Guy Coombs, 25

WELLS - Guy Erland Coombs, 25, a resident of Wells, Maine and Bridgeport, Conn. died Jan. 25, 2003 as a result of a homicide in Kansas City, Mo.

He was born in Dover, N.H. April 19, 1977, a son of William Coombs and Denise (Beaulieu) Marby. He attended Wells schools and graduated from Wells High School where he excelled in football, baseball and basketball. He also was on the school's honor roll. Following his graduation he attended Hebron Academy in Hebron, Maine, again excelling in the football program at Hebron. He then went on to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree.

He was employed in New York City and more recently with the Cerner Corporation, a medical software company in Connecticut.

He enjoyed traveling, skiing, fishing, golfing and the outdoors.

He is survived by his mother, Denise Marby of Wells; his father and step-mother William F. and Anna Coombs of South Berwick; his girlfriend, Isa Simmons of Bridgeport, Conn.; one brother, Keith Marby of Wells; one sister, Alicia Coombs of South Berwick; his maternal grandmother, Ruth Talpey of Lemon Grove, Calif.; his maternal grandparents, Erland and Colleen Coombs of Wells; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral Mass was said Monday at St. Mary's Church, Wells with the Rev. Joseph Ford officiating the Mass. Interment will be Ocean View Cemetery, Wells later in the spring.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Pee Wee Football Program in care of WOYFCA, PO Box 681, Moody, ME 04054 in Guy Coombs' memory.

Charles Foss Jr., 43

CONNECTICUT - Charles H. Foss Jr., also know as "Howie" by his friends, 43, died unexpectedly at his home on Jan. 28, 2003.

He was born in Saco on March 18, 1959, the son of Charles Howard and Joyce Mae Foss. He attended Kennebunk schools.

For the past year he had been living in Connecticut. He was employed by an elementary school as its custodian. He loved the beach, skiing and could often be found socializing with his friends.

He was predeceased by a sister, Denise Bryant in August.

He is survived by one son, Charles Tyler Foss of Alfred; one daughter, Shyla Rose Foss of Ohio; one sister, Rhonda-Jo Foss of Arundel; four nieces and two nephews.

A service was held Tuesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Richard Stone, 75

WEST KENNEBUNK - Richard L. Stone, 75, a resident of Alfred Road, West Kennebunk, died Jan. 31, 2003 at his home after a long illness.

He was born in Williamsett, Mass. on Sept. 13, 1927, a son of Gerald L. and Elizabeth (Charette) Stone. He attended Kennebunk schools.

He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and the Korean War.

He was employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a welder foreman for 25 years and he retired in 1985.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 74 and the VFW Post 6548, both of Kennebunk.

He and his wife Alice celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 16, 2002.

He enjoyed the outdoors and numerous building projects including two family homes. He was a kind, caring, and supportive father.

He was predeceased by his brother, Adelbert Stone who died in 1998.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Alice B. (Roy) Stone of West Kennebunk; one daughter, Doreen L. Stone of West Kennebunk; one brother, Roger Goodwin of West Kennebunk; his special foster grandson Kevin B.; several nieces and nephews; and his family dog, Hailey.

A funeral Mass was held Tuesday at St. Martha Catholic Church, Kennebunk with the Rev. Laurant Laplante officiating. Spring Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330, in Mr. Stone's memory.

Gunnar Brobeck, 80

SCARBOROUGH - Gunnar Nils Brobeck, 80, of 290 Route 1, Scarborough and formerly of Wells, died Jan. 30, 2003 in the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, after an illness.

His wife of 46 years, Mary S. (Young) Brobeck died on Aug. 6, 1991.

He leaves one son, Kevin Brobeck and his wife, Rosemarie of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Elizabeth Dolan and her husband, John of Lancaster, Mass. and Susan Myette and her husband, Robert of Shirley, Mass.; one sister, Asta Broderick of Blacksburg, Va.; one brother, John Shonbeck of Swanzey, N.H.; four grandchildren, John Dolan of Lancaster, Mass., Peter Myette of Shirley, Mass. and David and Kirsten Brobeck of Princeton, Mass.; and his dear friend, Emily Doble of Kittery as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers.

He worked 40 years for Crocker Burbank, Weyerhauser, and James River Paper Companies in Fitchburg, retiring in 1979 after 40 years as a purchasing manager.

