Scott Vermette, 18

SANFORD - Scott J. Vermette, 18, of Sanford, died Wednesday in Sanford.

He was born in Sanford on Dec. 24, 1984, a son of Glen Chick and Patricia McFarland.

He attended Sanford schools. He played football and baseball with the Sanford-Springvale Youth Athletic Association in Springvale, and hockey with the Sanford-Springvale Youth Hockey Association. He also participated in karate and pee-wee wrestling.

He especially enjoyed outdoor activities with his family including water skiing, tubing, camping and moose and deer watching, and fishing.

He is survived by his parents, Roland and Lois Vermette of Sanford; four brothers, Sean McFarland of Massachusetts, Glen McFarland, Ryan Vermette and Jason Vermette, all of Sanford; three sisters, Sandie Bolling Vermette, Sarah McDonough Vermette and Vanessa McFarland, all of Sanford; his maternal grandmother, Bertha Fredette of Sanford; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews.

Lorraine Kavanagh, 75

WELLS - Lorraine E. Kavanagh, 75, a resident of Webhannet Harbor, Wells, formerly of Watertown, Mass., widow of Edward P. Kavanagh, died Jan. 15, 2003 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born in Newton, Mass. on April 18, 1927, a daughter of Thomas J. and Viola (Brooks) Burns. She attended Watertown schools and graduated from Watertown High School. During World War II she was employed at the Hood Rubber Company in Watertown, Mass.

She and her late husband were the proprietors of Kavanagh Real Estate in Watertown, Mass. They enjoyed their membership at the Oakley Country Club and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. They moved to Maine in 1980 and purchased the Carriage House Motel in Wells, which operated until 1987. Since that time, she was active in the real estate business as a broker for the Downing Agency and more recently with Garnsey Brothers Real Estate. She was an active member of St. Mary's Church and also involved with Hospice of York. She enjoyed time at the beach with her extended family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward P. Kavanagh in 1984, a brother Thomas Burns and a sister Louise Burns.

She is survived by four children, Edward P. Kavanagh and his wife Nancy of Framingham, Mass., James T. Kavanagh and his wife Janice of Wells, Diane M. Mullaney and her husband Tom of Kennebunk, and Kathleen M. DiSciullo and her husband Domenic of Wells; one sister, Helen Woods of Billerica, Mass. and one brother, Gerald Burns of Jacksonville, Fla. She also shared her life and love with her 10 grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

A funeral Mass was Saturday at St. Mary's Church, Eldridge Road, Wells, with Rev. Joseph Ford officiating the Mass. Interment will be in Ocean View cemetery later in the spring.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Hospice of York, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Doris Shoesmith, 92

KENNEBUNK - Doris C. Shoesmith, 92, a homemaker and resident of Huntington Commons, died on Jan. 19, 2003.

She was born June 13, 1910 in Lawrence, Mass. to the late Frank and Jennie (Hayes) Waterworth. She graduated from Methuen (Mass.) High School in 1928 and was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Lawrence. She resided in Sanford from 1934 to 1955 and in Clarksville, Va. from 1955 to 1994 when she and Thomas W. Shoesmith, her husband of 73 years, moved to Kennebunk. She also had a residence at Wells Beach, where she summered for more than 50 years.

She was a former member of the Riding Club in Sanford and volunteered as a Gray Lady at Goodall Hospital. In addition to playing golf and bridge, she enjoyed handcrafts such as knitting, sewing, rug-making and crocheting. She especially excelled in needlepointing pictures, which are displayed as framed wall hangings.

She is the mother of the late Margary S. Hansen of Kennebunkport, Maine and Stuart, Fla. She is survived by her husband Thomas; one daughter, Constance S. Deck of Metairie, La.; four grandchildren, Harold R. Hansen Jr. of Tewksbury, Mass., Thomas S. Hansen of Houston, Texas, Jon P. Hansen of Kennebunk and Elizabeth H. Tracy of Woodbury, Minn.; and seven great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service was held at Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk. The family requests that flowers be omitted. A memorial contribution may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 35 Jackson St., Lawrence, MA 01840.

George Agnew Jr., 93

VERO BEACH, Fla. - George B. Agnew Jr., 93, died on Jan. 13, 2003 in Vero Beach, Fla.

He was born on Sept. 9, 1909 in Mount Kisco, N.Y. to Emily Dutilh and George Bliss Agnew, the former state senator from New York City.

He worked at the Pentagon during World War II and then at the Putnam Trust Company in Greenwich, Conn.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis B. Agnew; one sister, Madelaine Dykema; one brother, David Agnew; three children, Peter Agnew, Tom Agnew and Emily Agnew; and 10 grandchildren.

He was a longtime resident of Greenwich, Conn., and maintained a home in Kennebunkport.

He graduated from the Haverford School and Princeton University. He belonged to the Princeton Quadrangle Club, the Princeton Club of New York, the John's Island Club, Vero Beach, Fla., the Kennebunk River Club and the Arundel Yacht Club, both in Kennebunkport.

Funeral arrangements are private. A memorial service will be held in Kennebunkport in early August to commemorate George Agnew's life.

