Madeline Bickford, 96

ESSEX, Mass. - Madeline (Smith) Bickford, 96, of Essex, Mass., wife of the late Leland C. Bickford, died the morning of Feb. 9, 2003 at her daughter's residence in Maine.

Born in Jonesport, Maine on Feb. 23, 1906, she moved to Independence, Mo., at the age of 14. She attended area schools including Kansas City High School. She continued her education at Business College and Keester College of Tailoring and Design. She served in the United States Army during World War II. She served her first two years in the United States as an instructor of basic training and physical education and her last two years she served in Yokohama, Japan as an administrative assistant in the office of the Command General of the 8th Army.

Surviving are one step-daughter and step-son, Carol Bredda of Wells and Leland W. Bickford of Gardner, Maine; 12 grandchildren but most especially Donna Gibbs of Danvers, Carol Corbelle of Byfield, Mary Porcaro of Woburn; many great-grandchildren; one nephew; and three nieces. She was also the grandmother of the late David J. Porcaro Jr.

A graveside service was held Wednesday at the Spring Street Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Essex Council of Aging, Essex, MA 01929.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Campbell Funeral Home, Beverly, Mass.

Ruth Collins, 81

OGUNQUIT - Ruth E. Collins, 81, of Obeds Lane died Feb. 10, 2003 at her residence after a long illness.

She was born in Wells, the daughter of George and Naomi (Ramsdell) Yorke and was a 1940 graduate of York High School.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of York-Ogunquit.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ray E. Collins Sr., who died in 1999.

Survivors include one son, Ray E. Collins Jr., of Rockland; two daughters, Linda Abel of Moody and Florida, and Suzanne Smith of Cape Neddick; one brother, George Yorke Jr., of Cape Neddick; one sister, Barbara West of Ogunquit; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Pauline Nordahl of Plympton, Mass. and Alice Googins of Portsmouth, N.H.

Private services will be held.

Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Raymond Cookson, 76

SANFORD - Raymond "Frank" Cookson, 76, of Sanford, died Feb. 4, 2003 at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford after a long illness.

He was born in Sanford on July 16, 1926, a son of Peter E. and Bernadette (Poirier) Cookson, and attended the former Holy Family School.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal with three stars, the American Theatre Medal, and the Philippin Liberation Medal with one bronze star.

He was a member of the VFW, the Knights of Columbus, and the Elks Lodge, all in Sanford.

He was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Doris (Roberge) Cookson of Sanford; two daughters, Linda Piet and her husband, Marcel, and their children, Aaron and Elise, and Donna Perkins, her husband, Keith, and their children, Taryn, Melanie, and Bryant, all of Sanford.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Friday in St. Ignatius Church.

Arrangements are through the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, 29 Winter St., Sanford.

Rogge' Willock, 51

YORK - Rogge' (Gorman) Willock, 51, died Feb. 7, 2003 in York after a lengthy illness. She and her husband, William O. Fick have lived in Wells for the past 12 years.

She was born in Homer, N.Y., Oct. 21, 1951 to the former JoAnne Gorman and Roger Willock formerly of Sewickley, Pa. She also was the stepdaughter of Ruth Goodwin and the late William Goodwin.

She graduated from Dean Stuart Preparatory School in Albany, N.Y. and from the State University of New York at Elmira, N.Y. She worked in the hotel and restaurant business in Florida, Utah, the central New York region including Cooperstown and Syracuse, N.H. and southern Maine, most recently at the Shore Cafe in Ogunquit. She was an avid, longtime volunteer at the parish food pantry of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Wells.

Besides her husband of 25 years, she is survived by three sisters, Nancy Keefe Rhodes of Fayetteville, N.Y., Lee Snyder of Blauvelt, N.Y. and Sara Goodwin of Hartsdale, N.Y.; two brothers, Sean Goodwin of Augusta and Francis (Brud) Goodwin of Manlius, N.Y.; two nieces, Kelly and Erin Snyder; father-in-law and sister-in-law, Capt. William Fick (USN-Ret.) and Susan Fick, both of Kennebunk; one aunt, Dorothy German of Tully, N.Y.; and numerous cousins in the Syracuse, New York area.

At her request, following cremation, her ashes will be scattered at sea. There will be no calling hours or funeral. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held later in the spring.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Food Pantry, Eldridge Road, Wells, ME 04090 or to York Hospital, York, ME 03909 in Rogge's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

John Tremblay, 82

BIDDEFORD - John L. Tremblay, 82, of Plymouth Drive, died Feb. 5, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Biddeford on March 18, 1920, a son of Adelard and Mabel (Payheur) Tremblay, was educated in schools there and graduated from the former St. Louis High School in 1939.

On June 28, 1941, he married Claire T. LeBlond in St. Andre's Church.