He was a veteran of World War II, U.S. Army, participating in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre and the Battle of the Bulge as a tank and heavy machinery driver.

He was an avid gardener, with a love for card playing and traveling. While working at the paper mills, he became well known in Fitchburg for his candlepin bowling prowess, often participating in local and state tournaments. He loved to socialize and be with family and friends and was an avid sports fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics and the New England Patriots.

He was born in Malmoe, Sweden, on Sept. 9, 1922, a son of the late Konzad Walfird Leonard and Bothilda (Wacher) Brobeck and came to the United States at the age of 4 and became a naturalized citizen when he was 21. He was a 1939 graduate of Lunenburg High School.

A funeral service will be held today at 10:30 a.m. in the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., Fitchburg, Mass.

Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Fitchburg.

Calling hours at the funeral home are from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. today.

Flowers may be sent or memorial contributions may be made to the Marlee / Second Chance Animal Shelter, PO Box 552, North Berwick, ME 03906 or to the Heiffer Project, PO Box 1692, Merrifield, VA 22116 or to NEADS, PO Box 213, West Boylston, MA 01583 or may be left at the funeral home.

George Young, 84

KENNEBUNK - George F. Young, 84, a resident of Gendron Lane, Kennebunk, died Jan. 26, 2003 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was the husband of Barbara Anne (Shea) Young.

He was born in Lynn, Mass. June 25, 1918, a son Michael and Alice (Baldwin) Young. He graduated from Lynn English High School, Northeastern University and received his Master in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts. He was employed at the General Electric Company in Lynn, Mass, Somersworth, N.H., was then sent to Schenectady, N.Y. and Fitchburg, Mass. and onto Pittsfield, Mass. and South Portland, Maine. His career with General Electric was in sales and management until 1980.

He moved to the Kennebunks in 1972, where he became a member of the Webhannet Golf Club at Kennebunk Beach.

He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Marchessault.

He is survived by his wife Barbara A. Young of Kennebunk; one brother Gerald A. Young of Titusville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Private services were held at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk with the Rev. Laurent LaPlante officiating. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Somersworth, N.H. later in the spring.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice in Mr. Young's memory.

William Carey

KENNEBUNK - William Augustus Carey of Kennebunk died Jan. 30, 2003 after a brief illness at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

Born in Chicago, Ill. on May 16, 1932, he was the son of the late Azelda (Durham) Armstrong and William A. Carey (died 1933). He was raised by his mother and stepfather, the late Albert N. Armstrong who his mother married in 1937.

He was a 1950 graduate of St. Sebastian's Country Day School, graduated from Boston College in 1954 and Boston College Law School in 1957, and obtained a master's degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1958. Since that time, he practiced law, first in Washington, D.C. and then in Chicago as a member of the U.S. Justice Department's Organized Crime Strikeforce. In 1972, he left a Chicago law firm and moved to Washington to become the first presidentially-appointed general counsel of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He served in that capacity until resigning in 1975 to join a Louisville-based law firm as the resident partner in its Washington office. Here he specialized in major trials, appeals and antitrust and commercial opinion work.

He and his devoted wife, Winifred Carole Becker, spent many summer vacations in Maine from 1973. In 1980, they purchased The Copper Candle in Kennebunkport. In 1994 they sold their home in Potomac, Md., and moved to Kennebunkport.

Beside his wife, he is survived by his three sons, William A. Carey Jr. of Vienna, Va., John B. Carey of Garner, N.C. and E. Alexander Carey of Newark, Del.; two grandsons and four granddaughters; one brother, John D. Armstrong of Walnut Creek, Ca.; and one sister, Mary A. Barry (Mrs. David N.) of Kennebunk; one nephew and one niece.

A funeral Mass was said on Monday at St. Martha's Church, Kennebunk. Spring Interment in Hope Cemetery.

Wallace Murray, 73

SANFORD - Wallace J. Murray, 73, of Sanford, died Feb. 1, 2003 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford after a brief illness.

He was born in Costigan on Feb. 15, 1929, a son of James and Adelaide (Soule) Murray. He came to Sanford as a child and attended Sanford schools.

He was employed for many years as a truck driver with the former Gendron Lumber Company in Sanford, retiring in 1987.

He was a communicant of Notre Dame Church in Springvale.

An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member and past president of the Sanford Springvale Fish and Game Association.

