jane Smith, 55, of Clayton Drive, died Nov. 15, 2002 at a local hospital.

She was born in Portland, a daughter of Oscar and Gertrude Ann (Loring) Vanier, and attended Cathedral High School.

For the past 25 years, she worked at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was a communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.

Survivors include one daughter, Gina Marie of Dover, N.H.; two sons, Randolph Thomas Vanier of Scarborough and Joseph William Vanier of Old Orchard Beach; one sister, Charlene (Mrs. Daniel) Deering of South Portland; and two grandchildren.

Irene Bickford, 81

SANFORD - Irene F. Bickford, 81, died Nov. 14, 2002 at the Newton Center.

She was born in Bangor on Sept. 13, 1921, a daughter of Percy and Mary (Hutchinson) Sabine.

She was employed by Spurwink Country Kitchen in Scarborough as a cook for many years.

Her husband, Fred Bickford, died in 1971.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Humiston of Westbrook; one sister, Helen Young of Bangor; two granddaughters, Tammy McKenney and Stacey Yankowsky; four grandsons, Fred McKenney, Curtis McKenney, Scott McKenney and Norman McKenney; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Darby, 77

WELLS - Mary Darby, 77, died Nov. 16, 2002 at her home.

She was born Nov. 3, 1925 in Sanford, a daughter of William and Ruby Perkins, graduated from Sanford High School and later attended Vesper George School of Art in Boston, where she studied fashion illustration.

She worked as a model in Boston for fashion photographers.

She lived on Moody Beach for 52 years, enjoying family life, beach walks and gardening. She was an accomplished artist who loved painting watercolors of beach and marsh landscapes.

Her first husband, Ronald Christensen and her second husband, Joseph Darby, to whom she was married for 40 years, died previously.

Surviving are one son, Marcus of York; one daughter, Erica Christensen of Wells; one sister, Jean McGill of Rochester, Minn.; and four grandchildren.

Eldora Boston, 81

WEST KENNEBUNK - Eldora L. Boston, 81, resident of Holland Road, died March 24, 2002 at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.

She was the widow of Ralph Boston.

She was born May 4, 1920 in Skowhegan, the daughter of Ernest P. and Louise M. (Gilmore) Bishop, and was a graduate of Kennebunk High School.

She was employed for many years as a stitcher with the Kesslen Shoe Shop in Kennebunk. On May 15, 1967, the Animal Welfare Society Board voted to have her "operate and host the shelter" and shortly after that at the invitation of Mrs. Boston, the newly named Animal Welfare Society moved its shelter to the Ralph and Eldora Boston Farm on Old Holland Road, West Kennebunk.

In October 1985 she retired as shelter manager after 18-1/2 years.

She continued residing next to the shelter with many of her own animals for the next 17 years, often visiting the animals and staff at the shelter.

Survivors include one sister Iris Bushey of Manchester, Conn.; two nephews and one niece; and several great nephews and nieces.

A graveside service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk, with Rev. James King officiating. Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, PO Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME. 04094 in Mrs. Boston's memory.

David Cox, 76

KENNEBUNK - David Cox, 76, of 17 Larboard Lane, died suddenly March 24, 2002 at his residence in Kennebunk.

He was born Jan. 25, 1926 in Yardley, England, a son of Stephen and Margaret (Hardy) Cox and was a graduate of McGill University in Montreal.

He was employed for many years as a chemical consultant, retiring in 1988 from SRI International in Menlo Park, Calif.

He was life member of the Chemical Marketing Research Association.

An avid photographer, he enjoyed nature and landscape subjects most.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Janet Cox of Kennebunk; one son, Robert Cox of Basking Ridge, N.J.; one daughter, Elizabeth Cox of Kennebunk; and two granddaughters.

Services will be private.

Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk.

Marilyn Dempsey, 75

KENNEBUNK - Marilyn A. Dempsey, 75, resident of Huntington Common Drive in Kennebunk died March 25, 2002 at her residence following a long illness.

She was born June 24, 1926 in Chicago, Ill., a daughter of Frank and Margaret (Flannery) Becker. She graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, Ill. with the class of 1944 and received a bachelor's degree in English and drama from Marymount College in Tarrytown, N.Y., graduating in 1948.

She was employed as the advertising director for the York County Coast Star for 20 years retiring in 1991.

She was a communicant of St. Martha Church of Kennebunk.