Esther Antonacos

BIDDEFORD - Esther (Spirounias) Antonacos of Biddeford died Jan. 19, 2003.

She was born in Biddeford on Aug. 1, 1914, a daughter of John and Pota (Patrikakos) Spirounias, one of 12 children. She grew up and went to public school in Biddeford and Saco.

At the age of 16, she married Arthur Antonacos and together they raised their children, Patricia and Charles. Although she was above all a devoted mother and grandmother, she was admired by many for her accomplished needlework and skills as a seamstress. Talented and industrious, she worked many jobs over the years. These included operating her own beauty shop, managing the Friendly Style Shop, and in the earlier years, working for the Saco-Lowell, Pepperell Mills, Fairchild, and local shoe shops.

She enjoyed travel and had the opportunity to go once to London and several times to Greece, the homeland of her parents. She was a devout and faithful member of the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Congregation and rarely missed a church service.

She will be remembered as a loving mother, sister, grandmother and aunt. She will remain loved and deeply missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are her one son, Charles Antonacos and one sister, Ethel Spirounias, both of Biddeford; four granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased in death by her husband, Arthur Antonacos in 1990 and a daughter, Patricia in 1996.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Saco.

Donations to St. Demetrios Church or to St. Demetrios cemetery can be made in lieu of flowers.

Frances Ehrig, 90

OGUNQUIT - Frances Belle Ehrig, 90, formerly of Ogunquit, died at the Riverside Rest Home on Jan. 12, 2003 after a brief illness.

She was born on April 16, 1912, in Somersworth, N.H., the daughter of Charles and Grace (Adams) Sanborn, and attended Somersworth schools. She graduated in 1961 from the New Hampshire Technical Institute with her LPN degree. She went on to serve as a nurse at the Wentworth Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H., for more than 20 years. She was a member of the American Pen Women, the Ogunquit Women's Club, and St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Cape Neddick.

She began taking art courses at the University of New Hampshire. It was at this time that she discovered her passion for painting and illustrating. She studied under William C. Ehrig, the renowned seascape painter, whom she would later marry. Together they ran the William C. Ehrig gallery from their home on Shore Road in Ogunquit. For many years she spent winters in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where she worked as a private nurse. She continued to paint and teach from her Ogunquit studio well into her 80s. Her paintings reflect her love of the sea, the rugged coastline of Maine, and the subtle variations of light through the passing seasons.

She was predeceased by her husband, who died in 1973.

She is survived by two daughters, Meredith (Ingalls) Williams of York, wife of James Hasty Williams, and Barbara (Ingalls) Landrigan of Concord, N.H., wife of Leo J. Landrigan; seven grandchildren, Laurel Finucan of York, James Perkins Williams of York, David Ehrig Williams of Denver, Colo., Rebecca Maxcy of Chicago, Ill., Robert Landrigan of Squantum, Mass., and Michael and James Landrigan, both of Concord, N.H.; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held in the summer at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Cape Neddick.

Arrangements are by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Richard Flaherty, 62

SPRINGVALE - Richard Flaherty, 62, of Springvale, died unexpectedly Jan. 17, 2003 at home.

He was born in Medford, Mass., on Oct. 30, 1940, a son of Patrick Joseph and Agnes (Cummings) Flaherty. He attended Medford schools and was a graduate of Medford High School.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1959 to 1963.

He was a communicant of Notre Dame Church, where he was a lector. He volunteered at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford and delivered for Meals-on-Wheels for the past six years.

His wife, Carol Ann (Jamieson) Flaherty, died in 1994.

Survivors include his three daughters, Kim Gagnon of Tewskbury, Mass., Bridget Baldwin of Burlington, Vt., and Kelly Nolette of Sanford; one brother, John Flaherty of Sun Valley, Idaho; one sister, Patricia Smith of Windham, N.H.; one granddaughter; and his special friend, Suanne Nielsen of Brunswick.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday in Notre Dame Church in Springvale.

Arrangements are through the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, Sanford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Meals-on-Wheels, c/o PO Box 764, Sanford, ME 04073.

Edward LeProhon, 73

BIDDEFORD - Former resident Edward A. LeProhon, 73, died Jan. 19, 2003 at the V.A. Hospital in Togus.

He was born in Lewiston on April 20, 1929, a son of Ernest P. and Cora J. (Albert) LeProhon, and was educated in Lewiston, Sanford and Biddeford schools.

He served with the Army during the Korean conflict.

Following his military service, he worked as a machinist for the Saco Tanning Corp. and Edward's Plant in Saco, retiring in 1977 due to ill health.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and doing puzzles of all kinds.

Surviving are five brothers, Francis of East Hartford, Conn., Louis of Biddeford, Albert of Rochester, N.H., Joseph of Stewart, Fla. and John of Kennebunk; nine sisters, Anna Sevigny of Old Orchard Beach, Theresa Gagnon, Priscilla Ledoux and Ernestine Inkel, all of Biddeford, Jeannette Hoitt of Bryan, Ohio, Rosemary Janson of Saco, Angela Dill of Trona, Calif., Deanna DeMerritt of Rochester, N.H. and Donna Noble of Pensacola, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Guy Litalien, 46

BIDDEFORD - Guy C. Litalien, 46, of Sapphire Drive, died Jan. 17, 2003 at New England Medical Center in Boston after a seven-year battle with cancer.