His wife, Irene R. (Nadeau) Murray, died in 1997.

Survivors include one son, Patrick J. Murray of Post Falls, Idaho; three brothers, Robert Murray of Sanford, Ernest Latham of Lewiston, and Frederick Latham of South Portland; one sister, Wilhemena Thornton of Texas; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held in the spring in Notre Dame cemetery in Springvale.

Arrangements are through the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, 29 Winter St., Sanford.

Savoun Kuch, 19

KENNEBUNK - Savoun Kuch, 19, a resident of Port Road, Kennebunk died peacefully Feb. 5, 2003 at the Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford after injuries from a diving accident almost four years ago.

He was born in Thailand on April 14, 1983, a son of Savoeun Kuch and Chhom Yay. He attended Kennebunk High School where he played football and wrestling.

He was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Kennebunk.

He is survived by his mother of Kennebunk and his father of Alfred; two sisters Savy and Sarin Kuch, both of Kennebunk.

A funeral service was held Tuesday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church Parish Hall, Kennebunk with the Rev. Richard Horner officiating.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 2 Lord St., Kennebunk, ME 04043 in Savoun's memory.

George Alex, 72

OGUNQUIT - George J. Alex, 72, of 75 Brookside Circle, Ogunquit, died unexpectedly Feb. 10, 2003 at the York Hospital in York. He was born in Poughkeepsie, son of the late John and Nickie (Papastrat) Alex.

He was in the restaurant business in Connecticut for many years before retiring to Maine. He was a graduate of Ithaca High School, attended Ithaca College and served with the United States Navy during the Korean War.

He is survived by one sister, Mary Alex Bligh of Ithaca; special friend, James L. Ferris of Ogunquit; several cousins including Peter and Nick Stratokos of Ithaca; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be celebrated by Rev. Stephen Lilley on Friday at 11 a.m. at the St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church.

Friends may call on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 at the Bangs Funeral Home, where Trisagion services will be celebrated at 7:30. Burial in Lakeview cemetery will be delayed until spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's memory and directed to the St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church, 120 W. Seneca St., Ithaca, NY 14850.

Ruth Barberie, 84

SANFORD - Ruth T. Barberie, 84, of Sanford, died the evening of Feb. 7, 2003 at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

She was the eldest of the 13 children of Ernest and Helen (Moreau) Thibodeau, originally of Presque Isle, where she was born.

She was well known for her generous spirit.

She was very active in her community and was involved with the Boy Scouts, the Emblem Club, the St. Ignatius PTA and the Ladies of St. Anne. She was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church.

She was employed over the years with the former Puritan Clothing Store, N.J. Gendron Lumber Company of Sanford and the Lane Construction Corporation in Presque Isle.

She spent the next 25 years raising her family. She was a meticulous housekeeper and a creative seamstress.

She worked for 10 years in the Sanford Town Clerk / Tax Collector's office where her pleasant demeanor was a welcome respite for many a taxpayer conducting business there.

She and her husband were married 59 years. They traveled extensively all over North America and Europe.

She was predeceased by a brother, Alfred Thibodeau of Sanford.

Surviving family members include her husband of Sanford; one son, Dr. Michael E. Barberie and his wife, Jill and their children, Sam and Juliette of Redding, Conn.; four daughters, Joyce L. Bagshaw and her husband, David, their son, Aaron and his wife, Adria, of Hollis, N.H., Susan B. Richardson and her husband, Mark D., of Bellingham, Wash., Janet H. Berger and her husband, Jay, and their children, Carlin, Ryan, and Rose of Parsonsfield, Kathleen B. Coffield and her son, Jeremy of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; three brothers, Leo T. Thibodeau of Falls Church, Va., Phillip Thibodeau of Springfield, Mass., Henry Thibodeau of Springvale; eight sisters, Alma Morin, Ernestine Lovell, Catherine Thibodeau, all of Sanford, Cecilia Brown of Pleasant Hill, Calif., Sr. Martha Helen Thibodeau of Waterville, Lucille P. Thibodeau of Anniston, Ala., Claire Garrity of Carlisle, Pa., and Rose Devarenne of Waltham, Mass.; and a sister-in-law, Doris Quagliaroli of Windsor Locks, Conn.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday at St. Ignatius Church. Burial will be in the spring in St. Ignatius Cemetery.
