Elizabeth Cutting, 17

WELLS - Elizabeth Catherine Cutting, 17, of Bragdon Road in Wells, died unexpectedly on Feb. 9, 2003 at York Hospital.

She was born on Sept. 22, 1985, a daughter of Michael Robert and Angelita (Delgado) Cutting. She was currently a senior at Wells High School.

She was an accomplished guitarist and songwriter often performing for WMPG, a radio station in Portland. She was very involved in school belonging to the track team, drama club, and the chorus and used to be a member of the band. She also volunteered with young children at the junior high school. She also belonged to the Seacoast Outright Inc. in Portsmouth.

She is survived by her parents, of Wells; two sisters, Patricia Dustin and her husband Kenneth of Yarmouth, and Victoria Cutting of Wells; her maternal grandmother Anita Delgado of Victoria, Texas; her paternal grandparents, David and Lorraine Jette of Portsmouth, N.H.; many aunts and uncles; many cousins and great cousins; and friends.

A memorial service was held at the Wells Harbor Community Park, Wells on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Crisis Support Intervention, PO Box 1010, Saco, ME 04072.

Patrick Smith, 84

METHUEN, Mass. - Patrick L. Smith, 84, of Methuen, Mass., passed away Feb. 13, 2003 at his home.

He was born in Lowell, Mass. and attended the local schools of Lowell. He graduated from Keith Academy in Lowell.

He served in France during World War II in the United States Army. He worked as an insurance agency for the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company located in Lowell. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Lawrence, Mass. He was the past president of St. Rita's PTA. He was a former member of St. Vincent DePaul of St. Mary's in Lawrence, Mass. of the Merrimack Valley Housing Partnership, Methuen Democratic Town Committee, 1988 Eagle Tribune Citizens Panel and he worked on various local political campaigns. He enjoyed his family, the beach and gardening.

He was the husband of the late Mrs. Anne P. (Costello) Smith; surviving are one son, James B. Smith and his wife, Marjory of Kennebunk; two daughters, Mary K. Smith of Kennebunk and Patricia A. Smith of Methuen, Mass.; one brother, John R. Smith and his wife, Janice of Chelmsford, Mass.; two sisters, Mrs. Walter (Ann) Glasheen of Lowell, Mass. and Mary Currie of Chelmsford, Mass.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late James Smith, Thomas Smith, Bishop Philip Smith, Father Joseph Smith, Brendan, William and Kevin Smith.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday in St. Mary's Church in Lawrence, Mass. Burial followed at the St. Mary's cemetery in Lawrence, Mass.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bread and Roses, 58 Newbury St., Lawrence, MA 01840.

Dorothy Paquet, 84

ARUNDEL - Dorothy E. (Lunt) Paquet, 84, of Arundel died on Feb. 18, 2003 at a Biddeford nursing home.

She was born in Biddeford, and lived her entire life in Arundel, on the family farm with the exception of the last few years. She farmed and grew vegetables and flowers. People from miles around would stop and comment on her beautiful flower gardens.

She is survived by her husband John; one daughter, Phyllis Macdonald and husband James of Lyman; two grandsons and families, Scot Macdonald and his wife Kristeen of Plymouth, Mass. and Jeffrey Macdonald and his friend Peggy Sands, her daughter Stephenie of Lyman; and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Victoria Macdonald of Plymouth, Mass.

There will be a private graveside service held at the convenience of the family in the spring.

Donations can be made in her memory to the Animal Welfare Society Inc., Old Holland Road, PO Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094. The family has requested that no flowers be sent.

Allan Schwarte, 58

WELLS - Allan Richard Schwarte, 58, a resident of the Upper Landing Road Wells, died April 5, 2003 at York Hospital, York, after a courageous battle against lung cancer. He was the husband of Grace (Mercer Conrad) Schwarte.

He was born March 21, 1945 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., a son of Edwin H. and Ethel L. (Chase) Schwarte. He attended Poughkeepsie schools and graduated from Arlington High School in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He earned his B.A. in political science at Syracuse University in New York, he served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, and earned his masters in urban planning at Virginia Tech. He was employed in Arlington, Va. for 11 years as a land planner prior to moving to Wells.

A resident of Wells for the past 20 years, coming from Virginia, he was a land use planner and wrote the Land Use Law for the town of Wells. He served on the Wells Planning Board and the Site Review Board. He was a consulting land planner for the town and other businesses in the Wells area. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling and collecting antique sewing machines.

Survived by his wife Grace (Mercer Conrad) Schwarte of Wells; two step-children, Trevor Conrad of Penn Yan, N.Y., and Gwen Conrad of Juarez, Mexico; one brother, Bruce Schwarte of Ivor, Va.; one aunt, Helen Chase Manning of N.Y., N.Y.; one uncle, Jurgan Schwarte of N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Messiah Christian Church, Route 1 North, Wells, today from 4 to 6 p.m. A celebration of Allan's life will follow at 6 p.m. with Pastor Daniel Moore officiating the service. Interment will be in Ocean View cemetery later in the spring.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice in Allan's memory to continue his legacy of serving your community.

