Paul Poehler, 97

WELLS - Paul Poehler, 97, of Moody, died peacefully during the afternoon of Dec. 28, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center, after living a life most people only dream of. He was still going strong at 97.

He was born Aug. 31, 1905 in Everett, Mass. He recalled at age 7 hearing about the sinking of the Titanic.

After high school he went to Cushing Academy and then to Dartmouth where he graduated in 1930. At Dartmouth, he met fellow classmate Nelson Rockefeller. They became friends and he often told the story of how he lent Nelson $2 to see a football game. Nelson, he said, promptly repaid the loan.

On June 11, 1932, he married the love of his life, Mary Daniel. They were together for the next 64 years. They lived a happy and fulfilled life. He was a devoted husband. After the wedding they held onto each other and joined the rest of the country suffering through the Great Depression.

He was a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II.

After the war he returned home and earned his Ph.D., receiving it at the same ceremony as Sen. Margret Chase Smith. The then began a long and distinguished career in education. He taught school in both Scotch Plains and East Orange, N.J. There he also coached football, basketball, baseball and track. From here he moved to the administration ranks as principal and ultimately served as superintendent. He did this in Hanover, N.H., Wilton, Mass., and Lexington, Mass.

He and his wife moved to Maine in 1969 where they continued to be very active. He taught at UNH, was superintendent in Arundel, interim superintendent in Wells, and the town manager of Ogunquit. He was an active member of the Wells Congregational Church, delivered Meals on Wheels, and enjoyed singing with a group from his church at local nursing homes.

In his spare time, with the help of then chief of police, Steve Clark, he led a drive to outfit the entire Wells Police force with bullet-proof vests. He also loved to play bridge and attended exercise classes at the Dunaway Center.

At 93 he joined a nationally recognized pool league and at one point was the oldest registered player in the country. Often driving to pool halls by himself to practice, mush to the chagrin of his family.

His spirit continues through the lives of his daughter, Ann, his grandchildren Jennifer and Andrew, their spouses and great-grandson, Jackson, and all others that knew and loved him. Amen!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Maine Center for the Blind in Portland.

A celebration of his life will be held on Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Wells Congregational Church, Wells.

Arrangements are by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.