He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He worked 13 years at the Saco-Lowell Shops and Edwards Plant in Biddeford and Saco. He then worked at Raytheon Corp. in Andover, Mass. for two years, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Precision Screw for 20 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of the St. Louis Alumni Association, Fremont Club and St. Joseph's Church, where he sang in the choir for more than 30 years. He was involved for many years with Boy Scout Troop 309 and was active with the Boosters of the former St. Louis High School and Biddeford Athletic Association, East Biddeford Little League and the St. Louis and Westbrook skating rinks concessions. He loved reading, fishing and hunting.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years; one son, Ronald J. of Saco; three daughters, Anne C. (Mrs. Vincent) Neault, both of Biddeford, and Jackie (Mrs. Richard) Pinette of Old Orchard Beach; two brothers, Raymond of Biddeford and Richard of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one sister, Theresa Padhaisky of Cape Coral, Fla.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret Woodruff, 103

SPRINGVALE - Margaret E. Woodruff, 103, of Park View Lodge, formerly of Montpelier, Vt. and Gorham, Maine, died on Feb. 6, 2003.

She was born on Oct. 24, 1899 in Manchester, N.H., the daughter of Harrison Gordon and Maude Woodruff. She attended Montpelier schools as well as Wheelock College Normal School.

She was a longtime resident of Montpelier, Vt. and was a kindergarten teacher for 46 years.

She was a member of the Bethany Congregational Church in Montpelier, Vt., where she sang in the choir, and of the First Parish Congregational Church in Gorham, Maine. She was an avid cribbage player, and enjoyed playing other games.

She was a devoted aunt, great aunt and great-great aunt.

She is survived by two nephews, Donald Pulsifer of Woodbridge, Va., and Dr. Bruce Pulsifer of Zephyrhills, Fla.; one niece, Jean Young of Tallahassee, Fla.; 11 great nieces and nephews; and 11 great-great nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held in the summer. Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk.

Henry Bellemare, 65

WELLS - Henry A. Bellemare, 65, a resident of Sanford Road, Wells, died Jan. 11, 2003, at the Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born in Lowell, Mass., a son of Arthur and Estelle (Landry) Bellemare and graduated from St. Joseph High School the class of 1954.

He served in the United Stated Coast Guard from 1955 until 1963.

He was employed by the Portsmouth Naval Yard as foreman for 25 years and retired in 1993.

During his retirement, he was employed part time by the town of Wells for several years; he also volunteered with Meals on Wheels.

He was a member of the Trailblazers Club of Wells, Nubble Light Housekeepers Square Dance Club of York, and was also a member of the Coastal Kickers Club of Maine.

He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, skiing, traveling around the county and spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his brothers Paul and Roland Bellemare and a step-grandson Josh Bridges.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Patricia Dutch Bellemare of Wells; one son, Michael Bellemare of Dover, N.H.; one daughter, Renee Bellemare of North Berwick; four step-children, Michael Bridges of Lyman, Tammy Mathieu of Kennebunk, Scott Bridges of Wells, and Wendy Wooding of Boise, Idaho; one uncle, Freddy Bellemare of Lowell, Mass.; two grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting Hours will be held from 7 to 9 PM Tuesday January 14, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 111 Chapel Road Wells, Maine where a funeral was held Wednesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells, with the Rev. Joseph Ford officiating. Burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells in the spring.

Should friends desire, memorial donation may be made to the Duke University - Pancreatic Cancer Society, PO Box 90581, Durham, NC 22708-0581 in Mr. Bellemare's memory.

Adelaide Corey, 84

ARUNDEL - Adelaide Elizabeth "Betty" Corey, 84, of Arundel, Kennebunk and most recently the Barron Center, died peacefully Jan. 10, 2003, surrounded by her family at the Barron Center in Portland, Maine.

She was born Sept. 8, 1918 in Biddeford, a daughter of Fred Wallace and Nellie Watson. She attended Milbridge and Biddeford schools.

She was a longtime resident of Kennebunk and was employed with Howard Johnson's for more than 20 years. She was a member of the retired teachers association and was active in Four-H and the York County Extension. She was also secretary of the Maine Dairy Council. She was a member of the Second Congregational Church in Biddeford, and also belonged to Christ's Church in Kennebunk.

She enjoyed knitting, traveling with her sister, and time with her family.

She is predeceased by her husband rsister Clara Stone.

She is survived by her four children, Francis Ouellette of Haverhill, Mass., Carolyn Myers of Arundel, Kenneth Corey of Biddeford, and Beth Corey-Smith of West Gardiner; three sisters, Ruth Corey of Portland, Anna Wallace of Biddeford, and Esther Wallace of Haverhill, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

A service was held at the Bibber Memorial Chapel Tuesday with the Rev. David Wiggley officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at Greenwood cemetery in Biddeford.