She was a member of the Senior Center at Lower Village. She enjoyed drama and had participated in a number of local community playhouse productions over the years. She enjoyed traveling, the arts, and mostly enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her brother, Fr. Frederick Becker who died in 1978.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Donald A. Dempsey of Kennebunk; three sons, Peter F. Dempsey of Newton, Mass., Richard P. Dempsey of Kennebunk and Michael R. Dempsey of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Susan Dempsey Rouillard of Kennebunk and Meg Dempsey of Portland, Maine; two sisters, Sr. Barbara Becker of Tarrytown, N.Y. and Joan McCain of Wilmette, Ill.; and nine grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday in St. Martha Church, Portland Road in Kennebunk. Interment will be in the spring.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Maine Children's Cancer Fund, 100 Route 1, Unit 107, Scarborough, ME 04074 or to the Senior Center at Lower Village, 175 Port Road, Kennebunk, ME 04043 in Mrs. Dempsey's memory.

Katherine Fontaine, 71

BIDDEFORD - Katherine T. Fontaine, 71, of Hill Street died March 23, 2002 at her home following a long illness.

She was born in Saco, on April 17, 1930, the daughter of Charles A. and Ora Mae (McGee) Hill and was educated in Saco schools.

On Nov. 25, 1975 she married Robert A. Fontaine in Biddeford.

She worked in area shoe shops for more than 25 years retiring in 1992.

She loved her animals and was partial to poodles. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, soap operas, baking and made an awesome pork pie.

She was predeceased by her parents, Charles A. Hill and Ora Mae Hill, one brother, Frederick G. Hill and two sisters, Margaret Sherwood and Helen Maston.

Surviving are her husband of 26 years of Biddeford; three sons, George Linnie Jr. of Biddeford, Robert Linnie of Lyman, and Roy R. Slowik of Kennebunk; two daughters, Mrs. Victoria (Slowik) Williams of No. Conway, N.H. and Sandra Slowik of Portsmouth, N.H.; one brother, Charles A. Hill Jr. (also known as uncle Chuck) of Saco; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; her poodle Pebbles and her cat Little.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at St. Mary's cemetery in Biddeford on today 11 a.m., with Rev. Burton Howe officiating. Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005.

Pasquale Fulginiti, 73

PAXTON, Mass. - Pasquale W. "Pat" Fulginiti, 73, former owner of the Paxton Inn, died March 21, 2002, in UMass-Memorial Medical Center, University Campus after an illness.

His wife of 44 years, Mary (Leland) Fulginiti, died Sept. 1, 1999.

He leaves one son, Michael Fulginiti of Auburn and Wells; one daughter, Maria Millionis of Paxton; two brothers, Frank Fulginiti of Shrewsbury and William Fulginiti of Sarasota, Florida; one sister, Catherine Fulginiti of Shrewsbury; one grandson, Christopher Fulginiti; and many nieces and nephews.

A son, Steven Fulginiti died Nov. 28, 1999, three months following his mother. Three brothers, Samuel Fulginiti, Joseph Fulginiti and Anthony Fulginiti and two sisters, Alice Fulginiti and Florence Fulginiti all predeceased him.

Born in Worcester, son of Pasquale and Maria Rose (Lupisella) Fulginiti, he graduated from Commerce High School and in 1952 from the College of The Holy Cross. He lived many years in Worcester before moving to Paxton in 1962.

He owned the Paxton Inn in Paxton Center from 1977 until he retired in 1988, he had previously owned a pub/nightclub in Worcester from 1972 until 1978, and had worked for more than 20 years with Boston Mutual Insurance Company before he retired as regional manager in 1972. He was a member of Saint Columba Church, a cofounder of the Indian Hill Association, the Order Sons of Italy in American Lodge 168, he was active with Paxton Little League, and enjoyed gardening, skiing, and golfing, and was a frequent visitor to Wells.

A memorial Mass was held Tuesday in Saint Columba Church, Paxton. Burial of cremated remains followed in Moreland Cemetery, Paxton.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Age Center of Worcester Area Inc., 51 Harvard St., Worcester, MA 01609.

Mercadante Funeral Home and Chapel, 370 Plantation St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.

Dorothy Hopkins, 89

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Dorothy (Burnham) Hopkins, 89, former resident of Kennebunkport, and Winchester, Mass., died March 19, 2002 at her daughter's residence in North Andover, Mass. after a long illness.

She was born Dec. 8, 1912 on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada, a daughter of John L. and Nettie H. (Cronk) Burnham, and was a graduate of Melrose (Mass.) High School and Mt. Auburn School of Nursing in Cambridge, Mass.

She was employed as a registered nurse by the Winchester Hospital in Winchester, Mass. for 25 years.

Survivors include one son, Paul G. Hopkins of Kennebunkport; one daughter, Cynthia L. Hopkins of North Andover, Mass.; one sister, Eugenie Burnham of North Andover, Mass.; and two grandchildren, Matthew E. Tonello and Rebecca E. Tonello.

A graveside service was held Friday at Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport, with Rev. Carolyn Lambert officiating.