Frances Brown, 94

CONCORD, N.H. - Frances (Holmes) Brown, 94, of Concord, N.H., formerly of Auburndale, Mass. and Kennebunk Beach, died March 28, 2003 at the Havenwood Nursing Home in Concord.

She was born in Yonkers, N.Y., the daughter of the late Dr. John Haynes Holmes of the Community Church of New York, and the late Madeleine (Baker) Holmes. Dr. John Haynes Holmes and Arthur Calder were among the early founders of KBIA. She attended the University of Chicago and Radcliffe College.

A member of the Newton Highland (Mass.) Congregational Church, she worked as their secretary for many years. She had a lifelong love of the ocean and the outdoors. As a young girl, she attended camp in Bridgeton, Maine and she spent summers at the family cottage in Kennebunk Beach, beginning in 1926, until her illness in the 1990s.

She was an officer of the Kennebunk Coastal Association in its early years. Through the years, she loved the theater and antiquing, and she was a strong advocate for peace and justice. Adventuresome and youthful in outlook even into her elder years, she dearly loved her children and grandchildren and participated in activities with them at every opportunity. She was predeceased by her husband, Morris L. Brown in 1970 and a brother, Dr. Roger W. Holmes.

She is survived by one daughter, Alison L. Grinder of Paradise Valley, Ariz., and Kennebunk Beach; one son, David W. Brown of Amherst, N.H.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

R. Howard Eldridge, 78

KENNEBUNK - R. Howard Eldridge, 78, of Sea Road, Kennebunk, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born in Boston, Mass. on Dec. 6, 1924, son of Roderick and Carrie Eldridge of Harwichport, Cape Cod, Mass.

He worked at the Boston Shipyard as an electrician on LSTs during World War II. After the war, he worked at Simplex Wire & Cable of Cambridge for 25 years, which brought him to Southern Maine in 1970. After settling in Kennebunk, he continued to work for Pratt & Whitney in North Berwick until his retirement.

He impacted the lives of many with his untouchable sense of humor and mix of compassion and concern. He was a man of high morals whose never-ending generosity toward his family and friends will forever be remembered. Founder of the Walpole Ski Club, he was an avid lifelong skier, part-time golfer and enjoyed walks on the beach with his basset hound, Thunder. He was a purveyor of "fine" antiquities and his alternative methods of home repair will continue to be legendary.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen (Hanken) Eldridge of Kennebunk; one sister, Evelyn (Eldridge) Robinson and her husband Wayne of Harwichport, Cape Cod; one sister-in-law, Louise Harrington and her husband Bill of Denmark, Maine; two sons, Ron Eldridge of Kennebunkport and Hank Eldridge and his wife Tina of Arundel; two daughters, Cookie Eldridge of Kennebunk, and Heidi Dyer and her husband Gregg of Medford, Mass.; six grandchildren, Sean, Kevin, Carol, Keith, Kelsey, Annaliese; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, where a noon memorial service will be held on Saturday. Interment will take place at a later date in Harwichport, Cape Cod, Mass.

Those wishing to honor the life of Howard Eldridge are encouraged to make donations to The Waban Project, 5 Dunaway Dr., Sanford, ME 04073.

Norman Moore, 76

CAPE NEDDICK - Norman Elliot Moore, 76, of Old Mountain Road, Cape Neddick, and N. Bradford, Maine, formerly of Holliston and Cochituate, Mass., died Feb. 16, 2003 at York Hospital.

He was a loving husband, a devoted father and brother, and a valued friend who will be greatly missed.

He was born in Wayland, Mass. on April 1, 1926, a son of Clifford Sewall and Albyna (Sullivan) Moore, and was educated in Cochituate, Mass. schools. He attended the Vesper George School of Art in Boston, Mass. and was an accomplished watercolorist, photographer and videographer of nature. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was a semi-professional singer and the featured vocalist with a 20-piece big band from 1949 to 1959, and was also the vocalist with several smaller groups during the same period. Additionally, he worked as a sheet-metal mechanic, Realtor, and a heating and ventilation estimator, retiring in 1991. He was also proud of his many contributions to his daughter's dairy goat farm in Cape Neddick.

He began his military service on Sept. 5, 1944 in the U.S. Army, joining the famed 29th Infantry Division and continued with this division until V-E day. He was awarded the Presidential Citation, Good Conduct medal, American Theatre and European Theatre campaign ribbons with three battle stars, Victory ribbon with star, Occupational Ribbon of Germany and Combat Infantryman's Badge.

He re-enlisted on Nov. 8,1945, and worked as an MP in Germany and France. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 24, 1948 with the rank of sergeant.