Gordon Hutchins, 79

EAST MIDDLEBURY, Vt. and Cape Porpoise, Maine - Gordon Hutchins, 79, died peacefully Jan. 5, 2003 at his East Middlebury home surrounded by his family, after a long illness.

He was born in Cape Porpoise on April 11, 1923, the son of the late Dexter and Josie (Card) Hutchins. He graduated from Kennebunkport High School in 1942.

He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Air Force at the end of World War II. He then returned home to his first love, lobster fishing and managing a fleet of sardine boats of the coast of Maine. He was a 50-year member of the Arundel Lodge of Masons and a past patron of Aurora Chapter of Kennebunkport. He enjoyed bird hunting and working his Labrador retrievers in the field.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Frances (Wakefield) Hutchins; four loving daughters, Josie Davis and her husband Stephen of Weybridge, Vt., Melissa Hutchins of East Middlebury, Vt., Heidi Stokes and her husband Sydney of Ripton, Vt. and Jennifer McAllister and her husband Bradley of Epping, N.H.; six grandchildren, Stephanie Bartlett and her husband George Tetreault of Indianapolis, Ind., Rachel Bartlett Rosado and her husband Rafael of Medford, Mass., Russell Davis of Bridgport, Vt., Joshua and Shane McAllister of Epping, N.H. and Bridget Bartlett of Lincoln; four great-grandchildren; and Prudence Wills of Cape Porpoise, his twin sister.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Burleigh, Homer, Roger, Lee and a sister, Edna Hutchins King.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Memorial services will be held in the spring at a date to be announced.

Theodore Hutchins, 89

OGUNQUIT - Theodore Joseph Hutchins, 89, a resident of Grasshopper Lane, Ogunquit, died Jan 8, 2003, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He was the husband of Sylvia (Ramsdell) Hutchins.

He was born in Ogunquit, Oct. 24,1913, a son of Russell P. and Mary (Bisbee) Hutchins of Ogunquit. A lifelong resident of Ogunquit, he carried on the family Chevrolet auto dealership that was established in 1840 as a blacksmith shop. He retired in 1968 and for several years wintered in Florida.

He was one of the oldest members of the Ogunquit Baptist Church, a member of Ocean Lodge of Masons in Wells and the Ogunquit Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sylvia (Ramsdell) Hutchins; one son, Thomas and his wife Betty of Ogunquit; one daughter, Sally and her husband, Robert Alexandre of Ogunquit; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Hutchins of Ogunquit; and one sister, Margaret Allen of Bridgton.

Graveside services will be held in Riverside cemetery in Ogunquit later in the spring.

Edwin Newell, 90

LACONIA, N.H. - Edwin Horley Newell, 90, of the Congregate Living Center, Taylor Community, died Jan. 5, 2003 at the Lakes Region General Hospital. He was the widower of Dorothy Quincy (Sayward) Newell who died in 1980.

He was born May 8, 1912 in Glen Ridge, N.J., the son of John Osgood and Mabel (Horrax) Newell. His early years were spent in Colebrook, Conn. He graduated from Fork Union Military Academy in 1933 and then associated with William L. Gilbert Clock of Winsted, Conn. and Laconia, N.H. In 1952, he purchased Ayers Box Co., which he sold to Visual Paper and managed until 1987. He was president of the Laconia Community Chest and the Laconia Rotary Club in 1952 and was a lay reader at St. James Episcopal Church for more than 40 years. He was a 50-year member of Mt. Lebanon Lodge 32 AF&AM and was awarded the Maj. John Sullivan Medal both in bronze and silver. He was a 50-year member of York and Scottish Rite and Bektask Shrine, was Past Grand Pursuivant of New Hampshire Grand Lodge AF&AM; was Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Chapter, Grand Master of Council and Grand Commander of Knights Templar. He received the Order of the Purple Cross from York Rite College at Tornoto in 1994. His membership includes Mt. Lebanon Lodge 32, William Pitt Tavern Lodge, N.H. Veteran Free Masons, St. Omer-Union Chapter, Pythagorean Council, Pilgrim Commandery, Knight of the York Cross of Honor, Profile York Rite College, Granite State Red Cross of Constantine, Senic Council Knight Masons, Scottish Rite Chapter and Consistory, Order of the Silver Trowel, Order of High Priesthood, Order of the Eastern Star, and Bektash Shrine.

Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia N. Brown of Northfield and Elizabeth Newell of Laconia; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Marguerite Fearey of Annapolis, Md.; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Alexandra Newell.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service was held Sunday at St. James Episcopal Church, Laconia, N.H. Rev. Jonathan MacKenzie, rector of the church, officiated.

A committal service will be held in the spring in Kennebunk where he will join his wife, Dorothy, and daughter, Alexandra.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