He was born July 24, 1956 in Biddeford, a son of Joachim and Geraldine (Dubreuil) Litalien, was educated in schools there and graduated from Biddeford High School in 1974 and the University of Southern Maine with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering.

On July 27, 1974, he married Roxanne Prefontaine in St. Ignatius Church in Sanford.

He worked more than 22 years with Pratt & Whitney in North Berwick.

He was a member of the Little Ossipee Lake Association and a charter member of the St. Joseph's Church Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph's Church. He volunteered for the House of St. Joseph and United Way and enjoyed outdoor activities and woodworking.

Surviving are his wife of 28 years; one son, Jason G., stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Italy; one daughter, Victoria E. of West Kennebunk; his parents of Biddeford; one brother, Denis J. of Biddeford; three sisters, Gisele of Conway, Mass., Rita Bradbury of Buxton and Roxanne MacDonald of Standish; and one grandson.

Edward Pendleton, 58

SACO - Edward A. "Skip" Pendleton Sr., 58, of Wendy Way, died of a heart attack Jan. 16, 2003 in Littleton, Mass.

He was born April 11, 1944 in Portland, a son of Edward F. and Dorothy (Allain Cote) Pendleton, and was educated in Portland schools.

He served four years with the U.S. Navy (1061-1965) during the Vietnam War.

On June 25, 1966, he married Helen Schark in Portland.

He was a long distance driver for the St. Johnsbury Trucking Company for 25 years. He also drove his own truck, DBA Tiger Transport.

He was a member of the Elks, Eagles, V.F.W., Teamsters and the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association.

Family members say he was a kind and caring person, always thinking of others first. He loved trucking, but his greatest dream was to own his own boat.

Surviving are his wife; three sons, Scott Edward and Edward A. Jr., both of Saco, and David Allen of Waterboro; two brothers, James Cote of Bangor and Roland Hughes of South Portland; several sisters; and eight grandchildren.

Richard Stevens, 72

KENNEBUNK - Richard Winborn Stevens, 72, died peacefully Feb. 21, 2003 at his residence on Day Street, Kennebunk in the same room that he was born in surrounded by his wife and children.

He was born in Kennebunk Sept. 14, 1930, a son of Winborn Adelbert and Alice Mae (Dixon) Stevens. He attended Kennebunk schools. He was a well-known brick and stone mason in the Kennebunks owning and operating his own business. He was most proud of the stone wall that he built single-handedly at Saint Ann's Church in Kennebunkport.

He enjoyed his family and grandchildren and traveling with his family to Florida and other locations. He was an avid bowler and won the Kennebunk Candlepin Championship as well as the Maine State Championship in Candlepin bowling. He was also an avid horse racing and Maine harness racing fan. He also enjoyed quite moments in bird watching, seeing the deer and moose travel through his property.

His brother Donald Stevens and sister Helen J. Smith predeceased him.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jo-Deen (Coulthard) Stevens; one son, Dana W. Stevens and his wife Denise of Arundel; two daughters, Lisa A. Stone and her husband Todd of Alfred, Heather J. Gelston and husband Josh of Windham; three sisters, Shirley Ducharme of Cape Neddick, Dawn Jennings and Christine Stevens both of Kennebunk; two grandchildren, Emma Louise Stevens and Cody Benjamin Gelston; several nieces and nephews also survive.

A funeral was held at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk on Monday with the Rev. Stephen Hastings officiating. Interment will be held later in the spring in Pine Grove Cemetery, West Kennebunk.

Katherine Thompson, 82

KENNEBUNK - Katherine (DeLong) Thompson, 82, of Bradford Court, died on Feb. 19, 2003 at her residence.

She was born in Evanston, Ill., a daughter of Willard and Lena DeLong. She moved to West Hartford, Conn. with her family when she was in eighth grade. She attended Bates College where she met and married Richard Thompson of Auburn.

Following his tour in the Navy, they returned to West Hartford. He predeceased her in 1966.

She was involved in town politics and zoning issues, and held a real estate license until she was 79, working for DeWolfe Agency in West Hartford. In 2001 she moved to Kennebunk to be near family. She was always interested in art and architecture, traveled extensively and loved driving around Maine to look at all the houses, and along the coast to see Maine's many colors.

She is survived by two daughters, Wendy Noyes and her husband Jim of Biddeford and Beth Thompson of Redding, Calif.; two sons, Buzz Thompson and his wife Shirley of San Francisco, and Douglas Thompson of Hawaii; three grandchildren, Christy Britton and Tim Britton of Los Angeles, and Sophia Thompson of San Francisco; and two sisters, Mary Frances Ramsdell of Highland Lakes, N.J., and Carolyn Desmond of Claryville, N.Y.

A memorial service was held Tuesday at the Church on the Cape, Cape Porpoise.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Thompson Fund, c/o Bates College, Lewiston, ME 04240.