He was predeceased by his wife of 31 years, Dorothy (Michelson) Moore, who died on Dec. 30, 1989, and who he honored and loved infinitely.

Survivors include one daughter, Cheryle Moore-Smith and her husband, Wyl Smith of Cape Neddick; two sons, Danny Robinson of Maynard, Mass. and his wife Karen, of Ayer, Mass., and Leland Robinson and his wife Candace, of Milford, Mass.; one sister, Rose Yeager of York; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday May 3 in Cape Neddick.

Linwood Adjutant, 90

YORK - Linwood G. Adjutant, 90, of 2 Victoria Court, widower of Thelma (Perkins) Adjutant, formerly of School Street, Ogunquit, died Dec. 27, 2002 in York.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday in Ocean View Cemetery, Route 1, Wells. The Rev. Sharon Miesel will officiate.

Marie Normand, 90

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Marie J. Normand, 90, formerly of Sanford and Kennebunk, died April 3, 2003 at the Washington House in Alexandria, Va. after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Louis L. Normand who died in 1987.

She was born in St. Rose du Digelis, Quebec, Canada March 20, 1913, a daughter of Francis Xavier and Pauline (Lavoie) Michaud. She attended schools in Quebec and came to the United States as a young girl. She and her late husband lived in Sanford, prior to moving to the Kennebunks. She was employed for several years with the former Kesslen Shoe Company and in later years with Morning Star Corporation, both in Kennebunk. She was a communicant of St. Martha in Kennebunk. She moved to Alexandria, Va. several years ago to be near her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, and one sister Rose Potvin.

She is survived by two sons, Louis L. Normand Jr. of Florham Park, N.J. and Paul E. Normand of Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Leanne Devost of Edmunston, New Brunswick; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was said Monday at St. Martha Church, Kennebunk with Rev. Laurent LaPlante officiating. Interment was in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.

Norman Graves, 85

WILLIAMSBURG, Mass. - Norman F. Graves of 21 Main St., Williamsburg, Mass., and a former Ogunquit resident, died March 31, 2003 in Cooley-Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, Mass.

Born May 16, 1917 in Williamsburg, he was the son of the late Ralph and Isabel (MacFarland) Graves.

He attended Williamsburg schools and was a 1935 graduate of Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, Vt. In 1939, he graduated from Norwich University in Northfield, Vt.

He was the owner from 1948 to 1993 of Graves Equipment Inc. in Northhampton and F.N. Graves Automotive Company in Williamsburg.

He was a member and former deacon of the Williamsburg Congregational Church.

He was a trustee of Cooley Dickinson Hospital and a director of the former Northhampton National Bank. He was also a member of the Rotary clubs in Ogunquit and Williamsburg. His first wife, Betty (Wilcox) Graves died earlier.

He leaves his wife, Nicole (Beaudoin) Graves; two sons, Frederick Graves of Hatfield and William of South Deerfield; one daughter, Suzanne of Ogunquit; one brother, Richard of Williamsburg; one sister, Geneva Warner of Florida; three grandchildren; and a granddaughter.

A memorial service was held in Williamsburg on April 3.

Kenneth Barrett, 42

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Kenneth L. Barrett, 42, beloved son of John and Virginia Barrett of Kennebunk was killed in a motorcycle accident near his home in San Diego, Calif. on April 6, 2003.

He was a graduate of Rockland High School in Rockland, Mass. and later served in the U.S. Navy. He was the owner of the Seabreeze Dental Laboratory in San Diego and loved to fish, camp in his vintage motor home and spend happy spare time working on his motorcycles and antique car.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dianna, one son, Matthew and daughter Heather, all of San Diego; three brothers, John C. of New Hampshire, Kevin of York, and Daniel of Goffstown, N.H., three sisters, Rebecca Tengwall of Portland, Ore., Lydie Kennedy of Plymouth, Mass., and Melissa Hall of Kennebunk; and; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Friday April 11 at 1 p.m. at the Featheringill Mortuary in San Diego. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Riverside, Calif.

Eugene Raymond, 75

BIDDEFORD - Eugene P. Raymond, 75, of West Street, formerly of Rutland, Vt., died Jan. 17, 2003 at his home.

He was born March 23, 1927, in Eagle Lake, a son of Wilfred and Mabel (Shorette) Raymond, and was educated in Brunswick schools.

He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On Sept. 1, 1947, he married Rita Rodrigue at St. Mary's Church.

He worked for 32 years for First National Stores, first in the Saco store and then in Rutland in 1962. In his retirement, he worked for Shop'n Save in Biddeford.

A brother, Richard, and a sister, Kathleen Messier, died previously.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years; two sons, Michael of Burlington, Vt. and Gregory of Greer, S.C.; two brothers, Loumous of Brunswick and Donald of Topsham; four sisters, Doris Belanger of Topsham, Dorothy Blanchette of Ellsworth and Mary Holbrook and Ann Buckley, both of Brunswick; and four grandchildren.
